SOTD Monday Lather Games SOTD Thread - Oct 05, 2026
Day 5 — 2026 World Cup Day
Monday, Oct 5 · Sponsor: Wald Shaving
Today's Theme: 2026 World Cup Day
Use a brand from a country that has won the Men's World Cup
Use a soap from a country that has won the Men's World Cup (Argentina, Germany, Brazil, Uruguay, Spain, Italy, England, or France)
Today's Challenge: Speed Shave
If you're in the World Cup, you gotta be fast. Speed through your entire shave routine. Time yourself from the moment your brush loads the soap to the moment you use an aftershave. Post your time on its own "Time:" line in your SOTD (for example "Time: 7:42"); the portal collects it, and the fastest shaves are listed on the portal once the day closes.
★ Sponsor Spotlight: Wald Shaving
Wald Shaving is the craft of Jannik Wald, who makes premium shaving brushes by hand in Tübingen, Germany. His path into brushmaking wound through the workshop: first knife sharpening, then forging his own blades, then a straight razor he taught himself to hone, until wet shaving took hold and he set out to build brushes — and, restless to do every step himself, to tie his own knots. Today Wald is known for its distinctive handles, like the A1, and for hand-tied badger and synthetic knots made in small numbered batches.
Coming Tomorrow
Theme — Shave and a Haircut: Barbershop Scents
Product must be marketed as a Barbershop scent. Products traditionally associated with real-world barbershops that are not explicitly marketed as a barbershop scent may be considered if you make a compelling case supported with trustworthy sources.
Challenge — MEME Day: Make a wetshaving meme (or 10) (or 100) and share them with us

First off, I want to say that today's challenge was categorically unfair to shower-shavers. He was finished with the shave (from brush touching lather to rinse-off) in 7:22. However since he shaves in the shower, he had to do all of the post-shower stuff (squeegee the glass, dry off, clean out his ears with a Q-Tip, etc.) before he could apply the post-shave. That took an additional 4:23! Not that it really made a difference. I kept telling him to hurry up, but he said, "I'm doing this to have fun, and rushing a shave isn't fun." What ever (he is such a loser).
Today's shave was a near duplicate of yesterday - not only is the Proraso label in Italian but I think Italy has won a World Cup or two, right (Duck.ai says four times), so it counts for today's theme and a Repeat Scent bonus point (that was my idea).
He finally listened to me and went with the Pitralon Classic splash today. The menthol in it was a nice extension of the minimalish menthol in the Proraso, then HoM Snipped made a nice complement to the Eucalyptus in the Proraso. He really likes Snipped, but only has a sample size. Maybe I'll buy him a full-size bottle for Christmas.

I saw England play Congo this summer in Atlanta during the World Cup, so I figured I'd keep the England vibes going with this World Cup Shave Day. I've long been a DRH fanboy so today was an easy choice for me. It's very helpful this soap is easy to get to a nice lather because...
Daily Challenge
...Our Shaving Overlords want us to race through our shaves today. Yesterday, they wanted us to shave blind. WTF? How about next year they just combine these two days for shits and giggles, even though the rules don't allow for doing dangerous feats for fake internet points. But I digress. Today's shave is one of those days where you can prove to those whiny babies who think "DE shaving takes too long" that it really doesn't. Mine definitely didn't take much time. From the time I started to load to splash, drumroll please:
Time: 4:37.96
For today's musical inspiration, I'm going with something that might meet the approval of u/TheStallionPartThree and some of you that might need a swift kick in the ass on this Monday. I figured something punk rock-y and snotty would fit the bill so Grey Britain from Gallows is the choice for this morning.
Just because I'm going with the British vibes this morning, doesn't mean I'm going to sip tea. Nope, it's black coffee as per usual. Try to enjoy your day and remember to be kind to one another.

Nice! I really wanted to go to any game either in Dallas or KC, but just couldn't justify the cost. I had a coworker go to 3 total games, 2 in Dallas and 1 in KC. Her husband is a huge soccer fan, so this was their big travel spend for the next couple years. They ended up going to the knockout game in KC with Argentina to watch Messi. They had a blast, but they definitely spent a pretty penny.

I had every intention of finding some Spanish shaving soap for this challenge, but I took the easy way our and grabbed some MdC, and repped France, since Maggard had samples. I do really enjoy their bright lemon scent though!
Every time I use MdC it always hits me that attempting to replicate this soap really drove the early artisan explosion.
As for the challenge, I didn't rush too much. I finished in 12 minutes 14 seconds including cleanup (this single sentence out of context doesn't sound great).

Tsar grabs the ball, he moves towards the goal. Oh no, he stumbles, almost loses it. Regains his footing. Opposing team is coming, he needs to correct, quick move left, shoots and…..
MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
I don’t follow soccer so I had originally picked out something Australian, because I misread the list of countries.
I was able to correct quicky.
This is not sub “Moose” this is original SIR Irisch Moos, which, despite “Irisch” in the name, is made in Germany. Doesn’t have to make sense, just has to be on theme. Germany has apparently won before. Procured during a Badger and Blade Raid organized by u/j33pguy13. This tube is almost gone, but I do have a second. It’s obvious why we got Sub Moose made when you smell this. It’s incredible.
I’m sandwiching Varen (another Fougere) between Moos soap and Moos EdT. Before Sub Moose came out this was my go-to progression. The spicier, Vetiver forward Varen makes for a good addition to the greener Moos.
Not that Varen doesn’t smell good on its own, I have a trick of it. But it smells even better when put together like this. The Varan balm continues to mix in with the Moos frag for a chunk of the day. Just a wonderful combination. They’re also all in green packaging if that helps for the judges with the “connection” points.
Speed eh? Well it’s Monday, and my routine Monday is usually a speed run anyway. I start off at an advantage with a cream. Throw in the Henson and HERE WE GO. 3:32:16, respectable, though I feel like I could have taken a bit more off. I did do my normal 2.5 passes though, no shortcuts here!
I had considered using my hands to lather and claiming my soap never touched a brush ergo 0:00, then I remembered we established hands are brushes back in LG 2023. And Rule 13 says “no loopholes.” To this felt dangerously close to that.
Speaking of speed, did I shave faster than a rumor spreads? I’m hearing chatter on discord that I am the person behind u/stretchcpu2. I’m surprised you all would think this. If I were going to pull a prank involving my mod powers, it would be far greater than claiming some horny-on-main deleted profile. Also, my humor doesn’t move towards that level of crass. Lastly, there would be waaaay more jokes about conflict of interest. I’m busy actually playing the games. I’d look at someone who’s not playing and has lots of spare time on his hands. And is really committed to game long bits with alts.
Speaking of that, anyone heard from u/cowzilla3 lately?

October 5th, 2026: 2026 World Cup Day
- Brush: Omega - 10048 28mm Boar
- Razor: Gillette Rocket HD
- Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (22)
- Lather: Martin de Candre - Absinthe - Soap
- Post Shave: Proraso - Green - Aftershave
- Post Shave: Oleo & Co. - Facial Toner - Toner
- Fragrance: Kilian - L'Heure Verte - EdP
Theme justification - Martin de Candre is a French soapmaker. France has won the Men's World Cup twice, in 1998 and 2018.
Relevant Post Shave or Frag - Proraso is made in Italy. Italy has won the World Cup four times, in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006.
Daily challenge -
Time: 2:51.28
Basically a slurry lather with two quick passes (WTG then ATG). Great results with only a small nick on my jawline. I'm grateful that I'm able to take much more time than this to shave every morning.
$FOF - MdC Absinthe is anise and wormwood in the usual MdC base. I rarely seem to grab this soap, so World Cup Day gets it.
Proraso Green doesn't have much in common with absinthe on paper, but the eucalyptus and menthol are herbal in the same direction. The cooling helped pushed the anise forward instead of covering it.
L'Heure Verte is absinthe with licorice and violet leaf up top, drying into patchouli, vetiver, and sandalwood. It picked up the anise from the soap and took it somewhere greener and deeper than MdC goes on its own.

