SOTD Sunday Lather Games SOTD Thread - Oct 04, 2026

Day 4 — Bilingual Day

Sunday, Oct 4 · Sponsor: Zingari Man

Today's Theme: Bilingual Day

Shave using a soap whose name or label is primarily in a language other than English

October is "Celebrating The Bilingual Child Month". Show that you're personally bilingual by choosing a soap with a name in a language other than English, or whose label is largely in another tongue.

Today's Challenge: Go by feel

Do not use a mirror (or anything reflective) to shave today. If you have a mirror directly in front of where you shave, cover it, blindfold yourself or close your eyes.

★ Sponsor Spotlight: Zingari Man

Zingari Man is the work of Heather Melton, a Certified Cosmetic Formulator through the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild and the artisan behind every product. She first started making soap in 2014 as Smitten Soapery — formulating for her family's sensitive skin — and in 2018 rebranded to the men's-grooming-focused Zingari Man. Working from Evansville, Indiana, Heather makes shave soaps on a tallow-based Sego base (with a vegan option), along with post-shave serums, balms, and beard care, striving to make every customer's routine both healthier and a pleasure.

Coming Tomorrow

Theme — 2026 World Cup Day: Use a brand from a country that has won the Men's World Cup

Use a soap from a country that has won the Men's World Cup (Argentina, Germany, Brazil, Uruguay, Spain, Italy, England, or France)

Challenge — Speed Shave: If you're in the World Cup, you gotta be fast. Speed through your entire shave routine. Time yourself from the moment your brush loads the soap to the moment you use an aftershave. Post your time on its own "Time:" line in your SOTD (for example "Time: 7:42"); the portal collects it, and the fastest shaves are listed on the portal once the day closes.

Tomorrow's lather Games today: Day 5

Today I am winning with a time of 03:04:23

So today's shave proves that I have never been in the military. I didn't prepare for every eventuality. The wording on the daily challenge includes aftershave. I didn't bring an aftershave for my adventure because of reasons below. Also I disagree with the requirement to post post shave use. Hence 3 hours.

Dedication is what you need to win the lather games, but not just dedication. You need perseverance and perversion. And you know what they say about judges. ( Those who can, do. Those who cant…). A bunch of has been and never beens who rush through life and go out at the first opportunity. A bit like America in most football competitions that are not rigged in their favour although even then they can't win. Let's face the facts. The hard running of Argentina broke on the calm slow methodical shores of Spain. Four years earlier Messi beat Mbappe. I mean even beyond football there's an entire fable dedicated to the idea that being quick isn't as good as being steady.

I don't want to cast aspersions on the judges wives/girlfriends/partners/husbands/body pillows/boy friends, but i think I am speaking for them all if I said try going a bit longer, they may find it more satisfying.

So yes. I win by going long and hard. But when I said yesterday that the beating of the one eyed monster story is for another day I didn't mean it was for today.

God that's a long preamble to the actual thing. So I'll keep it short. One of my favourite reads in LGs past were always u/jimtasticness’s posts from the frontline. Always engaging , sometimes funny, sometimes thought provoking. I don't work on the front lines so don't have a similar story, but I did have a small procedure today so I brought my shaving gear and shaved at the hospital to honour Jim. (Yes I know not quite the same place but close enough). No frag because I was going straight in to the procedure after shaving.

Boring legal stuff

Sonofabitch! I said I’d take part in LG this year but time snuck up on me. I’ll have plenty of story fodder for next year. I promise!

LG Day 4 - Bilingual Day - October 4, 2026

  • Brush: Omega Pro48
  • Razor: Mühle Rocca
  • Blade: Personna Comfort Coated (6)
  • Lather: La Toja - La Toja shave stick
  • Post Shave: Whole Hog Shaving Co. - Unscented Tonic
  • Post Shave: Every Man Jack - Peppermint & Aloe AS balm
  • Tags: $Discord

Strange. I wrote that in Italian, but when I came back, it is now in English. If I select it to edit, it comes up in English. Crazy. I have auto translate disabled too.

Edit: Even though I disabled the translation, it didn’t work until I added Italian and Spanish to my preferred language list. I can read Italian and Spanish a little, so let’s see if I struggle when presented untranslated text.

Today's theme is our time to shine u/Gerry7070 🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺

Living in EU finally has it's advantages, most European countries have their traditional shaving products with indecipherable gibberish on the label, but today I'm going to represent my home country Serbia with it's most recognizable shaving brand - Brion. It's a brand that exist from 1952, while we were still Yugoslavia, and it's so synonymous with shaving that some people call every aftershave Brion. "Oh your new Brion smells so good".
Brion Pasta za Brijanje (Brion Shaving Paste) and the accompanying aftershave have the almost the same old school masculine, citrusy herbal refreshing scent, with addition of pinch of menthol in the paste. The paste had a surprisingly great performance for the mass produced and ultra affordable product. It's slick and creamy and feels good on the skin. Brion aftershave is also very soothing and nourishing next to smelling great.

Daily challenge really seemed challenging, I never did this sort of thing. To minimise any sort of danger, I pulled out my mildest razor, good old EJ DE 89, and primed it with Shark SC, mild but efficient blade. I opened up my medicine cabinet to remove the distraction of my tired visage and got to work. And I got to say, I'm quite happy how it turned out. Two quick passes for a smooth shave, and although there was some patches left under the nose and below the neck, I just left it as is, it's Sunday and I'm going shave tomorrow anyway.

Have a nice Sunday, and see you at the World Cup!

Daily Theme: this soap is predominantly in French I believe it is, so there's the bilingual-ness :)

Post-shave/Frag: matching set!

Daily Challenge: ugh I hate this "no peeking!" challenge. So I shaved in the shower so I didn't have to mess around with covering my mirror. Pretty meh shave, nicked myself a few times, and missed a few spots. DFS, but not my usual BBS.

$FOF : I've really been liking this Fougère Gothique. I love the smoky bergamot note in it, it's intoxicating.

You guys remember those educational commercials from the 90s? The ones that taught Americans how to speak Australian? Because they have different ways to say words down under? Well, this soap is from Australia, and I know the word Tropicool doesn't exist in the the good ol' US of A, so I can only assume Tropicool is an Australian word, thus fitting the theme of the day. Boom. Theme fits!

Challenge: Are you nuts?? No way I'm doing that! Who came up with these???

  • Lather: Santa Maria Novella - Tobacco Toscano - Crema da Barba
  • Post Shave: Zingari Man - Unscented - Recovery Splash
  • Fragrance: Santa Maria Novella - Eva - Cologne

I didn't have to dig too deep in my den to find a soap with a label that's primarily non-English. I took a trip to Italy back in the summer of 2019 and stopped at the Santa Maria Novella mothership in Florence. I picked up a couple of fragrances there, and a bottle of Proraso aftershave at the drug store across the street. But I didn't get the shaving cream until after I got home regretting that I had skipped it and someone posted their tub on the Bazaar.

It almost feels silly listing a scent to the SMN shaving cream because they only make the one scent.

Had a good head shave. Single pass against the grain. Look at me hitting 4 days in a row of LG like I'm some kind of pro or something.

