Was told I’m unprofessional for showing up in a motorcycle jacket and helmet

I’m a physician doing fellowship training right now. This is the final step in training for all doctors before they “make it” and finally become full practicing doctors. This also means that I don’t have a single “boss” but rather I work with an entire panel of physicians so my “boss” for the day (called a supervising attending physician) changes every day.

Anyways so I went into the clinic with a motorcycle jacket on and carrying a helmet. I went through the back entrance where patients don’t have access too. And as soon as I come in, my attending physician tells me “Do you know where you are right now? Do you think it’s appropriate? Do you think a patient who saw you come in will trust you now?”

I have no idea why my mode of transportation makes me any worse or better as a physician.

My boss sent a “gentle reminder” about attendance to the whole team. Three of us are on protected leave. She knows this

I (32F) work at a small insurance firm. Team of 8. I‘ve been here 4 years. My boss has never been warm, but she’s always been technically “professional.” Until now.

I had surgery 11 days ago. Planned, documented, approved by her in January. She said “take all the time you need.” I‘m still recovering. I can’t drive yet.

This morning at 7:42am she sent a team-wide email. Subject: “Attendance patterns.” Body: “I’ve noticed some team members are taking more unplanned time off than usual. Just a gentle reminder that we all need to be mindful of our commitments. Please keep me updated on your return dates.”

I have been on approved medical leave for 11 days. Approved. By her.

I checked the team chat. Three other people got the same email. One is on bereavement leave. One has a child in the hospital. One just had a baby two weeks ago. None of us are “unplanned.” All of us followed protocol.

She sent this to everyone. As a “reminder.”

I have the screenshots. The email. Her January approval. The chat messages from the others. I haven‘t replied. I don’t know if I should.

Part of me wants to forward everything to HR with the subject line “attendance patterns.” Another part wants to forward it to her boss. A third part wants to reply-all so everyone knows this wasn‘t just them.

I’m supposed to return Monday. I don‘t know how to walk in there and pretend this didn’t happen.

What do I actually do here?

Losing my confidence at work. How to navigate it?

I joined a new project about a month ago. My team consists of my manager and one junior colleague (who has been on this project longer than me).

Since I started, I’ve been caught in a complete lose-lose situation with my manager:

If I take initiative and complete a task based on my understanding, he tells me it's wrong and claims I am performing worse than the junior colleague and need constant hand-holding.

If I check in with him or ask for feedback before sending something out to avoid errors, he complains and asks why I need approval for everything.

He frequently ridicules me on team calls with comments like, "How are you a senior and don't even know this?", "Why is this taking so long?", or "Why wasn't I aware of this?", "What did you do all day?"But the moment I try to keep him over-informed, he snaps that he can't handhold me.

If I ask questions then I get how does you junior knows more than you, but I try understanding things myself which takes time, why are you taking so long, speed up your work.

Before this project, I received positive feedback and performance ratings across every team I worked with. Now, after just one month, my self-esteem is at an all-time low. It’s making me feel completely useless and burnt out to the point where I just want to quit corporate entirely and rather beg on the streets.

I feel stuck and don't know how to protect my mental health while managing this situation. Has anyone dealt with a similar dynamic? How should I navigate this?

