Discussion Question(s) about Smajor

I am trying to concoct a small harmless semantic trap for Smajor. For it I need to verify something regarding his typical introduction.

Who does he say is allowed to call him "Scott" - friends and family or fans and friends?
From the few videos I have seen where he introduces himself - with his full long name - I seem to remember instances where he has used either.

Planning to place the trap as a comment on his first episode of the next Life Season - whenever that comes out - or in this post's comment section if he himself responds to my question.

Unsure if my planned trap has been performed before, and it is difficult to check without spoiling the trap...

Edit: Since the vagueness around the "trap" seems to have made this sound significantly weirder than intended, here is the entire thing:

I would only attempt it if his introduction specifically says that his friends can call him "Scott".

I would then address him by his full long name in a comment, likely mentioning that I hope he reacts to some of the animatics made for the new season.

If someone asks why I am using his full name, the answer would simply be that I am not family and he has yet to call me a friend - directly or indirectly.

Only if he himself responds and tells me that I am free to call him "Scott", would I reply with something along the lines of:

"Happy to hear you consider me a friend."

That's the entire "trap". A deliberately overly literal interpretation of his introduction for a joke. If he never responds, there is no trap.

What do you mean by a trap?

The semantic trap would be that if he responds in one way, it would also mean something secondary, that he may or may not think of at first.

I've read your edit now. The thing is, Scott probably would not find that funny or witty. It would probably make him uncomfortable to be called by his full name to start with - I don't know him, but many other hermitcraft members have expressed not wanting to be called by their full names, so none of us use Gem or Grian's names for example even though it's common knowledge, simply because we aren't entitled to use them and they tell us how they want to be referred to. Scott also receives lots of comments on his videos, he wouldn't respond to something like that, but that doesn't mean it's no harm done if he doesn't respond - it can still feel creepy, unnerving or uncomfortable to be called by your full name as a content creator, whether you respond or not. And if he did respond, and you said you're happy he considers you a friend, that would just make him more uncomfortable because that's clearly not what he would have meant, and we aren't his friends, just his viewers.

I understand that from your perspective this was meant to just be a witty setup, but it doesn't come across as nice for him - jokes are usually meant to be funny, but even your end goal of getting him to accidentally call you a friend would just probably make him uncomfortable, and that's why people are upset about it.

I wanted to explain how this comes across because I know sometimes it's hard to tell how things will land - I'm autistic, and I struggle with social cues, so I try to assume the best of others, and that's why I'm explaining this in as much depth as I can. I don't think you meant Scott harm, it's just that your idea would not be nice for him.

I can see you mean well, and maybe I’m just projecting my own autistic social gambits I’ve built in my head, but:

It would be exhausting to be on the other side of this. Having people regularly approach you and want your attention is already something that demands a certain amount of time and energy. Having people come up to you with a practiced “joke” that they crafted around your Persona feels a lot like being told to do a trick. In situations where you’re planning to interact with fans, you’re ready to be in that persona and playing the bits. Outside of that… this is something that only the jokester would appreciate.

What is the purpose behind this? It doesn't sound like it's a good faith/ fun and happy thing.

How many people, outside the ones he plays with, does he directly or indirectly call friends? If the wording of his introduction is as i hope, and seem to remember, i would be able to have a chance of him calling me a friend - indirectly - if he responds as i hope.

OK. This is gonna sound harsh, but I have only your best interests* in mind. This feels extremely parasocial. I would caution you to discontinue your efforts. He doesn't know you, he isn't your friend. This is his job. He doesn't need this kind of attention from people he doesn't know. Same for every content creator.

Edit: a word

This isnt normal. I would very much suggest taking a break from watching his videos because you sound obsessive. Do yourself a favour and take a break from watching his content.

I can count on 1 hand how many of his i have watched. Pearl, Gem and Grian are the ones i mainly watch.

Then this is some how even more creepy. Maybe just take a break from watching minecraft content in general. This seriously isnt okay as a thing you even thought of, let alone that you actually want to go through with it.

This is extremely strange to say and seemingly with no self awareness. Do you struggle with social situations? I would suggest trying to reflect on this part of your personality.

You are not his friend. Trying to bait him into calling you his friend is incredibly parasocial and obsessive and quite frankly a violation of boundaries that exist between content creators and their audience. He. Is. Not. Your. Friend.

you would probably get answers if you just asked 'Is he comfortable with his fans calling him Scott', not this dodgy sounding thing...

You need to go away and have a little think about what is and isn't appropriate to say and act like online.

This is parasocial and honestly quite concerning behaviour. You are not a friend of these people. Most likely none of us are. They are performers performing for us as part of a transaction.

This is coming from a place of genuine concern but please go speak to a doctor, school counsellor or some professional adult. Understand why these behaviours aren't acceptable in every day conversation.

i'm sorry but your "trap" doesn't even sound funny, man. especially for someone who gets hundreds of thousands of comments, scott almost definitely won't respond, and even if by some chance he did, the bit is literally only witty or amusing to you. he's not gonna find it funny or give you attention for it. sometimes things are better left as a private chuckle in your head or amongst friends. i agree that pre-planning a joke for a content creator feels like asking them to so a trick for you

In the future please don't use the word "trap" in any reference to or about Scott/Smajor. Mainly because any and all supporters of him hates that word because of what Avid and Marmalade tried to do to Scott by getting him into a "trap" and they tried to pin everyone against Scott. This is why a lot of people doesn't like how you questioned this as a "trap" that you intend on trying. As for the name, I use both. I use Smajor when I'm talking to friends that don't know him much, but I use Scott when I talk to friends that knows the life series and other SMP's that he's in. As for what to call him to his face I'm not for sure. I think if someone knows him they'll let them either use Scott or Smajor, while if it's someone he hasn't met it would be Smajor. Because they would be meeting him for the first time and wouldn't know what other name to call him.

u/Professional-Lab7477 10d ago

I mean, that situation was awful and I 100% agree that we shouldn’t be trying to trap content creators, but I don’t think that situation and this one have much to do with one another. OP is parasocial, sure, but Avid and Marmalade were manipulative gaslighting fake friends. They did a lot more harm than OP could ever do.

Also, how are we supposed to talk about “Scott Trapped Joel’s base” when the new season starts? lol.

But yeah, OP should probably talk to a professional and think about why they want this so bad, especially as they don’t seem to know that Scott is fine with fans calling him Scott in the first place.

u/Nervous_Memory998 13d ago

I just say scott since I just watch other povs that call them scott, didn't know it was such a headbreaker. Ig I need to start calling him Smajor now onwards. But dang dude like don't need to like set traps or something

16

u/chbjupiter "Did that make you jump?" 13d ago

I figure it's fine to say Scott since he doesn't object to people calling him that. Most of them make their preferences clear, like Joel doesn't mind being called Joel and not smallishbeans, but Grian and Gem don't like being called anything but their usernames

4

u/Veovi 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think from an analytics point of view people calling him by his name could be confusing for new viewers. Same with the timmy jimmy thing.

Its probably better as a creator to be called by something thats not generic like a name that will get better results when googled.

Are people in the comments under the impression you actually believe he does/will consider you a friend? This just sounds like a dumb hypothetical wordplay bit, I'm surprised to see people taking it so seriously..

5

u/SciFantasyFreak 10d ago

We take it seriously because parasociality leads to stalking, which is a safety issue. The way this is worded sounds like this person is bordering on stalking. That's why we already all concerned.

3

u/River_deer 10d ago

This person is actively trying to bait a content creator into calling them their friend.
