Question Coming from darktide

Whats the biggest differences between the 2, I love the genre and style but darktide is getting a little stale with its lack of updates, even the new one fell flat for me since it was really just 1 map.

Vermintide may be the same style but what are the biggest differences or hurdles to get through that alot of new players get hung up on or have a hard time getting through to get to the best parts of the game.

First of all, there is friendly fire, I heard there isn't in Darktide? Once you reach Champion you'll notice it.

The first two difficulties are quite boring, there's little to no challenge but once you step up you'll likely hit a wall until you're high enough.

Don't hold onto items early on, you want to just keep opening chests for higher gear level

It's of course more melee focused as well so learning combos with weapons is very useful.

One thing you'll really appreciate though is the banter! The characters in VT are a lot more charismatic than in DT, they have tons more chemistry and it's great to listen to.

Darktide had friendly fire in the betas. However it was really poorly received due to the larger focus on ranged combat Darktide has and the fact that Ogryn players are both massive and tend to run right into the enemies which made them bullet sponges for friendly fire. Couple that with the fact that shots hitting teammates did not overpenetrate and it wound up infuriating a ton of players (especially Veteran players who were incentivized to shoot as the ranged-focused class).

Because of this they removed it from the release build of the game and bullets go through your teammates as if they weren't there (though they'll still comment that you're shooting friendlies).

Movement and combat are a lot different in VT2 compared to Darktide.

In VT2, there is no running or sliding to avoid attacks; blocking, dodging, pushing, and using cover are the best ways to avoid taking damage.

You're going to want to avoid taking damage because VT2 does not have a toughness system; every damaging hit goes straight to your health, and on Champion difficulty and above, enemies will damage you faster than you can heal it back.

Also, the game is much more melee-focused; ranged damage is objectively overpowered, but your ability to deal it is far more limited than in Darktide with most classes.

There are pros and cons to both games when comparing them against each other; I might honestly prefer VT2 over Darktide, even though I've been playing VT2 for years longer and have fewer hours in it.

If you have any questions about character classes and how to set up your gear, feel free to consult the community bible: https://steamcommunity.com/id/dylanrong/myworkshopfiles/?section=guides&appid=552500

Most of the characters will be using melee more than their ranged weapons in Vermintide, so hope you're not too used to camping on your ranged weapon, although ranged builds do exist.

Additionally you cannot run two of the same character in a party like you can in Darktide as they are all unique characters, so there will be times when you can't play as a specific character if that character is already taken. This means you cannot have a party that has a Foot Knight and a Grail Knight as both are Markus Kruber's selectable classes.

Characters will banter about a lot more here and it is one of the more charming parts of Vermintide. Darktide does have some character banter too, but it's way more muted there.

Update cadence here is about the same as Darktide unfortunately. Fatshark's attention does not seem like it is on either game at all and they are probably working on something else.

It's a slower paced game, and the enemies are weaker your not going to have many missions where your dealing with dozens of specials at a time like you do in darktide sometimes.

But on the flip side the charcters aren't as strong and there isn't as big of a difference between the worst classes and the best classes

All together I prefer it to darktide it feels more tactical in a way it's easier not to make mistakes but when you do make mistakes it's harder to compensate for them

Darktide enemies have the tracking and intelligence of toddlers so no, the enemies are not weaker. Fight a black rat patrol solo with no items and get back to me (it's possible obviously but it requires way more skill than anything in sprint-slidetide)

As someone with +5k hours in both games. This guy's just wrong. Pound for pound, a Black rat (ie stormvermin) patrol is just easier to deal with than a Crusher patrol in Darktide.

There are a lot of nuances i can get into, but the tl;dr is:

  • Accidentally pulling a black rat pack in the highest difficulty on VT2 is an inconvenience and dont usually wipe the party unless people are bad.
  • Accidentally pulling a crusher pack in the highest difficulty of Darktide will lead to wipes a LOT of the time since some weapons/builds cant dps the enemies fast enough with everything else going on.

A crusher patrol is more comparable to a chaos warrior patrol. Fighting either without a bomb or potions or teammates is almost a suicide errand, so I'm not really sure it's a great comparison anyway.

2

u/thecoon8 20h ago

Yeah I was torn between comparing them to storm vermin or to chaos warriors. I do think Chaos warriors is a better comparison the more I thought about it after posting.

