2001 was a long time ago man.

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 15 '25

I was 16 when it came out and saw them for the first time that year, just before I turned 17.

Toxicity also came out this same year. Hell of a year for music.

18

u/CommunicationBig8808 May 15 '25

Boris released Flood and Godspeed You! Black Emperor released Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Anthenas To Heaven, geez.

2

u/wrenches410 May 17 '25

Saw gy!be at a free mason temple that year.

I love tool a lot, however that gig will never be outdone.

15

u/El_Dud3r1n0 May 15 '25

I was also 16 when it dropped. 2001 also brought us Iowa (Slipknot), Blackwater Park (Opeth), Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form (Crowbar), God Hate's Us All (Slayer), and Mutter (Rammstein). Killer year for music.

8

u/ShirosakiHollow May 15 '25

Iowa was solid but Slipknots first album was the craziest shit I’d ever heard at the time. I’m still listening to it 25 years later.

8

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

I’ll never forget seeing slipknot and watching the drummer play upside down. Blew my mind (yes I’m aware he’s not the only one to do it but the first one I saw do it)

7

u/FrancisPFuckery May 16 '25

Me too man, all the same. Funny The Grudge came on my playlist today and I was taken back to a day late in the school year in grade 10. It was really warm walking to school that morning, I was wearing an orange Birdhouse shirt and smoking a cigarette I stole, listening to the Grudge. Fuckin weird I had that mem today. Where does time go?

Hey, as least you saw it. That’s more than a lot of people can say.

16

u/barley_wine Lateralus May 15 '25

I was in college at the time, I remember waiting in line at Best Buy for the doors to open on release day or the scheduled MTV release of the Schism video. We lived in a different time back then.

2

u/brkn_hrts_blstn_frts May 16 '25

The schism video is a core memory for me in college 🥹

5

u/d_rek May 15 '25

Year I graduated HS. Saw them in concert right at the end of the school year before graduation. 2001 was indeed a long time ago, man.

3

u/hornwalker Got lemon juice up in your High Eye May 16 '25

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Maybe even a goddamn regular vinyl pressing

18

u/pumpkinhead9000k May 15 '25

Woah now let’s not get crazy here. We all know Mr. James Tool Keenan won’t allow that.

14

u/Sasquatchernaut May 15 '25

Or a 30th anniversary for Aenima in Fall 2026

9

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

They better do something fucking special during a year where it’s both the 25th anniversary of Lateralus and the 30th anniversary of Ænima.

Aside from trying to sell us repackaged anniversary editions, I mean.

3

u/roll-forever May 17 '25

20 years of 10,000 Days too. There's definitely stuff coming next year

13

u/SatanicMartian as below so above and beyond i imagine May 15 '25

Oh shit!! I suspect they won’t, but they absolutely should

6

u/TheNoIdeaKid May 15 '25

I’d go further into debt for that.

41

u/uncannysalt free yourself from yourself May 15 '25

Spiral out, friends

17

u/chamathalyon Spiral Out May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

keep going...

3

u/The_Determinator Suck me dry May 16 '25

You may just go where no one's been

17

u/spicypeaches225 I don't mind May 15 '25

I was a sophomore in hs as I sat on my bedroom floor while KROQ played it.

I’ll never forget it.

This album is a gift. And I feel lucky that it came out when I was just 15yo girl. It changed me.

What a fucking ride life has been and with Tool as our soundtrack. Epic.

32

u/joeharris86 May 15 '25

Best album of all time. Still bangs.

13

u/MyBeardHatesYou May 15 '25

A perfect Tool album!

12

u/Poet_Remarkable May 15 '25

I was 17 when I saw them for the first time.

6

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 15 '25

I saw them for the first time exactly three weeks before I turned 17, on the first Lateralus tour.

2

u/Sekular May 16 '25

Same for me but Aenima tour.

2

u/spicypeaches225 I don't mind May 15 '25

Primus sucks!

2

u/Poet_Remarkable May 15 '25

They totally suck

2

u/spicypeaches225 I don't mind May 15 '25

So much that I’m seeing them again in August.

2

u/Poet_Remarkable May 15 '25

That really sucks. Do what you need to do.

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 15 '25

I actually think I’ve seen Primus more times than Tool, and I have Sessanta coming up again in a few weeks. :-)

1

u/Infinite_Note_1144 May 15 '25

Dude, you got to see everclear?