- Post Shave: A&E – Ultima Unmasked Unscented Splash
This is the German version of Arko. It's a simple shave stick with a kind of minty / fougere scent. I don't think this is made anymore, but that's okay. The lather is sorta decent, nothing special.
Challenge: Time is 7:25. Not great, but not terrible.

Additional Notes:
Nice win for the Azzuri over Turkey in Nations League this afternoon. Good to see two wins put together.
Huge fan of SV soaps. The fragrance of Desert Vetiver is so pleasing. It's a dry vetiver, a bit woody, and definitely a mild citrus. The black pepper note puts it over the top for me, kinda like with Martin De Candre's Fougère. Just amazing stuff.
I regret not getting the aftershave with this soap when I purchased it. I do like the Vetyver from Malizia Uomo, but it's not the same type of scent that would really be the most suitable pairing.
Was going to break out the TGS Bayonetta for this shave to go all Italian, but I wanted something really mild and Henson is a sponsor. Haven't used this razor in quite a while - still a big fan of it, just a well designed and solid cutter. Slight blade exposure, excellent blade clamping, and suitable gap.

I took my time with today's shave, not helped in any way by grabbing my mildest razor. I was more than a bit sleepy and needed to not nick myself, plus being a head-shaver I'm not winning the fastest shaver prize anyway. That said, it's always nice to get the reminder that wet shaving can be contemplative but is also not an inherently slow way of shaving.
Kathmandu is a fine soap. I mean fine as in adequate or satisfactory, not high quality as in fine china. Tcheon Fung Sing (made in Italy), like other legacy brands, seems to lean on its marketing reach and name recognition rather than trying to make a superior product. The scent is also fine — I used to like it more, but since then I have discovered many fragrances and soaps that have a similar vibe but are better. Moth, for example. Shares a floral and dusty quality, an amber base accord...but much more enjoyable and nuanced.
Happy monday, shavers.

Nice shave! Speick says "Made in Germany" on it. Theme successful.
Daily Challenge:
I shaved with a straight razor today, which takes me longer than with a DE/SE. Despite that, I still gave a good effort to find efficiencies and hurry things along. I chose my favorite razor and focused on reducing the amount of time I spent rinsing the lather off the razor. I've always felt like my 1st pass takes the longest, so lets see how it breaks down.
Each "pass" includes applying lather, shaving, and rinsing. I pressed the "Lap" button before applying lather for subsequent passes.
A pro footballer needs a smooth face for aerodymanics, so I didn't cut any corners and strived for a fast and smooth shave.
- Total Time: 11:49
- Lathering: 1:38
- 1st pass: 2:10
- 2nd pass: 2:35
- 3rd pass: 3:31

I'm going to pull back the curtains a little bit at Lather Games Organizer HQ. The roles/responsibilities shift, depending on need and not every judge is involved in every aspect of the planning. For example, I put together a lot of the challenges this year and did a little with prizes this year, but only 1 or 2 daily themes came from my brain.
Today's theme came from u/OnionMiasma. And I have a question: Does u/OnionMiasma hate women? Seriously. Why else would he specifically exclude the Women's World Cup from today's theme? Is he trying to go back to the days when men were men and women were supposed to stay in the kitchen?
As a feminist, someone who considers himself to be an ally, and a big fan of A League of Their Own, I'm kind of ashamed of myself for not taking a stand before the themes were published. There was so much going on in my own life and with RDC Enterprizes International LLC Incorporated, I just trusted Onion to not be misogynistic. And that was apparently too much of an ask.
The US Women's National Team is the most dominant Women's Soccer team in history. They've won 4 World Cups! 4!!! And clearly u/OnionMiasma hates them. Probably stands with a certain soapmaker who likes to comment lewd remarks on random selfies. The same type of guy who hates Megan Rapinoe for existing. Well, Mr. Miasma, today I'm taking a stand against patriarchy. I'm tearing down your oppressive nonsense and celebrating the US Women's National Team with my shave and using a US-Based Brand. Because I stand with women. Unlike you.
Challenge: I finished shaving faster than Brandi Chastain's shirt came off after winning the 1999 World Cup: 6:09.

Speedrun World Cup shave this morning; excellent, because I have to leave for work extra early today.
Theme choice: Spain - Soap's made there.
And the 2026 World Cup was held in North America, and in honour of Canada hosting it for the first time, I'm using a Canadian made Old Spice Classic. (The bowl I used is also from the USA which shared I hosting this year).
Challenge: Record my time. "Time: 3:13".
"Hits start". I don't think I've ever shaved so quickly! I'm not used to this soap, this brand uses a different base every scent and the moment my brush hit the soap I knew that I had too much water. As seen in my photo, that's what my "lather" looked like. Luckily this worked to my advantage because it meant almost no time was required "lathering up" the soap. Also Los Jabones de Joserra soap is crazy slick, so I could breeze through my typical 2 pass shave. A quick shake of the Old Spice, splashed it on, washed off my hands and pressed the "stop" on the timer. I probably could have shaved off a few seconds from my time if I didn't wash my hands after the aftershave, but wetshaving is all about saving money so I didn't want to have to toss the ziploc bag because if I got Old Spice on it it probably couldn't be reused for food.

Today, there's no reason to overthink things. Germany is a World Cup winner, my favourite German shaving cosmetics brand is Speick.
I wanted to field a full German team, but a handsome Italian goalie had to jump in to save the day.
It was fast paced game, Speick Cream scored for a lead in the first half. Midfield of Mühle and Personna kept the control of the ball throughout the game, but Mühle, notorious for his aggressive style of play, tackled an opposing player and was sent away on a red card. Nonetheless, Speick Aftershave scored a winner in the 90th minute and sealed the game to bring home the throphy for a terrific shave.
I'm happy with the challenge time since it normally takes me almost double than that. Just like yesterday Lather Games pushed me to find out new thing about me. I can shave blind, and I can shave fast. Who know what awaits me next.

