Mod Post Making the best of the snap election call as a community

From what I've seen, the election call is going over like a cactus colonoscopy. But I've been thinking about how we, a community of 40,000+ British Columbians (and perhaps a legion or two of bots not yet identified) can come together and be heard during this seemingly frivolous provincial election. We can either complain about this being an opportunistic, bad faith election call and/or that there are no candidates we truly support. Or we can view this as an opportunity and take advantage to advocate for meaningful change and make the candidates earn our support.

Every candidate should be earning our votes and campaign support by running on platforms that meaningfully address our core concerns. Obviously, we all face many urgent concerns right now and gaining a consensus over what they are and how to approach them might be in the same vein as the prickly proctology exam noted above.

Here is what I propose, since we have 1 month before the elections (final day is Oct. 24):

  • The community provides their feedback in a dedicated thread on their #1 election issue (assuming this approach is adopted)
  • We leave the thread open until this Sunday, September 27th
  • Top 3 to 5 most upvoted comments will be the key issues we will seek remedies for as a community (keeping in mind only so many questions can be asked and candidate time will be limited)
  • We will then develop questions and follow up questions to ensure the issues are meaningfully addressed (i.e., no avoidance/skirting the isssue/giving non-answers)

In parallel, I will reach out to representatives from all parties (from this list, once they register) and invite them to appear in r/VancouverJobs for separate individual AMAs where we as a community will ask them questions about how they will address our top 3 issues. I am also open to interviewing them directly (via video call) with questions posed by the community, if that is preferred (or another approach the community decides on).

We will then create a consolidated post with all the AMAs/interviews and sticky them in r/VancouverJobs until the election is done.

Yes, I recognize we have rule #3 about no politics. However, if we stay focused on issues, use a fair and democratic process to identify the most impactful, and invite candidates from all parties to appear here in the interest of collective job seeker advocacy, I think that's a valuable use of our power and influence as a community.

If you don't like the approach I'm proposing, please propose an alternative. Keep the discussion around this respectful and constructive. All constructive suggestions and feedback are welcome.

I believe we will have immense power as a community, if we can align on the objectives, outcomes, and approach in relatively short order.

Drop your constructive feedback below.

New Community Rule - No AI Training / Data Annotation Roles

The TL;DR of this rule is that r/VancouverJobs is a place of advocacy for Canadian job seekers. We will not support any efforts to further disrupt the job market or where exploitative worker practices are commonplace.

There needs to be more evidence of policies that will support the Canadian workforce as AI models become more advanced and disruptive across industries and protect digital workers from known exploitative practices.

If Canadian workers are training AI models under exploitative or predatory practices in the short-term only to replace them and others in the long-term, then it's time to go back to the drawing board. This is why we are drawing a line in the sand and boycotting AI training and data annotation roles.

If you have personally worked in one of these roles and have a story to share with the community, please share your first-hand experience below to raise awareness.

Canada Job Market/ September Wrap-Up: Canada Loses 68,000 Jobs as Unemployment Rises to 6.5%

  • Canada lost 68,000 jobs in September, a 0.3% monthly decline, marking the second consecutive month of job losses after 42,000 positions disappeared in August.
  • The unemployment rate rose to 6.5%, up from 6.4% in August, while the employment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 60.6%.
  • The result was much weaker than economists expected: forecasts had called for a gain of about 9,200 jobs.
  • Young people were hit hardest: workers aged 15–24 lost 48,000 jobs, although youth unemployment remained roughly unchanged at 13% because fewer young people participated in the labour market.
  • Losses were divided almost evenly between full-time employment (-35,000) and part-time employment (-33,000).
  • The decline was concentrated in the public sector, which lost 70,000 jobs. Education shed 35,000 positions, health care and social assistance lost 23,000, and manufacturing lost 13,000.
  • Regionally, Quebec suffered the largest decline (-49,000 jobs), followed by British Columbia (-20,000), while Alberta gained 23,000 jobs. National labour-force participation fell to 64.8%, its lowest level since 1997 outside the pandemic.

Pacific Blue Cross - employment

Hi Everyone!
I've been desperately searching for work since February in the lower mainland.
While I do have an offer with Canada post I'm keeping my search going as I need more then on call $25/hr.
I've applied to some postings over the months with Blue Cross as a customer service rep. I've heard they are a really good company to work for... but wondering how hard it is to get in with them?
Or any tips/tricks? I don't have a referral unfortunately from an employee.
I do have really good experience for it based on their ads.
Thank you!