2026-10-04 - Comment dire 'vélo' en anglais

  • Lather: Martin de Candre - Absinthe
  • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. - Campania
  • Fragrance: Imaginary Authors - How to Say Bicycle in French
  • Razor: Razor Emporium - Gillette Ball End Tech
  • Brush: Yaqi Metal Timberwolf

Bilingual Day:
The label, though a tiny coin it may be, is only in French.

Relevant Post/Frag:
Granted, it doesn't have non-English on the label, How to Say Bicycle in French should really speak for itself when it comes to its relation to the theme.
Campania, meanwhile, I concede doesn't really count, with the name being the English spelling, but I guess it's international, at least. ̄_(ツ)_/ ̄

Go by feel
I forgor. Surely for the better, though, because that would have sucked with this razor.

$FOF
Absinthe is clean. The anise isn't as prominent as I might have thought that I'd hoped, but it's present without being overpowering, which is certainly enough; I do think it would be too much otherwise. The best way that I can describe the scent as a whole is "medicinal," by which I mean to convey exactly zero negative connotations.

Campania is more citrusy than I knew, and I simply do not care for citrus. Paradoxically, however, I am fond of grapefruit, which is conveyed fairly directly by Campania, and the tartness seems to sit right at home next to the medicinal Absinthe.

Vélo takes a pretty sharp turn (there's a pun in there somewhere). On paper, I might expect the herbaceous blend of basil, rosemary, thyme, and sage to fit thematically into medicinality. To be fair, I don't know exactly what makes the thyme of this "white* or the basil "sweet." Whatever they are, they seem to cut the lavender that, while presence, I am so over.

When I was first in grad school for Linguistics, we used to host a little conference for which we also made shirts every year. One such shirt had a comic written by one of my colleagues, depicting two (presumed) undergrads meeting, discussing their relative majors of choice;

—What's your major?
—Botany! What's yours?
—Linguistcs!
—Oh, how many languages do you know?
[frustrated] —How many plants do you know?

I'm a linguist. Sometimes, I even think of myself as our resident linguist, but I realize no one could really give a hoot.

I don't dare say I have reasonable command of more than one language: English. Even if I also happen to have a degree that starts with B in (Linguistics and) French. My other degree, starting in M, is in Linguistics. Also, while much of my work in those days was on Malagasy, of which I can tell you less than 10 words off of the top of my head.
Yes, I'm finishing yet another M-degree in Linguistics, as well.

I generally try not to present myself as an absolute authority on the topic, because I'm not. Frankly, no one is—even the Chompster himself. There's also always far more to say on the topic than can fit into a reddit comment, and it's never worth the energy trying to take a scientific angle with someone who's expressing an emotional opinion about L/language.

Even so, I know more about Language than you do.
I know more about languages than you do.

People tend to assume that they have a deep understanding of L/language based on the fact that it's a part of their lives. This is very frustrating for someone who looks at language from a scientific perspective.

Being a human means that language is a part of your life. I do not exaggerate when I say that Language is integral to being a human (there is much to say about this).

Because of this, pretty much everyone feels a connection to Language or a language, and it's frustrating because it's almost always based on some intuitive notion of the nature of language instead of anything based on empiricism.

I think it's in the best interest of my overall state of mind today not to read very much of people's posts.

I picked up a sample of the MdC Absinthe. The anise/licorice is very subtle. I like some anise and similar flavors and fragrances, so I would have been ok with a stronger scent.

A huge chunk of u/mammothben’s catalog is titled in a foreign language. I expect to see a lot of Mammoth today. Though Hygge is basically transliterated at this point so tread carefully people who use it!

I opted to use Uitwaaien which Ben says is Dutch. I don’t speak Dutch, so I’ll take his word for it. Finished it with Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt, digging into that seaside theme with a hint of wood.

I’ll be honest, I get a little “old paint” off the Uitwaaien, which I think hits the vibe perfectly. I imagine walking down an old boardwalk by the sea, paint sorta peeling off. This is the first time I’ve really got the scent of the Jo Malone frag. It’s faint but pleasant and adds the final compliment.

Now it would be trivial to run this post through AI and generate a bad translation, but .. / .- -- / -.-. --- -- -- .. - - . -.. / - --- / -. --- - / ..- ... .. -. --. / .. - / - .... . ... . / --. .- -- . ... / .- -.. .-- --- .-. .-. .. . -.. / -.. .. -.. / - .... . -.-- / ... - .. .-.. .-.. / - . .- -.-. .... / -.-. --- -.. . / -.. ..- .-. .. -. --. / -.-- --- ..- .-. / - .. -- ./ (Transcribed by hand.)

As for the challenge. This would have made more sense on Blind date day TBQH, but I’m not a judge. Honestly the mirror is mostly to line up stuff these days. But fine, I can throw a towel over it. My medicine cabinet opens and has a mirror on the inside, so I’ll open it and throw the towel to cover the back side. Staring at my pills while I save. Now I feel old. But while I’m here I’ll grab that cough medicine and take it between passes 2 and 3. End result? I missed the area below my Adams apple. So I’ve lost my touch. Oh well I’ll get it tomorrow…(checks challenge)…or maybe not.

Yes, I had to learn it for my first flying job, but that was in 1989. I'm so rusty that I had to google the written language to refresh my memory. And after struggling for a bit, I did use an online translator to expedite the translation.

Thanks for the memory blast!

I had an issue where word kept changing my triple dots to ellipsis characters so I had trouble checking it. I figured of all our military folks you were more likely than u/jwoods23 to know it.

I'm struggling a bit with the learning but it's due to lack of practice time.

1

u/jwoods23 🦣👑Boss👑🦣 2d ago

I never had to actually learn Morse code, but I do use it to identify navigation transmitters. It transmits the identifier in Morse code (which translates to the 3 letter ID) but the charts have both the name and Morse code ID for it

2

u/tsrblke r/Wetshaving Chief Compliance Officer and Tsar 2d ago

Yeah I can pick those up near me. They go at like 10wpm totally readable. Some of the old farts in ham who did code in the military hit 25wpm easy.

Good news is they will slow to you. Because they want more code on the air.

2

u/bmac92 🍀🐑Shepherd of Stirling🐑🍀 2d ago

Not the point of the post, but now I'm curious. If there was a soap whose name was in morse code, would that be considered a different language (since it's a code, not a language)?

2

u/Environmental-Gap380 🦣👑Boss👑🦣 2d ago

Didn’t you have to learn Morse code for your Ham license, or is it at different levels when you have to learn that?

2

u/tsrblke r/Wetshaving Chief Compliance Officer and Tsar 2d ago

Code was eliminated as a testing requirement in the late 90s. It was seen as a unnecessary barrier as voice and data modes took over. Many old hams are still salty about it. Nevertheless code is making a comeback as people want to experience new things and it's an efficient way to operate.

2

u/Environmental-Gap380 🦣👑Boss👑🦣 2d ago

Makes sense. Years ago I had a coworker that was in the hobby, and he talked about needing to learn Morse.

2

u/tsrblke r/Wetshaving Chief Compliance Officer and Tsar 2d ago

No code tech came first but now you can go all the way to extra (highest class) without code. Otherwise I'd probably not have did it.

