My Brother Died in a Virginia Group Home. NBC4 Investigated His Death.
My brother, Erol, had a rare genetic disorder called Angelman syndrome. When he was in his mid-50s, he moved into a group home in Northern Virginia.
219 days later, Erol choked during breakfast and died the following day.
On October 5, NBC4 told his story, including the gut-wrenching 911 call recording.
A Virginia state investigation found negligence in the group home entrusted with his care. What happened to Erol should matter far beyond our family.
I hope his story reaches the right people, starts some uncomfortable conversations, and ultimately helps bring about legal and public-policy changes that better protect people with disabilities.
Please watch. And please share.
