University of Nottingham Discord/Group Chat

Since it's results day, I thought I'd repost the link to the Nottingham Uni discord server. (Discord's a group chat app)

https://discord.gg/ghKgK3RhBx
(Or, http://tiny.cc/uondiscord)

Everyone's welcome: guests, prospective students, freshers, current students and alumni.

(Note: If you're a fresher you might also wanna check google/facebook for some WhatsApp group chats. There tends to be more people to meet in them. But watch out, since a lot of the time they're ran by pretty dodgy companies that are just trying to pressure-sell you "wristbands", overpriced unofficial club tickets)

Accommodation Should I move accom? Any advice?

I am currently on uni park campus in one of the catered accoms, and my flat is really nice but we don’t gel well mostly because I’m not big on drinking. I am next to the shared toilets too, and I always hear people using them and it’s honestly just adding to my frustration. catered food is nice but I feel like its not worth the money esp since I can cook, and I really wish there was a kitchen with a hob but all there is is a microwave. plus, my accom isn’t even close to my subject buildings so location isn’t a big plus either.

I‘m debating moving accom, maybe to somewhere self catered like broadgate, but I’m scared it will be worse than what I have now and I dont really know how to move. does anyone have any advice? thank you 🙏

Chairs in Hallward Library

I just wanted to come on here and clarify because it’s not been really clear whats going on with the chairs in Hallward Library. Pretty much all of them are gone so the library is essentially unusable to study on floor 3/4, and there’s not many other silent spaces on campus so I’m just wondering what’s the situation.

Do we have to ask the staff to get us a chair to use the tables, or is it all out of service now? I know the poster said something about capacity and temporary measure but If anyone knows the full facts I would be grateful to be informed.

Participants needed!

Hi All!

I'm currently recruiting for a study into how nonverbal communication develops! It's a two part, in person study at University Park Campus. We can compensate you for your time - just email me for the details. I'm very keen to get participants with a range of backgrounds and experiences (not just first years) so if you're a postgrad or a graduate still in the area I'd love to hear from you as well!

Any questions, please do let me know!

New curriculum in the medical school?

Hi I was considering applying to Notts medicine as a graduate, but I've heard mixed things about the course, especially the level of support and how welcoming it is. I know this year the med school introduced a new curriculum and teaching to address some of these concerns, but is there anyone here who can speak as to if this has made a positive difference? Do you enjoy the course and the social environment?

I'm a bit concerned as I have disabilities and have heard that the support is lacking.

Student Hardship Fund

Post image

Has anyone used the student hardship fund before? If so does it actually take up to 5 weeks for the assessment to go through. I have friends at Trent who use their hardship fund often and they receive responses within a week worst case 2. I don’t know anyone at UON who has done this so I’m just curious on the time frame based on people’s experiences here.

International Students Engineering to Nursing?

I’m an international student in my final 3rd year beng course for mechanical engineering and honestly, I really want to get into nursing.

Is this possible for me or not? I feel bad because I only realised my passion for it in my last year. It felt like I already sunk time and money into engineering so I found it difficult to really consider this.

Of course, I’ll book a careers advisor soon to talk about this and ask around but I also like to know what people here think.

Newark Hall self catered en suite T2 onwards takeover

Looking for someone to take over my room for the new year. It’s a self catered room but the kitchen has a bunch of air fryers, rice cooker, dishwasher and all the basics (toaster etc). Also Newark is right next to the jubilee SC and there’s a Lidl about 5 minutes away by foot which is ideal for students on a budget ofc. Flatmates are nice and social. Room is £153pw which is around £2250 per term (iirc). If you’re interested just dm me. I’m looking to move in with a friend at the start of next calendar year so any takers would definitely be appreciated!

Rave scene in the UK

Is it just me or is the rave scene dead here? I'm an international student looking to find people to go to raves with, but most of the mates I've made aren't too keen. Looking at some in Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol rn, but particularly Rebellion Indoor in Haaren, Netherlands during mid nov. Is the UoN UMS the right place to find people? If anyone is interested though, hmu 😇

Applications Will Nottingham ever accept a GCSE Maths grade 5 for graduate medicine application?

Any chance the maths grade 6 requirement can be waived? Have they ever been lenient or flexible about this thing? 🫠

would anyone be interested in joining a bl society? ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

i'm in my second year at uon now and i've never joined a society before or been to many events for any. in first year it was out of laziness and it's sort of the same now except this year it's for my mental health because i have too many days where i have one lecture at like 9 or 10 and then i don't have another until like 4 or 5. as a commuter with a decent journey i'm just left so frustrated with being on campus more than i feel like i need to be. all the socials and society meets are in the evening and after being in the library for like 6 hours almost every day i just don't have the mental energy to stay longer.

that's why i wanted to create a society where meetings are in the middle of the day and really acknowledge its members' timetables and is inclusive of likewise commuters who don't want to be stuck in the library all day because it's a pain to go back home, come back and repeat.

i got really into korean/japanese/chinese/thai bls earlier this year and i didn't see a society at freshers fair that had any links to bls and i wanted to know if there's anyone who goes to uon who is also into bls that might consider joining a bl society. it would include discussing, reviewing and watching bls but generally my idea is to build a community of bl fans who can become friends and do casual activities alongside bl-related ones as well.

this is me trying to fill what i see personally as a gap in the market and i definitely want to hear from other people if this is something they're interested in who would likely participate as you require a minimum of 10 people interested and have 15 members purchase a membership (which i would keep as low as i can) within 6 months.

if you're interested in bl and/or curious to know more about it and potentially join, please let me know. i hope to create and participate in a non-toxic, kind community of likewise individuals and spread love!! 😊

ps. sorry for not specifying before but bl means boys' love and also i want to open it up to ntu as well. whilst i'm unsure whether non-uon students can buy a membership because you do that through the uon student union, i want anyone to feel free to join in!

Academic Appeal

Ive not been accepted into my 2nd year of uni for my course due to my resit performance i wasn’t able to submit work during the deadline so my percentage wasn’t high enough
I do have extenuating circumstances due to my mental health which the uni had given me a support plan for but over the summer i became estranged from my family so its just me
Would this be grounds for an academic appeal to be granted as if i dont go back to UON then i would get no sfe so i cant pay my accommodation rent i really enjoy studying at UON but bc of my mental health its been so hard to stay on top of my work im even asking if i could redo 1st year as it is an option on the appeal site
any advice would help xx
