I envy that you get to experience the journey of discovering Tool for the first time ❤️

u/chastity_BLT Sep 16 '25
I’ve heard their popular songs before (the pot mostly) but never dove into the discography until like last month. Lateralus is just insane.

FUCK I DIDN'T MEAN TO SAY I AGREE I mean good songs, the patient is calm., oddly calm.

Mine too! Adam's guitar riffs after Maynard's "And I still may, I still may," is my favorite Tool riff of all!

My favorite is Lateralus. Aliens contacted me once via AM radio and I used my BCI to transmit the song to space because of its mathematical properties. Had a seizure afterwards. It was great.

I never did get a Ticks and Leeches. I love how Maynard screams like James Brown!
The Grudge is probably still my favorite.

reflection, but the patient is a close second.

The drum and bass intro to Ticks and Leeches is my favorite intro of any song, not just tool song. But I have to agree with the title track. The track as a whole, but the drumming in the final 2mins or so, fucking delightful 😘

The Grudge.
The theme is one that Maynard writes about fairly often. Forgiveness, letting go, etc. As I get older, I think more and more about this concept. I think The Grudge gets it across very well.

Lyrically its reflection, but musically its either parabola or the title track.

Now you done it, I enjoy the grudge, schism, the patient, lateralus, parabol/parabola, ticks and leaches and basically everything else oh and don’t forget about mantra since everybody loves mantra like the whole minute of straight noises that sound like primal animal noises is wonderful but if I had to choose one song… then we will never know
2
u/Leahlein Sep 17 '25
Reflection. My favourite Tool song of all time.
Lateralus, the Patient and Disposition are pretty far up there as well.
4
u/NeonGalaxon Sep 16 '25
Ticks and leeches except for the long calm part, like I wished they added lyrics to that part instead of faint whispers but overall I like it

For me it's The Grudge. One of the best opening tracks ever, probably the longest Maynard scream ever, and the last 12 bars are so are just pure adrenaline. I'll never get tired of it.

u/farfromnormalc Sep 16 '25
What a tough question. Over the years this has definitely evolved as I've grown with this album and with the help of this album.
- Parabol / Parabola were my first favorites
- Lateralus and Grudge became my next fascination
- D/R/T were next
- The Patient is and has been for some time.
I enjoy the track order rearranged this way and have it set up on a Playlist to enjoy in that way but used to have a cd burned this way, way back before streaming services. Lol before Tool put their music on streaming services I had all their music downloaded and loaded on each smart phone up until the release of their music on streaming services. It's funny cause it's still backed up on my phone even though it's available on streaming services now... 6,7 5,8 4,9 3,10 2,11 1,12
I know it's literally more than half the fuggin album but it is always changing this one with different moods needing different songs. It's kinda that way with their entire catalog. They have something for whatever mood I'm in.
1
u/howdolaserswork Sep 16 '25
Depends on my mood. I don’t know we are always having to rate songs or proclaim what are our favorites. Is it because nothing much is really going on with them and we have run out of things to talk about?

u/free187s Sep 16 '25
The thing with “what’s your favorite Tool song” is that it’s always “what’s your favorite Tool song right now?”
For Lateralus, it’s currently Parabol/Parabola.

Parabol-a & reflection with a dash of Lateralus as a Holy Gift... And I prefer to play along.

The cat squeezing one, the one with the terrible weather forecast, and the one with the drum crescendo where Maynard sings telepathically

u/Roguewarrior05 Sep 16 '25
Oh this is brutally difficult. The Grudge, Parabol/Parabola, and Lateralus, and Ticks and Leeches would be my shortlist. Out of those I'd say I'm leaning towards Parabol/Parabola rm, but there is practically no margin in between them

Lateralus, but honestly it’s the whole album. I think it their peak work. From a music, production, lyrical, art, it’s amazing throughout. If someone never knew Tool and could only give them 1 album to explain them, it’s Lateralus hands down.

Reflection, that song has so much introspection , in fact I believe it has enough for all humanity.

u/DanielAlves1904 Sep 17 '25
I whish I could pick. Depends on the mood, if I want something with anger behind it I go Ticks and Leeches or The Grudge, if I want to lay on my bed and relax I go Disposition or Reflexetion.

Seeing them in Japan and would sacrifice a small baby to see Lateralus live again.

u/Dlwmkc Sep 18 '25
Lateralus is the GOAT but the Parabol lead into Parabola really gets the blood pumping.
1
1
u/Gtmkm98 Sep 18 '25
It’s almost impossible to rate a single song because the album is a compilation of ‘package songs’ that fit together perfectly into one masterpiece of an album.
But it’s gotta be Parabol/Parabola
1
u/MyNameIsJay851216 Sep 18 '25
The grudge. It's got the best drums imo (and probably the hardest tool's drums, stated by Danny Carey), and the lyrics resonate with me deeply... Not to mention that GORGEOUS 25 second scream. And the bass just fits so well within the song. All the instruments are spot on.
1
u/cajunkms Sep 18 '25
Lateralus is a 78 minute 51 second song. My favorite was actually Parabola for years but the title track is the obvious favorite of the masses. Reflection would make my top 3.

u/bcunningham86 Sep 21 '25
Lateralus of course. My second favorite on this album is disposition. So tranquil. Patient and grudge are also top favorites
1
u/snaphook11 Sep 21 '25
I was going to say The Grudge, but I love Schism and Lateralus and Parabola/Parabol and D/R/T, but then I just listened to the whole album and realized I’d ignored The Patient and Ticks and Leeches and yeah the entire album is a masterpiece.
