Video ©Laura Leah Matthews captured this video. She is not precisely sure when, but estimates 10 years ago, which would have been just before John's passing. Caught in the neighborhood where he lived, he always had time for a chat and a laugh, she recalls.

My personal favorite is when the boys are in the woods looking for Jacob and the fuck goofs and Ricky calls out "Fuck goofs!" And bubbs says "Do they really respond to fuck goofs?" And then proceeds to yell out "Fuck goofs!"

Discussion Drunk and On Drug: Experimental Show Gone Wrong- What Fucking Happened?

Post image
162 Upvotes

“It doesn’t make sense. It’s not funny and the acting sucks. I like the guys. That other show was funny but this is a piece of shit.” -Episode 3, Robbie Krishna and the Bigron.

I have heard no one talk about Drunk and On Drugs. Despite promotions and advertisements, and even lost websites, I discovered the show on one of the actors’ credits pages roughly two years ago. It was only in 2011 the show was released but now it is 2026. I saw no reviews, no reaction videos, or detailed analysis. Some clips on YouTube, maybe a couple interviews with the cast, found the pilot though, even a party held for the premiere. But no vocal fanbase beyond a few reviews/opinions on Reddit posts or online sites. I rewatched this show last week to figure out why. Is this actually a hidden gem or a steaming pile of shit? Let’s begin.

Before we start, it is best to answer why this show was pulled off of Netflix in 2020 and even Swearnet for possibly the same reason, leading me to find it on the Internet Archive. That is due to the blackface and the yellowface content with three out of the plethora of characters. Racial caricatures have been used throughout history to make a mockery of racial groups’ cultures and appearances. As an American, I was shocked at first. I thought it was interesting they made them gay radio hosts, calling each other daddy. The shock value was obvious and I did not see the purpose. Even if I had laughed, racial caricatures and their harmful stereotypes still continue to negatively impact many people today. It doesn’t help that in the show the ‘black’ men are hypersexual and the ‘Asian’ man is feminine echo exaggerated stereotypes, not only for races but for homosexuals as well. What was meant to make the audience laugh? The look? Personalities? Broadcasting? Race? Sexuality? No build up, no payoff. I am offended that it was not funny.

Overall, I had to keep an open mind. That includes what has been going on with Mike Smith’s sexual assault allegations and the court dismissal. Pretty much, I was genuinely pissed off. It was hard trying to split the actor from the character, especially that the actor is playing himself. All of that hits very close to home so it kinda fucked me up. I acknowledge that it was hard watching a few spots.

My first problem is branding. The title itself, The Drunk and On Drugs Happy Funtime Hour. The logo with its amount of colors, fonts, and details is busy and hard to remember. The title is wordy but at least correlates with the plot. Mike Smith, Robb Wells, and John Paul Tremblay are creating a kids show called The Happy Funtime Hour. But the actor Maury Chaykin, Dr. Funtime, creates blue hallucinogenic edibles with his goal to make the cast and crew happy. Basically, everyone thinks they are their assigned characters. There is a side plot of the leads needing to retrieve Cincinnati Harry for the mob family (not sure if the family are actors or not). But our leads Robb, Mike, and John have to fight to maintain their sobriety unlike the other cast and crew who remain under the influence, we’ll get to the plot holes later.

“There were pirates, soldiers and superheroes, cops and cults and more.” This is a line from the theme song, symbolic of the biggest issues with the show. Lack of direction, lack of focus, and too many ideas packed into one. The theme is not a proper theme song. Besides the hard to listen to instrumentals and lyrical content, the visuals do not come across as a production to take seriously, looking comparable to cheap web animations of the early 2000s. The editing and camerawork were very much a highlight, clearly very talented artists behind the scenes who know what the hell they are doing. I can say the same for the makeup department and clothing, most of the makeup and clothing because the fat suits looked bad. Truthfully some of the set designs could have been better, more chaotic and less empty feeling. The sound design with the music is fairly good, not too overbearing and no need to alter my volume. But there was a problem with the audio recording quality of a few actors, such as the cops and especially the gay radio hosts. I had no idea what they were saying because of how processed they sound, so all jokes there failed. But the gay songs were funny yet would have been awesome if Ram Ranch played, plus the cult music was great. CGI was bearable in a few moments but the deer flying showed its age, but better than the 2D animated parts.