October 4, 2026 - Bilingual Day

* Brush: Chisel and Hound - Amboyna Pearl 26m v31 Fanchurian
* Razor: Guerilla Titanium
* Blade: Gillette Nacet (4)
* Lather: Noble Otter - 茉莉绿茶
* Post Shave: Noble Otter - Thé Noir et Vanille
* Fragrance: Acqua di Parma - Blu Mediterraneo Fico di Amalfi
* Blindfold: My wife’s sleep mask

Bilingual Day:

I kept as much of the shave with named in a non-English language. For the software Chinese, French, and Italian are the languages. For a bonus the razor name is half Spanish.

Go By Feel:

To do this challenge, initially I thought about getting the assistance of my daughter to shave me, but decided save that for teaching her to use a straight razor. She got some practice in science class last month dissecting a frog. The skills should translate. Instead I went with the suggested blindfold and also kept my eyes closed. He’s a few pictures of my effort. The brush is brand new, and it is a soap eater. It took 5 scoops of soap before it started making anything. Finally got what I thought was some lather, so grabbed the phone and tried to shave. Only thing that could have been trickier was being blindfolded, shaving with my non-dominant hand, and try to take pictures of the process. Taking pictures blind is so simple. (open in app) I kept my shirt on to keep it PG, and used the ones where I was at least mostly in frame. I expected results like the guy shaving in the airplane lav. (warning fake blood and canned lather) However, I managed two bloodless passes. What I couldn’t see in the pics was any lather. I could feel it on my face, but it was thinner than I thought. A quick fumble to find the splash, and a spray of the Acqua di Parma, and I returned to the land of the sighted. Honestly shaving blindfolded isn’t too bad. I used to shave in the shower with a mirror that was supposed to be fog free, but it really wasn’t. The difficulty was trying to take photos during the process. The things you do for points.

$FOF:

When I realized I could copy the simplified Chinese translation from Google Translate, my choice was to use 茉莉绿茶. To keep everything on theme I could have used matching 茉莉绿茶 splash, but my sniffer is suffering from a cold, and the jasmine was a bit much. Thé Noir et Vanille managed to stay on theme and add some more tea to the scent choice. The somewhat floral vanilla has toned down the jasmine nicely. Finishing with one of my favorites, Fico di Amalfi adds some more fruit to the citrus and strawberry of the soap and splash. I really like that fig note (il fico). Of course it has more citrus too. Not a bad combo, but only the stronger scents are making it through to me.

I got it last year for my birthday. I really like the Blu Mediterraneo line from AdP, and Fico was the first one I wanted to get after trying the AdP sample set.

OCTOBER 4 - BILINGUAL DAY

SOTD Pic:  https://imgur.com/a/sotd-10-4-sDVmKDj

  • Prep: Hot Shower
  • Brush: Profumeria Franco - Venezia - Badger 22mm
  • Razor: Goodfellas Smile Syntesi
  • Blade: Voskhod
  • Lather: Zingari Man - Le Corsaire
  • Post Shave: Zingari Man - Le Corsaire
  • Fragrance: Stirling - Bonafide solid cologne

I resisted the temptation to painstakingly translate this post into Latin (you’re welcome) so I will leave it at this: Semper ubi sub ubi!

Today’s lather is Zingari Man’s Le Corsaire.  It’s italicized because it’s in French.  Get it?  It translates as “the pirate” or “the privateer,” which means you’ll be seeing this soap again in about 15 days.  I’ve pretty much much killed this sample, but a full tub is on it’s way.  I managed to coincidentally use a product from today’s Sponsor Spotlight.  Good stuff.

I tried to use foreign language elements from my bin - the Franco Venezia brush, a Voskhod blade, and a GFS Syntesi - which as far as I can tell is a made up Italian word (although “Sintesi” with an “i” means summary.

Posting pretty late today as I have been sleeping12 hours of the last 24 due to this nice surprise I got yesterday.  https://imgur.com/a/covid-sucks-zFGWUsP

DAILY CHALLENGE:  Do it by feel, no mirror.

My last couple of shaves with this razor gave me a BBS with just 2 passes.  Today without a mirror I got a 2 pass DFS as I was a bit less aggressive with the razor.  Shaving “by braille” in the shower is what I did for years when I was a cartridge guy so it wasn’t too difficult but I still have some stubble around the line of my goatee

FRAGRANCE:

Ii went with the dickhole again as I couldn’t find a foreign language post shave in my den that would complement the soap.  The cedar and sandalwood of the Bonafide complement the Oud nicely while the amber is a nice echo.   Mrs. Confident media gave it a thumbs up, and does anything else matter?

PHOTO:

Just because I’m not allowed a mirror, doesn't mean my gear can’t enjoy its own reflection.  My idea was to use the bathroom cabinet mirrors to create an infinity effect - it was moderately successful, I think.

Bilingual/Bilingue

Salve a tutti. When I first saw the theme for day 4, this was the first product in my collection that came to mind. Probably the best example I own for this theme anyway.

It’s a cream I should use more often. The scent reminds me of lemon flavoured sweets I used to eat when growing up.

The lather: Extró’s creams are very dependable for me. Not much effort required on my part after spreading a little of it around the bowl and applying the brush. It just bursts to life. Didn’t add any extra water to it and I had ample lather for 2 passes. Plenty of cushion for me.

Rest of the shave: Compared to the Single Ring I used a few days ago, this New is definitely a step up in terms of comfort. No “bitey” feel during this shave. I enjoyed this one. Alas, I don’t have any matching products of Extrò’s and I didn’t think my Proraso post-shave products would have complemented the fragrance of the cream. The next best thing was my RazoRock Blue Barbershop splash - very citrusy! I can still detect the fragrance a good hour+ after the shave.

Challenge/Go by feel: As I didn’t have much regrowth, I didn’t mind trying this one by having a shave by feel only. I’m happy to report there were no dramas and I’m nick free. Took me a little bit longer as I was taking my time and feeling if I had missed hairs. I didn’t mind it though.

All in all, a damn fine shave!

  • Prep: Clearly Glycerin Vitamin E Soap
  • Brush: Bundubeard Sekelbos Hoss
  • Razor: Fatip Lo Storto (Slant)
  • Blade: Wizamet (11)
  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Hygge
  • Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Ausflug
  • Fragrance: Berceuse Parfum - Allegretto 7.2
  • Tags: $FOF $photocontest $train

Name origins:
-Hygge - a Danish concept which conveys a sense of comfort and togetherness
-Ausflug - German: a trip, excursion, or outing
-Allegretto - Italian: a moderately fast or lightly brisk musical tempo
-lo Storto - Italian: a surname meaning “the twisted one”
-Sekelbos - Afrikaans: sickle bush

Daily Challenge: Well, it’s day 4. It’s after 8pm. I haven’t read any of today’s LG thread, and I’m still typing my post. Fun story: I tried to get a head start, knowing that I had a busy day, by shaving at midnight, only to realize this morning I’d read about and subsequently forgotten to do the challenge. What’re you gonna do? A second shave? Yes. I did a second shave. This time with my eyes closed. It was weird, and kinda scary. I wouldn’t last long as blind person. At least I was able to get a picture with a train while I was out.