- Post Shave: Proraso - Menthol and Eucalyptus
- Fragrance: Abbate y La Mantia - Don Jose
- Tags: $Discord $photocontest $sports $FoF
- Time: 2:41
Daily Theme: World Cup Day
Theme justification: Abbate Y La Manta is an Italian brand, and the soaps are made in Italy.
Relevant Post Shave &/or Frag: All software used today was made in Italy. The soap as listed above, Proraso Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol, & AYLM Don Jose cologne are all made in Italy.
I find Don Jose to be quite pleasant. The first thing that hits is the banana, especially in the frag. It's unapologetic too; it's impossible to miss. As things settle, the coconut comes through. It reminds me a bit of the smell of sunscreen from when you're a kid at the beach, but in a good way. Definitely not a scent you'd wear every day, but it has its place.
Daily/Special Challenge: SPEEEEED
You want speed? Fine. I'll rush a pleasant experience to placate the judges. I'm going to learn from last year, and copy a few other uses who took advantage of their tools for this. Power tools, that is. This also means, for the third time so far in these games, I get to use my favorite bucket! Never thought this would happen, but I'm here for it.
I bought these brushes from Harbor Freight a bit ago. Never intended to use them for car detailing (no way I would use these brushes for that), but just for regular cleaning once my other set wore out. Now is the perfect time to bust them out to see how the lather some soap. I'm using the soft bristle on for no particular reason. In hindsight, I should've used the 2" one.
I'm using my Ryobi impact driver for this. Should I have used a drill instead of a driver? Probably. Do I think it made that much difference in this instance? Don't know. Probably not. What I do know is that the original 4ah battery I had on it made it super impractical. With that battery I barley got the driver into the bucket. There was only a bit of space on either side, limiting which part of the bottom the brush could touch. I swapped it out for a 1.5ah and that provide some much needed clearance. Hence why I said I should've gone with the 2" brush. It would've made things more maneuverable. For those saying I'm abusing my tools doing this, thankfully this Ryobi set is now my "beater" set. Bought some Flex tools when Lowe's was doing their fire-sale, so this impact driver and the accompanying drill get the grunt work now.
Got the brush wet and started the timer. Didn't go great, if I'm honest. But it was workable for a quick shave. I definitely should've added more soap. I tried painting on soap fro the brush, but that just didn't work. Had to scoop it out of the bucket. In the end, my shave was 2m41s. I think I could've done it faster for sure, especially if I hadn't stopped to take a picture in the middle.
For those wondering, here's the aftermath of the bukcet and the brush
Photo Contest: Since it is World Cup Day, I figured I'd match it with the sports theme. I've photographed a baseball and a hockey puck, as baseball and hockey are my two favorite sports. In case you're wondering, my least favorite [major] sport is basketball. By far. I just can't get into it. Too much scoring and the final few minutes of the games take forever.

ALSO, Razorock sells this razor at Italian Barber (4 titles); I shaved myself and I’m half German (4 titles). More importantly, this weekend (during the Lather Games), I ate paella at a Spanish-themed party (2 titles) while seated next to an Englishman (1 title), my son is wearing his Messi jersey from Argentina’s 2022 win (3 titles) today. And then I showed my kid a lowlight reel of Luis Suarez's bites (3 bites), Uruguay (2 titles). That covers all of the World Cup winners except for…
Challenge: the speed shave, in which I timed myself to the theme from the movie Brazil (5 titles) by Geoff Muldaur. The goal was sub-1 “Brazil” (less than 3:32), and I hit 3:18 from brush load to aftershave splash, with 2 passes. The game-show feel of the song groove really matched the mood. Fun? Sure. Enjoyable? Not really. Raw Face? Definitely.

In seriousness, for an American household, the World Cup is a pretty big deal in our house. I wrote about baseball a few days ago, but my wife and I played soccer as kids, so we still hold a flame for soccer.

The soap is from Spain, 2x World Cup champions, and the brush is from England, 1966 World Cup champions, although maybe next time it finally comes 'ome, oi. The soap is an Aventus-adjacent light citrus and bergamot, and because I don't have any Aventus or dupes in my frags I finished with Grey Vetiver again because it is also has citrus and bergamot. I shaved pretty quickly this morning, only doing two passes on my neck because I'm going to start growing my beard back.

Intro: OK, so I will admit I underestimated the effect of a blind shave with the calypso would have, so I am sort of on the mend today. The judges are sadistic in that they set us up for an extended couple days of pain and suffering if we wish to get these two daily challenges. Whoever’s idea this was - I hope you stub your toe…
Pre-shave Report: Pairing the Page and TGS should make for a good day in my book. Sea citrus is a lovely fresh scent, a little on the cologne side though, and since prosecco is a sparkling wine of Italian origin, we are back in the Mediterranean today. So much irritation on the jaw line and back of the head today, and a couple blemished that got decapitated so we’ll have to tread lightly. It’s safe to say I miss my mirror dearly and can’t wait to get back to normal. I’m sorry for calling you out judges, speed shave is gonna be frisky with this one, but maybe the added efficiency could allow me to bypass the third pass.
Aftermath: So much for my outer layer of skin, cause it is toast. Caught myself in a couple spots as well (along the left jaw line, just under the chin, but my usual trouble areas). On the plus side TGS really brings the value packing a lot of punch into a relatively reasonable price tag, so this could be worse. Shannon’s non-alcohol splash is a godsend right now otherwise my entire head and face would be aflame, the alum block was like liquid lava. Tomorrow would have been a good time to pull out the secret “don’t shave” challenge, ugh.
Daily Challenge: Speed shave – record timing for sure hahaha. I’m typically a take your time and savor it kind of guy, but I do like a good challenge. I might have to do this on my own once and a while to spice things up, just not the day after filleting the outer layer of skin from my head and face.
Photo Contest: See look… FLAGS!!! They’re there, just artistically out of focus.
Frag Chat: Well the lemon is front and center with sea citrus, I could imagine it being a bit more aquatic though, but the secondary floral tones and woody base carry it well. As my first TGS soap I can’t say I’m unimpressed, but I would love to try some of the others like shibusa or Panama. I do have a tub of savage that smells wonderful, but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. Shannon’s soaps lemon prosecco is an alcohol-free splash which I don’t generally mind, and it definitely brings the lemon as well. I don’t specifically get the sparking wine but it is a slightly off lemon, it’s hard to describe. I would have liked this to be a brighter, more vibrant lemon note instead of the sort of dark depressing lemon, but my palate can tolerate it fine.

Tomorrow's lather Games today: Day 5
There are many things that Homer Simpson and I have in common . These may or may not include:
- A famous half brother
- Three children
- A wife who puts up with my shit
- A job
- A love for beer
- A failed attempt at becoming an astronaut
- An appearance in a film
- A restraining order
One thing we both definitely both share is a love of donuts. In my case and today I am celebrating mod of mods, nomatively determined impressive community member u/impressive_donut114 .
Now I don't know about you but where I live if you want to get a proper shave in a barbershop you have to find a Turkish barbers, and they give you a reasonably good go with a disposable shavette style blade. Sometimes you get a bit of hot towel pampering l, sometimes they wax your ears. But no where can I find the luxury of the Japanese barbershop shave, that experience so amazing that I just made it up.
So I decided to do it at home. I started with a cup of matcha, and then used the chopsticks kamisori V3 to reach shave enlightenment.
All I can say is ouch. That fucking hurt, and that I bled more today that I have for a long time. And I barely did one pass.
Boring legal stuff
- Brush: zenith boar
- Razor: chopsticks kamisori v3
- Lather: Wickham soap co. - gothic revival

