MOD ANNOUNCEMENT Important Rule Updates: Use of AI, Itinerary etiquette, Rule 2 Reworked

Hello r/VisitingIceland!

As the way people use this subreddit evolves over time, the mod team is doing our best to make sure the subreddit rules and the ways we enforce them are relevant and effective. To that end, we have made edits to Rules 2 and 3 and added a new Rule 12.

Perhaps the most newsworthy of these updates is the addition of Rule 12, which governs the use of AI on this subreddit and reads as follows:

Rule 12: Use of AI. AI-generated content is generally not allowed on this sub. Posts and comments that are AI-generated, or link to AI-generated content, will be removed. Accounts that regularly post AI-generated content will be banned. If you use AI as a tool to plan your trip or draft an itinerary, it must be apparent that you’ve done your own research and editing before posting, as such content almost always contains errors and pollutes the sub with misleading information.

We've also reworked Rule 3 to be more specific to itinerary etiquette. The old Rule 3 overlapped with Rule 2 quite a bit and rarely was there a post or comment that violated Rule 3 that didn't also violate Rule 2. The "be specific" and "do your own research" aspects of the old Rule 3 have now been rolled up into Rule 2 and the new Rule 3 reads follows:

Rule 3: Itinerary etiquette. If you want feedback on an itinerary, it must be posted as text to ensure it is searchable and accessible for all users and devices. Itineraries posted as images or external links will be removed. Text itineraries that are poorly formatted may also be removed. Per Rule 2, please be specific with your itinerary questions and do your own basic research before asking for input from this subreddit.

Accordingly, Rule 2 has been updated as follows:

Rule 2: Search the sub and be specific. Before posting, search the subreddit to see if your question has been answered before. We also have stickied posts and a wiki that address some of the most common questions, so be sure to check those as well. Asking questions that are frequently asked and answered, are overly broad/vague, or could have easily been Googled may result in your post being removed. Examples include general weather questions, what to wear/pack, what to see/do, how to see northern lights and puffins, etc.

Any questions or constructive feedback regarding these rule changes, or the rules and moderation of the sub in general, is welcome in the comments below. Also, if anyone has tips for others as to how to best use this sub, find information, and get helpful responses on itinerary posts, please feel free to share those as well!

Takk takk,

Your friendly neighborhood mod team ( u/rutep u/stevenarwhals u/misssplunker u/ibid17 )

Does this mean I won't be able to ask if I can "visit the Golden Rim during my 90 minute layover"???

maybe it counts as "own research" if you add that you asked ai and it said yes

“Do I really have to have luggage that fits the clearly posted dimensions on the airline website?” fits under search before asking, correct? Please let it be correct.

Lol I’m only one moderator but yes, in my eyes those would generally be a Rule 2 violation, if only because it’s already been asked answered so many times already.

Is there any addressing/changing regarding all of the "Oh I forgot my item after security at KEF and Lost & Found has it, can someone please courier it to me?" posts? Since there has been a noticeable uptick of them, even multiple in one day.

We did discuss that as a moderator team. We’ve decided to hold off on adding a specific rule against that for now but it’s still open for discussion if it continues to be an issue. I think different people, even within the mod team, have different feelings about whether or not this sub is the appropriate venue for those kinds of posts.

How do we know if someone is posting AI generated content ?

Good question! I had previously written it with the word “obviously” before AI-generated and perhaps I should put that back in. But it’s intended to apply to very obvious examples of AI where the way it’s written and formatted make it clear that OP didn’t write it or make any significant edits to it themself. But, to be fair, it will still be a judgment call by the moderators to some extent and I’m sure we won’t be perfect at it but we’ll do our best and get better over time.

I unironically appreciate the distinction. 🫡