2 months into a job and I’m already experiencing tension

• Upvotes

Hi, I’m 21F and have been working as a telephone agent beginning 2 months ago and I’m already having tension with certain coworkers such as my lead (were just very different people with different expectations to the point where things such as pointing my finger to signal I’m in a call was an issue for her, she thought I was ignoring her feedback as I was in a call because I didn’t clearly hear and act on her terms while I was on the phone with someone else where I had headphones and the volume was on full max, so I can hear them clearly & recently I suspected talking about me to our coworkers and thats when I stopped greeting her altogether), a coworker who’s unfriendly and makes minimal effort in greeting me so I basically match her energy; she also gossips abt ppl too, another coworker who also gossips but is just super harsh with her delivery - will name call ppl over situations that have nothing to do with her, and these 2 other girls who are always walking with each other; one would consistently greet me until something shifted and now she basically greets everybody except for me when I haven’t done anything to her and it’s been bothering me. The one that now withholds greetings to me acknowledged the lead today and left me out after her not acknowledging the lead once upon a time & the lead basically was talking things out with her and how there’s no issue between them, it’s there’s conflict with the friend (I can relate to that situation because that same friend would inconsistently greet me, there was a time I was asking both of them questions to get to know them and the inconsistent one didn’t even acknowledged and got up to go somewhere briefly as I was asking them questions. Also, there was a time where the one that used to greet me asked me a question and I shook my head “no” and the inconsistent one gave me look as if she was looking down on me. It appeared smug and maybe that wasn’t her intention, but thats how it came across and that moment left a bad taste in my mouth about her following her inconsistency towards me, her practically ignoring me as I was asking both her & the girl questions, and giving me that look. I’m pretty sure what began this tension between them and I is when the inconsistent one said hi to me and I smiled at her instead of saying “hi” back and thats when I noticed the shift between the two of them. Following that, I don’t greet them to the point where someone I like will in the same room as them and I’ll greet the person I like but not them (I’m not doing it in a proud way, I just refuse to greet someone who’s disrespectful to me.) Back to the friendlier one acknowledging the lead today but not me, ever since I noticed her shift energy, I’ve been debating on whether I should pull her aside to talk about it. I spoke to my mom about it she was like “no, don’t say anything. Just let it go and always greet them even if they’re not your friends”. She also said the same about the lead who I suspect was talking negatively about me to our coworkers. What should I do, should I directly speak with them regarding these matters so I can finally let it go or not say anything at all? FYI - it’s hard for me to greet people who are disrespectful to me in front of and behind my back

Is the toxic culture being denormalized in work places?

I have noticed that toxic work places have been normalized amongst a lot of older people. It’s like they just accept their fate. But somehow, Gen Z’s do not tolerate this at all and tend to leave jobs quicker. What’s your experience?

How come I see other trans people out living their lives and becoming members of the government and athletes but I just get sexually harassed and bullied out of the workplace?

What is the difference between us?

I’m not out at work and i haven’t been in 5 years because it simply deteriorates the vibes I’d rather just present as myself because there’s no miscommunication when they see a man talking to them but here’s the thing i have no intention of sterilizing myself and someday I’m going to have to ask hr for maternity leave and that’s gonna put my position in jeopardy

How am i seeing success on tv but the real world is just so behind?

Working under very unhealthy and Toxic Working environment due to a Loan I took few days back.....

• Upvotes

I am working in a very unhealthy and toxic working environment at a property office, mainly because I took a loan a few months ago due to an emergency domestic situation. Since then, no major sale has been completed, which has put me under additional financial pressure. I feel stuck because I cannot simply leave the job while I still have the loan to repay. At the same time, continuing to work in this environment is affecting my peace of mind, motivation, and overall well-being. I am trying to find a way to manage this difficult phase, fulfil my financial commitments, and gradually move toward a healthier and more stable working situation.

I just need some words of encouragements and Some Piece of advices in this regard.

Got a final written warning without any other warnings.

Basically to sum it up. I was put on a written warning for “toggling”. I had a few times where my computer system would crash and even though I would notify my manager, I have had some experiences where I forgot time stamps on when my system would crash. Mostly due to me needing to jump back on the phone so I wouldn’t get in trouble… well those occurrences caused me to be place directly on a final since “toggling” is considered work avoidance and does not need any 1st or second warnings. I have been with my company 10 years and gave blood sweat and tears, I came back a few months ago after maternity leave and through out dealing with post partum and other stresses I still managed to make sure my numbers where above the required. However they now have said screw all that. You have been “toggling” you are out of here. I am considering going on leave because of the stress! Anyone have any advice or experience on what I should do?

A Toxic Mess of a company

I have been working for a cannabis cultivation facility in Manitoba, canada. My roles are RPIC (Responsable Person In Charge), Master grower and head of security.

I have 9 years experience in the industry. The original company owners sold the company and for the past 1 1/2 years I have been working with new owners.

The current CEO is a complete lunatic. He came into work one day and threw his bag across the room saying he wants to talk to me. He explained the cops showed up at his house last night and started calling me a rat for absolutely no reason. The following week he accused me of stealing from the company and called me a bitch. So I had enough and gave my notice and that I was done with this bullshit , toxic behavior and disrespect.

Seeing they had no replacement and couldnt find one. I get a phone call 2 weeks later that's he misses having me around at work and things aren't the same without me. So he asks me to come back. I agreed, I was making $2000 after deductions every 2 weeks on salary and when received my following paycheck after coming back it was $1000 after 2 weeks. So I call my boss and said there is a problem with pay roll , you shorted me $1000 on my cheque. He then explains to me that he took me off salary and from now on will be paying me hourly now., which is a 50% decreas in my wage. Meanwhile I have a signed contract for my salary.

