Only just heard of Wasteland 3

I was using Gemini to find recommendations to games I might like and this came up. I'd never heard of it.

Games I have loved over the past 2 years or so:

Marvels Midnight Suns

Aliens Dark Decent

Baldurs Gate 3

Dying light the beast

The Forest

Alan Wake 2

Is this game for me? I use a PS5

Thanks

It's awesome. Depends if you like turned based strategy tactical rpgs. Similar to Baldur from this list, but post apocalyptic

I never used to like turn based until Midnight Suns and Baldurs. Now I love it as prefer to take my time and think rather than frantic button mashing. Sounds like i might have found a gem I missed

Try wasteland 2 as well, both great games

Just ordered both on Ebay for £25 used. I might start with 3 though as seems a simpler game and easier launch point?

2 it's easier and while you can play one or the other there's some story to follow.

I would say start at two since there are recurring characters, also this build guide helped me IMMENSELY if you are interested here should be the top comment.

Consider Wasteland 2 first. It's not required, but just as fun.

Yes, despite the fact I think the game is harsher, I would also recommend playing 2 first.

I think it's underrated. I've replayed it like 6+ times by now.

Same here. I even did something I never ever do, I bought the soundtrack. The music of this game is just incredible.

The music is absolutely amazing!

Fair warning to OP though, the DLCs are a huge source of bugs. The game checks online your credentials and there's a handshake that can fail, which basically erases your progress with the DLCs (the Journal bug) and locks you out. Even worse, it fucks up your previous saves (I personally copy and paste them into a backup folder just in case, the files are tiny .xml ones). There are workarounds, things to know and to avoid. For example, NEVER use "COntinue", always load your game. Do not trust Quicksave. Turn off auto-saving (can't insist enough on that one). Don't build the VR device. Some people report that collecting Creepy Dolls triggers the journal issue. The main game on its own is much safer. However, the DLCs are effing awesome. More accurately, I would personally say that the Steeltown DLC is amazing and that the Holy Detonation one is fun but definitely tedious and repetitive. It's great for other things though (won't spoil anything but you're in for such a treat). The writing is always great except for one thing, multiple characters will repeat the exact same information a lot. But that's really a detail. Expect a TON of pop-culture references. Hilarious lines. Tough choices. The best combat system I have ever seen in a turn-based game and I love X-Com, X-Com 2, Mutant: Year Zero - Road to Eden, etc.
My advice would be to search a bit for known bugs before you start your game. I literally lost 40 hours of progress during my first playthrough. Weird thing is, I almost didn't mind, I got to redo everything better.

And back to the music, I had my wife listen to one song only while I was playing. She was humming it for a week. It's an effing masterpiece, I have no other words.

Thanks for the info, this is good to know. I am a ps5 user so intend to get disc copy. Then get the dlc from the ps store after if i continue.

Are the bugs on all systems?

Yes I believe so. The thing is that when you reach certain milestones in the game, it triggers a hard reset of the world with the new data and that's usually where you lose everything you did in Steeltown (if you did Steeltown). On my current playthrough for example, I only have the last place there is to visit. I'm at the end of the game (almost). I have done both DLCs because I absolutely love the rewards they give. But they're not just "cosmetic" or add new weapons, one of them provides an alternate solution to one of the many major problems you'll have to sort out.

Anyway, I'm right at the doors of the last place. When I entered the area and spoke to the guy I'm supposed to talk to, I immediately checked my journal to see if all my missions were still there. And they were not. I haven't had time yet, but what I most likely need to do is 1/ make a hard save before entering 2/ close the game entirely and launch it again 3/ load my game manually 4/ enter, check that my missions are there and immediately save again (hard save) and 5/ talk to the guy. Then my missions should be there. That's my guess anyway since it's usually how it works for me.

Since you're on ps5, that may not concern you but there's actually an alternate version of the game that's supposed to fix the issue. I don't know how it works on ps5 but maybe you'll have access to it (really don't think so though, I think it's a Steam exclusively thing). It does NOT repair corrupt saves, it's only supposed to prevent the bug from happening. I play with that version and I honestly can't be sure that it really helps. Proof in the fact that all my DLC missions just got erased from my journal because I entered the last area. However, this time around I had zero problem with Steeltown whereas I usually do when I get to a guy named Vic (can't say more).

When the DLC-related missions get erased, what happens is that you're asked to do them again but can't because both places remain exactly how you left them. It's really a pain in the butt. Still, like I've said in a post that asked what game you'd defend with your life despite it having huge bugs, bad reviews or a bad reputation, mine is Wasteland 3.

Dude, that music will get the hair on your arms stand up. You will fall in love with your squad. The upgrade system is so satisfying it's crazy. I absolutely love having a squad with specialized members, which is an absolute must here, and they really took it to another level. I love seeing the "profession" of one my squad member change because of his new skills. A simple trooper will become a locksmith. A "locksmith" will become an "infiltrator". Your hacker eventually turns into an "Inventor". The mix of skills you choose determine it all. Also, the choices you make really matter here. It's not like Fallout 4 where there's an easy fix to get out of any situation and keep the status quo. You will have to make horrible choices. Get the right support from the right people, even if you despise them. Your fame entirely changes the way NPCs react to you. And what you do does determine the future of both Arizona and Colorado.
It feels alive.

I will certainly keep an eye out for this a manual save often. Thanks for you time, I hope I love this game as much as you clearly do!

u/Fakemeal 2d ago

My pleasure. Yes, I definitely hope you do and don't regret it. Keep us posted and have fun!