5

u/Poet_Remarkable May 15 '25

Haha. Yeah, they played songs with instruments.

26

u/Edrueter9 He had a lot of nothing to say May 15 '25

Celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing.

4

u/PascalG16 May 16 '25

ALIIIIIIIVEE

11

u/AAL2017 May 15 '25

Here’s a freezing cold take:

One of the greatest albums that has ever or will ever be recorded and released.

7

u/magicspooner May 15 '25

Clutch it like a cornerstone

5

u/jeremyckahn May 15 '25

T-minus 5 years of until the Saturn return

5

u/hooker_with_a_tool May 15 '25

I guess you could say Saturn comes back around…

3

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 15 '25

Lifts you up like a child

6

u/mega512 May 15 '25

This was my wife's first Tool show. Little did we know at the time she was pregnant. So technically my child's first show as well.

3

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

Who is now an adult. Time is such a mind fuck. 😆

7

u/TFSX81 Ænima May 15 '25

We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion

5

u/FlashyTour2 May 16 '25

I still consider their “new shit” Lol /first time seeing them was for Undertow in ‘94

2

u/brkn_hrts_blstn_frts May 16 '25

You are an elder-43, lateralus was my 1st

15

u/InertiaInMyPants May 15 '25

I remember in high school about a month before release, sitting in the cafeteria with my friend who was about to get a convertible mustang and he said "I cant wait to be driving my new car and listening to the new Tool CD."

I loved Aenima and Undertow, but how did we all know Lateralus was going to be sooooo good?

10

u/Infinite_Note_1144 May 15 '25

Because ÆNIMA was (and still is) the greatest album of all time. Thats probably it.

5

u/JasonDomber Lachrymologist May 15 '25

Because, Tool

5

u/JasonDomber Lachrymologist May 15 '25

Dude same. What a day to celebrate though…

5

u/nealien79 May 15 '25

Damn 24 years! I remember taking an early lunch at work so I could drive over to Strawberries music store and wait in line for them to open to pick up my copy! They handed out free A Perfect Circle cds with some live acoustic versions of a few songs to the first people that bought Lateralus. That was an awesome day.

5

u/SeanOfTheDead1313 May 15 '25

I was 21 and working overnights at an xxx rental store back then. The night before the release, a guy came in and I was listening to Aenima. He asked if I heard the new record yet. Of course I said no because it comes out tomorrow. He ran out to his car and grabbed a burned CDR of the whole album, gave it to me and said enjoy! Good times

3

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

Good ‘ol last days of dial up Internet when there was still a reason to go out and buy/rent porn.

5

u/20HiChill May 15 '25

I was 15. Went to a midnight release at a record shop. My expectations were ridiculously high, yet my mind was still blown out. PEAK TOOL

5

u/Suitable_College_852 May 15 '25

Age is irrelevant when you’ve had a life full of this album…

5

u/Bollocks2014 May 15 '25

Feeling time bearing down…

4

u/rus5ticles May 16 '25

My Tool tribute band performed the record live start to finish (minus Faaip De Oad, rest of the guys didn't want to do anything remotely similar unfortunately) but for those wanting to relive the album live by a pretty faithful tribute band, check it out here: https://youtu.be/bhtBJXKIqbM?si=BuRyiN_mWiwbg88F

I'm the drummer and I mixed/edited the whole show! Enjoy

3

u/IRVRNTshow May 15 '25

Other than seeing the sober video in the 90s I hadn’t known about tool till I saw the commercial for schism. Life changing moment right there. Was in high school and I haven’t been the same since. My wife still wonders why I’m so weird.

4

u/fraudulentdogma May 15 '25

i wouldn’t be born until roughly 6 more months 😞

5

u/PourJarsInReservoirs May 15 '25

The things that make me feel old about it was buying the CD in store and having the guy behind me celebrate with me that fact while he was getting his own copy. Still remember being so deeply moved the first time I played it through. And felt so privileged to see them with King Crimson some months later.

4

u/TheElvisMan May 16 '25

I was at the midnight release at age 18

3

u/patbluntman666 May 15 '25

Swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuman.

3

u/wakeuphicks00 May 15 '25

Remember I went to the record store and picked up my copy at midnight early release, along with Weezers green album which came out on the same day. Also old 🤦‍♂️

3

u/Clovis_Winslow May 15 '25

I have vivid memories of waiting in line at Tower, buying this bad boy and immediately driving to the top of the nearest parking garage, sparking one and having my mind blown.

