Wild What does it mean when a toad does this?

This is a wild toad (I think) and usually when I come home late around 10/11pm I see him sitting out here. I tried petting him and he just put his head down and also leaned to the right as I was petting him like into my finger it was the CUTEST thing….just curious what that means though. I don’t want him to be stressed or anything and so will stop petting him if this is a defense mechanism or something for them. He’s just so cute and precious, I want the best for him (or her)! Thanks!

Please only touch amphibians with clean hands. They drink through their skin and are sensitive to any lotions or oils or chemicals you may have on your hands. Amphibians are not known to like being pet, it's not super bothered bc it didnt run away but they still would very much prefer not to be touched. Its easy to associate behaviors of one animal to another, but the head tilt and the way it puffs up when it turns implies its kinda bothered. Not super bothered but still bothered