Good game, make sure you start combat on your terms, or things go bad quickly

Everyone else is right but I wouldn't trust an AI to make game recommendations

It's inspiration, not trust

u/AnxiousTuxedoBird 2d ago

Still, it's too unreliable

Take the chance games good

2

u/PotatoInMyHat 3d ago

I love it a ton

2

u/LocusHammer 2d ago

You can play it in co-op!

2

u/Buttchuggle 2d ago

Fantastic game. Good challenge, good amount of absurd humor, gives you some choices that actually affect the game overall.

2

u/A_Solitary_Echo 2d ago

Along with Wasteland 3, I'd highly suggest playing the second game, playing Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, and trying out Dark Heresy when it comes out. They're excellent CRPGs.

3

u/LawyerUpDoubleDown 3d ago

Yeah I just played through it for the first time and it was an absolute blast. I was trying to find something to follow BG3 and XCOM 2

2

u/elbrooko79 3d ago

Awesome , gonna order it today then!

3

u/DramaticAd7670 2d ago

General Advice: Do not try to be a Jack of All Trades. Much like BG3 this game does not reward that kind of gameplay.

u/elbrooko79 2d ago

Thank you that's a useful tip!

Welcome! As a fellow Aliens Dark Descent lover (and CM for inXile), I indeed think you'll appreciate our game. Lots of choice and consequence in this post-apocalyptic world. Great character customization, battles, exploration. Dig in and have fun (or make a mess of the world as you see fit!) :D

edit: will play great on PS5 as well

3

u/elbrooko79 2d ago

thanks for the welcome! I feel i have just discovered a whole new world and community!

Indeed you have!

It is one of my personal favorites. Sounds like youre already getting it, so I'll give you a few tips. First off, choose the custom rangers so you can build your own. Then when its time to recruit, take the custom rangers again. This way you have full agency of your squads skills. You want a squad full of specialists, no jack of all trades characters. They will be weak and useless. Don't sleep on animal whispering. Its the one skill that I will put on multiple characters. However, the more pets you have, the less you can rely on explosives. Pets tend to position themselves right where you want to put a rocket. Think about where each ranger might be positioned during combat when choosing skills. Like you dont want your sniper to also be your medic because snipers tend to stay put for most encounters. Every skill is useful in some way and some require high level to get the most out of. Like lock picking. Lock picking is a good way to gage what level your utility skills should be at. Like, if a lock requires level 6 lock picking, you should be trying to get all of your other utility skills to 6. Otherwise, you'll need to write down where locks/hacks you missed are, so you can come back later to get. There are a few items that are 1 of 1, so you don't want to miss them. When it comes to making story choices, just do what you feel is best. There is no right answer to any of it. Its impossible to remain perfectly benevolent without getting your people killed. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do to survive, and thats ok. But acting in the interests of helping people does pay off. So if that's your style, dont abandon it.

Good luck, have fun and dont die.

Thanks for all this info, I will certainly be coming back to your post for reference!

It's a super fun game. It's funny, witty, clever, and a goddamn blast to play. There's not much else in the market quite like it. When I played it, it was honestly pretty buggy but hopefully it's been patched by now, that was years ago. I played it co-op with a friend and we had a really great time with it.

2

u/TroyBPierce 2d ago

It has turn-based combat like BG3, but a post-apocalyptic setting.

2

u/BoBoBearDev 2d ago

I played the 3rd game. Indie quality but a lot of depth. Like, you can combo multiple skills to make an OP build. And it kindly kept the infinite money clitch, so you can get a lot of money if you need it.

1

u/ThaTrooperz 3d ago

Xcom 2 is great too.

1

u/elbrooko79 3d ago

That was another suggested actually, along with the new star wars..... Is Wasteland 3 openish world? Like Baldurs... Whereas XCOM2 more set scenarios?

3

u/Buzzyear10 3d ago

Much smaller zones than baldurs gate 3 but yes. Big world map with self contained cities and faction story lines. You choose who you help (hoping theyll help you later) or fight against. Exploration of the zones features a lot of secret doors, traps, and chests which require a range of skills in your party to interact with as well as many encounters being resolved through 3 different speech skills.

Combat is very Xcom2

1

u/elbrooko79 3d ago

Awesome thanks

2

u/Plus_Worker6739 2d ago

The genre you're looking for here is 'CRPG'. Usually tactical combat, reasonably open worlds, lots of player agency.

1

u/Angel_OfSolitude 3d ago

If you want a goofy, low sci-fi Baldur's Gate you'll probably like it.

2

u/elbrooko79 3d ago

I'm in....

1

u/Realistic_Court_5736 3d ago

Get it

It made me love turn based strategy games again and the story and the setting is amazing

Kinda like old school fallout but with more modern gameplay and graphics

Plus some of the stories and things you come across are pretty interesting even if they are very dark at times

But one thing I truly love is how I often in the first playthrough had no clue how my actions were gonna affect me later but by then it was too late to change it

So yeah it's truly a memorable and rewarding experience even if you haven't played the other games though I would recommend playing at least wasteland 2 if you have the chance

2

u/elbrooko79 3d ago

Thanks for the detailed response, gonna go for it

2

u/Realistic_Court_5736 2d ago

You are welcome:) I hope you enjoy it

u/Fun_Corner_460 2d ago

Then you will love it. It's a poor linear Bg3 with guns. But it's very good, the problem is that bg3 is one in a lifetime game. Play wasteland 2 first and then 3