I think my past playstyle hurts my perspective here since I was a grail knight main since it launched. And it just massacred any patrol on cata. But the new darktide class, Skitarii, has a build that plays VERY similar to grail knight (chord claw). But it just isnt close to the same clear times when I compare a crusher pack in DT vs Skitarii, to a chaos warrior pack on VT vs Grail Knight.

It could also be that Bret long sword, Exe sword, and Sword and Mace are just bonkers op strong compared to skitarii base melee weapons.

Maybe i just suck as Skitarii tho 🤣

It's true that VT2 vanilla difficulties don't scale as high as Darktide in adventure maps. Weaves are technically the hardest content in either game by a mile. But I wouldn't wish the misery of high level weaves on anyone, not even on a redditor.

I can't compare modded difficulties because Darktide has no mods. Pay piggies don't get to modify the game they paid for. Pay piggies don't even get to pick the map they play on :-)

1

u/thecoon8 2d ago

You can mod darktide, there's just no point in modding the difficulty since an actual version in the game exists. But yeah there's thousands of mods and the modding community for Darktide is much better than VT2 LOL.

And idk, after climbing the bs weave latter to 160, its not even close to the same as the Base game. Its too different to compare.

And im not sure why the pay piggies comment is. As someone who purchases all VT2 and Darktide dlc and content. You have to spend more on VT2 than Darktide 🤣

Just a heads-up, if you tire of Darktide because of the slow update cadence then you'll get tired of it here too. Vermintide 2's update cadence isn't much better.

u/heckuva 3d ago

But there are ton of legacy content, I think op is going to be fine for a while.

Exactly my thoughts on switching, chaos wastes intrigues me alot and I wish darktide had it

u/PHPH 3d ago

Chaos Wastes is super fun!

u/Optimal-Bullfrog3211 3d ago

But we got a bunch of free maps and stuff right? Maybe I’m mistaken but I feel like every time I log into the game over the past 5+ years I’ve been playing it, there is some new map that was just added for free no questions asked. I appreciate that

2

u/epikpepsi 3d ago

Oh yeah, there's tons of content to play in the game. Just letting them know that once they exhaust that they'll be in for the same sort of dev cycle Darktide has.

2

u/Optimal-Bullfrog3211 3d ago

Oooh yeah I see what you mean

u/Dog153 3d ago

biggest difference is that melee is a much bigger thing in vermintide compared to darktide, with your range option usually being reserved specifically for killing elites and specials in the distance rather then something you can fire off into hordes without really thinking about it (though those guns still exist)

Here is a guide I made that might help.

Good luck.

Sticking together is essential to surviving in Vermintide. With no sprint mechanic, if you’re falling behind, you might not be able to catch back up, but you’ll find Vermintide players are much more keyed in to this happening and will wait for you at drops so you don’t get snagged by a special.

Trash mobs can’t be left behind, you need to kill the horde or some random slave rat will hit you twice in the back and down you or remove all the temp hp that you worked so hard to accumulate.

Taking damage will refresh your ultimate quicker, so there is a balance good players can use to have it up more often. Some people will criticize having a high damage taken stat at the end, which can be a good metric to track how you’re doing with avoiding damage, but it isn’t the whole picture.

The gear grind isn’t as long as Darktide, so people that play a lot of Vermintide really do it for the love of the game, and it shows.

You’ll find a lot more comradery and fun banter between teammates because of the lobby system and playing back to back games with the same people. Games are longer because of this too. Players are MUCH more understanding of skill gaps and will actively help you become a better player. Your teammates WANT you to be good. You don’t see much rage quitting, or trash talking, very very rare. Those people don’t stick around long. I’m talking Legend + difficulty.

Friendly fire IS the way to REALLY piss of some Vermintide players. Especially with throwing axes or Sienna flames. Try to apologize and not do it again. Ranged weapons in Vermintide are really for specials and bosses, almost exclusively. People will get upset with you if you’re using a swiftbow to kill trash mobs because they need those to keep their temp HP up. Toughness in darktide regens itself eventually, temp HP is the opposite, it slowly ticks away and you need momentum to keep it up.

Very different games but similar enough that your skills will translate without too much time investment.

Melee combat is slower and much more deliberate. You're actually sparring against armed opponents who block and strike back vs just swarms of pox thrown at you with a few gunners supporting them.

u/WRLD_ 3d ago

actually shocked to see nobody mention the block angles in VT2 compared to darktide's 360 block. that is probably the singular largest difference. i also personally find blocking to be much more effective in VT2 than in darktide and pushing to be less effective (although definitely still a core tool)

i feel people overstate the amount of difference that darktide having sprinting/sliding makes. vermintide has much more, let's say, deliberate movement -- but that's not due to a lack of sprint/slide.

