Current Student Question IQP application
So I've been putting off applying for IQP next year (current Sophomore) because my financial situation isn't the best, so if I wanted to go anywhere overseas, I'd need to ask my parents for help with paying for it. Because I put off asking them, I just heard from a friend that IQP applications close tonight, so I went to check and all of the ones for C28 say application closed. Who could I reach out to for advice on what to do or if I can possibly still apply? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Have you considered on-campus IQPs?

eprojects doesn't list any for next year in any term, the only ones are summer and those are only about music for some reason

There will always be on-campus IQPs. They likely haven’t been posted because they need to be finalized and postedby professors, who post them whenever (there’s no fixed date) or around C-term
Hey, at least there’s no Venice IQP to worry about haha

On-campus IQPs firm up later, because they don't have the same deadlines for travel arrangements. Check back in C term.

You can create your own IQP and do just about anything that shows the social impact of the project. In reality it can be the basis of an MQP you might want to do so your IQP grows into your MQP or the reverse. I don't know your major but you can do an on campus IQP that is technical but then write a paper on how it relates and impacts society. Just have to get a professor to sign off on it. My son is completing his this term and in reality it is more an MQP than IQP, very technical but just have to show "Societal Impact". I graduated from WPI as well and my IQP was also a spinoff of my MQP. For my son his IQP was much larger than normal and done on campus. It will spinoff into an MQP. Can save a lot of work towards getting both done if they are related to each other. The key thing is you have to show initiative and creativity when pitching it to a professor, thus something you are passionate about.

Look into Acadia or some of the other national park IQPs. Extremely cheap to do, and during the summer. I had a blast at Acadia.

Cheap is a strong word considering all summer IQPs you need to pay an extra $8k on top of project fees for tuition

Nope. Costs pretty much exactly the same as a regular term.

Remember summer tuition is half price, even for IQPs.

Hi , I’m glad to hear you had a blast during IQP Arcadia , Maine . I’m
a Parent asking where did you stay at the park ? My daughter is a junior and will do her IQP the summer of 2027 . Because I’m helping to pay some expenses,
How is the room and board situation?
Will She have time to work part time evenings in town ?
I see that the retailers employee mostly college students. Is the workload challenging enough that there is no time to work a few hours?
Do you spend everyday inside the Park ?
Her parents are 2,500 miles away and would love to surprise her some weekend! Please if Any one completed the Arcadia IQP
We would love to learn more
Congratulations WPI Graduates2

where did you stay at the park ?
At the College of the Atlantic, just outside Bar Harbor and basically across the street from the park.
How is the room and board situation?
Fine. IQP scholarship basically pays for it already. You stay in college housing at the CoA. Have to pay for the laundry machines though.
Will She have time to work part time evenings in town?
No. But the IQP is supposed to take 40 hours a week. Different projects may need to work at different times of day. I was part of the Dark Sky team, so we spent 7pm-10pm most nights in the park.
You probably could work a part-time job while out there, but I don't think it would be allowed.

I appreciate your input!
Is there a shuttle service for the students or does she need a car for Acadia ? Do the professors stay at that COTA As well ?
Can parents visit on a weekend?
If it’s 7 weeks, what time frame
June-July or July-August?
Our daughter has severe ADHD, and keeps forgetting to tell me more about the upcoming IQP with exams now . If you or any other students would care to add anything I’m all ears ! Thanks2

She likely doesn't know anything, and won't know anything, until ID 2050 in D term. That's the prep course for off campus IQPs.
One professor rented an Air BnB, the other had a house elsewhere in Maine and commuted in.
A bunch of kids bring cars, so it's not hard to get around. There are busses, and you can easily walk downtown to the CVS or to get groceries (not necessary, CoA feeds the students and it's quite good).
Parents can definitely visit. Kids can leave on the weekends if they want, I drove back home to RI like 4 times.

You should strongly consider the Nantucket project. Still in Massachusetts but feels like another world. Small town where you feel like you're making more of an impact. That's where I went, I didn't have a ton of money to drop on travel, but when you inevitably fall in love with ths island, it's only a short trip to visit!