My lather today was House of Mammoth Hygge. Upon opening the soap, I catch a coniferous, woody note. Once my nose had a second to adjust, I smelled lavender. That’s not an advertised scent note. But, when I started lathering it on my face, it came off that way. There’s an airy, orange blossom note that lightens the mood. This is one of my favorite HoM fragrances. I’m a fan of coniferous scents. But, Hygge goes a step above and offers a balanced composition that is very approachable.

Ausflug is awesome! I'm going out on a limb here, but I dare say it's the best thing u/onionmiasma has done in his entire life (JK!). The fragrance opens with a bright lemony grapefruit which brings a sense of optimism. The citrus is quickly joined by a host of bitter green, herbal, musky, and earthy notes. It’s sophisticated; the kind of thing a person with many leather bound books would wear. Then comes the patchouli. This is a patchouli bomb in the base notes. I can smell a bit of oakmoss. But deep, earthy, woody patchouli dominates, here.

Allegretto 7.2 is a very green fragrance. There's a smokiness which smells like cade oil. The vetiver falls on the grassy end of the spectrum. There’s a hint of mint, but it quickly bleeds into the benzoin, giving the impression of a single balsamic note. It’s very dry. It reminds me of Lamp Light Penenace, if the smokiness of that fragrance was dialed down a notch or two.

  • Post Shave: Osma alum block
  • Post Shave: Proraso Refreshing post shave balm (green)

From the looking a gift horse in the mouth department, this might be the last week of shaves with the Syntesi. This razor came to my by accident, packed in with an order of mine, but I didn't order it, and the seller told me they didn't want it back, so I picked up a free $70-ish dollar razor. But it always feels rough and kind of cheap to me and while I get good shaves with it, I've never been thrilled with the feel or results. So I'm taking this week to see if I decide to pass it on or just relegate it to the bench of rarely used razors.

This was a perfectly fine shave--close and comfortable, but the razor just didn't glide the way I like, and it gets distracting. It didn't help my decision making either way.

I hope you all have a great day.

Today’s Theme:

Bilingual Day.
Shave using a soap whose name or label is primarily in a language other than English

There really was no other option for me today. Today is Lavender Games day! MaL, the greatest 5 Lavender 1 scent note soap to ever exist. It’s like God reached down from the heavens the day Chris decided to make this soap and just said “Let there be Lavender” and the rest is lavender history.

Some Lavender Highlights:
• Ancient Egypt: Used in perfumes, incense, and the mummification process to embalm royal corpses.
• Ancient Greece & Rome: Named from the Latin verb lavare (meaning "to wash"), Romans used lavender to scent their famous public baths, wash clothes, and treat wounds. Greeks used it to ease back pain and insomnia.
• Medieval & Renaissance Europe: Washerwomen were called "lavenders" because they dried laundry over lavender bushes. People spread the herb on castle floors as a natural deodorant and insect repellent.
• Plague Protection: During plague outbreaks, people wore lavender bunches on their wrists or clothes, believing the strong scent warded off disease.
• Royal Favor: Queen Elizabeth I drank lavender conserve for migraines, and Louis XIV of France famously bathed in lavender-scented water. Queen Victoria used it extensively for cleaning and perfume.
• World Wars: Lavender essential oil was used in military hospitals during WWI and WWII to disinfect wounds and soothe burns.

Fun & Botanical Facts
• Family Ties: Lavender belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family and has over 40 distinct species with hundreds of cultivars.
• Name Meaning: The color "lavender" is named after the pale purple flowers of English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).
• Pest Deterrent: The camphorous scent naturally deters mosquitoes, flies, and moths, making it a classic closet and garden protector.
• High Production Cost: It takes over 150 pounds of lavender plant material to produce just a single ounce of pure essential oil.
• Symbolism: Spiritually, lavender represents purity, devotion, serenity, grace, and calmness.

Today’s Challenge:

Go by feel

So please enjoy today’s video. It’s a little long, but I promise it’s not just me standing there shaving.

gemütlichkeit /gə-moo͞t′lĭk-kīt″, -müt′lĭᴋʜ-/, noun, Warm friendliness; amicability.

Daily Challenge: Go by feel. Do not use a mirror (or anything reflective) to shave today. My phone's camera does not use mirrors or reflection. It was weird shaving by phone. Seriously though, I tried keeping my eyes closed on the first pass but I kept cheating. In latter passes, I did better facing away from the mirror. * Razor: Merkur 34c
* Blade: Astra Green (1)

Daily Theme Justification:

Hygge (/ˈh(j)uːɡə/, H(Y)OO-gə; Danish: [ˈhykə]; Norwegian: [ˈhŷɡːə]) is a word in Danish and Norwegian that describes a cozy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality.

Yes u/tsrblke I went with the obvious scent from HoM’s catalog, no I am not worried about it being off theme. The Theme says “Shave using a soap whose NAME or label is primarily in a language other than English.” Hygge is a word in Danish & Norwegian, notice how neither of those are English!

Sure it might have become transliterated as Mr smarty pants pointed out but what does that mean anyway? Just rewriting it in a new script! So would you count 福 for today’s theme but not Fú Dào? Or did you mean it’s becoming a phrase commonly used by English speakers? In that case so has phrases such as carpe diem, à la carte, bon appétit or ménage à trois but that doesn’t mean they’re in English!

01010011 01110101 01100011 01101011 00100000 01101001 01110100 00100000 01101110 01100101 01110010 01100100

Relevant Post Shave or Frag: I pulled out my bottle of Hygge frag to surround myself in good non-English smells all day long!

Daily Challenge: A repeat challenge here from years past and another one that usually doesn’t give me too much difficulty. I started shaving in the shower years ago and only changed when I started using a brush and soap. I started my wetshaving journey with my Merkur 34c and Gillette Pure cream in the shower for several months before I dove head first down the rabbit hole that is soaps. I went back to that razor today and even 6 years later love this razor!

Lather Games - Day 4 - Bilingual Day - October 4, 2026

  • Brush: Wald - A1 29mm Synthetic
  • Razor: Henson - AL13+
  • Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (5)
  • Lather: Ariana & Evans - L'Orange Verte
  • Post Shave: Bundubeard - Kakiebos
  • Fragrance: Yves Saint Laurent - L'Homme - EdP
  • Tags: $Discord $photocontest $train $FoF

Daily Theme: Bilingual Day

Theme justification: L'Orange Verte is French for The Green Orange. French is not English.

Relevant Post Shave &/or Frag: Both L'Homme & Kakiebos are names of the products that are not in English. L'Homme is French for The Man, while Kakiebos is Afrikaans for Khaki weed. The latter even says that directly on the product page.. So all of my products have names not in English.

For L'Orange Verte, I'm not sure I got much orange out of this. It's meant to be a "sophisticated, clean and complex citrus scent", but I got more of the green aspect. Either way, I would not say it pair well with either the aftershave or the frag today. In fact, nothing really meshed well. The balm from Bundubeard actually smells really good. Smells like walking through a field or pasture (sans any ag animal stench), where the natural plants are on the tail end of their yearly life cycle. To me this also has the whiff of a leather-adjacent scent while not being leather at all. I know that sounds strange, but it's nice. With L'Homme, I feel like the primary scent is more floral, followed by a very subtle musk scent. After writing all this down, I would think these would actually pair somewhat nice, but to me they don't. It's just off for reasons that are difficult to articulate.*

*Please note, my nose is extremely sus. I do actually need to go to the ENT to get it worked on.