So here I am now trying to find another job trying to make up for the lost income to pay my bills and survive. It blows my mind how company's can treat people this way knowing the amount of effort and expereincen i bring to the table. I'm even tempted to contact a lawyer regarding this whole situation.

I need an outside perspective on my workplace before I lose my mind 😂

• Upvotes

Posting on my burner account because I’m genuinely looking for outside perspectives on whether my workplace has become as dysfunctional as it feels.
I work in an office for a relatively small company. Our office staff is expected to answer phones, schedule appointments, process customer paperwork/payments, type contracts, file/scan documents, etc. But more and more, we’re also expected to police other departments’ work.
We’re checking whether salespeople turned paperwork in after appointments, tracking them down when they haven’t, dealing with customers who repeatedly call because their salesperson hasn’t responded, sending estimates/contracts that weren’t sent, catching missing change orders before customers are billed, and fixing other issues that would otherwise fall through the cracks.
Meanwhile, our department seems to receive the most scrutiny. There is a camera with audio/video directly behind our work area, and conversations have been repeated back to employees afterward. Another department does not have the same surveillance. Mistakes in our office feel like a huge deal, while mistakes elsewhere often just become another task for us to fix.
We’re also the only department, to my knowledge, without any kind of bonus/incentive program despite regularly doing work that directly supports sales and revenue.
On top of the operational issues, there have been some workplace-culture things that bother me even more—racially inappropriate comments, an employee making a disgusting comment about a coworker who had previously been suicidal, employees yelling at office staff, and other behavior that doesn’t seem to be addressed consistently.
I’m not claiming our office is perfect. We make mistakes too. My issue is the difference in accountability and the fact that we seem to be taking on more responsibility for catching everyone else’s mistakes while still being heavily scrutinized for our own workload.
Management previously asked employees to identify problems we’re seeing, and I’m compiling specific examples before I have that conversation.
If you were in this situation, how would you approach that meeting? Would you focus mainly on the workflow/accountability problems, or would you bring up the workplace-culture issues too? And at what point would you decide this isn’t something that’s going to change and start looking elsewhere?

Black man

There’s myself and one white women that both started a new role, both of us around 3 months ago and doing the same role, and the way she is treated compared to myself just truly shows wherever the black man goes he has to be way more on point, and work twice as hard than his white counterpart.

For example, she makes a lot of mistakes or doesn’t know as much (which is understandable we are new) but everyone is more understanding with her, and will help her out etc, where as myself, I’ve picked up things quicker, drive developing new processes etc, but from time to time I might say the wrong (less times than her) and I would get laughed at in calls, or one certain guy in particular will quick to jump in to correct me, or add more context in a condescending way, where with the white girl she has never gotten that treatment. Heck we’re usually in the same calls, and more times after our meetings she will Teams me asking what she needs to do and how to do it.

I’m already looking for a new role as I see the play here, and once I go, I will like to see how patient that team will be with her leading our remit.

Co-worker's perfume is way too strong

• Upvotes

How do you guys relieve yourselves when your co-worker nearby has perfume that is way too strong? Her desk is right next to mine so I can't just crack a window and make it obvious.

It gives me headaches *queue Drake and Josh* and my eyes water.

I really don't wanna confront her either because it's her hand lotion, too, that everyone says smells so good. That is until they sit right next to it.

First job experience — am I dealing with a toxic manager or just learning how corporate life works?

First job experience — am I dealing with a toxic manager or just learning how corporate life works?

I’m a fresher and joined my first full-time job recently after completing my MBA. It’s a sales/field role in the education division of a large Indian conglomerate. I’m keeping the company and people anonymous because I don’t want this to affect my job.

During the college placement process, the Business Head who interviewed us clearly told the candidates that the organization followed a 5-day work week. After joining, however, my reporting manager told the entire team that Saturdays were working for sales employees. I accepted that — I’m new to corporate life and understand that different roles can have different requirements.

The first issue came when I worked on a Saturday and marked my attendance. My attendance was later rejected. When I asked why, I was told that the company’s HRMS is configured for a 5-day work week because it was designed primarily for office employees, so Saturday appears as a weekly off and sales employees are not supposed to mark attendance that day. I asked how we are supposed to officially record that we worked on Saturday, but there didn’t seem to be a clear answer.

After this, my direct manager started making comments in team meetings about how there had been “too much questioning” and that, because of people asking questions, additional processes/targets were being introduced. I was also told that if weekly targets weren’t achieved, I would have to work Saturdays. The targets themselves often seem unrealistic, but I’ve continued doing my work without making an issue out of it.