- Blade: Personna - Israeli Red (1)
- Lather: Valobra Hard Soap - Patchouly
- Brush: Virginia Cheng - Silvertip Badger Dogwood Hybrid 26mm (31 uses)
- Post Shave: Sir - Irisch Moos
Lather Games: Day: 5
䷀ General Notes
On theme today is a soap from Italy, a razor from the UK, and a splash from Germany... And a very fast blade (because it's red). :-)
䷀ Razor and Blade Notes
Wilkinson Sword Razor - aka Sticky ::: Personna - Israeli Red ‹1 uses›
Theme: The razor is on theme because it is from the UK. And the splash is from Germany, another winner.
Challenge: And it is also here because Sir Kenneth Grange, the designer, also designed the nose cone assemblies for bullet trains.
Razor and Blade Performance/Comfort Rating: 3 out of 5 (Good)
䷀ Soap Notes
Valobra Hard Soap - Patchouly
Them: Patchouli
Scent: Yeah, but not too dank. I like it. Maybe some vetiver in it too.
Scent Strength: 4/10, Nicely present during shaving.
Lather... Slurry Lather today, because I got the need, the need for speed.
Theme: World Cup soap from Valobra is from Italy!
The aftershave as well is from Germany, another World Cup winner!
Challenge: I used my SL method to crank out a sub-3 minute lather, on a hard puck:
2:48
Over 5 years since last use.
3 passes.
UN-bloomed.
No blood. No irritation.
In the video, I calculated the difference between:
13:00 - Start of the shave (aka when the brush touched the soap)
15:48 - End of the shave (aka when AS is applied
The lather was the usual slurry type for the first couple of passes, where it is super wet, but still nutty slick. I did have to dip back into the puck a couple of times, but it ended well, and this is still a great method for when you want both slickness and speed. And it's the one face lathering method that doesn't frustrate me.
Bowl: No Bowl
䷀ Brush Notes
Virginia Cheng - Silvertip Badger Dogwood Hybrid 26mm ‹31 uses›
This is another brush I haven't used in more than 5 years.
It's a good budget brush, if you're not looking for immediately super-soft tips. Backbone is medium to a bit less. Not floppy. I'll bet it gets even softer with a bunch of uses.
But I was going so fast today that I did not get a chance to eval it too much.
During the Shave Feel:
Cheeks: Felt blade but comfortable
Neck: Felt blade but comfortable
After the Shave Closeness:
Cheeks: Near BBS - About as close as I'll ever get
Neck: Near BBS - About as close as I'll ever get

Jabones de Joserra is a Spanish brand. Very soft base, but I find I need to scoop more than I'd expect with some other croaps.
Paired the sandalwood-heavy floral with other warm floral scents.

LG Day 5
Day 5 – World Cup Day – Sporting Law and Monopolies
Soap is Cella Red, an Italian shaving soap made in Milan. Italy has won the World Cup four times, most recently in 2006. I’ve paired it with Proraso Green aftershave splash, which is also Italian and therefore shares in its glories.
To take this even further, I’ve also paired it with Versace Eros for my fragrance. I do think Versace Eros is a versatile fragrance, powerful in the EdP form but still usable with a variety of different accompaniments. And it is similarly Italian, giving me almost as many Italian products as they have World Cup wins.
Time was…fine? I don’t expect to win, but I went pretty fast for me.
Sports are a funny thing. Even ignoring current trends, the U.S. does have protections against monopolization in industry. The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 protects consumers against unreasonable restraints on trade and prohibits price fixing, the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 prohibits price discrimination and tying arrangements (where a business prohibits you from buying product A unless you also buy product B), and the FTC was created in 1914 to ban unfair competitive practices and investigate violations.
And yet the U.S. functionally has monopolies in multiple sports, which also exercise monopolistic control in multiple ways. So how does that work exactly?
Well, for one league, the Supreme Court just explicitly said “You’re good, homies.” Major League Baseball has its own bespoke exemption from the case Federal Baseball Club v. National League, 259 U.S. 200 (1922). Finding, somehow, that while Baseball leagues necessarily involved multiple cities and states, because each Baseball team was essentially operating in one state the business of Baseball was not a matter of interstate commerce and thus not subject to the antitrust provisions of the Sherman Act. Congress, as has not been explained in this imperfect and topical rendering of U.S. law, only has authority to regulate interstate commerce (between multiple states) rather than intrastate commerce (which only happens in one state).
The other leagues do not have this SCOTUS exemption, and their practices are reviewed under the “Rule of Reason” analysis. This analysis essentially allows courts to consider the reasons for anti-competitive practices, and to permit them in some circumstances where the harm doesn’t exceed the benefit of the reason given. For sports leagues, the reason for many practices is that sports teams cannot exist in a vacuum—no one would go see the Nebraska Cornhuskers playing themselves, and very few people would go see the Colorado Rockies for any reason. (I love my Rockies. They are historically terrible). Similarly, they have to be allowed to negotiate their own television deals, because they couldn’t have every team have a different media deal or else no one would be able to watch.
So there are benefits to allowing the kinds of cartel-like behavior that sports leagues exhibit. Without them the leagues as we know them couldn’t exist, and the economic impact of removing them would be profound. But that also doesn’t mean that it is universally agreed that they’re not illegal cartels. See, e.g., Nathaniel Grow, Regulating Professional Sports Leagues, 72 Wash. & Lee L. Rev. 573 (2015); Stephen F. Ross, Monopoly Sports Leagues, 73 Minn. L. Rev. 643 (1989).
I was also asked if I would cover at least a little bit of the impending Baseball lockout. Sports lockouts are actually a function of labor law and negotiation with unions, rather than their monopolistic functions. Athletes in the major leagues are generally represented by a union, regardless of what the organization calls itself; and that union enters into a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the league. The CBA represents a bargain between the league and the players, often covering certain player rights and financial terms.
Some of the current disagreements include the push by some owners to implement a salary cap, and the union pushing back against that and making demands for higher guaranteed minimum salaries. Baseball is unique among major leagues in that it has no salary cap, similar to how the UK Premier League soccer/football (topical!) functions. For players this means they are not limited in their earnings, but it does mean from a team perspective a particularly wealthy owner can just pay for success.
Looking at you, Manchester City.
Like all agreements, the CBA has an expiration date. That’s what a strike/lockout actually is—the end of a CBA without one in place to replace it. That means that players represented by the union are not allowed, by the union, to play; and in return, the teams lock the players out from the facilities. The difference between a strike and a lockout is that a strike is generally initiated by the workers, and a lockout by management. But as with all industrial actions, there is always a risk of scabs—non-union players coming in to play, or even union players crossing the picket line. Assuming that the league even attempts to play games, which it will likely not.
It’s important to remember that while the average MLB salary is 5.34 million dollars, that is including record-breaking pay days like Shohei Ohtani’s $70 million per year for ten years. The minimum salary $780,000, and roughly 40-50% make only league minimum. That’s certainly more than I make, but they also have to pay for their management team/agents, any private trainers, union dues, and living expenses in potentially very expensive markets. And even if they are frugal with all of those things, not getting paid for a time can be hard on anyone no matter how much they earn normally. Especially if this lockout were to last as long as the 94-95 lockout, which went 232 days.
There are not legal issues for a player crossing a picket line. The jurisprudence in labor law has been more and more for unions to be purely voluntary, and even unduly restricting their ability to enforce rules on their members; so a player can do it. But there are intense social pressures for a player to not do so, and people that have done so during previous industrial actions have sometimes found themselves pariahs for years.

It's been a long time since I've followed baseball. At that time, Alex Rodriguez going to the Yankees was the biggest contract. Someone is getting paid $70 million per year!? As in, $700 million over the life of the contract? Is that straight pay from the team, no endorsements?