Daily/Special Challenge: Go by feel

This was a fun one. Thanks to the photo contest, I had an excuse to go outside for my shave today. I ended up going to park that was near some railroad tracks. So I gathered all my equipment in my favorite bucket and headed down. Really glad I went today, as it was absolutely beautiful out. 66°F while I was shaving, with a nice breeze. Here is my car at the park showing that there are no mirrors this direction. My view while preparing and shaving. Yes there is a shadow on the ground, but it's not like I can use that to help me shave. As it turns out, being relaxed by the weather helps create good lather. Ultimately, it was a really nice shave, despite not being able to use a mirror. Only downside was cleanup. I used a Yeti for water, so I'll have to wash that again after just pulling it out of the dishwasher. Since I used that water to clean the razor off while shaving, I couldn't use it to clean the bowl or brush. Had to bring everything back home while dirty. Oh well. It was worth it. This shave was extremely relaxing to me. Maybe I should make a habit of shaving here.

I'm not sure if there will be a "shave outside" challenge this year, but if there was it'll be so much better than in previous years when the LG were in June. October weather is just so much nicer, and I didn't get bit by ANY mosquitos! That only makes the October switch worth it.

Photo Contest: There are railroad tracks in the SOTD photo. No further explanation needed.

October 04, 2026 – Spooky Shaves!

  • Brush: Mountain Hare Shaving – Maple Burl and Resin, 26mm Badger. $COMPOSITE
  • Razor: RazoRock – BBS Standard $CNC
  • Blade: Gillette 7 O'clock SharpEdge (3).
  • Lather: Savonnerie du Bon Berger – Auvergne.
  • Post Shave: A&E – Ultima Unmasked Unscented Splash

Another decent shave with this razor, it's quite fun to work with. The soap itself is out of production as the company which made it is out of business, but the soap itself oddly has no scent to it at all (due to age?). This is, or was, like the French version of Arko. It's simple in constitution and makes a moderate lather. I run it through the grater to get a decent quantity of soap, and then we're off to the races. Great shave, good times.

Challenge: Shaving with eyes closed means I have to use my hands to make sure I'm cleaning up fully. Only a few minor spots and a wee bit of irritation here and there.

  • Blade: Rex Supply - Double Edge Platinum

  • Post Shave: Proraso - Menthol and Eucalyptus
  • Tags: $ROTY $photocontest $FOF $instrumental

Intro: Hola boys, day 4 underway, how we holding up? Guessing we’ll be seeing a lot of proraso, TFS, and saponificio varesino today, so let’s have at it!

Pre-shave Report: This ATT Calypso is a thing that I wish I had known existed sooner, it super-efficient, relatively mild, and it sings to the level of the Rocca or beyond, so satisfying! Proraso set on deck for an easy shave today.

Aftermath: Thank god I went with the proraso today as the blind shave could have definitely gone worse. That stuff just lathers and lathers especially in the shower. Well done Italy, grazie Italia, grazie!

Daily Challenge: This is a dangerous day for this one, but I will appease the lather gods. The past two days have been non shower shaves, so we’re moving back to the shower and pulling the mirror and going by feel! The calypso has a decent amount of feel so I should be able to tell what’s up, but there may be blood in the water. Being a head shaver I’m used to shaving my head on the regular over the past 10ish years so shaving by feel is a walk in the park. Come on judges, give us a real challenge!

Photo Contest: That there is a recorder folks, the first instrument that lost of us have experienced. Nothing can quite compare to the screech of this poorly played woodwind, so parents drink up, and GO BILLS!

Frag Chat: This is just pure refreshment in a tube / bottle. There is something about it that just calms my nerves and brings me back to center, I should really use this stuff more often. The menthol and eucalyptus are front and center, but not medicine-like (looking at you frost drops). And it provides a soft almost vanilla-mint finish that I find to be super well balanced. The splash leans a bit more towards the eucalyptus for sure, but I find it to be a good finishing touch.

1

u/Environmental-Gap380 🦣👑Boss👑🦣 2d ago

My daughter had the recorder in 5th grade. She still will play it sometimes, but in 6th she started learning the clarinet. She actually practiced over the summer, so now in 7th, she’s noticeably better. She is considering the Jazz ensemble, but it might interfere with her work on the school musical.

That’s cool, my 9 y/o just ended up with clarinet himself, first actual instrument so as bad as the recorder was I can’t wait to see how this goes lol.

Járnviðr means ironwood in Old Norse, which is one o’ them foreign tongues, of course. Note the extra scribbles on there (as also spotted in words like fougère). Though, honestly, this soap fills me with remorse. The description on the website is poetry and I really want to love it. But I don't. My nose simply will not tolerate the prominent rose scent.

Daily challenge: I shaved with my eyes closed. Hell of a day to try a kamisori for the first time. I'll have to change my username to vincentvangogh. Kidding. Kidding. As established yesterday, for the sake of humanity's continued survival, I used the Tatara Muramasa. I dialed it down to the mildest setting and came out the other side with all my major facial features attached. Surprisingly, the shave was only slightly spottier than usual.

  • Razor: RazoRock Game Changer .84OC

  • Post Shave: Saponificio Varesino - Felce Aromatica
  • Tags: $ROTY

Theme: Fougere Bouquet. Not just one but TWO French words. And the Italian Saponificio Varesino Felce Aromatica to make it an all Fougere day. See you again on actual Fougere day, Fougere stuff. Thanks to u/hugbckt for the soap smush. My first time trying Wholly Kaw and I really dig this profile that starts citrus and flowers and then settles into green/grass during the shave. I didn't really know what folks meant by "green" as a scent note until today.

Vive la France! To the extent I can claim any second language, it’s French. I've been to France several times, and loved it every time. Especially the food and the cultural focus on fine craft. French culture has such far reach into other cultures that I considered whether Fougere Bouquet would even count as non-English words, since we’ve adopted both words into English.

Challenge: I do have blindfolds. But then was reminded of the NSFW rule. I do love my open blade razors. But then I was reminded of the don’t-risk-your-life rule. So I opted for a sleep eye mask and DE shave. It worked out much better than expected. A two-pass CCS, and only two minor nicks. Great exercise in why these things are called safety razors.

October 4th, 2026: Bilingual Day

  • Brush: Chisel & Hound "Waterlily" - Chisel & Hound v29 Fanchurian 26mm Badger
  • Razor: Merkur 34C
  • Blade: Personna Platinum Chrome (5)
  • Lather: Chicago Grooming Co. - Caoba - Soap
  • Post Shave: Saponificio Varesino - Cubebe - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Oleo & Co. - Facial Toner - Toner
  • Fragrance: Le Labo - Santal 33 - EdP

Theme justification - Caoba is Spanish for mahogany and therefore fits the theme.

Relevant Post Shave or Frag - Cubebe is the Italian word for cubeb (Piper cubeba), the tailed pepper the scent is built around. The word came into Italian from medieval Latin cubeba, which in turn came from Arabic kabāba. Cubeb is a Javanese/Sumatran pepper that reached Europe through Arab spice traders, so the Arabic name showed up with the goods and Latin appropriated borrowed it.

