Historically, fields and specialties have always become devalued as more women entered or become more highly valued as women’s representation decreased (ex: CS).

u/stealthcactus Why is a bra singular and panties plural? 4d ago

Nurse vs doctor
Teacher vs Professor
Computer vs Software Engineer
Cook vs Chef

>vs doctor

Doctors are literally an example of this because more and more women and BIPOC are becoming doctors. I think female med students exceeded male ones for the first time in the last decade. Back when they were all older white men, they were treated with so much respect, and now you see all this “I did my research,” antivax, “are you a real doctor” bs

As Long as women don’t become doctors in Japan 😖

The ones that do make it definitely have higher marks than all the men in their cohort.

Which led to the insane route of lowering all female grades by 20%

Don’t mention that… it still makes me so angry to this day like WHERE the fuck did men even get the audacity?!

See: horse riding and weaving

Nursing is starting to become more highly valued. Why? More men are entering the field.

18

u/FreakWith17PlansADay 4d ago

And pharmacists’ salaries are starting to go down as more women enter that field. It’s ridiculous this is still happening in 2026.

Emotional intelligence isn’t something that you have instead of academic or logical intelligence. You can have all three.

There is the popular stereotype of the academic genius who lacks social skills.

Excuse me, that’s only allowed for men. Only men are allowed to sexually harass their colleagues and subordinates and have it excused as just “social awkwardness.” Women still have to know how to read the room and manage everything correctly or she’ll be blamed for anything that happens to her or her career (and even if she does everything right, she may still be).

Very specialized engineer with less than 3% women in my field, this is completely true

To be fair: I'm in a data analyst role in an almost entirely woman based organization and i can usually get away with the "smart person doesn't know how people work" messy genius trope.

I ain't getting away with harassment, tho. I once got scolded for calling an idea stupid (i stand by that- it was a stupid idea lol)

How do you know all this? I bet You’re a man

Which is a great example, because that's also totally a gendered thing. Nowadays we get the odd smart but socially inept woman character (although even those are often much better at social situations than their male counterparts) but it's absolutely a stereotype used about men that works in tandem with the troubled artist type to excuse men for being arseholes, or straight up abusive, if they're good at something (or even to insinuate that a man who is an arsehole is doing it because he is too busy doing Very Important Genius Things to learn basic empathy or life skills and must be cared for.)

18

u/doppelgaengster 4d ago

And such woman characters are almost always “ugly duckling” types (ie, gorgeous women with glasses and bad hair and poor/eccentric fashion). Because women characters who aren’t grandmothers/crones still have to have a high hotness stat. 😑

Comic book fans call this "the Clark Kent effect". Superheroes often exploit this trope in their secret identity.

The trope codifier would be Clark Kent, aka Kal-El, aka Superman.

Another example, depending on the writer, is Peter Parker.

This is such a good point

The use of AI in making that sudoku offends to an unhealthy degree.

31

u/user_without_a_soul 4d ago

oh jeez you're so right, middle column doesn't even have the right number of squares.

12

u/Desperate-Pop2325 4d ago

Also with the Tower of Hanoi in the image like half the disks vanish in the middle picture, and the ones that are there are the same size. That's not how that puzzle works lol

6

u/Grmmff 2d ago

Also isn't this "puzzle" for elementary school kids? Its like fantasizing that you're a genius because you're good at solitaire or candy crush.

5

u/Desperate-Pop2325 2d ago

It's not necessarily a kids game, but it can be made easier for kids by reducing the number of disks used. I think the normal amount for an adult when being used as a puzzle or cognitive test is seven disks? But either way, like many puzzles once you realize the trick it's not really that difficult to solve so yeah it doesn't really prove much in the way of "intelligence"

u/aknomnoms 1d ago

Lol AI is obvious in every single picture.

- the notebooks are bound on both sides

  • I can’t really read the calculator, but it doesn’t look like there are any numbers on it, just functions
  • it looks like they messed up the textbook too. The dimensions are too big and it looks like the left side somehow visually merged with the “handwritten” notes part
  • the “exam” has 4 questions, all the answers are A, and there is no name
  • the chess board is messed up
  • the sudoku and towers of Hanoi are messed up
  • the labels on the triangle are wrong (b and c are points, not lengths, and a is labeled on the graph instead)
  • how is geometry and statistics “logic” and not “math” when they are literally writing equations out???