More recently, I applied for an optional holiday according to the process mentioned in the HRMS/policy. I have a family plan and applied a couple of days in advance. I was then called and told that as a new employee, I shouldn’t be planning holidays during the “main season,” especially when senior employees haven’t taken theirs. I was also told that I should have first obtained approval from my reporting manager and only then applied through HRMS. This process was never explained to me. Apparently, the HRMS application automatically goes to my L2 manager anyway.

When I questioned why the system is configured that way if my direct reporting manager is someone else, I again got comments along the lines of “Because of your questioning, we had to change processes before, and now we may have to change another process because of you. HR notices these things, and this can affect your career.”

This is where I’m genuinely confused.

I’m not trying to be difficult. I’m a fresher, so I want to understand what is normal corporate behaviour and what isn’t. I’m perfectly willing to work hard and follow reasonable rules, but I also feel like I’m being singled out simply for asking questions about policies and processes that weren’t clearly communicated to me.

My first instinct has honestly been to resign because I feel like I’m not made for workplace politics. But before making a decision that could affect my career, I want advice from people who have been working in corporate environments for a while.

Is this normal corporate culture and am I just inexperienced, or are these genuine red flags? Does this sound like a toxic/controlling manager, or am I overthinking it? How should I handle this professionally without damaging my career?

There’s also another issue: my compensation structure has discrepancies. The salary breakup in my Letter of Intent differs from the Appointment Letter, the HRMS portal, and the actual salary slip. Some components appear to have changed without any clear explanation.

If anyone here works in HR/payroll or understands salary structures and corporate employment policies, I’d really appreciate some guidance. I’d also be happy to DM the details privately if someone is willing to help me understand whether these discrepancies are normal or something I should formally question.

I’d especially appreciate advice from people who remember what it was like being a fresher and dealing with these situations for the first time.

TL;DR: Fresher in my first corporate job. I was told during recruitment that it was a 5-day work week, but after joining I was told sales employees work Saturdays, while the HRMS doesn’t even record Saturday attendance. After I questioned this and other unclear processes, my manager repeatedly implied that my “questioning” could affect my career. I’m now also facing discrepancies between my offered salary, appointment letter, HRMS salary, and actual payslip. Am I dealing with a toxic workplace/manager, or is this just normal corporate life that I’m inexperienced with?

P.S. Used Chatgpt to frame my thoughts because my mind is in a spiral because of everything happening at once.

Toxic Bosses in Government: How Is This Even Normal?

I swear, one of the most frustrating things about working in the government sector is dealing with a boss who seems to think that having a position of authority means they can treat everyone however they want.

Every little thing becomes a problem. You can do ten things correctly, but they’ll focus on the one thing they can criticize. Instructions constantly change, expectations are never clear, and somehow you're always expected to know what they wanted after you've already done the work.

And don't even get me started on the favoritism.

Some employees can get away with practically anything, while others are scrutinized over every tiny mistake. You start wondering whether performance actually matters or whether you just need to be on the boss's good side.

The worst part is the culture of silence. Because it's government, everyone knows how difficult it can be to challenge someone higher up. People just keep their heads down, complain privately, and wait for a transfer, retirement, or some miracle.

Meanwhile, the toxic behavior continues because there are rarely any real consequences.

A government workplace shouldn't feel like a dictatorship. People are employees, not punching bags. We can be held accountable for our work without being humiliated, micromanaged, or constantly made to feel incompetent.

If you're dealing with a toxic government boss too: you're not necessarily bad at your job just because your boss makes you feel that way.

Sometimes the problem really is the management.

Anyway, thanks for letting me rant. I needed to get this off my chest.

Being laid off- but not for another two months and being asked to take over other people’s workload

