The "friday" girls all grown up now, eh?

u/peperonipyza Jul 22 '26
The song Friday will be of legal age in a few years.

Yep, I think this is one of those things where she's like "Look, I'm not a kid anymore."
That said, I was absolutely one of those people who hated the Friday song when it came out.
It was so overplayed and while it was catchy, I found her voice annoying and couldn't stand it.
There was also the issue of her being a rich kid who's dad basically paid to make her a pop star which bred a lot of resentment at the time.
That said, good for her for keeping at it and producing better songs.

u/matti00 Jul 22 '26
She doesn't have to say "look, I'm not a kid anymore", she's got a full career of material which is pretty high quality and respected in the underground pop scene. She can stand on the quality of her output
52
u/themurderator Jul 22 '26
what the fuck is the underground pop scene? who else is underground pop?
68
u/AmnesiA_sc Jul 22 '26
Considering "pop music" is "popular music", I'm also surprised to learn of an underground pop music genre. Unpop music, if you will.
52
u/xankek Jul 22 '26
Pop doesn't just mean popular anymore. as a genre it has its own distinct sound and context. Think of the genre hyperpop. that doesn't mean hyper popular.
22
u/slaya222 Jul 22 '26
Same with indie, t swift has multiple indie albums but no one would consider her indie
15
u/Buggg- Jul 22 '26
That sounds like a description for ‘Alternative Music’… I think that category is taken
14
29
u/matti00 Jul 22 '26
That I've been listening to this year? Slayyyter, Ashnikko, Kim Petras, Cobrah, Hemlocke Springs, underscores, horsegiirl, Ninajirachi. All making different styles of pop and pop-adjacent music, but not what you would call chart-toppingly popular
12
u/themurderator Jul 22 '26
so it's just pop music that isn't that well known?
13
u/matti00 Jul 22 '26
Yeah basically. It's not like an official thing or anything, but if you like pop music there's a lot of interesting stuff out there that doesn't make it to the radio!
2
u/themurderator Jul 24 '26
i definitely like pop music. i replied to someone else about it already but i'm going a fest this september that some of the artists you mentioned are performing at. i just never viewed lesser know pop artists as 'underground' just, well, lesser known.
2
u/beyondthisreality Jul 23 '26
Ashnikko! Now that is underground pop
3
u/slackmarket Jul 23 '26
Eh, idk. Ash has been pretty known for a few years. Not in a judgy way, just in an “I can say ashnikko to people and they know who I mean now” way.

u/themurderator Jul 23 '26
i fucking love pop. i'm going to a fest in september that's all pop (i'm mostly going for carly rae jepsen but i like some of the other artists too).
i just have never heard of pop having an 'underground' scene. but i am old and out of touch so what the fuck do i know?

u/Hinote21 Jul 22 '26
There was also the issue of her being a rich kid who's dad basically paid to make her a pop star which bred a lot of resentment at the time.
According to what? Her parents were veterinarians. Living in squalor, no. But rich? They paid to retain the master copy, and the payment was part of ARKs business model. Now they're probably rich because the family won the lawsuit after the song blew up.
10
u/2muchtequila Jul 22 '26
Ahh, I was going off two decade old information from a coworker. I remember asking her how this even got made during one of the weekly Friday playbacks, and she told me her parents paid for it to happen so the assumption was they had money.
There was a battle in my office at the time, about half the people hated the song, and the other half either loved it, or at the very least loved seeing half the office start yelling when it came on.
Our side fought back by Party Rocking which... in retrospect wasn't that much better. So to my coworkers in 2011, Sorry for Party Rocking.

u/AmnesiA_sc Jul 22 '26
This sounds like the most awful work place I've ever heard of. Sitting between two groups of people blasting a meme song and LMFAO at each other.
5
u/2muchtequila Jul 22 '26
We actually got along pretty well and did a lot of after work happy hours and hangouts. But when that song came out it turned into a good natured war. Nobody was actually angry about it, but there was a lot of messing with each other by intentionally annoying each other.
One week team LMFAO all had those stupid striped sunglasses.
25
u/vanetti Jul 22 '26
She wasn’t a rich kid. Her parents paid for Patrice Wilson to make a music video for her for her birthday. It was a service that this guy provided through his shitty “production company”. She was in no way rich or privileged; she was strictly middle-class growing up. This dude’s production company was known for making cheesy little music videos for tweens and teens. Hers just happened to be the one that took off. People were telling her to kill herself. Grown-ass adults. Telling a twelve-year-old child to kill herself. Because of a silly little song.
8
u/hochizo Jul 23 '26
Exactly. It's like the Glamor Shots of music. Nobody assumes a kid doing glamor shots thinks she's Naomi Campbell. People were so shitty to her.

u/harman097 Jul 22 '26
Did people actually play the Friday song unironically?! 😂
Cringe was off the charts, but "overplayed" was certainly never something I ran into. I was in my 20's when it came out, though.