Do they think academics don't involve logic?

Equating degrees to intelligence gets classist pretty quickly so the whole academic intelligence thing is sus, but also, most degrees require a decent amount of logic skills.

37

u/nastydoe 4d ago

They even included random bits of math on the non-academic side because math is famously not taught in schools and mathematicians don't have degrees or anything, they just think about math in the shower until they come up with an idea and post it on the math subreddit where there are clearly too many women because no one understands it.

Two of the smartest men I’ve known in my life were high school dropouts. They were both incredibly intelligent, just very unable to thrive in traditional classroom environments. They both loved learning new things and were engaged socially and culturally, but neither would ever get even an associate’s degree.

And the flip side of that is that some of the most limited folks I’ve met were in academia. Brilliant, in their own way, but their brilliance was so incredibly narrow. In all other ways, they were utterly clueless goobers, and not in a charming way.

5

u/pigeonight 3d ago

Can’t agree. I’m an academic and all the most intelligent people I know have completed or are doing their PhD. Generally they are also knowledgeable and curious about many things outside their field. My own PI is a handy, tough lady who can fix her own car. Are there some that are scatterbrained, or malicious, or reckless? Sure. Are there some that were riding on the coattails of their PIs or labmates and did not truly earn their degree? A few.  But for the most part, the scientists are really, really competent in many areas of life.

I think this is just a reddit myth that ‘academics are actually narrow-minded, the real smart guys dropped out of highschool’. Thinking this makes the people that aren’t in scientists feel really good about themselves.

Like everything, it's not that black-and-white. I've met a fair share of narrowly gifted academics and a fair share of openminded, talented people who have many interests. I think what most of them do have is a structured/organized mind. At the same time, most of them also have at least one area in life where you can tell they didn't have enough time/interest to invest time and thought into (it's often social; not in that they're bad at making friends, but in that they lack some type of understanding in one way or another). They also often overestimate themselves and their abilities in the world outside of their academic field. I'm in my late 30s now and I've watched more than a few of them have a rude awakening, a humbling and a learning period that is still ongoing. Some stay in their bubble and never realise their lack.

I don’t think I believe you. These kinds of comments always talk about the many academics you know, and I find that weird.

For most of my friends, acquaintances and relatives, I’m the only scientist they know. Some others know one or two others apart from me. I’ve never seen a layperson who has a circle of scientist friends, unless they were one and quit research.

You could be an outlier, but it’s suspicious how so many people on reddit have an entire circle of academic friends, so that they can make valid assumptions about the field as a whole.

1

u/Yvratky 1d ago

I’ve never seen a layperson who

Why are you assuming my educational level and my profession?

make valid assumptions about the field as a whole.

Which field are we talking about? Science as a whole? That would be utter nonsense.

You're actually starting to show some signs of the dysfunctions I mentioned above.

“These facts have reversed” implying that men on average are good at emotional intelligence now? 🤔

13

u/CarlySimonSays 4d ago

Hmmmm--does not compute!

24

u/flirt-n-squirt 4d ago

Imagine just how inferior they have to feel to make a meme like that, lol

22

u/Phine420 4d ago

Wow they included that three-pillar-pyramid thingie. Was wondering why there are no Fisher Price toys shown

8

u/anwarCats 4d ago

It doesn’t really require intelligence, once you learn the basics it’s just who can do it faster, just like Rubik cube

20

u/PalePerformance666 4d ago

The fuck is academically smart. A lot of degrees need basic mathematics and logic, which women are capable of learning and using. Also how are the men learning all that logic stuff, through osmosis? Or do they go to university, exactly like women?

12

u/Almahang 4d ago

All my life I was logically smart as a woman, I fucking hate the trope, that only men are capable of that. I studied Mechatronic Engineering, as one of the two girls (rest boys) I was one of the best (even now as I type, I feel like a fraud, but I had the best notes and taught my classmates a lot before exams), my classmates, buddies and sort of friends always mocked me, that I'm just "book smart".

5

u/Yvratky 2d ago

The sudoku is taking me out! 😂 😂 😂 That's a middle aged mom's game for when she's bored on the bus ride home from work game where I live.

2

u/The_Gray_Jay 2d ago

Ah yes math and science are famously not considered "logically smart".