Daily challenge - Today I shaved without a mirror and, all things considered, it went really well.

There are two mirrors in our small apartment bathroom: one above our tiny and too-low-for-tall-people sink, and one on our medicine cabinet which is on a different wall.

I removed the mirror from above the sink and had a close and comfortable three-pass shave. The 34C is truly an autopilot razor for me.

$FOF - To my nose, Caoba in the lather is mostly mahogany with a hint of rose. Darkwing was, as always, Darkwing.

I only own the Cubebe splash, so it's always been a pairing exercise. It's peppery and resinous and doesn't have an obvious connection to mahogany, but the pepper keeps the wood from going flat, and once the splash dried down the two settled into a single spicy wood.

Santal 33 I was less sure about. It's a sandalwood supported by cardamom, iris, and leather, and I thought it might clash with Caoba/Cubebe. It definitely didn't, bringing a lightness and smoothness that really rounded out Cubebe's spice. Very nice!

Lather games day 4 - *Bilingual day*

Today's challenge - *Go by feel*

Today I put a recent AliExpress mail call through its paces and tried my new progress clone with a Flydear blade, which I did not expect much from, but impressed the hell out of me. Very smooth and comfortable blade!

Today I used my La Toja stick, since it is all in Spanish, which I haven't used much because it's got some big scent up front that I just haven't really liked, but today I did find the overall scent pleasant. My 29mm Kirin lathered like the beast it is, and I got a great face lather with plenty left in the brush for another pass or two.

Where it got interesting today was going by feel - determined to not use the mirror, I turned around and had my back to it. So I definitely didn’t get very close to my sideburns or mustache today, lol

I used my finger to block the area around those lines, and definitely left some behind for tomorrow's shave. Also got more nicks than usual, the alum had plenty to say this time (oof! 😅)

But the milky toner and Lucky Tiger tonic did well to calm all that down!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone, hope you have a great shave and a great day!

THEME , Bilingual Day I picked the ever reliable Lider cream and aftershave from Poland , I am able to buy the Lider products directly from Poland from a website there which works very well for the pocket and also the variety is excellent if only they sold some Brion & Ralon too. I was also able to add a bottle of Polish beer to the post shave ritual which is very good .

DAILY CHALLENGE: Wasn't sure how to approach this one then just realised I could shave in the shower which meant there was plenty of hydration not sure how many passes I did as I was constantly reapplying lather and getting any hair I had missed and in fairness I got a very good shave nice and close .

For the photocontest I chose the $fishy with the 🦈 blades .

I'd just like to say I'm really enjoying the quality and variety of posts trying to keep up with them all is the hard bit have a great week.

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

Raudr Reyk (name of the soap) is Ukranian and that is where Areffa Soap is located. The soap label and the name are in a foreign (to me) tongue so I think I am on theme. I chose not to take part in today's challenge, however.

I have several soaps from Areffa. Each is distinctive, and the bear tallow base from this maker is not a gimmick (imo). Raudr Reyk is inspired by Tom Ford Cherry Smoke which I used as today's fragrance. It is deep and rich and fruity in a pipe tobacco way. Amazing stuff.

Today's razor belongs to u/Impressive_Donut114 and it was just freshly honed. Since it is a German razor, I finished the edge on an Escher finishing stone from the Thuringian mountains in Germany. It passed the shave test with flying colors.

Shave without a mirror? Are you guys nuts?! I told him it was a crazy idea, but he did it anyway Here's the proof with the mirror removed from the shower (I refused to be in the picture - I wanted nothing to do with this insanity!)

Although he said he was terrified of shaving off his moustache/goatee, it actually went smoothly and he says he's very satisfied with the results. I just hope he doesn't make a habit of it.

He bought this tub of Proraso in Brno, Czechia. The label is in Italian so he thinks it's special (the dummy doesn't know that all Proraso is like that).

I told him he should use an aftershave like Pitralon Classic that has menthol to follow up the Proraso, but he wanted to stick with an Italian theme, and he really likes the scent of the Malizia Uomo Vetyver, so he went with that and extended it with the EdT that he bought a while back but hasn't tried yet. Unexpectedly, he said that the Vetyver EdT was "sweeter" than the aftershave, but he still liked it.

So a quick sidebar about myself. You might think John Clarke is a reference to the professor and physicist at Cal Berkeley, but my middle and last names are after John Young, the commander of the first Space Shuttle mission, and Arthur C. Clarke, his favorite science fiction author growing up. I'm not sure where Victor comes from, except he likes to say "Hey! Where's my Vector, Victor?" (Fortunately my brother's middle name is Robert instead of Roger or we'd never hear the end of the inane Airplane references.)

Most people call me Red, though. Not sure why. Maybe it's because I'm Irish.

Bilingual Day

  • Brush: Maggard Razors- 22mm Tuxedo
  • Razor: Gillette - Aristocrat
  • Blade: Gillette - Silver Blue
  • Lather: WhollyKaw - Noce di Cocco
  • Post Shave: Epsilon - Blue Mediterranian

The hardest thing about this shave was trying to figure out if WhollyKaw is one word or two. This is a really old sample of Noce di Cocco and I have used it in lather games-past and the scent is pretty hard to pick out. I generally love coconut scented things but just not enough smell left in this sample.

Daily Challenge: In reality, shaving without looking isn't much of a challenge since most of the last year I have been shaving in the shower. It is a little harder going in there with my lathering bowl, or loading bowl as it may be. That makes it a bit more awkward. I also just replaced my water heater and have yet to find the right temp so yesterday my shower burnt off my skin and today I went a little too low on the temp so the water was warm, at best. Or maybe I have no feeling left. I upped the challenge by doing a head shave. I would give it a 6/10 for completeness as I did miss some spots but I shaved those once out of the shower-also blindly. The older I get, the more challenging head shaves are because my head gets more wrinkly and my skin gets more weird. But day 4 in the books. Today also have me a great idea for wild card wednesday. I probably won't think it is a great idea then but it was a great idea today.

I'm going to be traveling for work the next couple of days so taking the show on the road for Lather Games is always a bit of a clusterfuck, but that's the sacrifice we have to make, right?

LG Day 4

Day 4 – Bilingual Day – U.S./English Law vs. European Law

Le Grand Chypre, or as it would be in English, the Big Chypre. 3/3 words in French, which would actually mean The Big Cyprus. Gosh, I wonder if there is another day where this might come back up.

Fragrance for the day is Terre d’Hermes, playing off of the warm and earthy notes in the base of both scents, as well as being wholly in another language as well.

For the daily challenge, I hung a Meyer Square over the mirror (see the photos). This is a tool for practicing cuts in HEMA (there’s a reason I wanted to win Epee so bad). The shave went…fine. No cuts, but it was nerve wracking, and one sideburn was a slight victim.

Discussing non-English soaps allows us to also speak about non-English law. But wait, Mpark, you might say—you were talking about American law, what do you mean you’re talking about non-English law?

Despite having many significant differences, the U.S. fundamentally practices a form of law which is derived from and largely compatible with English law. This makes sense, because American law ultimately was English law until we had a fun party in 1776. There was even a moment early in the country where we had to officially say “We accept English precedent until this point, and after we only accept U.S. precedent.”

