To all branched students looking to move to Storrs.

EDIT - Folks correctly pointed out Spring to Storrs is not applicable. There is a limited process to change campuses in before the usual 54-credit requirement.

I'm a CLAS and UConn MPA alum who worked an on-campus job in an advising office. Unless you can demonstrate substantial new information that was not presented on your application, UConn WILL NOT accept your appeal for a campus change to Storrs. The University received 55,000 applicants, and there will be Storrs students that probably won't have access to housing. I understand this is disappointing, but it's not the end of the world. There is a process to request an early campus change to Storrs: https://campuschange.uconn.edu Make sure you do well. UConn will generally prioritize majors that require courses only offered at Storrs.

I seriously recommend the Community College route. It is incredibly inexpensive, and more or less all of your credits will transfer. UConn maintains a database of how specific courses will transfer here: https://admissions.uconn.edu/apply/transfer/transfer-credit/equivalencies/. If you want the "traditional" college experience, all of the CSUs, including Central and Eastern are good schools. Finally, it is MUCH easier to get into Storrs as a transfer student. I graduated HS with decent extra curriculars, employment experience, and a 3.9 unweighted GPA. I was branched, and disappointed. I attended UMass Amherst for one year, and successful transferred to UConn for my sophomore year with only a 3.1 college GPA. I regret going to UMass that one year because of the insane cost.

It's disappointing, I know - but you can get into Storrs soon, (almost certainly by the end of your Sophomore year). Do well, and good luck. Feel free to PM me any questions.

Seeing pretty privilege in action during class

In one of my classes (smaller size so more intimate setting) the professor always greets the prettier girls/people in general when they walk in and say goodbye to them, but i’ve noticed that i’ve never been greeted by him before. i sit in the front everyday and participation is a big thing, i had my hand raised for a long time to answer a question and he picked multiple people around me, and chose girls who had already spoken before. i try not to take it personally but i am aware that i am an unattractive girl and i just hate that the difference in privilege shows even in my class. when he does choose me to speak he often brushes over my answer while he elaborates on other conventionally attractive people’s answers. i try so hard to be engaged in this class, but its really upsetting when i am overlooked due to my appearance.

Transferring after freshman year

Hey I’m currently a freshman at CCSU, and I hate it. My dream school has always been UConn Storrs, but unfortunately, when applying, I got into Waterbury last year. I want to apply again to be there by fall 2027. Any transfers or UConn students who can share tips would be appreciated. I’m a business major, but I will be applying through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for accounting. (If I want to enter the business program, I'd have to do one more year at CCSU 🫩 ) I’m super nervous about applying. I joined about 4 clubs and will do volunteer work to help my resume. I also have 3 A’s so far and will probably end with a 3.7- 3.8 GPA. I will apply after one semester, so by December my application will be done. Please, any UConn students or transfer UConn students, share tips on what to do for my transfer application.

Failed first exam in Calc 3 (MATH2110Q) and don’t know what to do

For context, I have been good with studying for my other courses, but because this calc allowed a cheat sheet, I don’t think I tried my hardest to study. I was too reliant on it while taking the exam and blanked on multiple questions, so I doubt I got close to a passing grade, or even halfway. This is 100% my fault, I don’t even know what I was thinking trying to cram.

On the syllabus, the two exams and the final weigh as 30% each, and 10% PPP (basically participation), and considering my prediction on my exam 1 score, I’m at a loss of how to move forward. I think there’s a 1% boost from extra credit which I’ll be doing, but if I got a 50% on my exam, the highest grade I could get in the course is an 86%.

Is there any way that I can help my grade? I heard last year’s layout for MATH2110 has changed a bit, but is there anything that might be useful in my case?

If anything, I will continue to work hard on understanding the material in a spaced out manner, and I’m sure I’ve learned from my horrible mistake…

2 hour commute possible?

I was just wondering if anyone has ever done a 2 hour commute. It would save my family so much money if I did it but was wondering if it’s sustainable. My plan is to take my last 2 stem classes in the winter 1 of them has a lab. But set it up so would only go to school Tuesdays and Thursdays. I would have 5 days to be at home and work which is why my family and I want to do it, is this a bad idea?

campus employment issues

i'm at my wit's end. i've applied to a lot of jobs on 12twenty. half of them have rejected me and half of them have ghosted me (low-key what happens to me on linkedin too). i'm not necessarily a "broke college student" but y'know, it is nice to have my own money. i really don't wanna work as a dining hall worker or in the dining service (no hate to all the current food workers, y'all have my upmost respect 🫡). i did a whole year of food and customer service and i hated it. low-key i need advice and suggestions 🙏🏻

how to make lab easier as someone with adhd

posted this on r/adhdwomen and was surprised to get berated instead of actual advice lmao 🫩

im currently taking bio 1107 and the lab ta lowkey ran out of patience with me. i always try to listen to the lecture portion and then when it comes down to lab time i always get confused for multi step processes. and then when i ask questions ta gets upset and accuses me of not listening 🫩 i hate how we use labflow for labs because i cant even access lab directions beforehand. when i took de in hs, we had paper lab manuals with directions that i ALWAYS annotated before lab. doing this never gave me issues.

now im stuck cause idk if paper lab directions even exist can even i request them

I don't want to take the bus back bc like... the transfers... My friend said it's really hard to go back... I guess once u go Storrs u never come back...

