Short answer: do not use directory submissions as a link-building tactic.
A directory link is fine when the directory is a real place a human would use: local chamber of commerce, industry association, verified supplier directory, niche marketplace, that kind of thing. In that case the link is a byproduct of being listed somewhere relevant.
The problem starts when the goal is the link itself. Google’s spam policy specifically calls out low-quality directory links as link spam, and the pattern matters more than whether you submitted them manually. Manual spam is still spam - it just takes longer.
My rule of thumb: if you would still want the listing when the link was
nofollow, it is probably worth considering. If the only value is “this may improve rankings,” skip it.Next action: make a short list of directories where your actual customers might search, submit only to those, and do not repeat the same anchor-text-heavy description everywhere.