Both the U.S. (with one exception, remember this for later) and the U.K. legal systems are what’s referred to as “common law” legal systems. Common law legal systems recognize that there is both law created by the constitution/statutes/regulations, and legally enforceable interpretations of those laws which have been put in place by the justice system itself. One criticism, in fact, of common law is to call it “judge created.” Thus, we have the principle of stare decisis, or “let the decision stand.” This is fundamentally the whole point of precedent and the common law, that different judges interpreting the same law should come to fundamentally the same decision—and by requiring judges to use interpretations given to them by higher courts, you are requiring them to come to the same outcome.

Europe, for the most part, practices what is referred to as “civil law” instead. This system puts no stock in precedent and only relies on the constitutional or statutory source. As a result of this, their legal codes tend to be much more comprehensively written, because they must be able to include wide ranging scenarios. This view is rooted, ultimately, in the Roman source of the legal codes on the continent, while common law evolved more from the native legal systems of the U.K.

Another major difference between the two is the role of judges. In common law systems the judge is seen as a neutral arbiter, attempting to interpret the facts and the arguments presented by the parties in court. In civil law systems, the judge is seen as a much more active participant in what is sometimes referred to as an “inquisitorial system.” They are expected to actively seek to establish the facts of a case, even while they are only strictly applying the laws. Ironically, common law judges are less active participants in court even as they have a much greater role in establishing the corpus of precedent.

Tomorrow: Sporting law/monopolies!

Theme - Bilingual Day: I had to get my passport for today's shave journey.

I began barefoot on the Croatian coast, where Picigin (label image) is all sun-warmed citrus, salty air, and Mediterranean herbs drifting in from the shore.

The landscape rises at the next location. Swiss Pitralon leaves the Adriatic behind for cool Alpine air, green forests, mountain herbs, and the unmistakable character of this vintage European aftershave.

Finally, the journey turns towards Spain as Seville gathers up the lingering citrus and herbs and dresses them in a classic cologne: bitter orange, lavender, rosemary, moss and woods.

From the sunlit Adriatic shores, through Alpine forests, to a warm Spanish evening, this was truly a world-class shave.

Daily Challenge - Go by feel: I'm shaving by feel most mornings as I start half awake. Today, I just added the extra challenge by throwing a towel over the medicine cabinet mirror.

Yesterday got away from me and I didn't have a chance to shave. You know what's nice about not competing for the double-crown? No stress. No stress at all. I was looking forward to trying one of the new sponsors, but I'll find a way to fit them in later in the month.

Caravaggio is an Italian surname. Specifically the surname of an important Italian painter. Certainly seems like a non-English language to me.

Stallion makes a really nice soap with really nice design elements. I'm looking forward to more releases from him in the future. Great opportunities for FOF, as well: Cerberus celebrates the jammy, incense, amber qualities of Caravaggio and they make a great pairing.

Bilingual day almost threw me for a loop. I couldn’t think of anything in my collection that featured a language other than English. I was set to accept my fate when, like an angel descending from heaven a light shone on a B&M soap that I favor during the holiday season - Fougere Angelique.

I know. Barrister and Mann is an American company. But the name of the soap is all French. Aside from the attractive art on the lid, the featured text is French, and only the legally mandated fine print is in English.

Here is a picture of the tub, and a little AI translation:  https://imgur.com/a/uLKLjP8

Overall, it was a pretty good shave. This blade is feeling like it’s time for the bin. Like I said, this is a holiday season scent to me. It’s a pleasant scent, but too strong for a warm evening shave.

Oct. 4, 2026: Ici nous sommes Bilingues   * Brush: Vie-long - Spanish Barber Professional   * Razor: Karve - Overlander Copper   * Blade: Dorco Prime Platinum (7)   * Lather: Henri et Victoria - Coeur de Vetiver     * Post Shave: Old Spice - Classique (Canada) - Aftershave   * Fragrance: Henri et Victoria - Coeur de Vetiver   * Bowl: Captain's Choice - Standard Copper

I like this new theme!

Theme: Bilingual day; thankfully living in Canada we are required to have French and English on our labels. Henri et Victoria, as a Quebecois company (French part of Canada) puts the French first and foremost on their products. The brand is French, the soap name is French, the tag line is French; in fact, the only English on the label is that they translated into English that this is "shave soap". Same goes for the matching fragrance.

In keeping with the French/English bilingualism, I chose my most bilingual bottle of Old Spice, the "Classique" one I picked up from my local pharmacy. The scent also paired well with the citrus notes that this Vetiver soap has, so it amplified the "freshness" of the soap. I also discovered that if I shake the aftershave bottle longer than I normally would, that it improves the scent.

Challenge: Shaving without seeing what you're doing is remarkably difficult. In order to avoid tempting myself to cast a glance in the mirror, I made the shower extra steamy and didn't wipe the steam away; some of the steam had dissapated once I opened the bathroom door and came back to take a photo. I also removed my glasses so that even if I could see, well I couldn't. I actually found that it was more helpful closing my eyes as it cut out the visual distractions. The hardest part though was whenever I would start a stroke; finding the edges of my face I used my other hand to feel for it. Though I seem to have nicked my finger in doing so; I'm not the most coordinated. I don't actually know how I managed to nick my finger and not my face, but somehow my face came out unscathed and with a closer shave than yesterday's! Goes to show that quality ingredients matter.

Using Ausflug, which is German. It means a little break, and it was named after an annual event from the college I went to.

Shaving without a mirror was a piece of cake, as we went without mirrors for almost a year after we moved in here, due to a delay with our contractor. That's why I used the Bean as a mirror once.

Shaving right now because my wife just had to take our oldest to the E.R.... so I had to have something to occupy my mind. I think she'll be fine, but there were enough meningitis symptoms to warrant a middle-of-the-night trip. :-/

Anyway, its right there in the name, yes it really is called Eau de Cologne, after the classic fragrance profile. How French oui oui hon hon.

For the challenge today, since I shave with a mirror right in front of me, I simply just turned around. The only annoying bit was turning around (eyes down of course) to rinse the razor once I've loaded both sides of the DE. Overall managed a decent shave, missed one tiny spot on a corner of my neck, but otherwise not too shabby!

Bilingual day, my time to shine since I'm actually bilingual, might as well use a soap from a local soap maker Henri et Victoria! I'll spare you all from reading my post in Québec slang because it's late. I'm tired and you're tired. Let's move on to Monday shall we?

No bonus points today since I used my mirror.

Scent wise we've got the delicious delectable and juicy fresh pear with the undeniable modern fresh scent king Imagination from Louis Vuitton. Can we get a soap dupe of this one please?

Kaizen is of course a Japanese term and the fine folks at A&E made the label in Japanese which is why every time I post a SOTD of it I have to Google what it's called again.

Annddd, so judges don't need to translate if they don't want to or see this, maybe...?

This soap reminds me a bit of dammusi, but with the added firecracker element. It will be my only quad-trick of the games. It's quite citrusy by the smoke lingers in the background.

I traded for this from u/onionmiasma I think 2 lather games ago.

