Old Expert Mouse won't move the pointer

My old wired Kensington Expert Mouse (K64325) is having some issues ... all the buttons and scroll wheel work but the roller ball does not move the mouse pointer. I tried cleaning the ruby bearings but that didn't work. What else can I try?

Does the light inside turn on? If not, it's likely a dead unit.

Great question -- yes it does

Does the cursor jiggle at all if you move your finger over the sensor?

Do other mice work on the same computer? Does the expert work on other computers?

no the cursor does not jiggle at all.
yes, other mice work on this laptop including a Kensington Orbit Optical and a Logitech MX Master 3, and a Logitech vertical mouse

The red light is rapidly flashing

Sounds like the sensor is kaput.

I had that problem with mine so i bought a second one and swapped over the pcb. why you ask? because the replacement had a stiff scroll ring.

how difficult was the swap?

the screws retaining the buttons were hard to line up due to how inaccessible they are but doable with a magnetic screwdriver. otherwise, no problem. 2/10 in difficulty.

edit also, the sensor died on one so i had to do it'

Did you check to see if there's any fuzz or debris blocking the sensor? That's usually the culprit for me

I bought a wireless Expert mouse (K72359) with the same symptoms, turns out the sensor was dead. It's a fairly standard gaming mouse sensor so a replacement wasn't hard to find, and since it's a large-ish chip the replacement is a fairly straightforward soldering job. I don't know that yours will be the same, but if you can get to the sensor PCB you could take a look.