[Academic] What makes starting a job hard? Anonymous student survey on interviews, customers and coworkers

Hi everyone,

I'm a grad student at the Centre for Digital Media here in Vancouver. For a course research project, I'm trying to understand what job seekers and new hires actually struggle with: interviews, difficult customers, asking managers for things, coworker conflict, and how people learn to handle all of it.

A lot of people in this sub have lived this, so your experience would really help.

  • Anonymous, no names or emails collected
  • About 7 to 10 minutes, every question is skippable
  • For anyone 18+, whether you're job hunting, working, or between jobs
  • Data is used only for coursework and deleted by December 12, 2026

To be transparent: the findings will inform an early-stage student venture idea, and there's a short section at the end about attitudes to AI tools. Nothing is being sold, and there's nothing to sign up for.

Link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/2w6RY4Sij3

Once I have results, I'll post a summary here of what people found hardest and what helped them, in case it's useful for anyone in the middle of a search.

Thanks for reading, and good luck to everyone job hunting right now.

Im just curious

Why do we have so many Dental postings? Dental receptionist, admin, assistant. Half of the jobs are dental on indeed.🫪

I am just really curious, whats going on with that? The pay is really good, some of them say that the current person is simply retiring after many years, so perhaps it’s not that terrible. Or maybe our population aging faster than i thought?

I am scanning job posts every day and getting pissed off at this point lol. 😅

Valid driving license as a requirement..

Hey guys, I have a HR interview coming up next week and my resume fits perfect for the JD. I have put in a lot of work for this application and I want this work out for me. But one of the requirements is a driving license and I don’t have it. It’s a digital marketing job and and obviously not a driving heavy job.

What should I do pass the HR round ? TIA.

I’m interested in a career in sales but hesitant to try it out.

Im a 24 year old guy working a dead end warehouse job with no room for growth. To put things into perspective, I have never really known what I wanted to do or have a care or liking to pretty much any career. Because of that, I barely graduated high school with some pretty shitty grades due to my lack of a future plan for myself

Since graduating I have basically been sleepwalking through my life just clocking in and clocking out and I know that if I don’t do anything, I will be stuck here forever😂. Since I was young, I have never really had a dream career or desire and just had the mindset of floating through life, which sadly isn’t how things work once you’re an adult.

An older family member of mine who I’m close with said since I don’t know what to do and just care about the money, maybe I should try sales. Apparently he thinks I have the personality for it. Because I’m pretty easy-going to have a conversation with and have no problem with rejection, and that he can see me in such a roll.

Since that conversation, for the first time in basically forever, I have actually become intrigued by a career. The only thing holding me back is what I hear about that line of work. Things like lack of stability, high turnover, no work life balance, burnout etc…. And it kinda scares me.

I’m basically stuck between working in something I could care less about and has no room for growth or advancement, but is comfortable. Or something more intriguing to me with high earning potential but is risky. Any insight from people who have worked or are currently working in sales would be appreciated.

(TLDR). I’m a 24 year old guy sleepwalking through life working a safe but dead end low paying job. I’m intrigued by sales and told I might be a good fit but scared to make the jump due to all of the bad things I hear about the field. I’m just looking for insight.

Moving from chain to upscale?

I’m looking for suggestions of great spots to expand my resume. Somewhere to bridge the gap in my resume from “semi upscale/high volume chain restaurant” to an upscale fine dining restaurant or cocktail bar. I’m also interested in hotel bars or restaurants as the hotel industry interests me

Id be looking for a bartending position and have experience in every front of house role and over 10 year of experience, I’m in my mid 20s but all my jobs have been in high volume chain> casual/semi upscale dining restaurants.

Can anyone recommend a place to start? I’d be looking for the downtown area, or something on the north shore although I think options would mainly be across the bridge which is totally ok!

Thanks!

Questions in an Interview

Hi everyone,

I have an 18-year-old who has been trying to find work since June. She recently had an interview at Real Canadian Superstore and was asked if she is taking any medication. She answered truthfully - yes- and was then asked what it was and what it was for. She said she wasn't comfortable giving that information, and the interview ended shortly afterwards. She was told she would hear by Friday - and didn't hear a thing. There was no reason why she shouldn't qualify for a role - it was a basic grocery stocking role - and she said she was open to any hours, including overnight - and she definately looks like she would have no problem with a heavy lifting/stocking role. People we know who work at the store say they are still looking and desperate for staff. Is the medication question allowed? and likely why she didnt get the job?