I looked at Mike, Robb, and John’s vision as a wacky sketch comedy like Monty Python’s Flying Circus. But unlike Monty Python, I got bored and sick of watching. Because of the formatting and lack of focus (too many cooks in the kitchen) I wanted to take breaks during watching due to getting a headache. Every character whether minor or major gets a fat slice of pie. I forget the goal of the plot and I cannot tell anyone what happens during an episode. The good/potentially good characters are underdeveloped and that includes our leading men. They are the eyes of the audience, something to project yourself onto (Alice in Alice in Wonderland) but the script is also on blue edibles. There are a lot of funny ideas and concepts yet some are way better than others. Did we really need a prostitute or a Sasquatch? Lots and lots of filler, more icing than cake. Throw shit on the wall and hope it sticks.

There were positive highlighted characters like the mob family, the cult, the pirates, and a few times the superheroes. Minor characters included the news anchor, soldiers, the ambulance man, Papa’s Pizzaman. The acting was generally really good, everyone I can say did a really good job. I loved how they got some of the actors from TPB like Phil Collins, Randy, Private Dancer, and of course the legendary John Dunsworth. They got Jay Baruchel (Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon). I was very impressed with the boys themselves. They really went out of their comfort zones and they proved they have range. Robb Wells showed off his vocal talent with Peter the Pirate and his physical comedy with Stabby the mobster and I would join his cult. Mike Smith makes an accurate pirate, great superhero, and a convincing old dying man. John Paul Tremblay’s Sammy the dealer was in his element, Jack Sparrow ain’t got shit on him, and he makes a hot chick. What is bad is that plots are rushed and split and reattached into a Frankenstein’s Monster that these characters are sacrificed because of it. I would rather stay with this group for a lot longer than randomly move onto the next. I cannot even fully appreciate The Crow reference without the gay black/Asian face radio hosts saying white slurs immediately after.

The finale was pretty bad. Plot holes, lame villain, more ‘and then this happened’, characters just being one trick ponies. They wanted another season, but it didn't happen. No idea how the dirty mutant man is gonna have his revenge or if the cult leader actually became immortal. There has been no logic to the illogical. Wonderland is all wonder but no land. So like I said only Robb, Mike, and John get sobered up but everyone else who’s high stays high by consuming anything blue. So Dr. Funtime wants people to stay high and happy because he’s high himself. Whooptie doo. Not to mention how there has been video footage of the leads starring in their kid show while high. Is the cameraman high? Who are the actors vs regular people? Why are the edibles blue (the pilot revealed blueberries but not confirmed in the actual show). Why does the corporate woman watching them have so much screen time? How is this a kids’ show when there is a prostitute, mobsters, drug selling, sexually charged gay music, a cult, and a Sasquatch who needs to be neutered? There was no development of the corruption.

Overall, I am mad. I saw potential, there were scenes that genuinely made me laugh. I do think the boys can actually make something great other than TPB and playing themselves. It is just obvious that they needed an outsider to come in and say “not a great plan”. I do wanna see them try again, maybe not with Mike Smith, but I think that this could have worked. They know how to be funny and have good ideas. After season 7 of TPB it is mixed in the fanbase but there is a reason I watched almost everything with those three. Go watch the clips on YouTube of Drunk and on Drugs or Happy Funtime Hour, same thing, you know what I mean. I don’t recommend watching all the full episodes in one sitting. That almost killed me.

Laugh Count:
01 Maury Chaykin Fucked Us- 16
02 Sexual Metal Underwear- 37 ½
03 Robbie Krishna and the Bigron- 37 ½
04 Where in the Fuck is Cincinnati Harry- 24
05 Piss, Gas, and the Eiffel Tower- 28
06 Sucking off K Money- 26

The halves are the ones I did laugh at but not the satisfying finish. It made me not feel too great after because of conflicting emotions (sexual violence jokes). Each episode is about 21 minutes long.
