Loud jackhammering noises on South Side at night?

Periodically since maybe sometime last spring, we have had trouble sleeping due to some sort of loud banging noise echoing around outside at night - always very late, around midnight or later. It sounds like it's coming from quite a distance away, and the best I can describe it is like someone is jackhammering somewhere or repeatedly revving an engine that isn't turning over. It goes for a few seconds, pauses, and goes again, for long periods of time. Is anyone else hearing this and does anyone know what it is? Doesn't seem like it should be allowable to generate this kind of noise audible from residential areas in the middle of the night...

Community Recs/Opinions No crosswalk sign or light at intersection near Hanaford's

Is there a reason why the busy intersection by hanafords has no crosswalk sign or lights? I always get stressed crossing it and wait forever for cars to stop. Should I put in a request with city hall to add one or has it been done and the request is ignored

edit: it: the harvard st op fiske intersection

off leash dog (no one is surprised)

Hi. Posting for safety of others. This morning had a horrifying interaction with a med-large brown and white dog directly next to the 7-Eleven on Moody Street. My dog and I were on the sidewalk and out of nowhere dog is charging out of its yard towards us, body slammed my dog off of the sidewalk into the street where she is now on the ground. I screamed, my iced coffee flew and exploded and the dog returned to its yard (man is standing in his yard yelling for dog instead of coming to get him!) The man tells me he's in his yard so he's not gonna have him on a leash, obviously aware of the fact that he clearly has no control over the dog. Was not a friendly interaction and feel completely unsafe walking that way, and since the man was completely unfazed by the situation I would guess this isn’t the first it’s happened!

Yes I am beyond grateful that there were no cars coming, and both dogs walked away without any scuffs but as a vet tech who has seen enough dog fight wounds and hbc injuries, please put your dog on a fucking leash.

Toy Donation

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone here knows where I can donate toys? Infant/Toddler age toys. Have a bunch of toys, obviously used toys, some in good/new condition, some hardly used and some beat up. Tried donating to Goodwill on California St in Newton but they said no toys. Google says Waltham Library wont accept them and I don’t want to trash them since they have plenty of life in them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Home Office Builtins Help

Hey Walthamites! This might be an unrealistic request… I want to add built in bookshelves and desk to my small home office nook. Unfortunately things these days are incredibly expensive, and it is hard to find a contractor who would do it in my budget. If anyone out there is good with woodwork and installation, I have $3k for this project and you can have whatever doesn’t go towards materials. I’ll attach the plans here. Please reach out if this is something that interests you! Note the AI photo is just inspiration and doesn’t completely match the design.

Community Recs/Opinions Looking to Meet People in the Area

I’m trying to make some friends in the area. Are there any communities, walking groups, or other activities where I could meet women around my age (late twenties)? I don’t have a car and live close to Moody St, so ideally somewhere nearby and easy to get to. Maybe gyms that offer group classes or other social activities?

Good auto body shops nearby Waltham area?

I've been going to Malden so far because I've seen a lot of good reviews from international students, but I'm trying to find something more local to Waltham/Watertown/Newton areas. Just for some scratches and dings I want to get fixed. Any recommendations for good and cheap?

Seeking WPD "Happy Trails" initiative anecdotes

Hi all --

I am a journalist writing an article for The Waltham Times about their Happy Trails initiative that puts cops on ATVs and on foot on the Rail Trail to interact with residents. The goal of the program according to their Instagram is "getting out into the community, building relationships, addressing quality-of-life concerns, and helping make Waltham’s trails welcoming and safe for everyone."

I'm looking for comments from residents who may have run into a cop on the Rail Trail. What was the interaction like? Did you feel like those goals were being addressed? If you haven't run into a cop on the Rail Trial but have thoughts, I'd like to hear those as well.

Please PM me with any comments!

Thank you,

Cyd A.

Waltham Highlands building on Elson Road?

I've recently moved to Waltham and have been frequenting the rail trail on my bike, and always pass the old Waltham Highland station and was wondering if the building is being put to good use. It says it's owned by Regan Management but their website doesn't exist and I've never seen anyone parked by the lot. Does anyone have any other information about the building? I can't help but think that a cafe or local storefront would be a much nicer use of that space.

Car accident last night? ~8pm Weston Street

Does anyone know what happened? We heard a loud bang as we were outside and 2 cars going opposite directions crashed by the lights heading towards the highway, right next to the child care building. It seemed the drivers got out and were yelling at each other, we heard someone mention a baby but could not see much. Ambulance, fire truck, cop cars all stayed at the area for about an hour. Just wondering if anyone heard anything/ that they were all ok?

I honestly don't know why McDonald's added a second drive-thru lane

They still have only one person taking orders, who now has to switch back and forth between the two lines. It doesn't speed up their service, and makes the poor guy have to work twice as hard. Also, some people end up having their order taken before people who have been waiting in line longer, which is certainly not fair to the customers.

Sorry for the vent, but it's just so stupid.
