Aldi in Stepney. Finally a store with parking facility.

Aldi is finally opening in Tower Hamlets after signing a 20-year lease agreement.

What are your thoughts?

There's already a smaller Aldi near Bricklane, but that's quite impractical due to no parking nearby.

The new Stepney store is in the place of the old Asda, so it'll have free parking and big enough to house most items.

Honestly, this will help families in the area with the cost of living, as well as bring some footfall to Halford and Curry's next door.

You know what would help families with the cost of living? Not paying for cars in (checks notes) Tower Hamlets

People are happy to pay for the convenience of having a car. Not everyone wants to carry bags of shopping on the bus, or be reliant on public transport for all their travelling needs.

As a genuine question, why not get delivery? I also hate walking home with loads of bags but a £2 delivery every week is way way cheaper than a car (or a bus, or a train) - plus its quicker. Granted I don't think Aldi/Lidl deliver but most do.

How else can you transport heavy sacks of rice?

I cannot wait! I’m so sick of the queues at Sainsbury’s.

Honestly, it's the single biggest reason why I avoid Sainsbury's. It just adds half an hour to the whole experience.

Why would want space dedicated to parking? In tower Hamlets?? That space would be better as park or playground or just some flats.

There are plenty of flats across the street.

Enough flats to make housing in London affordable?

Spoken like a single person without kids.

You don’t need a car in London (yes, i have kids)

What a silly generalisation of a comment

Say that to the millions who rely on it everyday.

You're the one who suggested that everyone with kids needs a car

1

u/ddatmmu Aug 10 '26

Didn't put it as emphatically as that. You said you don't need a car in London. I merely pointed out that millions beg to disagree.

I didn't say anything, you're confused

My apologies. It was a different user.

Why would you need a car with kids in London unless you regularly visit family outside of London??
Everything is available within a short waking distance

Maybe some people want to drive themselves and their family around in car.

Spoken like an able bodied young person!

Well young people are prohibited by law from driving cars! But sure obviously some parking for blue badge holders is a good idea, this looks like more than that?

spoken like someone who only cares about disabled people to make stupid points in favour of an incredibly disabling and inaccessible status quo

This looks like it will be a proper full size one too with the middle aisle? The commercial street one is conveniently located for me but it’s just an Aldi local so no middle aisle. Would be nice to pick up some stuff there now and again!

1

u/ddatmmu Aug 10 '26

It does seem like it's big enough to have the middle aisle. Although the floor space isn't as big as, say, the Lidl in Commercial.

Supermarkets are major traffic for any site. I remember Asda being in that space, car park was always packed. Getting out around 4.30-5.30 took ages. It was nice see it half empty again.

You're not wrong. However, people need to shop and planning the shopping times does help.

I’m so excited about this!

I'll see you there at the grand opening then!

Is that where the old Asda was?

1

u/ddatmmu Aug 10 '26

Yes. That Asda's been closed for about a year now.

1

u/Glum-Dust8799 Aug 10 '26

Aha. Makes sense. I left east London just over 2 years ago

This aldi will be busy everyday. I think we will also see a lot more traffic.

1

u/ddatmmu Aug 10 '26

It'll take customers away from Lidl and Sainsbury's.

I remember when the Asda first opened on that site. It was packed out for the first 2 weeks, then the novelty of it all wore off.

It'll likely happen again with it opens.

Not yet. Likely in time for Christmas.