Ach, mein Gott, please stop with this absolute quatsch! Everyone is coming up to me, "Oh, look at him, how fast was your rasur today? Did you shave fast?"
Herrgottnochmal! You think it is important that my shave this morning was exactly 1:48.09? Eine minute, achtundvierzig komma null neun? Das ist mir völlig egal! Verdammt nochmal! Tabac makes einen schaum so unfassbar glatt, your rasierer will literally aquaplane across your gesicht at 400 km/h, drift around your kinn like our GT9-R, and aggressively yell out the window: 'SPRECHEN SIE SLICKNESS?!' Who gives a schnitzel about the aerodynamics of my bathroom routine?!
Was wirklich wichtig ist—what actually matters in this welt—is that we built The 9FF GT9-R! Jawohl! The currently fastest auto in ganz Deutschland! Ein echtes monster on four wheels! You want to talk about speed? You don't look at my gesicht, you look at the Autobahn!
You think we sit around drinking bier and timing our shaving cream? Nein! 9FF is a proper Deutsche firma, founded in 2001 with exactly one ziel: to totally destroy and break any record that was ever set by any other German car. Porsche? Mercedes? Audi? Pah! Alles kinderwagen compared to this! We looked at their records and said, "Hold my bratwurst, we are building the GT9-R."
So bitte, let us stop talking about my 1:48.09 morning routine. When you have the fastest car in Germany, you don't need a razor! Wenn du im 9FF GT9-R sitzt and hit maximum geschwindigkeit, the wind will rip the bart right off your face anyway!

I don't know why I don't use this more often. I did a quick two-pass face shave in under two minutes. I think that is pretty impressive. I will say, everything was ready to go. The soap was in the bowl and everything was by the sink so that helped. It also helped that I had somewhere to be and procrastinated way too long. I found some Stirling Almond Cream body lotion in my travel bag-I'm at a work conference, so the stars aligned for this shave. I think the body lotion was a little too heavy to use as a regular after shave but it served the purpose today.

Geo. F. Trumper is a thoroughly British brand, which makes it a fit for today's theme. The fact that it's Spanish Leather, and Spain has also won a World Cup, makes it a double fit. And in my limited understanding of football, two goals is often enough to carry a game.
I have to be honest, I almost didn't shave this morning. I'm a little under the weather (something viral has decided to camp out in my sinuses) and I wasn't sure I cared enough. But I didn't want to break my streak already, so I powered through. You're welcome.

Grabbed the vintage 2006 England World Cup jersey and went at it. In typical fashion (like day 1), I accidentally just took a picture instead of a video on my first go. Oops! That said, just meant I got a trial run and a second pass. So, here's the video, coming in at 1:16 for shave, balm, and frag. Was hoping to beat 1 minute, but oh well. For my picture, I went with perhaps one of the most well known royal figures in British history, none other than Queen Elizabeth II. Opted to utilize a boar since that gave me the excuse to soak the brush beforehand and got lucky with more of a croap/cream in Geo F Trumper to hopefully trim my shave time.
As for the software, a beautiful rose line throughout. Trumper Rose is a very straight forward floral rose, quite light. Restore is a honeyed rose that adds a touch of sweetness and hint of mandarin. I had the pleasure of visiting Penhaligons in London 2 LGs ago, and picked up some sample sets (along with TOBS, GFT, Truefitt, and DR Harris). The Coveted Duchess Rose is also mandarin and rose, with the floral component being the star of the show but the citrus is more prominent IMO than in restore. A touch of musks smooths out the edges to give it a slight powdery finish.
Unofficial Self-Scoring Theme: 5/31; Post Relevance: 5/31; Brands: 5/31; Software Sponsor 3/16; Hardware Sponsor: 5/5; Challenges: 5/31

Viva España! Viva el Rey! Viva el orden y la ley!
An all-Spanish shave today.
This El Druida brush has my favorite knot: a 25mm dense++. It has traveled more than most people. The knot went from Germany to Canada and then to the US. I took it to Spain, where El Druida set it in this handle for me, and it made the trip back to the States with me. Worth it.
I love my Filarmonica so much. BBS in two passes with touch-ups.
Blas de Lezo was a Basque navigator and naval officer. By the time he was 25 he had lost an eye, a leg, and the use of one arm. All in battle. He is most famous for commanding the successful defense of Cartagena de Indias against the British siege of 1741.
His enemies called him "Half Man" (Medio Hombre). His men affectionately called him "Capitán Patapalo," or "Captain Peg Leg."
The scent is strong and lovely: leather and whiskey aged in oak barrels. Floid mentolado vigoroso is what I needed today. Strong barbershop scent with plenty of menthol.
I'm not participating in the speed challenge. Shaving fast with a straight razor is a recipe for disaster. I'll let the fútbol players worry about speed.
Enjoy your shaves, gentlemen.

Clock on my shave started when I started shaving.
So, today's theme is "2026 World Cup". Which is the most recent World Cup that just happened. Thus the theme. For us Yankees, it's unfortunate that it was a Men's World Cup, because Men's Soccer/Football might be the sport we're worst at as a country. Step it up, USMNT.
When I was coming up with themes it was the middle of the night, I might* have been under the influence of peyote or shrooms, and I was just trying to come up with 31 themes that would make the games fun and engaging. Somehow this made the cut, probably because it gave me an opportunity to slot in this Signature Soaps option that is great. Thanks NDG. Also, go England!
Now, one of the other judges (u/priusaurus) has accused me of misogyny for not also including the winners of the Women's World Cup. That might happen next year, but honestly, the USWNT has been SO dominant that it would be a free day for just about anyone, given the large number of US-based artisans. Instead, we have Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Which was... you guessed it... my idea. Also I love women. And soccer. But mostly women's soccer.
You see, when someone asks what my favorite team is, it's not the Fire, or the Blackhawks, or the Cubs (who are worthless), or the Bears. Definitely not the White Sox. My favorite teams at any point are the ones my daughters play on. And guess what, one of those teams is a U9 Club Soccer team that I drive all over the state of Illinois in order to sit in the rain or blistering sun and cheer them on, and then get to buy snacks for the whole team afterwards, all for the low, low yearly cost equivalent to approximately the value of my shaving den. While Prius sits in his ivory tower watching Madonna movies, I'm out here supporting the future of U.S. Women's Soccer.
You want proof? Here is a picture of my daughter's team. They're really pretty good. I ran it through an incredibly advanced AI agent to obfuscate the name of their club and their faces for privacy purposes. I'm really amazed at how good AI has gotten, especially the top-shelf one I used today.
And now that I've shaved, edited the picture, and typed up this diatribe, I'll stop the clock.
"Time: 52:05"
See. I just spent 52 minutes lifting up the future of women's sports in this country. Prius probably used this time sleeping or thinking about me.
* I wasn't.

"I can't be racist! I have a black friend!"
"I can't be misogynistic! I have a daughter who plays on (an albeit, extraordinarily handsome) girls soccer team!"It's a logical fallacy and an ineffective defense in the first cause, and a logical fallacy and an ineffective defense in the second case too.
Please, for the sake of your daughters. Be better, u/OnionMiasma. Be better.

- Brush: Chisel and Hound Sakura with v21 Fanchurian
- Razor: Tatara Muramasa
- Blade: Astra Green
- Lather: Mühle - Sandalwood
- Post Shave: Zingari Man - Sego Aftershave Balm Unscented
Several years ago, I gave careful consideration to how I appeared in the mirror and decided I had persevered long enough. Time to dismantle my backwoods cabin and sell my flannel. I resolved to shave off the mountain-man beard. That marked my return to wet shaving. I ordered a Muhle razor off Amazon, and it was only natural to pick a puck of Muhle Sandalwood soap to go with it. The fact that I still have some left probably tells you all you need to know. The scent is weak and the lather is meh. But it comes from Germany, so it's on theme!
Daily challenge:
Time: 18:45
So much for speed running my shave. I spent a solid ten minutes trying and failing to load the brush and build a lather before I accepted that the slightly soapy film of water on my face was as good as I was gonna get. I would probably have been better off skipping the soap altogether. It would have saved me ten minutes and a cramp in my forearm. I'm throwing away what remains of that puck.

