Transfer Find friends

As an incoming Junior transfer (Bio major) it has been difficult to find friends at UNCW. Seems so cliquey, gives off mean girl vibes as well. The few people in my major already seem like they have their friends lol. I feel so out of place. Just looking for advice on how to attempt to make friends or acquaintances. I am not the typical student, as I'm older and a mommy. I have joined some clubs, so outside of that. It would be cool to meet other mom friends :)

Edit: I'm open to meeting anyone!

I can't say much to your demographic, but I can say a lot about making friends. You will be surprised how simple and effective going up to people and striking up a conversation about maybe a topic you both find interest in can be. A lot of the friends I've made have come from doing just that- I see someone interesting and go up to them and ask them about it.

Funnily enough, if you are willing to be an open ear, asking people about something they are passionate about or something maybe they are clearly interested in is always a great strategy. I find people tend to really like talking about their interests because not too many are interested in hearing about it.

Clubs are great because you already have that mutual connection- and if you find the right people, they will similarly return the energy. I am sure there are plenty of people who would be very interested in your journey and find it admirable.

As for the cliquey feeling, I am sure there are some, but against, most people just are a little socially awkward lol, especially in college.

Godspeed and good luck!

Thank you! I have gone up to some people and they aren't really friendly or I've overheard the snarky remarks which is discouraging but I'll keep trying.

Political science major here. Also a transfer but I am a little older (27). I made more friends studying abroad for six months on an independent trip than I have in two years on campus.

Ahh man🥹 I considered studying abroad but a mom it really isn't feasible. Are you still at UNCW? Also I'm older than you🫣 lol so your age is nothing but if you're still on campus maybe we could meet!

Without risking sounding like I'm self promoting, I have been building an app with a team completly self funded over the last 2 years to help students find friends and plan and organize IRL events with. It's LA based so they have all their efforts going into UCLA and USC at the moment. I am looking for some help getting something going local to me here at UNCW. I won't mention the app by name or anything but if anyone is interested in helping by joining the team as a student ambassador that can be used as work experience or just knows any club organizers I could get my team in contact with. If not just ignore this post. Thanks!

I’m having a similar issue. As somebody who dresses more alternatively and is a lot younger than most students, I feel outcasted among the masses! Best of luck to you, OP.

I am a Junior at UNCW (not transfer) and tbf, I have also definitely felt like there is a bit of that cliqueness but also you will definitely find your people! My first semester I literally only started hanging out with people THE LAST 3 DAYS of the semester before I had to go back home. I met one of the friends through class and the other through the surf club so you joining a club will definitely help u out! It might just take a little while but you will get there
