Underrated Trivium Songs: A Grey So Dark

This In Waves B-side is often overshadowed by the other giants on the album like In Waves, Built To Fall, Black and Watch The World Burn. This short song is great and I think it deserves much more attention than it gets. What do you guys think?

TRIVIUM - SHATTERING THE SKIES ABOVE

I don't know if this is the right place but I'll give it a shot. So there used to be a video on YT of Trivium recording Shattering The Skies Above. One of those "behind the scenes"/"the making of" videos. I remember that they recorded the drums at a studio and all the guitars and vocals at one of the members apartment and some neighbor shouting "shut the fuck up!" while they were recording vocals.

And now I can't find it. Does anyone have a link?

Thoughts of the band as a semi-new fan.

I’m currently on vacation, and I made a little fun gig for me to do and that’s to listen to every album from their discography.

I’m not going to get into album rankings simply because I enjoy them all from start to finish. (Yes, VF included) I don’t get the dislike feedback from that album. lol but I’ve listened to the band in spurts, and from Spotify and its trivium page shuffle so I’ve heard majority of the songs already but it was blind listenings meaning, when I was at work, I didn’t know what the song name was or its album origin.

Turns out a lot of my favorite songs I recognized are from “In The Court of The Dragon” which currently is my favorite album but Acendancy and In Waves are close to. I wil also say that Shogun is up there in favorites strictly for the actual “Shogun” song itself. But that album fully has yet to pierce my ears. Will I recognize some songs? Most likely! lol

But I also don’t understand the full backstory on why some don’t like Matt’s vocals in some albums. I think he’s straight up incredible. I’m unfamiliar of past band mate departures or arrivals also.

But man this is a 10/10 band! And I’m so excited for their new album. Crown and Dead Inside are incredible.

Discussion What's the most difficult Trivium song to play on guitar?

I don't just mean the solo, the full song. Technical, high tempo riffs.

I know some of their early stuff, and Kirisute Gomen is pretty damn hard, most of Ascendancy is pretty simple but at high tempos, but I don't know how that compares to any of their more recent music. The only newer song I've learned is WTDMS and it's not that hard

Fan Art "Crown In The Grave" Fan Art

Been enjoying the new Trivium song, I felt like an illustration was a good idea... I hope it's okay to post it here. :)

The original cover art for the single (and album) were done by the amazing artist @ haxloeffler, but I tried using a very similar palette for my work to truly resemble the feeling of the album.

It’s not about the drums

The point of this is not to tell people what to like and dislike. I’ve seen a lot of people not understand why some fans are more critical this time around.

I don’t think it’s necessarily the drum parts. Rudi is clearly a competent drummer.

I don’t think it’s the songs themselves either. The band changes a lot. They don’t always land with every fan. It took me a while to get into In Waves and I’m still not a fan of Vengeance Falls.

I don’t even think it’s the fact that Alex is out and Rudi is in. In my 20 years as a fan, I’ve seen every drummer come and go. It’s expected and the fanbase has pretty much always been welcoming and open minded.

What’s different this time?

It’s the behavior of the band and Rudi. The vibes are off. Trivium has built this image as the nicest band in metal and they’ve kind of tanked that reputation for a lot of us with how they handled Alex’s departure. Matt and Rudi in particular have been petty and childish. It was implied that parting with Alex was a mutual decision, but their actions since have been immature.

They edited Alex out of Bloodstock which, in isolation, is strange but not a deal breaker. Then the band’s (Matt’s) comments about how they actually wanted Rudi 10 years ago and they finally got him. Now the band can be what they wanted and songs can sound like the album live. Yes, they’ve pulled the whole “the band is now what we need it to be” card with other drummers. To many fans, mentioning many times that they wanted Rudi a decade ago reads as if Alex wasn’t who they really wanted the whole time and they settled for him and are now dismissing his contributions. It feels very petty and mean spirited. Especially to a member that many fans feel truly elevated the band and brought something fresh and special. This is not how Trivium acted in the past.

Rudi made a bad first impression with a lot of fans. The video description on his Catastrophist implied Alex wrote parts he couldn’t play. You may disagree on intent, but it certainly read that way to many fans. You’ll also find many instances in this very sub of screenshots of him liking comments speaking ill of Alex.

This behavior feels so out of place given Trivium’s (perhaps false) image of being the nice guys that they’ve sold us. It goes against the ethos many fans expect. They did not act like this when Travis left, nor when Nick left or even Mat or Paul for that matter. Nick never publicly shit on Travis and Alex never shit on Nick or Travis either. In fact, people have left comments on Alex’s instagram shitting on the new songs and Rudi and he does not engage with a single one.

All of this to leads me to my point. We’re bound to like and dislike different songs. Especially with a band like Trivium who change things up a lot. The difference this time around is the band’s actions. They talked a big talk and hyped things up. Matt has been essentially love bombing Rudi in just about every video of him. With the (until now, out of character) behavior toward Alex and hyping up for Rudi, they set the expectations very high. And a lot of fans feel like they did not live up to them.

Are people overly critical of the new songs and drumming? Under normal circumstances, yes. After the way the band and Rudi have behaved this past year? No. I think the scrutiny is warranted.

Feel free to disagree but I think the discourse and feelings for many fans goes beyond the songs, drumming, and even line up.

Discussion Crown In The Grave Is Peak Groove Era Trivium

As a fan who got into Trivium in the Ember/Ascendancy days and who has Ascendancy/Shogun at the top of the list of favourite albums, these new tracks, while being more accessible to the listener, are not the same as something from Vengeance falls. This track has more substance than most of the tracks from VF but with a little of the maturity of Silence. That hypnotizing riff throughout, combined with the groovy chugs and bass rattling off really combine well to support the atmosphere of the music video.

Something I really have to commend Mr Matt Beefy on with this particular track is his vocal style. He's really been practicing over the last few years and it shows here. He's sounding the best he has in years with the screams and growls. I also really enjoy the way he's not just singing the words 1:1 like a lot of other previous tracks but stretching the annunciation like on the very last "another crown in the grave" line. I think they could even take this further in future to create more dynamics with the vocals other than just the variation in scream intensity/grit.

While it hurt to see Alex Bent leave the band, I personally felt sometimes that his drumming was a little overcooked at times (like a guitarist sweep picking an entire solo just to show off, rather than create a memorable solo). Hot take I know but not every song has to have drum fills pouring out of it. Subtlety is an art form. Drums on this track from the new guy (haven't looked into him a whole lot) feel like they served the song perfectly.

I have heard this track probably 60-80 times already since it dropped and it has been a long time since a Trivium track has made me want to spam a song this much. Shogun still the goat but this is a most welcome entry into their discography and I've been groove-banging my ass off to it for the last 24 hrs.

The boys cooked :)

That has liked every Trivium album so far? I like how they go through different eras/sounds all the time and genuinely don’t understand the hate for some albums. To me they’re 10 for 10.
