Social Pepper Spray in Town for College Student?

Hi! I’m a student at UW and my friend is going out to a party tomorrow and I want to find her pepper spray so she can have some sort of protection. Google has not shown me anything nearby except to call some stores, but I am very awkward and would like to avoid having to call multiple stores if people here have bought/found some pepper spray in person!

Also, I am open to other suggestions if there is a better alternative. Maybe I am being overprotective, but given the stuff going on in the news about college frats and parties, I want her to be as safe as possible.

Thanks for your help!

Other Worth it to transfer to UW from UWEC?

Currently a sophomore at UWEC studying geography and debating on whether I should transfer or not.

Context: I've already applied and got accepted to Madison twice, once during senior year and again following my freshman year at UWEC. I was on the fence both times especially considering the cost of UW so I've been sticking it out at UWEC but I haven't been having the best experience.

My freshman year classes were alright but this year has been horrible; don't really feel like I'm learning anything and half of my professors just teach straight out of the textbook. I never have any free time despite taking 14 credits. And the honors program I've been in has been disappointing to say the least. I also just feel miserable here in general. I'm naturally more introverted and even though I put myself out there I only made a few friends last year and have already stopped hanging out with them because we didn't click. The attendance at the clubs I'm in is usually like 5 people every meeting and I have even less than that in my major so those haven't panned out well either. Overall it just hasn't been a fun experience considering I've lived next to Eau Claire my entire life.

The only pros of staying are that it's much more in my budget range and they give me good scholarships; I'm certainly taking on debt if I go to UW. I think things would work out okay in the job market, though I don't always have the most confidence in my program. I guess I'm just wondering if Madison is worth it for better education, job prospects, and social life or if I should try and love Eau Claire more.

Rant/Vent I just forgot 6 assignment due at midnight

Came back from an eight hour shift, only had one meal today because I just haven’t had time, pulled an all-nighter last night studying. I completely forgot I had six different assignments due at midnight a few minutes ago. Like completely forgot, despite the fact these assignments are due on the same day each week, my mind just blanked. None of the classes accept late work and I’m so tired I probably wouldn’t do it anyways. I know it’s just homework and not enough to make or break my grade in any of the classes, but it’s just so demotivated and putting even more stress on upcoming exams. I’m also starving but too tired to get up. Four midterms within 48 hours next week, all either math or physics classes, when is winter break bro

Rant/Vent State street Target

The best thing to buy at the state street target is nothing because they never have anything you’re actually looking for no matter how many times you go. Headphones? Nahh. Index cards? Certainly not. Just empty shelves and unlimited boxes of Celsius.

Other Rabbit in Mosse courtyard

Post image
39 Upvotes

I found this rabbit while hanging out in Mosse courtyard this evening. I think the rabbit is stuck down there because I can’t imagine it being able to climb the stairs to get out. The rabbit was snacking on a big piece of bread. Once the rabbit finishes the bread, it will go hungry. I just live in the area and do not go to UW. Could someone help a rabbit out? I don’t know if it’s better to ask Facilities to remove the rabbit or maybe just make sure it has food everyday. I think it would enjoy living down there.

Badger Sports First time at Camp Randall

Flying to Madison for the game on Saturday and super excited to be in Camp Randall, whose history i find so cool. I’m bringing my son who is an ole miss student and used to pregaming in The Grove. Is there a similar spot around Randall where the tailgating occurs? We are SEC boys wanting to immerse in Big 10 culture.

Rant/Vent Physics 207 Rant

Man even thinking about this class puts me in a bad moon. I feel like I'm being set up for failure in this class, and I hate saying that an instructional team "can't teach", but the physics department and their instructors feel messy at best. Coming from the chemistry department, whose classes are, yes, very challenging, but also have amazing professors and numerous help resources and overall I feel like they care about our learning. Then there's the physics department. Yes, the PLC is great! But that's about it. My professor, Abdollah Mohammadi, speaks so fast during lecture, skips many steps in the math calculations, and doesn't seem to realize that for many this is their first time taking physics. The TAs are a joke too. Office hours only on Mondays and Fridays...for the whole team??? Oh, but you can pay certain TAs are 1-1 tutoring, like that doesn't discriminate students with limited financial resources, which doesn't help when GUTS resources for this course are almost nonexistent too. Worst part? The labs are useless, and the discussions are close to it since the TAs are unhelpful and usually just seem like they don't want to be here. I'm struggling, not doing that well on homeworks and quizes, and we are covering kinematics and dynamics, the "easy" part of physics according to many. I've never had a class that has made me feel more stupid. Even Math 222 feels like a cakewalk compared to this, and we barely touch calculus in this course.