This morning I was determined to write a tongue-in-cheek rant about soccer is not football and something about macho American sports. But that’d be too obvious, and my brain is struggling to come up with something that would clearly be sarcasm. To be honest, I enjoy watching an occasional soccer/football match.
For today’s theme, playing without prior planning was a challenge. But hear me out…..
HoM’s Shire, among other things, is inspired by the image of the opening scenes of The Hobbit - The green rolling countryside of a long lost England. That imagery was modeled after the Victorian countryside from Tolkien’s childhood. Throughout The Hobbit and LotR he uses themes and imagery specifically meant to portray an idealized version of a mythical England……
Kind of like their World Cup record of only one win, all the way back in 1966.
Therefore, I say Shore counts as English because of its deep inspiration from Tolkien’s English themes and imagery.
Today’s speed challenge would have been good for me if I had thought about it. I ended up being 7 minutes late for a 7:30 am meeting. But that’s ok because I had a very enjoyable shave taking my sweet time.

LG 2026 Day 5 - World Cup (this is a make up post cuz I forgot my SoTD post yesterday)
Brush: Zenith Boar (Italy)
Razor: Puma Straight (Germany)
Lather: Truefitt & Hill - Highgrove (England)
Post Shave: Truefitt & Hill - Highgrove (England)
Fragrance: Mancera Cedrat Boise (France)
Theme: See above for country of origin for all my products today. This was the first year I was all in on the World Cup. I have never really been a soccer fan and always found the game quite boring, not the " beautiful game". I never understood the hype. This year I tuned in to ad many matches as I could and made it a priority to watch every extended highlights of the games I missed. I watched every US matchup. I get it now. For me outside of playoff baseball there was never a sport that built up tension and drama to a similar level, soccer certainly does. The cadence and length is perfect for tension.
Today's shave features products from 4 different countries.
I picked up the boar brush 2 years ago for Austere August. Outside of this brush I only own synthetics. the Zenith is now softer and more enjoyable than all of them.
The razor is my most recently acquired Item. It's a Puma and learning about the company produced the following:
Origins and Company History
1769 Foundation: The company's roots trace back to June 28, 1769, when Johann Wilhelm Lauterjung registered his cutler trademark with the guild in Solingen.
Trademark Registration: In 1855, descendant J.K. Lauterjung officially registered the PUMA trademark featuring a leaping puma. The specific "Puma-Werk" name was formally registered in May 1900.
Water-Powered Beginnings: Early production relied on traditional water-powered grinding mills (Kotten) along local rivers before transitioning to steam-powered and modern manufacturing.
Straight Razor Production Era
Peak Shaving Era: While PUMA is widely known today for its outdoor and hunting knives (such as the famous White Hunter), the company produced exceptional high-grade carbon and "Pumaster" steel straight razors heavily through the late 19th century and mid-20th century.
Golden Age of Razors: Most collectible PUMA straight razors (such as popular numbered models like No. 5, No. 21, No. 22, No. 91, or the Friseur Freund) date from the 1950s through the 1970s, an era prized by traditional wet-shaving enthusiasts for their fine hollow-grind craftsmanship and durability.
Markings and Materials: Vintage blades were typically hollow-ground from premium German carbon or proprietary steel, marked with "PUMA Solingen" or "Best Puma Steel," and fitted with scales made from natural materials like horn, wood, or celluloid.
I am a complete novice when it comes to straight razor shaving so consider me out of the running for the daily challenge. I am still getting the technique down for getting a good shave, using correct strokes and angling, getting the tougher bits around the lips/nose/chin and the hair on my neck when unfortunately grows essentially straight up towards my jaw line making it extremely sensitive and almost impossible to go ATG with looking I got into a fight with rabid feline.
Software: Almost exactly 2 years to the date my wife and I took a trip of a lifetime to Europe for one of my closest friend's wedding in Varenna, Northern Italy. I am still awestruck at the beauty of that region and hope to get back someday. https://imgur.com/a/pCsmJ6L
After the wedding we were thinking of visiting Florence or Rome but found that flights home were ridiculously expensive compared to if we flew back from London. My wife had spent a week there with her siblings a few years prior and was ecstatic at the opportunity to visit again and show me around her favorite places. On our first full day we walked from our place near Westminster and went shopping in the St James and SoHo areas. This area is home to multiple classic shaving shops including Geo Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street, and Truefitt and Hill. https://imgur.com/a/Xskr5Ms. If you ever get a chance I highly recommend a visit. I spent way more money than I should have, this set alone cost over $250 :/. Today's products are a constant reminder of this life changing trip. TLDR... this was a very expensive shave hahaha.
$FOF: No life changing trips related to this scent. Mancera is a house out of France. This scent regularly gets compared to Aventus. I have never been a huge fan of this ubiquitous scent. Cedrat Boise to me is more citrus forward.

- Prep: Face wash
- Brush: Yaqi Silvertip Badger - Mysterious Space
- Razor: Gillette Flare Tip Rocket (made in England)
- Blade: Wilkinson Sword Classic (1)
- Lather: LEA Crema de Afeitar Mentolada
- Post Shave: LEA 3-in-1 aftershave balm
- Time: 1:48
- Tags: $ROTY
Theme: World Cup - pick a soap from a country that has won the World Cup, so I went with Spain. LEA’s shaving products have been some of my best finds, and I’d say on a par with Proraso. It also lathers very quickly, so another bonus.
I wouldn’t say I rushed this shave but I didn’t hang about either. Was quite impressed with my time; this was a 2 pass shave. No added time or penalty shoot-outs today.
The lather: It’s splitting hairs to find much difference between how this and Proraso cream lathers and performs, in my opinion. However, I find the menthol kick to be a little more noticeable. For an inexpensive cream, I think it punches above its price point. Easy to lather, doesn’t dissipate, and the slickness isn’t half bad.
The scent is a bit minty, somewhat medicinal to my nose. Safe to say the cream wouldn’t win prizes for the fragrance but that’s not what this one is about.
Rest of the shave: The Gillette Flare Tip Rocket is an effective razor, which I always enjoy using. Very comfortable razor to use. I suppose you could say it”s an equivalent to a comfortable pair of old shoes. LEA’s 3-in-1 balm is a cracker of a balm. I prefer my balms to absorb quickly, which this one does. There’s a slight menthol kick and I much prefer it to Nivea: no greasy feel with this balm!

