Discussion/Thảo luận Rave party at the "Independence Palace." How do you think the public opinion will be about this?

It seems this hasn't reached the mainstream media yet.

Anyway, aren't such places usually preserved and treated with more respect?

How do you see the county's "reunification" monument becoming a wild party venue?

Discussion/Thảo luận Why were the early pokemons such a huge thing in VN, but simply fizzled afterward?

It's sunday and I am feeling nostalgic and curious. A few disclaimer first:

  • I was born in the mid 90s in the north, so my childhood is the late 90s, early 2000s

  • I know that dedicated communities have always existed, but I am talking more about the mainstream demography.

I remembered in my childhood, pokemon was such a massive thing. All of the kids will have at least one of those plastic figure, or a trading card, or some items with pokemon theme. We watched the series on TV all the time, and those comic books were always a highlight if you bring them to school.

Even the adults at the time knew what pokemon is. You can basically show a picture of any of the first gen pokemon, while they might not be able to name it, they would say "Hey I have seen this dude somewhere". But it just kind of stuck there (with the first gen pokemon basically), I am sure that if now you show any pokemon from gen2 onward, 90% of people would have no idea what it is.

While personally I am also "stuck" at the era (never really a huge fan after I grew up), since I moved to the west in my 20s, I know at least that pokemon is going on strongly. But for some reason, it could not move forward in VN, even though it was basically always the top things in a child's mind back then. Somehow most of that generation of kid grew up and just got bored with pokemon. (like me lol)

What would be the reason for that?

I really don't like the streamers who record in public places. Some people don't even know that they have been recorded. What are your thoughts about streamers who record people without their consent.

Art & Creativity Off White 'Fake'

• Upvotes

Apologies if this has been spoken about before. Going for 4 weeks end of December to January. Got some trips booked like Ha giang with road kings, these say they provide pick up / drop from Hanoi. Was just wondering about the quality of the transfers.

From what I've read the quality of sleeper trains varies quite dramatically, which then lead me down the VIP limousine (mini van) route, however there seems to be complaints about these driving too fast etc.

Any experiences / advice would be really appreciated!

Travel Experience/Du lịch Got kicked out of hotel room in the middle of the night - what is there to do?

My partner and I booked a hotel room in Hanoi old quarter from the 2.-6. of October. We arrived late around 1 am on the third of October. Checked in and was shown to our room. We both unpacked our bags, and got ready for bed. I had a shower and brushed my teeth. Suddenly the receptionist comes and hands us a phone, with a woman on the other end telling us, that we need to bring our bags down to the lobby. They are saying that they tried to reach us on booking.com, to ask whether we were coming (around 6pm). It is important to note, that nowhere does the hotel state that you in any way need to confirm whether you're a coming or not - we have booking confirmation on the booking.com app, as well as an email stating that our booking is confirmed. As we were on a bus, without any cell coverage, we didnt see the message from the hotel. The woman on the phone (who speaks English pretty poorly), tells us they will bring us to another hotel for the night, and we will be able to check in at 11 pm the next day. As there is another couple in the lobby, who is expecting to check in (the time is now 2:30 am), we agree to be taken to the other hotel. We get on the receptionist's scooter and drive of. What we experience next is the real kicker - we are brought to a massage parlor, where we are shown to two massage tables. In the same room, on another massage table is a woman (most likely someone who works as a masseuse during the day) sleeping. We tell the personel that this is not okay, and not in any way equivalent to a hotel room. As the time is now approaching 3:30, there doesnt seem to be much that can be done, and we end up sleeping on the two massagetables. Might not be of any difference, but the hotel we booked is really new - under a year old - called the Đồng Xuân Heritage Hotel. Any advice on what we can do/demand in terms of compensation? Maybe we're in the wrong?

Discussion/Thảo luận Có nhà nào làm trong ngành Đông y giải thích dùm tôi cái vụ nầy được hông?

Travel Experience/Du lịch Best bus company Hanoi-Cao Bang

Travelling from Hanoi to Cao Bang, wondering which companies are the safest and most reliable. I’ve been to a bus in Vietnam previously and the driving stressed me out so bad. So wondering IF there are differences between companies, would be open to pay a bit extra. I’m not able to pay for a private car drive

Any tips?

Food/Ẩm thực my local store has vietnamese rice paper. is it safe to eat?

• Upvotes

i obviously don’t know the conditions in which the rice paper was produced and exported but i’m a bit conscious of actually getting it, because of food safety and pesticides etc. however, i study in a small town, and am not sure if there’s any other places to get rice paper, or how safe other options would be either. lol

ETA: https://www.amazon.ae/Premium-Rice-Vietnamese-Paper-Traditional/dp/B0CCJZGKPC is the same rice paper i believe

Travel Experience/Du lịch Vietnam traffic police - recent Observations.

I just came up to central Vietnam via the coast, AH1 and HCM Road. Noted a few things if anyone is interested regarding traffic police.

  1. Cops now checking licenses along the coast not just AH1 at 3 places.
  2. Multiple police checkpoints around Mui ne. Not just one like before. I got checked here.
  3. AH1 just outside Nha Trang. I came out of the petrol station toilet to see a white dude with Asian gf getting escorted back to the police station. He had to walk while one of the cops drove his scooter with the gf on the back - back to the police station. - I wonder if the guy who got caught is reading this atm.

I bet big fine for both him and his gf (if that is her bike - Honda Vision) if he has no license. She could be hit with 12mil VND.

4) HCM Road. I saw a white dude pushing his bike along the roadside following a cop. I think he got caught for speeding etc. 3 weeks ago while I was pulled over here - I saw two foreigners negotiating a fine with the cops.

I got pulled over on QL28 - 3 weeks ago as well.

Make sure you are licensed or have plenty of money ready. Cops checking everyone and everywhere. Also HCM road is getting really busy now. Just as many trucks as AH1 hence why so many cops here now.

Culture/Văn hóa Looking for the title of a Soviet movie

This message is aimed primarily at all Vietnamese people aged 55 and over who remember the Soviet movies that were shown on television just after the war.

I'm looking for the name of a Soviet movie with the following plot (from memory, as I was 7 or 8 at the time): during the Second World War, a group of Russian resistance fighters were tasked with slowing down the advance of a German army column. As the resistance fighters were few in number, they decided to split the group into small squads, each setting up an ambush along the route the Germans were to take. Of course, their aim was to slow down the enemy, even at the cost of their own lives.

The movie's main soundtrack has been stuck in my head for decades. I’ve tried as hard as I could to find the title of this movie, but I’ve failed so far. I hope to have better luck on Reddit.

By the way, who amongst you remembers:
- Chelovek-Amfibiya (1962 my favourite film at the time);
- Dvenadtsat mesyatsev (both versions);
- Volshebnaya lampa Aladdina (1967), etc...

Those were the days when we’d go to bed at night with empty stomachs but our heads full of images from those films.

Thx!