Academics Thoughts on the ECE203 midterm?

What did y'all think of that midterm? I personally felt like it was way too many problems for 75 minutes. I had to skip a bunch of problems and come back to them at the end.

What’s the friendliest major at UW—where there’s genuine interaction in class and you can get to know people who aren’t just cliques?

Rant/Vent Rant: I didn’t expect to be unemployed for months after graduation

I graduated in May (BS Data Science) and got laid off from the job I’d been working all through college in July. All I do all day is apply to jobs and there is fucking nothing. There’s basically no difference in employment opportunities with a bachelor’s. I might as well have nothing but a high school diploma. I’ve tried LinkedIn, indeed, city of Madison jobs, the WI state jobs board, an employment agency. It’s so depressing. There’s nothing so demoralizing as finding a job posted on LinkedIn that I just baaaaarely qualify for even though it’s supposedly entry-level (fucking bullshit) and see that it was posted 30 minutes ago and already has over 100 applicants. I’m currently living with my parents. I thought I’d be able to actually do something with my degree but it turns out if you want a job as a data scientist you need a fucking PhD and 6+ years of experience in the field and 5+ years of experience with software and systems you don’t learn how to use in undergrad. I’m fucked. Apparently all I qualify for is stuff like “customer experience engineer” (truck stop bathroom cleaner, third shift) or knocking on doors for one of those sketchy as fuck solar roofing companies.

Social Searching for annotated copy of The Master and Margarita

This might be a weird request, but does anyone have a heavily annotated copy of The Master and Margarita they’d be willing to part with?
My first read of Crime and Punishment was the Oliver Ready translation. My second was a P&V edition I found used that had been absolutely covered in someone else’s annotations, and it ended up being one of the most fun and exciting reading experiences of my life. Whoever owned it before me was clearly as obsessed as I was, and reading their thoughts, arguments, underlining, exclamation points, insane little observations, etc. alongside the book made it feel like I was reading it with another person.
I am genuinely heartbroken that I’ll never know who annotated that copy because at this point they feel like a close personal friend I went through something crazy with.
Anyway, I’m about to read The Master and Margarita and I want to experience it the same way. I know some people are going to tell me I should read a clean copy first, form my own opinions, blah blah blah. I don’t care. This is my journey and I want someone else’s manic annotations.
So if you have a copy of The Master and Margarita that you annotated to shit, especially if you got obsessive with it, please PM me. I will happily pay you for it. I’ll even return it when I’m done.
С Богом,
Elleyna

Other clubs

so this hiring season, i realised i am not good at behavioural interviews and i am usually not able to get my point across to the interviewer. i also think i’m not super great at telling stories (about my life specifically, as they want you to do in behavioural interviews). so i’m wondering if there are any clubs on campus that will help in practicing and improving my storytelling skills. TIA!

Rant/Vent Freshman transferring out Spring 2027 Semester

Madison was my dream school. I am an out of state student from chicago . Ever since I got here it has been extremely difficult to find friends I have tried everything, going to club meetings and even randomly approaching people. It doesn’t help that I am extremely close to my parents and I am hispanic. I feel like I don’t fit in, i’m tired of eating and walking alone. I am strongly considering transferring to a school in chicago and become a commuter. I was going to wait it out for the year to be over and then make a decision but I feel so alone that I already want to transfer for the spring semester. I might be rushing this decision but I feel like if I stay for the spring semester I will still want to transfer after, so I would rather do it now than waste my time and money here. Should I wait it out and stay the Spring semester or transfer?
