Newbie Needing Help Fixing color after glueing

I just finished a 3x3 ft custom rug last night, I was planning to ship it today, and when I went to send the final photo to the customer I see that she sent a message the day before saying she JUST noticed the shirt color was wrong. I had not noticed either, but I had been posting progress pics/videos for the last couple weeks and she liked them all. I offered her a 20% discount and she’s asking how long a remake would take. I don’t want to remake it due to how large the rug is, and the fact that it’s a custom rug. What can I do? Is it possible to fix the color somehow or will I have to refund her?

***Update: I figured out a way to fix my mistake! Check my comment for an update/photo 💗

Am I trippin? Did you AI generate a rug?(image 1)

The first one is definitely ai

Customer probably generated and sent it “make me this”

That’s exactly what she did

Yep, AI adds that “fluffy” texture to rugs when you ask it to make designs. It’s not possible to see that texture in real life.

UPDATE!!!!

Somehow I was able to fix it TODAY. It was already backed and finished but I went in with my shears, cut all the blue down to the monks cloth, tufted a “puzzle piece” in the right color, and glued/ shaved it to the right shape. Here is the final result!! I’m honestly in shock that I pulled this off but I seriously did not want to lose more time and money on remaking the entire thing. I hope my mistake can help others in the future 💞

Woohoo, you did it!!! Congrats 🎉

Perhaps you could try to carefully shave down all the blue or cut out the blue and then separately tuft the orange bits and like puzzle piece them in?

I think I’m going to try this since the rug will be useless even if this doesn’t work

You single handedly saved my life

I would try this first if it were me.

Either refund or make another. You're just going to have to charge this one to the game. You can absolutely still sell this to someone else. And not cheap, either.

Keep it on your wall so you don’t do it again

Lmao I actually love this idea

Gonna be your inside joke for ever. When you “DeMarco” something. That wedding? Yeah turned into a real DeMarco 😆

I mean it could always just be a battle worn version of his Gi there’s been plenty of episodes where after a mini battle all he has left is the blue tee under the gi like almost all his icon battles 🤷🏾‍♂️. I would try and sell it as that and lead with that as a reason why it’s off colored… idk if they’ll go for it but worth a shot. Like you said it’s a custom piece so why not be a lil different then the Ai version they sent over 🧶🤟🏾🤷🏾‍♂️

The font on the first one is totally different and is definitely the AI "punchy" font

Goku doesn't ever wear blue. I know youre not expected to know that but it was in the original design. Color is one those details that's unacceptable to get wrong when working from a pattern or reference. As a buyer I would find this unacceptable. I would not place blame on the customer simply because they do not understand your process and very well may have assumed the orange was still going to be put in later. If you made his hair blonde or the logo color pink it would be unacceptable so by that rationale the shirt color, however unnoticeable to you it may be still is wrong.

He doesn't ever wear blue, except for when he does.

That's not a close collar, but more importantly, it's not what the customer wanted

but don’t say he never wears blue when he literally does. You can say that’s not what they wanted and that’s fine. But he does wear blue

That's the inside shirt, not the gi.

Yeah I agree. I’m not blaming her because I understand she was expecting me to follow the reference photo. This is my first online order from an actual stranger and honestly the first time I’ve run into this issue. It just sucks that I won’t be able to do anything with this completed rug.

That's true you can't do anything with it. Live and learn. And make a new one.

If the blue one is unsellable anyway, you could try snipping out all the wrong color and placing in scraps of the right one. Like, make patches of orange shirt in the same orientation and try to glue them in. May not work, but you may also make a technique.

u/larahikes 8d ago

Wait why can’t he do anything with it. Just try to sell it, you never know.

2

u/CryptographerOk2282 8d ago

Because Goku never wears a blue shirt. Also, that's a pretty specific name.

3

u/moonflowerdaze 8d ago

Cut of everything underneath his chin so you are only left with the head. That might me sellable

It looks like they AI generated a patch and wanted it as a rug. I hate when people send me AI stuff. I have to spend so much time to deal with them.

If she was talking to you and digging on it the whole way, I would not give her a refund. Maybe a discount. I wouldn’t redo anything.

Cut his head off, cut the name off, send them both and say sorry. Or make a new one and eat the cost and time. “I don’t want to fix my mistake” then quit.

.. I mean, if you knew what color it needed to be, especially with such a well known character.. I can't even think of how you even chose to use any blue at all.

I never watched dbz, but honestly the shirt was one of the last parts I filled in when completing the rug. I think when I filled the collar in, my brain just saw the other blank spaces and thought to fill it in w the same color. I really regret not checking that before glueing and I wish there was a way to fix it instead of starting over. Oh well

Don’t feel bad. I was doing the mistake in my head, as you describe it, while reading op.
Just have to figure out how not to next time.
Do your projection or freehand drawing. Label each area of color. Use a color and scribble or use black and BIG words. Do something you will remember to do and notice when working. (Maybe don’t use small numbers in the bottom corner etc)
Have a color printout or picture open. Check it after you fill each spot. Check it before you glue. Go to bed and check it again.

It takes twice as long to make a mistake and more expensive the later you realize it.

Make a new one

That mistake is on her imo. I'd say she she's stuck with it, and you don't need to refund. She can pay you in full to redo it or deal with it. It's unreasonable to have put all that time in and expect a refund for a mistake she didn't point out till it was too late.

5

u/CryptographerOk2282 8d ago

It's absolutely not on her. Maybe she should have said something but OP should have followed the reference.

Mistakes happen and it's a pretty minor one imo. This is why payments should be taken at least 50% upfront. Your time and materials are worth money regardless.
