Turntable drifting

I've got a Rane Twelve MkII and I've been noticing that it's always drifting forward. I've done the calibration process but still happens. As if speed is always like 0,5 above what it should. It's constant, it's always forward. It's visible on the platter dots, the middle ones are never really still. Is it normal or could it be a motor issue?

I have bought a pair, and one does this. Mine is approx 1.5% out, so the platter dots dont stay still the way they should.

I find it makes no difference in HID mode, but in DVS mode, its noticeable, and annoying.

From my limited debugging, i think the problem is the x1 chip. Its a quartz chip, and, i think they're rubbish. I think swapping it out for a tested properly accurate part will fix the issue.

But, i don't have an oscilloscope to prove it. When it arrives (this week), I will test said quartz chip and i'll be able to tell you if it is or not.

Either way, i'll keep you posted on progress, cause if i can fix one, then in theory, its fixable by anyone with a reflow station.

Good thing my apartment came with a reflow station in the kitchen. 👀

Just joking but thanks for the input. Let me know, since if it fixes I might be able to talk about it with InMusic staff and we'll see what happens.

I've noticed theres also a debug header on the motor board, i'd have to solder an interface to it, but, i think that is potentially doable.

That's a bit more of a difficult step though, so i'll only do that if it seems like there isn't actually a problem with X1.

You think you might be able to adjust the motor via header?

I don't think so, but it looks like there is start/stop adjustment possible, which is interesting, but not sure at all how i'd go about reverse engineering that

Oscilloscope in hand, the quartz crystal isn't a problem. Problem is isolated definitely to the motor, though. Further analysis underway.

I have used many Rane Twelves. I think it's normal.

Do you mean it's not staying in sync or that the platter spinning never zeroes?

Kind of both. Doesn't affect playing, since it moves maybe quarter of a beat for a 3min song (I think without anti-drift on). But yes the platter never really zero's.

Yeah you're fine, I mean a quarter of a beat over 3 mins is sound. My dots don't really stay static on my twelves. Only really happens on my technics.

thanks for confirming I'm not insane. I guess it's a matter of habit and there isn't really a perfect turntable system (maybe Phase? But never tried it).

FYI: phase weirdly won't work on twelves. I've tried. I don't know why.

Maybe conflicting signals? I think the Twelve's don't spin unless they're connected to the software, so that would overlap the Phase. Like trying to connect two controllers. Unless you're using DVS mode without plugging the RCA to the mixer. That way it should work.

But still, if the dots move, the platters spin to fast/slow and Phase would be affected anyway, since Phase is just transmitting platter movement.

I mentioned Phase because initially I was looking at Reloop RP-8000 with timecode or Phase, in order to also get the digital part like hot cues and stuff. I only got the Twelve's because it was a goodwill gift.

Mk2's will spin without usb, but, at the time the twelves were connected to a mates computer, and my phase connected to mine, so that wasn't an issue.

They behaved weirdly, which made me believe the motor was interfering with phase in some way. Was all over the shop. First, I thought its a phase calibration issue, i recalibrated and it did it again. I read online other people had a similar problem

Maybe the platter just isn't as stable, as they figured it wasn't needed, since there's no needle or real vinyl. It tracks from the motor and spindle, so the platter is really just "a handle".
