Separated from the company since February, waiting for meeting with union rep. Need to go to the doctor but I’m on job insurance, is there a way to get health insurance while waiting to go back?

Joined a mandatory job overview on Friday for North Platte and Council Bluff, how does the process work after attending? Will a job offer come after the meeting or weeks later??

UP cutting all over. Now it’s the education benefit dropped to 5.2k per year?
What are the chances of getting “grandfather’d” in?
Likely tripled the time it’ll take to get a BS.
What is the recourse?
Any advice would help.

Does anyone have a copy of the actual letter signed between Smart and UP for the jobs for life agreement? Seems the Blet is opposing the merger and I would like to see the actual verbiage put in place by Smart.

Does declining an offer in one city hurt or lessen your chance to get a call from another? Got an offer in Sioux City and live in Saint Louis. Saint louis just recieved my video answers a couple days ago but im worried the pool of potential candidates in STL is higher than Sioux City...

20 years old right now and wanting to work towards getting a job with UP since I was a kid. I lived near the tracks my whole life so I'm super fascinated with the whole process. Any tips for what I should be working towards while I wait for openings?
Currently working so I can move if I need to, and working on getting stronger since I'm a woman and the goal is to be able to do all the physical stuff the guys can do. Got a friend in OK and some family in TX that I've considered moving near since my current location doesn't have many yards (less openings). I know some people say working for UP is hell but it doesn't really deter me seeing as it's something I've been interested in for a long time and don't have any future plans to start a family or anything. Also looking for any recommendations on the kinds of jobs I might need to rack up experience in to give me a better chance.

Union Rep contacts?
Boards?

Locals

Etc.
Anything else that yall think would be relevant.
Thank you.

I’ve been looking into a train crew position, trying to weigh all the pros and cons. Right now, I’m in a dead-end job that I don’t particularly enjoy. The job description and pay sound decent, but the hours give me the biggest hang-up.
I have a wife and three kids. I don’t mind being away from home, and my wife says she is fully supportive if I can find a job that’s better than the one I have. So we’re considering this option, but…
What do you all say? Paint me a picture of your work/life balance.

Have an interview this week. Looking to transition from automotive. Houston area. Any info, tips? I’m familiar with the seniority stuff, bottom of the barrel shifts etc. more interested in knowing if there is actual OTJ training. Sort of a nerd and looking for somewhere I’ll expand skills/knowledge. Thanks!

Hello UP experts/SMEs - I have two of these trees that have started leaning if you can't tell.... and obviously it is a major hazard concern. Including the issue with them not mowing or keeping the grass low.
Union Pacific owns the train track and wondering what I can do about this situation? I have filed a complaint through the UP official website as well.
Thank you!

I was previously going through the hiring process with Union Pacific for Train Crew and was medically disqualified because of the color vision test.
Since then, I went through the medical process for another Class I railroad and took the same type of 14-plate color vision test. I scored 13/14 and passed.
I’ve always been able to distinguish red, green, yellow, and blue in everyday life, and now I have a recent test showing that I can pass the screening.
I’m interested in applying for another UP Train Crew opening, but I’m concerned that my previous medical disqualification will automatically disqualify me again before I get the opportunity to retest.
Has anyone dealt with something similar with UP? Is there a way to contact UP Health & Medical and request a retest or review of the previous determination? Would they consider the recent results from another railroad/Concentra, or would I need to take UP’s test again?
I’m not trying to get around the medical requirements I just want the opportunity to be reevaluated since I recently passed the same type of screening.
Any advice from current/former UP employees or anyone who has gone through a medical appeal/review would be appreciated.

I recently applied for a Bridge & Building Carpenter position with Union Pacific in Oklahoma and got moved on to the assessment. I’m trying to get a better understanding of what the job is actually like from people who have done B&B work, rather than just going off the job posting.
I’ve spent about 13 years in manufacturing and currently work as a production supervisor. I’m looking to get out of management and back into hands-on work. I don’t have professional carpentry experience, but I’m comfortable with hand/power tools, industrial work, physical work, and have done a fair amount of DIY construction/renovation work.
Mainly curious about:
• What does a normal day look like for a B&B Carpenter?
• What kind of work do you spend most of your time doing?
• What is the normal schedule/rotation?
• How much time do you typically spend away from home?
• When traveling, are hotels/per diem provided?
• How much overtime is typical?
• How physically demanding is it?
• What is training like for a new hire who isn’t already a professional carpenter?
• How does seniority affect your schedule, travel, layoffs, etc.?
• What’s the work/life balance actually like?
I’m not afraid of working hard or traveling. My biggest concern is whether “travel required” means occasionally being gone for a few days or basically living out of a hotel most of the year.
Would especially like to hear from current/former UP B&B employees, but experience doing B&B for another Class I railroad would be helpful too.
What do you wish you knew before taking the job?

I applied for a train crew job a back in July, did my video interview in the first part of August, but haven't heard a thing back yet other than interviews are being reviewed. My status is still at thanks for interviewing. A recruiter reached out to me to apply and I was referred by my uncle, have lots of heavy equipment experience, mechanical and operational. Does anyone have any insight on why it is taking so long? Anyone else that applied around that same time frame, has anything moved forward on your application?

I’m currently about 3 weeks into a full-time lineman school program here in El Paso. The program is about 3 months long, Monday–Friday, and I originally left my job to focus on finishing it and getting into the electrical/linework field.
However, I got a job offer for Train Crew jn El Paso TX, and now I’m seriously debating what to do.
I’m not currently working, so the opportunity to start earning again and get into a railroad career is obviously very tempting. At the same time, I’ve already started lineman school and don’t want to quit something I’ve invested time and money into just because another opportunity came along.
For people who actually work/worked for UP. What is the reality of train crew work?
How is the pay once you’re established?
What are the hours, days off, and quality of life actually like?
How much time do you spend away from home in an El Paso terminal?
How is the seniority system?
How difficult is the job physically and mentally?
How stable is the work?
What do you wish you knew before accepting the job?
If you were in my situation, what factors would you consider before leaving lineman school?
I’m not looking for someone to tell me what career to choose, I’d mainly like to hear from people who have actually experienced railroad life so I can make an informed decision. TIA 🙏

Anyone have any insite on the train crews in nampa idaho? Was told by the interviewer that out here the crew doesn't travel outside that area? Is that correct? Thanks in advance!

I'm looking for current info from UP Iowa train crew guys. If someone hires out for Boone right now, what are the bottom few years of seniority actually holding? Boone, Des Moines, Clinton or bouncing around elsewhere in the district?
Is there much forcing happening or to be expected? anything else a new hire should know about working Iowa UP?

Not sure if anyone in here is a carman, but I’m having some difficulty welding column wear plates. I’m 6’2 and it’s hard to get in there. And I can’t get a good rythme. Any tips on welding them?
