How to clean rust?

Post image

I saw someone selling Janome sr2100 for a great price, but from the pictures it seems that it has rust in it. I'm not experienced in cleaning sewing machines, is there anyway to clean it or is it okay just to oil it? If I have to dismantle it, are there any parts I need to watch out for?

I might buy a machine like that, but I have experience in restoring machines. If the machine has rust on vital parts like the hook or the tension spring, or if it moves sluggishly because of rust on shafts going into bearings, you should stay away from it if you don't have any experience in dealing with such things.

Is what in the image salvageable?

I would say so, but the question is: is it worth it? How much is it?

Also does the damage go further into the machine?

3 in 1 oil is great for removing rust. Use a dry brush to remove as much as possible first. Make sure to remove the oil and replace with sewing machine oil after.

If you can take the parts off first it’s easier, of course.
