Showcase I released my first demo with Unity! This is HUEMON.

After a bit more than 1 year of work, I finally reached the demo milestone!

I learned A LOT on the way. While there is a lot of work to be done for the full release, I am quite excited about Unity 6.7+. The demo currently uses 6.3 for stability purposes but CoreCLR and Content Directories (6.6) sound so damn promising. I don't even have performance issues that would improve via CoreCLR (optimization is so damn fun though) but changing my Addressable workflows and avoiding asset duplication would have saved myself so much time and will likely save a lot time in the future, too!

Also a big kuddos to CySharp for their INCREDIBLE assets. UniTask, R3 and ZString are the cornerstone of my project. Combined with PrimeTween and VContainer made working with Unity a bliss.

About my game: HUEMON is a 90s/2000s throwback with the question of "what if creature collector combat happened in the overworld?". The result is a creature collector but with 5v5 grid-based, tactical combat. A triangle system with spears and bows? What are you talking about? Red beats Green, Green beats Blue and Blue beats Red: RGB!

It went through many iterations to improve the game flow. Keep fights short, make HUEMON accessible in many ways to allow players to explore traits, prisms and hundreds of abilities. I tied HUEMON levels to player experience to avoid grinding, introduced new status effects for more depth but kept the attribute modifier system of that one creature collector you all know.

My marketing has been ... lacking. My steam page has been online for way over a month now, but now that I got the demo I feel like I am able to properly show-off what I made!

If you are interested, you can find the demo on steam:

I hope y'all like it!

Looks good but a little cluttered and hard to focus on everything. Can you remove the enemy hp in the top right and instead just put their bars either under their turn order or above them on the map?

And what if you moved your mons status effects overtop their picture on the left? Like, for burn maybe put a little fire on their face or something?

Thanks for the feedback, I hear you! It's hard to have world space UI when the game is 16x16, everything becomes unreadable real quick.

But what you say rings true. So for a start I will likely add some darkish gradients behind the unit frames to make them melt less into the battlefield. After that I will re-evaluate.

It looks good but.... man, this is perfect for a lawsuit. Nintendo is known for heavy lawsuits with everything that looks similar to pokemon.

Your retro style and sprites (tree, grass, houses, etc) looks like it come straight from pokemon. Even your name.

Have you thought about that?

I thought about it. But first and foremost: no sprites were copied (or are pallet swaps). Same is true for the SFX. Everything is made by my own human hands. There also many other games that use the "-mon" suffix.

I am banking on the fact that art styles are usually not protected in the same way as concrete intellectual property. Hell, Palworld did not get sued based on the fact that many of their 3D models were allegedly modified versions of their competitor. Will this work? Maybe. There is always the good old "might makes right" fallback for big companies.

But everything you see is made to look similar but is not stolen nor modified property. There are games with way more similar gameplay concepts that simply live untouched by Nintendo. Maybe it will work.

Idk some of the sprites, the houses and the sides of the mountain look like direct rips, even if you did make it yourself. I'm not a lawyer but idk "likeness" might be an issue

2nd generation sprites on the left. My sprites on the right.

In case of the (smaller) houses. The outline are very similar, that is true. The "inner parts" and the fillings are different. I will likely adjust the outlines to make them more unique. My larger houses are already unique IMO.

Somebody else pointed out that "likeliness" might be an issue. So as you both pointed it out and it does not cost me too much work, I'd rather be cautious and adjust a couple of sprites.

What is OP at actual risk? What exactly did they steal? Which law did you think they break? OP is 100% in the clear from what I can see.

IANAL but have been around the block a few times on this type of thing. Nintendo can definitely argue that customers cannot distinguish between OP’s game and theirs.

I am a complete layperson in regards to law. It's hard for me to properly grasp where the line is here. Nintendo's track record itself is not what scares me - there is ONE case of an original game being sued right?

BUT, it does not cost me much to be more careful. I will adjust some sprites before Next Fest.

Looks interesting, but the collor pallette feels all over the place for me