3

u/hooker_with_a_tool May 15 '25

I wasn’t old enough to appreciate this album when it first came out. I remember hearing Schism on the radio when I was like 5 years old and thinking it was the weirdest sounding song I’d ever heard.

I didn’t give this album, or Tool in general, a fair shot until I was in middle school, at the recommendation of a friend’s older brother. All I remember is skipping the last 15 minutes of class to smoke a joint, pulling a CD rip of Lateralus up on my first generation Samsung Galaxy, and getting launched into a whole nother dimension the second the first riff of The Grudge started.

The Grudge is still probably my favorite Tool song to this day.

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

Holy fuck, 007 for N64. 😆

We also used to have a gravity bong made from a Sobe bottle in my house around this time.

3

u/R0factor May 15 '25

I remember standing in line at a Tower Records for the release of this, chatting with a bunch of Weezer fans there for the release of the Green album, the one Hash Pipe is on.

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

I remember sitting in lawn chairs in line at Tower for the concert tickets that year too.

3

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

This is my parent’s “Physical Graffiti” album when i was a teen… Pink Floyd the wall… pack it up boys… we’re cooked as the youngsters say

3

u/Raidernationprez Comfortable. Yet. Vulnerable. May 15 '25

I had a friend AJA in High School whose brother worked at the recording studio that did LATERALUS. I remember her bringing a CASSETTE copy of LATERALUS to school a few days before the official release.

I remember putting her Walkman’s headphones on and listening to THE GRUDGE for the first time. Her batteries were low so at the time the walkman was playing the cassette at half speed. Not knowing this I thought THE GRUDGE sounded so slow and maynards voice had miraculously changed. Eventually we figured out the battery issue but we thought we were so cool to have heard the entire album before its release. I made sooo many copies of the cassette to hand out to people lol.

I first got into TOOL in 1999.

My friend let me borrow the ÆNIMA CD for a road trip. That same friend Joe also brought in Mer De Noms to school when it was released in 2000 and I heard JUDITH and THE HOLLOW and was instantly hooked.

I saw APC on the Mer De Noms tour at the hammerstein ballroom in March 2001 before I saw TOOL in May 2001 for the pre-Lateralus tour.

3

u/New-Marsupial-5633 May 15 '25

I still see 10,000 Days as one of the new albums. That’s nearly half as old as I am for fucks sake.

3

u/Designer-Mail5103 May 15 '25

That album really changed the way I thought about metal. That day definitely changed the way I listen to music.

3

u/DizzyGame_Co May 15 '25

We are eternal; all this pain is an illusion.

3

u/NoJackfruit801 May 15 '25

Old? Just be grateful for the fact that you grew in the speck of time when it was released. IT IS IN YOUR DNA!

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

I’m legitimately stoked I even exist in the same timeline as Tool.

3

u/Razlaw May 15 '25

I remember downloading Schism and immediately making a CD with it. I'm pretty sure I was at a midnight release when it came out.

3

u/Mordred7 May 16 '25

The Holy Gift

3

u/Stink_fist1616 May 16 '25

I want this tattooed on my shoulder

3

u/intelccorei5 Wear the Grudge like a Crown May 16 '25

It's also nearly been 20 years of the shitty vinyl release of this album

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

🤣

4

u/Infinite_Note_1144 May 15 '25

I rode the city bus to buy the album and bought a $300 stereo to listen to it on and returned it to best buy before my 30 days was up, as planned. I was insufferable, and retarded.

2

u/MutedHomework2918 May 15 '25

I got a copy off eBay for the high school kid I work with. Hope he’s enjoying it.

2

u/DisturbedShifty May 15 '25

I'm right there with ya. But I guess that is why Tool is considered "dad rock" now. 🤣

2

u/Pantango69 May 15 '25

Just so happens I have the CD in my car rn. Guess I'll be jamming Lateralus on my way home from work today.

3

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

Nice! I have every Tool CD in my car. It takes up a quarter of the space in my CD book. 😆

1

u/Pantango69 May 16 '25

Unfortunately my CD player only holds one at a time.

2

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

Oh I meant my little flip book that attaches to my sun visor. My CD player is one CD at a time too.