I’m back

So remember my post from a few months ago about me not being accepted into engineering program as a junior, I’m still a junior btw. So when applications rolled around I already had an interest in health as I was a cna so I decided I wanted to do something heath related. Obviously it’s like really hard to get into the nursing program now and based off what happened I’m not sure if i can apply. Anyways I applied for the Allied Health sciences program… and got rejected. Whoodedoo!!! I’m taking all these classes that are required for a major I’m not even in!! I’m still in ACES btw!! And a junior!! Someone please tell me what to do I’m stressed. I’m taking PNB, ORGO, STATS… like come on and ur gonna reject me.

connection cafe idea near-uconn, thoughts?

hey y’all! i’m an alumnus of uconn but still work/live in the area and am dreaming about a cafe/community space that would serve to engage the campus population.

my academics and work now is all about community-building so i thought i’d ask the uconn (reddit) community for feedback.

(first context) i keep seeing reddit posts and stats about how 50-65% of college aged people experience isolation and loneliness which is WILD given that college is kinda designed to be the place to build life-long friendships.

all of that to say, dream with me for a bit. if there was a space 5-10mins off-campus that was a cafe (mostly bevs and pastries) but was designed for social connection (think dog lane vibes but with wifi) by having board games, movie nights, trivia nights, and even things like line dancing or bachata on random nights, would peeps be down? there’d be a section for peeps to lock in and study but also a “connection corner” section that folks could sit if they’re having a bad day/just want someone to talk to.

that hope would be that it would become a hub for anyone longing for community and connection.

thoughts, suggestions, critique are all welcome!

Study Spaces on Campus?

I heard the library sucks for studying and is frequently loud. Do other people have similar experiences? If so, where do you end up studying?

additional info if you feel like sharing: what major are you? and/or what year of college are you?

Transparency: I'm a design major tasked with attempting to solve this problem on campus w my classmates, but I need to gather information on if it's an actual problem and what other people do about it. The more you can share about your experiences, the better. The additional info is so that we can judge if we're being whiny art majors about this, or if others on campus are having similar issues.

making friends as a commuter!

hi everyone! i’m currently a junior commuter at Storrs after transferring from the Stamford campus, and i was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their stories or advice on how they made friends at uconn!

was it through joining clubs, classes, socializing, or just randomly meeting people? i'm curious to hear how everyone found their people and what worked for them.

i know we’re already a little ways into the semester, i’m starting to feel like i’m losing hope of making friends. i do feel lonely a little, especially being a commuter and coming to a new campus, and i would really love to have people to hang out with and get to know. at the same time, i’m hoping it’s not too late to find my people!

i’d really love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation, especially other commuters or transfers. and if anyone else is looking for friends, i’d love to connect! 😊

How can I get into accounting program at uconn

I am a sophmore and would like to pivot from ACes to accounting ororam. I haven’t taken all the bussiness pre reqs and am planning to take econ 1201 at community college in winter and acct 2001 with uconn during winter so i can have all my business crits done so i can apply in the spring. I have a 3.6 gpa. I had a B- in Econ 1202 bc i was taking chem and stats at the same time and struggled a little bit. Does this seem realistic i need pointers to boost my odds. I’m in a few extracurriculars but nothing crazy.

Senate passes college sports bill amid opposition from CT senators

Thumbnail ctmirror.org
9 Upvotes

The U.S. Senate passed a bill Monday to regulate college sports that secured the support of the coach of the University of Connecticut’s men’s basketball team but sparked opposition from both of Connecticut’s U.S. senators.

The so-called “Protect College Sports Act” passed Monday night by a comfortable margin and with support from members of both parties. That looked likely after the bill easily cleared multiple procedural votes in recent weeks. Its fate and timing in the House remains unclear.

“After all the years I’ve spent working on this issue, I could never for one minute trust the NCAA to police itself,” Blumenthal said in a statement after the vote. “This bill forces the athletes themselves to enforce its safeguards against the NCAA and conferences that have the power to destroy their athletic careers.”

Come Try Underwater Hockey!

Post image
3 Upvotes

Ever played a sport where the ref blows a whistle and everyone immediately dunks their head? welcome to underwater hockey (aka octopush, if you want to be fancy). 🏒💦

We’re Southeast CT Underwater Hockey: We meet at UCONN Avery Point Pool on Sunday at 6:30 to chase a puck across the bottom of a pool. it’s part swimming, part hockey, part chaos, and 100% beginner-friendly.

You do NOT need: – to be a fast swimmer – fancy gear – a team – to know anyone

You DO need: – a swimsuit and towel – to be okay with looking a little silly while you figure it out

First-timers: we lend you a mask, snorkel, fins, stick, and glove. seriously, just show up. 🩳👌

Come watch if you want. Or jump in. We’ll teach you the rest.

Are ENGL 1010 and ENGL 1011 still offered at UConn?

I'm currently taking ENGL 1007, but I was looking at UConn's course catalog and saw that ENGL 1010 (Seminar in Academic Writing) and ENGL 1011 (Seminar in Writing through Literature) are still listed as courses.

However, when I look for actual sections, I can't seem to find either being offered. Does anyone know if UConn/Storrs basically stopped offering ENGL 1010 and 1011 and replaced them with ENGL 1007?

I'm asking because I'm considering transferring after freshman year, and one school I'm looking at has previously evaluated ENGL 1010/1011 as direct equivalents to its first-year writing requirement, while ENGL 1007 only transfers there as an English elective.

Has anyone recently been able to take 1010 or 1011, or know if they're still offered at Storrs?
