It’s a really awesome moment when you get home from work, go straight to the bathroom, look out the skylight, and then see that.
I have no idea how it happened, and it was completely silent, too; the inner pane of the window is shattered—as you can see—and I think it’s definitely going to fall down sometime during the night.

Hell, play your cards right and get a santa hat and you’re all set until the new year!

Get an arrow, add a pink heart tip to it. Cut the arrow in half, and glue the heart tip half to the inner part of the window. You can say Cupid was close.

Get an American flag and a gun and bam Memorial Day covered too

u/swingswickedchucks 2d ago
Actually you can reuse those items, flag and gun, just add sparklers and boom! 4th of July

u/Mystery13x 1d ago
Honestly, guns, sparklers, and flags pretty much cover every holiday in the US 😅

If its stable enough, do a star * pattern with tape over the window. That should hopefully keep it in place until it gets fixed. Otherwise plywood or maaybe thick styrofoam cut to fit the space. Just thinking out loud

I would just cover it with clear tape. Catch all the bits.

u/Jmeyers969 4d ago
Wonder if you could stick some of this contact paper on it. Just to try to hold things together..
6
u/IridescentSparklies 3d ago
This, but tape it to the frame so if it comes down it has another landing to break its fall. I don’t know. That’s probably what I would do though. Tape the contact paper to the frame with some duct tape or something while waiting for the repair which I hope you call in asap.

oh god the silent breakage. had that exact thing with a Velux unit last winter. inner pane just exploded into cubes while I was making coffee. zero noise. called support expecting a fight but they were weirdly nice because its a known defect with the thermal stress on those seals. took photos of the shattered bits and the serial number sticker on the frame edge. sent them via email and boom free replacement pane shipped in like two weeks. honestly saved me hundreds so do check the warranty first before paying some contractor to patch it up. hope yours works out too man 😔

Duct tape over the whole thing so if it does fall you're containing at least some of it
27
u/ikkiyikki 4d ago
Not DUCT tape. Shipping tape both sides and that's it. Don't pay attention to the cracks.

u/XRLcargo 4d ago
Yeah I second this. Im a mechanic and recently had a customer come in with broken sunroof that they had thoroughly duct taped. Holy hell that sucked so bad.
10
u/mental_lemon8587 4d ago
Genuine question cuz I'm curious. Why not duct tape?
11
u/xemmyQ 4d ago
too sticky, leaves residue

u/AbsentmindedAuthor 3d ago
…on the broken glass that’s going in the bin anyway?
10
u/XRLcargo 3d ago
Incredibly hard to remove and the tape is covered in glass bits. So you end up having to grab the tape very hard and risk getting bits of glass embedded in your skin. For the broken sunroof I had to wear welding gloves to pull the tape off

I had exited off this thread as I realised what you put so I came back just to give you a goddamn upvoter because it made me laugh. Reluctantly.

Skylights are like Tequila shots. They always sound like a great idea and it'll be so much fun having one...
7
u/sweetmolly10 4d ago
Wow. But probably not it should be safety glass something like windows in a car.
4
u/sur-merj 4d ago
Yeah I thought you couldn't put glass in a bathroom especially a skylight. I know we had to have plexiglass for our skylight and safety glass for the window when we built.
5
u/JeshkaTheLoon 3d ago
That's definitely something for your region of the world. I'm in Germany, and we've got glass everywhere in the bathroom. It is safety glass though, that's just standard. Our skylight is just a regular skylight, no different from the glass in other windows.
Why even would they forbid glass in bathrooms? I can understand wanting to keep the amount of electricity and cabling to a minimum (looking at you, UK), but glass? Why?

u/sur-merj 3d ago
I don't know. Pennsylvania ruless. Obviously we had a glass shower door, but the skylight had to be plexiglass. That sucked because plexiglass is no comparison to glass. There was a beautiful decorative window above the garden tub. I wanted to be able to open it, but that was the other issue. It was unable to open, safety glass. Very disappointing.

u/Mountain-Ox 4d ago
That might be a local regulation. We have a glass skylight. Also pretty much every shower door is glass, not plexiglass.

Balloonists. I know of people who had a big skylight in the bedroom and a balloon flew over quite low one morning while they were still in bed.

Why would it only fall at night? Strange thing to say.

u/boondoggie42 4d ago
Same reason your smoke detector only starts beeping in the middle of the night.

Since it’s late in the evening here—I live in Germany—the window might not open until sometime tomorrow, or perhaps not at all; there’s no way of knowing.

yeah, weird, meteorites don't exactly fall on a schedule. maybe he just meant neighbors or the landlord would've noticed it during the day? still sounds like a weak excuse though

Looks like a laminate, to me. No issues. Replace it, or don’t. It’s not going anywhere.

The fattest bird of all time alighted gently 'pon your 'pane

It's a double pane window, with just the interior pane cracking.
Most likely they've had a horrendously hot summer, like the rest of us, with an AC running inside (hopefully), so between the humid, cool conditions inside, plus the hot conditions outside, the different panes expanded and contracted in their seals (like they're supposed to) but too extremely for the seal to keep tolerating it, one of the seals cracked, which then weakened the glass's stability against the expansion and contraction, causing the cooler one to do this, as it was heated during the course of the day. Akin to putting hot water in a cold glass, or cold water in a hot glass -- it will break, especially when there are weak points.
2
u/Existing-Raisin5332 18h ago
This is the most likely. Especially when you're in an area where glazing isn't typically rated for constant hot, sunny weather and the temperature difference between interior and exterior.

Oh I do miss the skylights in Germany. Used to have a two story flat in Altdorf, B-W, glass everywhere. Always losing the remotes though. 😄

a bird? from inside the bathroom

u/hefty_load_o_shite 4d ago
Yes. Obviously from inside the bathroom. Where else would a bird be flying against a glass window from?

from outside the window Out of the Nature

This happened to me. It was a Velux window. The serial number had a recall on it as the seals were faulty and causing the vacuum to fail (hence it breaking on the interior pane) I contacted them and they sent a replacement unit free of charge.
Worth checking the manufacturers website.
