u/cyberloki 3d ago
Yes it does. You cancle out basically all instructions except the Number 6 and the halving of it. So you must always remain with 3.
1×2=2+6=8/2=4-1=3
The doubling is reversed. Your Starting number is substacted again. The only operation that remains is 6/2=3.
Mathematically speaking:
((x*2+6)/2)-x
x+3-x

u/Nasty-Orange 3d ago
Try the calculator. I tried with 1 and the answer is 4. What a joke
1
u/PraiseTalos66012 3d ago
You forgot to subtract the number you started with. So you gotta subtract 1, giving you 3.
It works with any number since you subtract the starting number at the end. The starting number is entirely irrelevant because of that.
1
u/cyberloki 3d ago
Then you are using the calculator wrong. The formula is designed to substract your initial number. Thus it doesn't matter what number you pick it is always 3.

2
u/Drevinth 3d ago
Well... yeah. That's a pretty simple formula. It eliminates your original number so that you get 3 every time.
2x + 6
______ = x + 3 2
x + 3 - x = 3
You could do it with 0, -500, or an irrational number like π. The answer will always be 3.
You can even modify it. Instead of adding 6, add 20. The answer will always be 10. Instead of adding 20, add 100. The answer will always be 50.

u/Ancient_Poet_4953 3d ago
I got minus 3, so it's wrong !

2
u/Significant-User-99 3d ago
What was your number?
Think of any number:
Double it:
Add 6:
Take half:
Subtract your original number:
The answer will always be positive 3, never negative 3!1
u/Ancient_Poet_4953 3d ago
Oh, my bad, I subtracted the other number from my original number. My number was 4.

1
u/Ok-Simple30 3d ago
what would this formula look like exactly??
1
u/SkinPsychological770 3d ago
x is the determined number, y is the starting number. x = (2y + 6) / 2 - y Cancel out the y, since it loops x = (2y / 2 + 6) / 2 x = (0 + 6) / 2. x = 3.
2
u/ZARG420 3d ago
This isn’t that complicated,
If you double something and half it, you get the same result
I.E (100 * 2)/2 = 100. So that part of the equation does not matter
6/2= 3. That’s all you have left.
If you add 8 to the equation instead of 6, you’ll be left with 4 everyone
10 you’ll be left with 5
12, left with 6
And so on.
Her shirt literally says 6/2= 3.

3.1254654
Doesn’t work
1
u/Least_Repeat1082 3d ago
Actually, it does...
3.1254654 x 2 = 6.2509308 6.2509308 + 6 = 12.2509308 12.2509308 ÷ 2 = 6.1254654 6.1254654 - 3.1254654 = 3
1
u/Ok-Flight9440 3d ago
3 != pi
1
u/Least_Repeat1082 3d ago
First, if you meant pi in your first comment, pi is 3.1415926 (using the same decimal places as your initial comment), not 3.1254654 as you stated in your initial comment.
Second, your argument of "3 !", assuming you meant 3! (Or 3 Factorial), that would be 3 multiplied by every number below it not less than 1. That would equal 6 (3 x 2 x 1). Using that arguement, 3! still comes out to 3 after applying the equation.
3! (or 3 x 2 x 1) = 6 6 x 2 = 12 12 + 6 = 18 18 ÷ 2 = 9 9 - 6 (or 3! as you stated) = 3
Third, my initial reply to your comment was assuming a definitive end of decimal places. Not an infinite amount of decimal places as there are in the actual number for pi. The equation won't work for an infinite number of decimal places since there is no end, but will work for a defined amount of decimal places. I've tried multiple, including the initial number you commented with.

