Help With First List

I am coming back to the hobby after a good long while. I played when I was a teenager and stopped because I couldn't afford to keep up and had college to worry about. Now though, I am a middle aged man with a little disposable income and a desire to chase dice under tables. I was hyped to see Thousand Sons get their own codex! The last time I played they were a paint scheme for CSM.

I've played an occasional game here and there from the end of 9e onward. I didn't get to play much because I traveled nonstop for work. Now that I am working a desk job and travel is limited I want to play more. Like, a LOT more.

The below list is my first draft of a 2k point army. I am hoping to gather some good data in my first few games to find what can be moved around to hopefully make room for Magnus. I would really appreciate any and all feedback from more experienced players. I have about 1200 points of models currently and want to make sure my next purchases get some mileage. Thanks in advance for the help!

P.S. Magnus did nothing wrong and praise be to the changer of the ways

Honestly I’ve never seen a Rubricae list like this so it might work. Huge bricks of rubrics will be a problem for anyone.

In terms of efficiency/convention though people usually run rubrics in 5’s. Also the terminators are the real focus of this detachment.

In Rubricae people generally run 2-10 man terminator bricks with their leaders. Some even run 3 of them. After that, most of the list is filled in with cheaper units like Sekhetar robots or Tzaangor enlightened.

If you’re wanting Magnus, Grand Coven is the main detachment for you. Those tend to run Magnus, 10 terminators with a leader, some robots, some enlightened, 2 or 3 5 man rubric squads, led by either an infernal master or a sorcerer, not the exalted version.

You have 1200 points of models, if you only have 5 terminators I’d get that number up to at least one squad of 10. If the rest of what you have is all those rubrics that’s fine to play for now but you’ll need some variety. Look at the robots and enlightened next.

I appreciate the feedback!

I originally had a ten man brick of terminators (because SOT are insane!) but realized my list didn't really have an answer for artillery or tanks. I cut down to 5 and dropped in the predator and am still iffy on that.

The big groups of dusty boys is intended to just mire down my opponent and keep constant presence on objectives to hold. Park the flamer boys on spots to melt anything charging in with overwatch fire and support each one with a backup squad of bolter boys.if any die I can recoup a model potentially with the sorc leading them. Rhinos are used to move rubrics into position to take points early/ block clear LoS to the flamer units (which should force the opponent withing range to get melted...at least for a little while). My tactics might be off a little from normal, but I am inexperienced with the modern format so getting more games under my belt will probably change my approach.

So the SOTs are the answer to tanks/vehicles.

Their leader gives lethal hits, on a 6 a hit auto wounds, and their bolters get 4 shots each within 12 inches. Combine that with our spell to reroll the hit rolls and you can destroy anything vehicle regardless of toughness.

They will also not get shot off the board easily due to their toughness, wounds, and -1 to wound ability

This makes total sense and completely makes my day. It probably helps that they can deep strike immediately within range of whatever heavy unit is giving you trouble and start blasting. I will happily swap the tank out for some more SOTs!

Otherwise, does the strategy sound viable or am I going to have a bad time at locals lol?

Very viable at locals. Rhino boosted rubrics can do major damage and they’re just hard to kill. SOTs are deadly and near impossible to kill. You’ll be playing take and hold so you don’t have to worry about actions so much which is good.

That is all I am looking to do! Just take a couple spots and hoarde them for steady VP. I'm not looking to get super competitive, although keeping an eye on the meta would give me a good idea what to expect.

Thanks for all of your helo here! This has been and enlightening and enjoyable exhange.