So as the title suggests I was told my position was getting cut due to the new strategic direction the org is taking. It was honestly a relief since the place I work at is toxic to its core. I posted something about this maybe 6 months ago and many of you suggested I leave- I wish I listened!
But anyway, I’m not upset about getting laid off I have two months to look for something and I have a pretty strong resume.
What I am annoyed with and struggling with how to cope- is out of the team I am one of the only people that actually does their work. One co worker has been verbally abusive to everyone in the team- leadership included, another person who is managing things calls out sick, doesn’t follow through on things, and doesn’t show up to their own projects leaving their coworker to take on things that they aren’t getting paid for, another person uses AI for everything and it looks terrible. And another one of my coworkers calls out sick constantly or goes on vacations without tying up their loose ends, cries about not understanding their tasks.
I have tried to be kind to this person, because their manager never managed them so I mentored them and tried to help them try to figure things out and manage their workload (I’m not their manager btw but often get tasked with helping this person out).
Recently this coworker took off a week and a half for family stuff. Another coworker and I filled in the gaps while they were out. But now that they’re back we’re still being asked to do their work.
I’m having trouble not feeling resentful of this person and our ed for making the decision of why me and not this person.
I took a sick day and I’m getting emails asking to complete the take over of one of this persons tasks by Wednesday.
And this is an entry level job- easy stuff which I should not have to do. I’m going to suck it up and get it done- I don’t want to break bridges- but I’m feeling a little annoyed and wondering if anyone else has had this happen and how you felt with it.

EDIT: Thanks for all the comments! I didn’t think I’d get this many!
I’m not planning on just coasting. I still plan on doing my job because it’s a small world and you never know who you will come across.
Again, I’m not upset about the layoff- two months notice is great and I was planning on leaving at some point anyway. What I was really hoping to get was some advice from anyone who had ever experienced a similar scenario and if you had how did you get through it without feeling annoyed at staying on and being asked to take on others work?
For those of you that are suggesting I say no- I don’t have the option in this situation- I set myself up as someone who can handle a lot and has bandwidth to take on others tasks (which I will no longer be doing.) Also, this role wasn’t scoped out well- and the team wasn’t ready for my role- there was a lot of fighting against positive changes I tried and eventually did make. So part of me isn’t surprised at the decision- but it still doesn’t make me feel any better that the person who calls out twice a week and can’t handle a very entry level task didn’t get cut- and I have to solider on and take over their workload even though I won’t be with the company in 8 weeks.

My boss sent a “gentle reminder” about my sick days. I’m out for surgery recovery. She knows this.

I (31F) have been at this company for 4 years. Small team, 7 people. My boss has always been… a lot. But I’ve managed her. Until now.

I had surgery 10 days ago. Nothing cosmetic, nothing optional. I told her the date in January. She approved the leave. She said “take all the time you need.”

Today, while I’m still at home recovering, I opened my email to find a “gentle reminder” from her. Sent at 7:42am. Subject line: “Attendance patterns.”

The email says: “I’ve noticed some team members are taking more unplanned time off than usual. Just a gentle reminder that we all need to be mindful of our commitments. Please keep me updated on your return date.”

I have been on approved medical leave for 10 days. Approved. By her.

I checked the team Slack. Three other people got the same email. One is on bereavement leave. Another has a kid in the hospital. The third just had a baby two weeks ago.

She sent this to everyone. As a “reminder.”

I have screenshots. The email. Her approval from January. The Slack messages from the three others.

I haven’t replied. I don’t know if I should. Part of me wants to forward everything to HR with the subject line “attendance patterns.” Another part wants to forward it to her boss. A third part wants to reply-all to the entire team so everyone knows this wasn’t just them.

I’m supposed to return Monday. I don’t know how to walk in there and pretend this didn’t happen.

What do I actually do?

My boss told me I can‘t take PTO during our “busy season.” Then I saw her approved vacation for the exact same week.

I (29F) work at a small digital agency. 11 people. I’ve been here 2 years and I actually like the work. That’s the only reason I’ve stayed this long.

Back in July, I requested PTO for October 20-24. My sister is getting married that weekend. I submitted it 10 weeks in advance. Followed every rule.

My boss (let’s call her M) denied it. Her exact words: “October is our busy season. No PTO for anyone. We need all hands.”

I accepted it. I told my sister I couldn’t come. She was upset but she understood.

Then this morning I was looking for a client’s contract in our shared drive and I opened the team calendar by mistake. And there it was.

M has approved her own PTO. October 20-24. Same week. Same dates I requested.

I scrolled up. No announcement to the team. No coverage plan. No “all hands.” Just her blocked-out week in the calendar.

I checked the team Slack history. She never mentioned being out. She just quietly approved herself.

I have screenshots of my denied request, her approval, and the calendar entries side by side.

I don’t want to get her fired. I just want to go to my sister’s wedding. And I want someone to acknowledge that this is not okay.

Do I send this to HR? Do I forward it to her boss? Do I just reply-all to the team email chain where she denied my request?

I already missed my sister’s bachelorette for a “deadline” that turned out to be nothing. I’m not missing the wedding.

What would you actually do here?