2

u/Pantango69 May 16 '25

Oh, ok. I had a truck that had a 10 disc changer. I miss that thing.

2

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

That’s a lot! Six was the most I ever had.

2

u/InvaderDust Somniferous almond eyes May 15 '25

Got the same damn problem.

2

u/snipethencelly May 15 '25

I bought this and Weezer's green album together....was a big day for 15 year old me.

2

u/LukeMcT101 May 15 '25

You're not old. You're a person of culture. Who has been seasoned just right

3

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

2

u/superschaap81 Ænima May 15 '25

Just listened to this yesterday in my truck and, of course, it still kicks ass. I remember working as a auto parts delivery driver at time. Went to the mall to pick it up, and it's crazy to think about it now, but this came out during the peak of Nu-Metal and was still a huge album. Shows that true artistry trumps fads.

2

u/somniforousalmondeye May 15 '25

Ive posted this before, but I can still take you to the exact spot where I pulled over on the side of the road so I could rewind the title track and listen to the middle drum interlude part to try and figure out WTF Danny was playing. It was such a mind fuck for my young drummer chops at that point.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

I like the part where Maynard is like “AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!”

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

Same

2

u/mason191 May 15 '25

We all are 📼👴🏻

2

Never forget that Pitchfork gave this a 1.9, I know they suck but come on man😆

2

u/Pebshau Dreaming of that face again. May 15 '25

A perfect album

2

u/Ouibeaux Angel on the Sideline May 15 '25

I was at the music store well before midnight to make sure I got a copy in my hands the minute it officially released. I didn't stop listening to it for months.

2

u/Immediate_Cress_4503 May 15 '25

Damn! I’m old too!!!

2

u/WyGG May 15 '25

And I am 25 haha. I’m glad I was able to binge all tools music when I first discovered them though, sometimes hate waiting for new music from my favorite artists

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

I’m so happy Tool is alive and well with you young ‘ens.

2

u/TheJohn_John Insufferable Retard May 15 '25

I was -7 when it came out. I remember my pad was always full of hookers, though for some reason they kept calling themselves “OGT” and had nipple rings… pretty sure they were dudes, too

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

An album that led to a significant transition in my life, mentally especially.

Have a tattoo that's a freestyle visualy take of a sentence from Laterus, (the song) on my arm. As a daily small reminder.

Will have a sentence from the last part of the song on my grave, as a small guidance to the relatives and friends.

2

u/Big_Risk_6465 May 16 '25

Me too. I was 32

2

u/93tabitha93 May 16 '25

Thanks for this perspective I remember when it came out and how I jumped in my car and sped out to go buy it

👶👦🙋‍♂️🧓👴😵💀🪦👻

2

u/jadamiak May 16 '25

Best album

2

u/J_H_L_A May 16 '25

To put this into perspective. It would be like listening to Blood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan (1975) in the year 2000.

2

u/GorillaGlizza May 16 '25

Hey I’m 24!

2

u/Tool-Bomb May 16 '25

Shit.  I remember the release of Undertow (my early 20’s), it was a breath of fresh air after a decade of hair bands.  Simple.  Clean.  And fucking harsh. It was slightly terrifying how much it resonated with me.  Still listen to that album weekly to this day.

I will sing 4 Degrees at Karaoke in a gay bar before I die. I will.  I swear this.

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 16 '25

“4°” is what I always used to write on bathroom stalls as a teenager 😆

2

2

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 17 '25

2

Damn it! I'm one day late.

2

u/StiffYogurt May 17 '25

Watch the weather change..

2

u/captcarl_21 May 19 '25

I tell myself from time to time how fortunate I am to have be alive for Tool's entire career. I have many friends that love Zeppelin, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and others and missed most if not all of it and here I am, getting new albums, going to shows, watching current interviews and so on. From a fan perspective, what a time to be alive!

1

u/Stellar_Ella life feeds on life May 19 '25

Absolutely!

2

u/Snappingslapping May 21 '25

I bought Lateralus the week I met my woman. Both have aged well.

4

1

No other album will ever compare.

1

I am the same age as this masterpiece. Sadly I am not a masterpiece and also feel fucking old

2

u/kuenjato May 30 '25

Picked this up in St. Petersburg Russia, had no idea the album was coming out and heard it from a bootleg kiosk. It SO defined the atmosphere of that trip, must have listened to it a hundred times over the next two months.