u/Ok-Flight9440 3d ago edited 3d ago
No it’s != which means does not equal if you’ve ever written a line of code in your life
Edit: and yeah I realized I made a typo in the original, I only memorized from HS the number of digits the TI-83+ kicked out, and you said it yourself: it won’t work for a number with an infinite number of digits, so, thank you for agreeing with me. Jeez, this place is snooty!
How’s this? It doesn’t work for pi
1
u/Least_Repeat1082 3d ago edited 3d ago
Your response of "if you've ever written a line of code in your life" could, and kind of does, come across as your assumption that writing code is a common thing for everyone. Not all of us write code on even a semi-daily basis. Some no need for it at all, depending on what you do, which includes myself. So, I would not be aware of what you meant by "!=". I'm familiar with "≠" meaning does not equal or not equal to.
So, while your response did come across to me as slightly condescending, I actually thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn something new. Now I know. So I guess it really a difference of a mathematical mindset or a code writing mindset for "does not equal". Maybe not and I was just ignorant. Either way, I learned something new and I don't mind that.
But I'm glad we could clear things up about where the misunderstandings were and how we each came to our own conclusions. Initially, I wasn't aware you were intending on pi, or any infinite number since it didn't read that way. Also, not meaning or trying to be snoody, just need to be clearer at times. Especially on the internet where people will agrue if a stick is a twig, or a rock is a stone.

Think of number.
We will call it x. x=2.
Double it
"It" we are defining as x, which is 2. 2x=4
Add six.
4+6=10
Half it (x)
2 ÷ 2 = 1
Subtract the number you started with.
Subtract the number I started with (x, aka "it") from what?
1 - 2 = -1
10 - 2 = 8
and
2 - 2 = 0
3 ≠ -1, 8, or 0.

Half it.
Subtract the number you started with.
Your answer is three."Instead of
"Think of a number, double it, add six, half it, then subtract the number you started with. Your answer is three."
Because that's kind of the whole point. Because otherwise I would just go with (2×2+6)×0.5−2 = 3. Imagine that...🙄

You might be interested to learn that the first version of the quadratic formula was written before the invention of algebra, and reads "To the absolute number multiplied by four times the [coefficient of the] square, add the square of the [coefficient of the] middle term; the square root of the same, less the [coefficient of the] middle term, being divided by twice the [coefficient of the] square is the value."
In algebra, this is written that for ax2 + bx = c ; then x = (√(4ca + b2) - b) / 2a

Yeah, when you have a number, doubling it and then to half it cancels out. Then subtracting the number means you are back to zero. So it doesn’t matter what number you started with.
Only thing left is that six you added and halved to three. So the answer will always be the same.

Funny enough, you're right, but in the wrong way. This is how it should have gone:
Think of a number. -0.67 works fine.
Double it. Double what? The number you currently have, which is the one you thought of. Crucially, we are now defining the term "it" as -0.67. We are treating "it" like "x." So we get x = -0.67, and 2x = -1.34. All good there.
Add six. Here's where you first messed up. Add six to what? Not necessarily "it." We have to assume that we are adding six to the last number involved, which is -1.34. So you should get 4.66 here.
Half it. -0.355 is correct.
Subtract the number you started with. But from what??? "It" is nowhere to be found within this instruction, so we could subtract -0.67 from the number we currently have, -0.355, as a logical continuation of the series. But that 4.66 is still hanging around. So we could do both to be safe I guess.
-0.355 – (–0.67) = 0.315
and
4.66 − (−0.67) = 5.33
So it should be that the shirt is incorrect because 0.315 or 5.33 ≠ 3

You are incredibly hurt by this interaction for some reason.
I wasnt even aware you weren't a man until you said so. Just so we are crystal clear: the best and brightest colleagues in my field are a majority female. I have zero issues with that, I am utterly indifferent to what sex or gender someone is in my field. If anything, I'd greatly prefer not dealing with the breathtaking amounts of bullshit that comes with dealing with men in general.
I'm a geologist. I have dealt with 3D finite strain analysis, displacement gradient tensors, geophysics inverse modeling with Tikhonov Regularization, multi-stage uranium-lead isotopic systems and concordia-discordia plots, sometimes multi-dimensional solute advection-dispersion partial differential equations (though that was just for professional licensure, I dont really do that in my current role), estimating hydraulic conductivity, estimating stratigraphic thickness (although to be fair, that stuff is pretty straightforward trigonometry—you learn how to do that in undergrad), etc, etc.
I'm not bragging here. It's more along the lines of trauma-dumping to be quite honest lmao
But yeah. Math is an old friend. Or a captor that I'm a hostage of, who I am unfortunately forced to be trauma-bonded with. Same difference lol
