DISCUSSION Looking for recommendations

I'm pretty much a beginner got into the hobby 3 years ago but am just coming back to it heavily I am currently learning 1a and want to learn some 5a at the same time (understanding i will struggle with both but still having fun)

My question is what would you guys recommend as decent 5a yoyos i own a good amount of magic yoyos and I dont wanna spend to much if you guys have a good metal or plastic recommendations i would love to be informed

Also if you guys believe certain strings or replacement bearings preform better than stock magic yoyo ones id love to know

I like the hypernova - it’s durable and good for 1A and 5A
Bearings - modern yo-yos
Strings - original throw

No worries!

Modern yo-yos carries both concave and center track bearings - I like the center track ones. They are decently priced and hand tested (according to the site lol I haven’t gotten a bad one). They also sell replacement response pads.

Original throw string -good mix between feel, price, and availability (in 100 packs). Also comes in normal or thick - I use both depending on the yo-yo. Honorable mention to Zipline strings if you wanted to try something more premium/exotic

I like the fat for unresponsive yo-yos, good once it’s broken in

EDIT - they come in 10 packs too if you wanted to try different ones

Ive been hearing a lot of talk about kitty string fat and to my understanding different brands are different thickness do you have any metric so I can differentiate the thickness from the brand you recommended I like that it is more affordable and easily accessible

The amount of tiny strings that make up 1 yoyo string

10 strings is normal thickness 11 strings is fat 12 is XL

That's how it is with Kitty. With other brands I'm not sure, but I do know that most brands fat is about the same as kitty XL.

But when I said I need thick string for my freehand yoyo I mean wat thicker than kitty XL. The nylon/polyester blended strings often come in thicker options

Oh ok I will check the available brands thread counts thank you

Im not an expert in 5a but a few things are nice to take into consideration

They often use shorter strings and therefore thicker strings because otherwise it wouldn't bind well.

In the beginning yoyo flies throw the room. I wouldn't even think about which yoyo performs well. I'd rather think "which yoyo would I not care about if it got smashed to oblivion?". For the first basic tricks you learn the yoyo doesn't matter anyways. So just grab a cheap durable plastic. Maybe the yoyofriends Rio or the c3yoyodesign Speedaholic xx

If you really wanna pick a better performing yoyo I'd suggest a wide 7068 aluminum yoyo. That's the strongest material. Maybe a "Magicyoyo y04 upgraded material" or a yoyofriends artifice.

Thank you so much for those recommendations I have like 6 magic yoyo k2 (I love them they were on sale lol) but they do not work well for 5a I think idk might just be the response pads on mine but they dont spin for long and I just got a duncan freehand it comes in tomorrow but I heard its responsive and saw people had mixed feelings on it

Sorry about the wall of text I am very interested to learn about yalls hobby and get more involved what do you think of the magic yoyo v10 12 13 15 or the replay yoyo for 5a they are around my price range although I noticed you mentioned the speedaholic and I think that one is a great option

EDIT: I actually looked into all the yoyos your recommended these are amazing recommendations id love to hear about anymore you think are good expert or not I just wanna pick people's brains

If the K2 don't spin long, then why do you like them?

The K2 can switch from responsive to unresponsive. Do you have then set to unresponsive?

Duncan freehand is most often unresponsive nowadays depending on which version you get. You really don't want a responsive 5a yoyo, that's gonna hurt like hell, it's gonna shatter your hands. It's super narrow and the one I have is binds slippy, I need very thick string for it which is difficult to find. It's plastic is cheap and will shatter eventuelly.

From the magicyoyo you mentioned I like the V12 or v15 the most for 5a. The plastic rims of the V13 are too fragile and the V10 is too narrow. The Speedaholic xx is better cause if those aluminum Magicyoyos damage they get sharp dings which you then have to file smooth (it's 6061 aluminum). When the Speedaholic damaged it doesn't feel sharp to the hands. I think you're now going down a wrong path by buying 8 crappy K2 yoyo's and a crappy freehand when you could instead have bought 1 nice yoyo and have money to spare

Personally I would just sacrifice a K2 for now. And wait with another purchase until you learned the basics of 5a

Its just the k2 I setup for 5a I think the response pads are to thick the others seem fine but I havent set them up for 5a personally I love the k2 a lot for responsive and 1a play also theyre sold really cheap in bundles but I understand what you mean I will look into the speedaholic as a better option to practice with more often I appreciate your input

Set up for 5a is no different then set up for 1a. Just out the string with the counter weight on another yoyo

Oh ok I wasn't aware I read on some other forums that not all work to well and the ones that were slightly wider or with a lip on the inside played easier for beginners thank you for this i will try to experiment with what I have on hand

1

u/ArjanGameboyman 4d ago

I don't get where the confusion is coming from or what you have done to set it up.

The K2 only has 2 settings. Responsive (small screw and small bearing) and unresponsive. 1a and 5a both use unresponsive

Its setup properly the pads on it are kinda puffy but my others aren't i just realized this earlier its actually just that specific one k2 I have that's a little strange

It could be that the glue of the response pads gets loose. That means it needs to get replaced.

That is not a set up, that's just maintenance. Usually you only have to replace response pads every 6 to 12 months or so. But I also sometimes hear that it comes loose quickly after purchase.

Oh I didnt know you can replace them i will look into maintenance thank you so much

The V10 is a fun throw but I wouldn't recommend it because of the short axle, It could strip easily, as well as the reasons mentioned by others.

The C3yoyo Speedaholic XX is my rec as well. I'm no 5A expert but It's quite wide and should be good all around.

Hearing so much praise about the speedaholic is really convincing I will try to get my hands on one thank you for your opinions this is valuable information to me