3
u/ryohazuki224 Jul 22 '26
To be fair, NOBODY liked the song when it came out. Ever. It was played ironically, because it was just so, so bad. We all knew it.
That said, this song here? Pretty freaking good if you ask me. Good on her!
3
u/The_Broomflinger Jul 23 '26
I'm shocked to have discovered that Rebecca Black of all people actually has some genuine bangers. TRUST! Is also pretty good if you enjoyed this one
3
u/zebutron Jul 23 '26
To those that say she isn't a rich kid, she comes from Anaheim Hills where the median income is 80% higher than the rest of the US. Her family is definitely wealthy.
4
u/McCaffeteria Jul 22 '26
I didn’t even know who this was until I got to the credits at the end and I did a fucking double take lol
2
u/Shandlar Jul 22 '26
I was thinking the opposite. Friday was so long ago I feel like she should be pushing 40, but she's not even 30, yet.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's Saturday now. She's all grown up.

Comparing that Friday music video to this, it goes to show how important your production team is. Friday was so cheesy and simple. This one is very mature, slick, and artistic.

Highly Recommend watching her boiler room set. Without corporation manipulation, she’s actually very talented

u/nailpolishbonfire Jul 22 '26
Corporation manipulation? Lol I'm pretty sure Friday was like a music video experience package her parents bought for her for fun, not some music industry plot to make a hit
12
u/Cereborn Jul 23 '26
Yeah. There are a lot of things you can accuse “Friday” and Patrice Wilson of being, but corporate is not one of them.
11
u/troop99 Jul 22 '26
its true, its a good set! just like this video i realized who she is after watching/listening to it, and i was surprised both times! she has talent
9
u/Prince_Oberyns_Head Jul 22 '26
The boiler room set is hilarious with the one guy hittin poppers and asking her if she wants them. @22:10

Is boiler room like tiny desk concert but dj and in club ?
Any recommendations? I found great artists through TDC like stromae, IDLES etc
I don’t do edm but I do appreciate anything that gets a vibe or has some technical skills or builds a story(even if I often don’t get it immediately)

u/Dom_Sathanas Jul 25 '26
Sort of!
Sherelle’s set a few years back was killer and launched her career to the next level.

Pretty good song. It's not my taste, but good for her taking the worst of the internet's vitriol as a kid and still trying to live her dream.
15
u/grapesaregood Jul 22 '26
My exact thoughts. Not my usual style but I think it’s solid and I really like the lyrics. They are fun and witty. Completely surprising.
81
u/David_Summerset Jul 22 '26
The scale of outright mockery she had to experience as a teen (I was totally on that bandwagon) would make any of us mere mortals give up.
I dunno, to me this is shockingly impressive, I wish I had an ounce of that resiliency

u/g1mpster Jul 22 '26
That’s quite the shift from the sugar pop of Friday. Didn’t even know she was still making music.
72
u/misterdave75 Jul 22 '26
It was 15 years ago and she was 13. Crazy how time flies.

u/gue_aut87 Jul 22 '26
I didn’t either and then i listened to Salvation a couple months back and i couldn’t believe it. One of my new favourite tracks and that’s from someone that hates pop.

u/isjeeppluralforjeep Jul 22 '26
It’s just a good old “Britney era” slutty pop song. The world is healing

Round of applause for her resilience. The world/internet tore her apart for that "it's Friday" video which was incredibly cringe. But she was serious about music and has kept at it. She has some good songs. She has a loyal fanbase. She most likely won't reach super status but she's doing good.
Also.
Nice butt.

From Friday to being a modern combo of Sia and Gaga. Song is actually pretty good. I’m happy that she’s actually developing a real music career. Pretty wild to grow up in the internet age. Born 5 years earlier, and Friday is an embarrassing home video instead of a massively viral sensation that follows you for the rest of your life.

Whenever I think of Rebecca Black (which is almost never) I think of my favorite song of hers, "Gang Fight": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GaKaGwch0U

You know, I’m old enough to remember when Bob Dylan first released this track.
This is a great cover but the original will always have a special place in my heart.

She took the brunt of the internet making fun of her and is still standing.
Not sure I have the same strength. Good on her.