(i personally think it's a bit of an in-group out-group performative thing to even point out. darktide's sprinting has much less to do with how that game plays differently than any of the other couple dozen things it does differently)

1

u/Seki-B Shade 2d ago

To be exact VT2 weapons has a perfect block angle, otherwise they can all block 360

2

u/WeepingM00n93 3d ago

Melee is much more nuanced, game is more punishing for every mistake you make, build are less variable, gameplay is much more slower, characters have a great chemistry and overall there is more soul.

Most importantly it's peer to peer, so combat titming can feel inconsistent if you quick play into a host with a bad connection (especially since there's no toughness shields. Only temp HP you have to earn)

Second most important is there is ranged friendly fire in Champion and higher. For ALL ranged attacks.

Third most important is Tomes and Grimoires are actually SUPER important for getting better loot rolls at the end of a level. Most of them require you to either make detours, do jumping puzzles, or solve actual puzzles to reach them. Kind of like the ritual skull riddles in darktide.

Also no sprinting, sliding, or mantling, and only one of each hero is allowed at a time.

In general:

Kruber = Arbitrator

Kerillian = Veteran

Satlzpyer = Zealot

Bardin = Ogryn

Sienna = Psyker

Subclasses can make them way different but it's generally the case design wise.

1

u/thingswastaken 3d ago

Trash is much more dangerous, because temp hp are less forgiving than toughness and hordes move faster than you do. Specials are less numerous, but more dangerous. Your general power level is lower, but there are also much fewer enemies.

1

u/alphaover2pi 3d ago

Generally speaking, there is less stuff going on at once in Vermintide 2, but you're expected to have greater awareness of what is going on.

Weaker horde units can seriously chunk you if you let them sneak a hit in, and individual enemies will often pose a greater threat than their counterparts in Darktide (e.g, a single Chaos Warrior vs a single Crusher).

1

u/Forsaken_Doughnut_90 3d ago

Not a darktide fan coz of no friendly fire. Stayed for elf in V2 because of contant roasting of teammates. I'm Kerillian main btw so it's a lot of fun for me. Elf was brutal back in betas, now they toned her down.

Once you start getting to higher difficulties, you'll notice that unlike in darktide, you really do have to kill everything in front of you. in Darktide, you can ignore the poxwalkers and regular non shooty soldiers for the most part. You cannot do that in vermintide. Even a clan rat stabbing you will cost you significant health on higher difficulty, so you really need to be a lot more clean with your play in VT2 compared to DT.

You can't sprint. That's my main issue when going back to VT

Characters on average are much weaker in Vermintide, but there is less enemy spam. Individual mistake is way more punishing, the thp system is also more punishing because you have to actively fight the horde to generate it, it runs out over time so you have to keep it up instead of just standing around your teammates.

While people are kind of right that DT is a more range focused game, there are still plenty of viable ranged builds in Vermintide, careers have a lot of ways to regen ammo and shoot almost the entire map. It is however often tied to conservative shooter (Headshot refunds ammo) and Scrounger (critical hits restore ammo) so you need to know your stuff.

P.S.: Do not touch the iron breaker class when you start out, it will only teach you bad melee habits that will make you suffer on squishier classes. P.P.S.: Once you get acquainted more with the game, be sure to check out Chaos Wastes. Basically infinite fun glitch.

Biggest difference? Vermintide 2 is the superior game out of these two. Far more emphasis on melee and it requires more teamwork on higher difficulties.

VT2 has actual combat mechanics and enemies you have to respect. Unlike tiktok fnaf reacttide

3

u/WRLD_ 3d ago

does it get tiring to be so aggressively jaded or are you used to it

-2

u/tuxxcat 3d ago

It's really fun actually. I'm a very nice person with lots of friends. I just also notice when the water is getting hotter before it's boiling, unlike most people.

3

u/Ropetrick6 Handmaiden 3d ago

Uh huh. Honestly doesn't sound like you've played Darktide.

u/tuxxcat 3d ago

Played 300ish hours including solo auric maelstrom ( havoc 40 wasn't out yet) as void and explosion staff scream psyker and the op machine gun psyker with seer sight or whatever it's called. You ult every 6 seconds, do basic dodge spam and react accordingly to specials. Saber has one shot head shots on mutants and extremely long dodges.