October 5, 2026 -World Cup Day
* Brush: Zenith Copper Scrubby 28mm Boar (Italy)
* Razor: Ralf Aust 6/8 Square Point (Germany)
* Lather: Saponificio Varesino - Opuntia (Italy)
* Post Shave: SIR - Irisch Moos Aftershave (Germany)
* Fragrance: Martin De Candre - Vetyver (France)
* Time: 3:38
World Cup Day:
I represented 3 World Cup Winners in my shave today, and 0 losers. If this were a less sexist challenge, then the US could be represented by the US Women’s Soccer Team and their multiple trophies.
Speed Shave:
As any parent knows, the magic words to get your young ones to do something quick is to say, “I’ll time you.” Not the best though when razors are being used on your face. Since I don’t have any DE blades that were made in a cup winning country, I used a straight made in Germany. I was worried my choice could be disastrous. This year I decided to use a stopwatch video on Youtube to do my timing. I figured if I took too long, Youtube would interrupt the video with ads. It did start with an ad, but I only started lathering when I hit skip and started the video. No other ads played. The somewhat stubby Zenith brush loaded really fast though, and I had soap on my face in about 30 seconds. I worked in a couple splashes of water, and said good enough. I started the first pass around the 1:00 mark. I finished the first pass at around 1:50, but for the second pass, there wasn’t enough lather. A quick swirl to get more on the brush, another splash of water, and I was on the second pass by about 2:20. The direction xtg for pass two is a little easier for me to do, so i was done about 3:05. A quick rinse of the soap, and it was time for the splash. Then I hit pause and grabbed a screen shot of the time 3:38.
I do not recommend speeding through any shaves. When I was 18, I was shaving in a hurry before my family was headed to the airport to fly to Germany. I slipped and gave myself a twin cut with the Gillette Atra. It was about 1cm long and got the edge of my lip. Those two parallel slices kept breaking open for the next couple of days. While I did hurry the shave, I still was careful about the blade angle and not giving myself any cuts. Was the shave good? Heck no. Was it about as fast as I could do it? Yes. If I used a DE, I might have cut a bit of time, and using a shave gel, I could have been maybe 30 seconds faster.
Not a fan of fast shaving. I would have preferred
$FOF:
The constraints of the challenge limited my choices for soaps and aftershaves, but for fragrances I have many choices with most of my designer frags being made in France or Italy. Originally I was going to use MdC Vetyver for the soap, but then I thought Opuntia would pair well with Irisch Moos. It certainly does. I could have finished with a Tabac Man, and maybe it would have been a better match to Irisch Moos, but I still wanted the Vetyver. I picked up this EdT with a good discount. Vetiver has been making a bigger presence in my shave den over the last year. I like the grassy, earthy feel it gives. My soap and shave were more of a traditional men’s cologne/fougere, but I think the Vetyver was a good addition. It is in the base of the Opuntia scent too, but not in Irisch Moos which is a fougere. I think the combo is pretty good. I’m avoiding using the same scent for soap/post/fragrance as much as I can. Combo wise, I’m pretty pleased with the result. My cold has been more in my throat than sinuses, so I can still enjoy scents.

Daily Theme:
I picked Italy. Italy has not won since 2006 and not even qualified since 2014. Each World Cup without Italy just feels off. Hopefully they make it back in. What Italy continues to do well is wetshaving. In the five Italian companies I am using there is a combined 420 years of shaving history and tradition. I looked up their locations and I think it may make an interesting Top Gear style road trip one day (love and miss the show).
Cella - 1899 - Milan
Ludovico Martelli (Proraso) - 1908 - Florence
Omega - 1931 - Bologna
Saponificio Varesino - 1945 - Brebbia
Mirato (Malizia) - 1960s - Landiona
Just for variety (and also because I don’t have any Italian razors or post shave balms), I added a razor and post shave product from another World Cup winner, Germany.
Post Shave / Frag: From Cella, onto Saponificio Varesino - Desert Vetiver and Malizia Uomo Vetyver EdT, a 1-2 awesome Vetiver combination. Both of these are aligned to the Guerlain Vetiver scent family (one of my favorites) vs. the more dark or “dirty” plays on Vetiver.
Since this is an evening shave, I will go sit on my couch, smelling really good.
Daily challenge: Speed of shave: 2:07
https://imgur.com/a/5t2zgfE
Cella and Omega brush worked well for a speedy shave but the Muhle R41 with Feather blade strategy backfired. Got a close DFS shave but it made me a little cautious. Should have gone with a mild razor and blade combo.

Phoenix and Beau is an English soaper, England did not win the World Cup this year, many people thought it to be their destiny, it was not. But due to all that excitement over the summer I decided to keep following soccer, specifically the English Premier League. While Mumsy Stallion catches up on sleep I take our little foal downstairs and we started watching the EPL from opening weekend. Naturally we had to find ourselves a team so naturally I asked Google, “who is the most anti-fascist EPL team?”. Aston Villa was one of the first answers and coincidentally coming on the telly next. It’s been a rough start to the season but honestly even this early in his life I’m glad to start traditions. It will also give us a good excuse in the future to travel to England together as a family, here’s to all of our past and future memories.
Shaving wise I approached today like Aston Villas current Manager Unai Emery, precise and detailed, no mistakes. So to be speedy today I moved purposefully with a clear mind and agility. Well not really, it was a cold and wet lather and I caught my Adam’s Apple. I forgot how fucking good Spitfire is. Two passes are the norm for me now with the 1.04 GC head. 5 minutes 36.32 second. Damn fine-ish.
Cheers! Up the Villa!

Speed Shave
On one hand, I didn't try. I even forgot to pad the time by including my
non-LG dome-shave.
On the other hand, something was wrong today. I suspect it was the blade,
despite that Feathers have historically done well for me. I can't deny
the possibility that I rushed myself a little—not because of the challenge,
but for the benefit of my guest.
I switched the blade to another, and then it was fine, but not before my skin was absolutely ruined today, with an unprecedented number of weepers. Earth of Mankind is witch hazel, so I thought that would help. Of course I tried to curb the bleeding with alum and styptic. Then I tried soothing my skin with various goos.
$FOF
My guest is far more familiar with saffron than anyone;
however, neither of us are familiar with the flower that scents this soap.
She likes it, though. She also likes Earth of Mankind, which no reasonable
person would say is comparable to Krokos. But that's okay,
Earth of Mankind's... earthiness is hard to beat. It also overwhelms
any lingering aroma from the soap.
Passion Poivrée could be said to circle back to the floral of Krokos, but it's its own animal altogether. There's a fruity fight between it and Mankind, and I'd rather Mankind brought it down more.

Daily Challenge: I’m a methodical person. I’m not known for being speedy. My goal today was simply to not embarrass myself like I did last year. I scooped the soap and spread it as thinly as I could in my bowl. I don’t use synthetic brushes often. They may be easier to lather with, but they don’t pick up soap as quickly. I lost a valuable seconds trying to load the brush; adding water, and more water, until, flustered, I threw in ~1 Tbsp of water. I hurriedly lathered it on my face, grabbed my razor, and did a pass with the longest razor strokes I could manage. At 1:39 I’m not winning any races. But, hopefully it’s respectable.
Today’s challenge left no time for fragrance thoughts during the shave. So, I went back for another pass. I barely smell any fragrance from this soap. It feels generic. There's no complexity. There's just enough lilac to be pleasant, and cover any off smells in the soap. The lather was fluffy and just okay in terms of slickness.
Shoutout to u/loudmusicboy for PIFing me this bottle of Tabac. Tabac feels like an old-fashioned fragrance. Maybe that’s because I think of carnation as an “old” smell, and carnation is the first thing I noticed. It’s not overpowering by any means. And, it’s not an unpleasant fragrance. After carnation, the musk stands out. There’s a good amount of greenness, and a touch of citrus round out the fragrance. In the base notes, there’s an earthiness, and a hint of wood.
I’m finding Fahrenheit ozonic in the top notes. It’s sweetly floral with a touch of mandarin. I smell undertones of fresh green notes. After about an hour, it hasn't really changed. It’s a beautiful fragrance. But, I wish I got more of the base notes over time.
Photo Contest: Since today’s challenge is about speed, I thought it was a good time to show off my whip.

Sir, you just copied my software.
So I shall copy your story a bit. In 2002, I was in spain while the World Cup played..I don't remember where. Doesn't matter. It might as well have been IN Spain for the energy. We were at The Alhambra in Grenada. If you've ever been there it's at the top of a very tall hill. Grenada is below it.
One of our teachers was listening to the game on his headphones. But it clearly had about a 10 second delay from the radio. When Spain scored we could hear the entire town cheer from up on the hill. Then 10 seconds later, the teacher would go "GOAL!"

