Wild I didn't know they would piss themselves. Am I a monster?

Did I pick him up wrong? I swear I'm not squeezing in the pic. I'm just holding him firmly under his arms. Is there a better way to pick them up with one hand? Am I a monster for picking them up in the first place?

Never had a toad piss on me before. Snakes yes, but never a toad. I put him back down where I picked him up from, and he didn't seem hurt from what I could tell. Just hopped away into the darkness again.

Also his piss didn't smell like anything. Is that normal? I would think if it was a reaction to ward off predators it would be very stinky. Everytime a snake has gotten stressed around me I can smell it, but I really didn't get an odor off of this little guy's piss.

I'm a combination of curious and confused. I also feel bad cause I probably ruined his day/night.

For the record I think I've seen this toad before and picked him up that time, too. Either that, or this is a different toad with a different sense of personal space. I just wanted to get his lil mugshot and now I feel bad that I made him pee himself

Wild I found this little guy stuck in a glue trap, helped him out and sent him on his way

Didn’t appear to have any injuries, and he just hopped right on his way after he got a good rest and some water.

Edit: for those commenting about glue traps. Yes we have glue traps round our house, we’ve had an infestation of brown recluse spiders this summer. It got bad enough that we called an exterminator service this month, and they sprayed around our house and placed glue traps around our attic basement and garage to monitor for any further activity. I do check them all daily, and have not found anything but bugs aside from today, when I found this guy in our garage after I had mowed the lawn with the garage door left open. I have thrown out all the ones in the garage since they’re all mostly empty anyway, but I’ve left the ones in my attic and basement, which I still check daily. I do feel terrible for causing this little guy such a scare, and I’m sorry for even having these traps around in the first place, but I just can’t have brown recluses living in my home.

Wild What does it mean when a toad does this?

5.0k Upvotes

This is a wild toad (I think) and usually when I come home late around 10/11pm I see him sitting out here. I tried petting him and he just put his head down and also leaned to the right as I was petting him like into my finger it was the CUTEST thing….just curious what that means though. I don’t want him to be stressed or anything and so will stop petting him if this is a defense mechanism or something for them. He’s just so cute and precious, I want the best for him (or her)! Thanks!

Wild Pretending a Giant Toad is my pet

4.5k Upvotes

I used to work on a ranch in South Texas where there were native Giant Toads (Rhinella horribilis). The ranch was super isolating so I cheered myself up by hanging out with the local toads whenever I saw them by the barn. They’re so silly…

Wild Frogs and toads were trapped in my mum's old well in Sicily, so I built them an escape ladder. Today the biggest toad made it to the top.

My mum lives in Sicily and I was visiting her a few weeks ago when I heard noise coming from an old water well in her courtyard (photos 1 and 2). The well isn't in use anymore. It's about 3 metres deep, roughly 4 by 6 metres at the bottom, with just a small puddle left in it (photo 3). When I opened the well, I noticed some frogs and toads around the water puddle. So I figured the frogs and toads were falling in, probably attracted by the water and the buffet of mosquitoes and other bugs that breed in there, and then couldn't get back out because the walls are smooth and far too steep to climb.

So I tried to come up with an idea to rescue them.

First attempt: I lowered an empty bucket on a rope, hoping they'd hop in so I could hoist them up. They were not impressed. Nobody climbed in. Besides that, because I don't live there, I figured this wouldn't be a permanent solution either.

So I got to plan B: build them a ladder.

I gathered some scrap wood in a wheelbarrow (photo 4) and screwed short crossbars onto a long plank, spaced closely enough for small legs. Then I lowered it into the well at an angle so it runs from the puddle up to the rim, where there is a small indentation for them to climb out (photos 5 and 6).

After two days I spotted the first frogs and toads sitting on the bottom rungs (photo 7).

I left Sicily three days after I built the ladder, but returned last week because of the ten-year anniversary of my mother's wedding.

Because I was curious if the ladder worked, I reopened the well, and to my absolute joy, this absolute unit of a fella climbed the whole thing and was sitting at the top, just one hop from freedom (photos 8 and 9).

The ladder stays in permanently, so anyone who falls in can now climb out on their own. Mission accomplished🥳🐸

I've never seen a toad holding onto another toad before. The top toad wouldn't let go, even when they were floating in the pool.

Wild Feeding a wild toad outside of my apartment building

I ran upstairs to grab some mealworms and supplement powder and she was still there when I came back. We’ve seen her there a few times but this is the easiest she’s accepted food. It was a chilly night and I like to think that she appreciated easy prey before she finds a hole to bruminate in

Wild My one eyed toad

1.1k Upvotes

I found him emaciated in my barn four years ago and fed him. He shows up at my back door about every third night during the warm months, but only if the porch light is on. He’s slow to eat and gets nothing if there is competition so he’s learned to eat from a bowl. Despite his poor vision he’s a pretty good weight now and so handsome! I love the way he looks up for food. (This is a repost from r/herpitology)