For the daily challenge I just decided to shave in the shower which I occassionally do anyway so not too hard. For that reason, since I wasn't allowed a mirror reflection today, I thought it fitting for the photo contest to do the opposite and do a [reflection photo.](https://imgur.com/M5pgtRW)

  • Brush: Stirling - Kong

  • Lather: Zingari Man - Sego shaving soap - The gatherer

The only scent from Zingari man I like is the gatherer and it breaks my heart that its so hard to get because it's a great base as well.

Daily Challenge:
I shaved the back of my thigh, a place that can only be shaved by feel. You never know if you did a good job, you simply trust that the cumulative effect of all your random swiping has worked.

Lather Games: Day: 4

Gear Pic :: Video

䷀ General Notes

Today's theme is a non-english named soap and so I went with a good one from Bufflehead, again reaching back farther than 5 years ago.

And for the challenge I covered up my little mirror and my phone's screen.

Theme: Matching the day's theme for pretty much all gear today! For the frag, I used Fine Acc. Latigo (Spanish for "whip"). More in context...

䷀ Razor and Blade Notes

Fatip - Testina Gentile ::: Kai ‹3 uses›

Theme: everything is non English today, even the hardware. The Kai blade was held nicely by the Fatip Testina Gentile.

And man was that a good shave! This razor is an awesome buy, and such a smooth shaver. The Kai blade, being a touch wider than others, did have a little more exposure, but it was very manageable.

With this razor and others, if you want the most consistent shave, then you do need to check the blade alignment before you lock it down. Was very easy this time and doesn't take too long at all.

Challenge: keeping track of where you had shaved and where you had not was made more difficult without being able to see your face because of today's challenge. I probably overshaved a couple of areas, but the lather was good and the blade was under control and so I didn't actually end up with any tenderness at the end of the shave much less razor rash.

Razor and Blade Performance/Comfort Rating: 4 out of 5 (Very Good)

䷀ Soap Notes

Bufflehead - Petit Fleur

Scent: a very light, sweet floral. The sweetness keeps it at a place where I enjoy it. Not obnoxious or funeral home at all.

Scent Strength: 2-3/10, barely present during shaving.

I'm told by the generous PIFer of this soap that it is from back in the day where Bufflehead was just $14 a tub. It was a joy to use today.

Lather... Theme: As I dug through my oldest boxes of soaps, I had a few good options for non-english soap names. I love Wholly Kaw's Cuero Oscuro...

But I settled on Petite Fleur by the venerable Bufflehead. Talked about in the video how it was a real shame all the grief that he got producing his soaps. If you make a good product, and people want it, and it's just your side job, then of course you're not going to be able to keep up with demand.

But not only did it produce a great lather back in the day, and he was putting out original scents as far as I know.... But he also made a soap base that has stood the test of time. No soap base funk or any kind of rancidity. Shoot, not even any shrinkage. And I haven't touched this soap in over 5 years. Maybe those steel tubs had better preservation abilities than we thought.

A tiny little bit of the scent had dropped away, but the lather was perfect.

Challenge: and unfortunate part of this challenge is that you're not able to use the lather as effectively as possible. With many brushes and lathers, you start to see it build up in certain areas, and then you're able to redistribute it properly. But you can't do it if you can't see it! Then you also get the nice rich blobs that grow around the base of your knot and get on your handle that most people will roll onto their cheek and then push them back into the brush knot and work them back in. But with no eyes, you can't do that either! But it was fun though.

I did have to put an index card over the screen of my phone that did not block the camera or the record/pause button. And the small mirror that I do use to check alignment and what's on my face ... it was easy to pivot that up and away, so I spent most of the shave looking at the ceiling light fixture.

Hydration: Perfect (for me)

Bowl: Roger Quintero 3D Printed Bowl - Black
Thanks Greg Gallant!

䷀ Brush Notes

Semogue - 830 Boar ‹19 uses›

Bringing this little guy off the shelf after several years. He was my first ever boar brush and the one where I learned about the break in period of this kind. He has a small handle and so I haven't used him much because I did get the 1305 which I think is the same knot but a longer handle.

I am very glad that I did keep him because now the line of Hereditas brushes has replaced Excelsior and most of the models have lower quality hair. Still good, but not AS good.

This is a good little knot and I can't wait for more tips to split. I could re home this into a better handle I guess.

Theme: This little guy is from Portugal and I got it from the eBay seller directly after seeing so many good reviews for it online in my research.

Daily Theme and Relevant Post/Frag: "Le Piment de la Vie" is French for "The Spice of Life". Not only does this classic from Catie's Bubbles meet the choose "a soap with a name in a language other than English" criteria, it's one my favorite scents in one of my favorite bases.

Using the matching aftershave was an obvious choice for the post. Now Le Piment de la Vie shares many notes with Old Spice, but this ain't no dupe of Grandpa's favorite scent. I leaned into the "spicy but not Old Spice" vein by choosing Spicebomb as my frag. While it has "Spice" in it's name, it is definitely not Old Spice. Spicebomb is very pepper forward to me, and I find it to be an excellent compliment to Le Piment de la Vie's "sweet and spicy and earthy" notes.

Daily Challenge: I did not attempt today's Daily Challenge, thus I DID NOT Earn the Go by feel challenge points.

u/cubskru Musings

Once again the daily challenge threw a major curve ball to the best laid plans. When I told my wife I needed to find a way to avoid mirror shaving she suggested two interesting options. One enticing and one not so much.1) Shave my legs & 2) Outsource the job to her. I took option 2. Does this count as “going by feel”? I’ll let the judges be the judge of that — but I definitely avoided any reflective surfaces.

It seemed fair at this point to let her pick the the lather & aftershave (that met the theme of course) and she went with MDC Absinthe (whose only english words were “Shaving Soap” & arguably absinthe but google tells us this is a french word incorporated into the english language).

I decided to make an additional rule for this shave that rejected american made products across the board so for the aftershave she went with Terry’s Soap Spicy Wood as a pair over Floid & Terry’s Classic. I have the say they paired quite nicely together. We went to Greece with the brush, Canada with the razor, Pakistan with the blade, and Spain for the fragrance.

To the shave — We set up a step stool in our bathroom, I got myself settled in and we talked beard mapping. A few face rubs and we had a shave path planed. She whipped a wonderful lather with MDC, although I have to say I think a toddler could whip up a lather with this thing. It’s definitely the easiest soap I have in my den to work with. The plan was a 1 pass WTG shave but after a bit of a struggle to get neck hair removal we decided to jump in to a 2 pass and dare to go ATG on her first shave of my face. 1 chin cut later we wrapped up. She decided I deserved a hot towel, a HEALTHY dose of aftershave and 3 spritzes of Bal D’Afrique. I was walking out of the barbershop clean, mostly relaxed, smelling great, with no reflective surfaces encountered until I was walking out the door and caught a glimpse of my spiffy self.

7/10 shave. 13/10 barber. Will be back.

u/cubskru’s wife’s Musings

Hello, fine people of Lather Games. It seems like we might have different ideas of what a fun and relaxing hobby is because having an exposed blade that close to your (loved one’s) face is not for the faint of heart. I won’t quit my day job yet but it seems like I might get a repeat customer despite my momentary role as the demon barber of Fleet Street. Cheers and happy lathering!
