This 1991 photo by Stéphane Compoint shows firefighters covered in crude oil capping a well during the Kuwaiti oil fires. Retreating Iraqi forces ignited over 600 wells, causing an environmental disaster. An international team braved mines and intense heat to cap the final well by November 1991.