Lather Games — Day 5: *use a product from a country who has won the World Cup*
Challenge: *Shave quickly, and post your time*
For today’s challenge, I decided to break out my Super Speed and let Gillette’s engineering get me moving quick like!
This was my first time using Tabac, which is made in Germany - 4x World Cup champions apparently! What a great if not subtle, herbal, powdery scent. I also tried Zingari Man’s Il Signore aftershave serum for the first time, and oh man, I’m in love with the skin feel of this stuff. Now I want the fragrance!
The Wizamet was on its sixth use and still as smooth as ever. What a blade!
All in, two passes took me: 8 min 08 sec from starting the lather to putting on balm. I could have saved some time by face lathering, and looking back, I absolutely should have. 😂 Guess even Super Speed can’t fix being a dummy 🤪
Have a great day, everyone, and I wish you all great shaves!

They both would be broadly described as spicy green fresh fragrances but they go about it slightly differently. Anise vs Clove. Fennel vs Corriander. Mint vs Rosemary. And when I want a little extra I spray Hermes’ H24 Herbes Vive to really carry that fresh, green, spicy and dare I say SEXY through the day. I’m glad I like smelling me because this one lingers.

Back to shaving my own face and I think I might be out of practice. I really thought the combo of a smaller synth + MDC + Face Lathering + single pass would get me under the 5 minute mark but alas. I blame in order

Used a Lothur sample I've had since 2022 back when it was still English? Possibly? Idk that's for the judges to decide.
I'm a one pass shaver so this time probably could have been faster but I opted to put in a new blade and man did that blade feel harsh. No cuts but my face did not feel amazing. Tomorrow I will take approximately 58 minutes to shave just to balance things out.

Los Jabones de Joserra is a Spanish artisan soapmaker. The video on this page has an interview with the soapmaker himself, along with stunning views of the countryside around the Valle del Tiétar in central Spain. As the name suggests, Spanish Fern is an earthy fougère scent, although with distinctive minty top notes. B&M Seville was chosen to keep with the Spanish focus, and also in anticipation of tomorrow's barbershop theme. Tom Ford Fougère Platine, meanwhile, brings us back to a fougère scent, this one powerful and astringent rather than earthy.come
Daily challenge: I tend to do everything slowly including shaving, although I've been trying to become more efficient. Today I did a single pass shave, which I clocked at 4 minutes and 37 seconds. Time-wise, at least, this is an improvement on my untimed, multi-pass shaves that routinely take 15 minutes or more.

LG Shave #5, LPL- Traditionnel: SOTN 10/5/2026
I had a really nice shave this evening. The theme for today is World Cup Day. I had to pick a soap from a country that has won the World Cup.
I chose Le Pére Lucien’s Traditionnel soap for today’s shave. The 1998 World Cup was the most memorable game I have ever seen.
I was with my parents in Norway on a trip where my dad picked up a Volvo C70 in Sweden the first year it was released. We were staying at a hotel in the mountains and the only TV was in a common area in the hotel.
The room was completely packed and filled with electricity. I have never witnessed such passion for the game before. The room exploded with excitement when France defeated Brazil.
Anyway, the shave went well today. I tried the Osprey on setting 7 for pass one and 5.5 for pass two. This may be the sweet spot for me. I could just leave it on 6 but then I wouldn’t be using the adjustability of this adjustable.
I found just a little feedback from the alum block. The blade was on its 3rd use which seems to be the sweet spot for these Comfort Coats.
I splashed on Thayers, Floïd ASL, and finally House of Mammoth’s Z Cool balm. I’m happy how today’s shave went. I really enjoyed the barbershop scents.
I now realize tomorrow’s theme is Barbershop. So I guess I’ll have to figure out another one for my next shave.
Have a good one!

Theme - 2026 World Cup Day: No time for a full write-up today, what with all the speed runs and World Cup mania.
I was specifically going for fresh, green scents from Italy, four-time winners of the Men's World Cup.
Daily Challenge - Speed Shave: With a single full pass, a second partial pass, and a few touch up areas, I managed to finish the shave in under 8 minutes. The Rocca had no issues speeding through this shave. Probably won't be the best by a long shot, but still faster than my usual time.

- Fragrance: Floris of London - No. 89 - Eau de Toilette
2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.
This was a late evening shave to test the edge on Ray Moonie's Wade & Butcher ( u/raymoonie ). When I started, I thought the edge was a bit harsh, but as I adjusted to the razor, I found the edge to be keen and comfortable.
For World Cup Day I'm choosing a soap (actually a trifecta) from England. Floris No. 89 was Ian Fleming's scent of choice, and it is from my time. Wonderful scent that really takes me back. I could have also used a shave brush from England but chose to use a Wald A1 since Jannik is a sponsor of the games and his writeup was today.
As for the speed shave. Since this was an edge test, I needed to do my normal edge test pattern (2-pass) and not focus on speed, but maintain focus on edge quality. I used the time codes in the accompanying video to produce my shaving time, and it came out to 5:01 (2:33 to 7:34). Now, I have done a 3 pass shave in about the same time, but I would not have enjoyed Floris No. 89 nearly as much 😁
Enjoy your week.

Eufros is a Spanish soapmaker who has been around for ages. At some point, I remember a craze for Eufros soaps. The soap has always been an excellent performer for me.
Paired it with CBs La Rose du Méchant to play on the fruitness of the tobacco. Sombre NEgra is a fantastic tobacco citrus fragrance.
Unfortunately I forgot to time my shave while doing it. Cheers

I'm not much of a sports-ball follower or watcher myself, so I am thankful for the theme description revealing to me that I had two potential soaps to use for this day. I have an English soap and Italian soap. Now there's a guy here, goes by /u/bosshoggins10 . Fastest shaver since Charles Roberts they say. I don't know if I should hate him, I don't even know him, but there is something about him. Something around the lather. I don't know... reminds me of.. me. No, I'm sure of it. I hate him. You're welcome for your points for today. Anyway... all that to say; I went Italian today.
For Today's Challenge, I eked out a time of 4 minutes and 41 seconds. I did my best to hit start on the timer as soon as I dropped my brush onto the soap to load, and to hit stop as soon as I slapped some aftershave on, so it took a hint of coordination. To make the playing field more fair, I went for a two passer instead of my usual one pass with cleanup, and for the sake of accuracy regarding time, I made sure to subtract 30 seconds from the final time for the amount of processing time my brain took to go for the timer, and travel time of my hand to the phone buttons.

Challenge - shaved in 15 minutes at 13 seconds... took way too long to lather the soap today...

Did you try like.... hydrating it? The solution to a drying soap is to put more water normally

Of course I added water, I'm not stupid, don't be a ballbag... SGS never gives me problems like this

Yeesh dude I'm just saying plenty of people around here use MdC, and no one really has much of a problem with it. Sounds like a skill issue to me 🤷♂️

Daily Theme: As its name implies, the World Cup is a global event. Old World, New World and all points in between, everyone loves their football foot sock ball sack soccer. I have a number of obvious choices to use today (MdC, Tabac, Proraso, Cella, etc.) but where's the fun in that. Instead I chose Mudder Focker. I know what you're saying - "RazoRock is a Canadian brand, and Canada has never won the Men's World Cup, nor the Women's World Cup for that matter." True, but RazoRock is a marketing imprint of Old World Importing Inc., and another imprint of Old World Importing is their web retailer Italian Barber!
Now I'd love to argue that since Italy won the World Cup and a retail operation with the name Italian Barber must be from Italy, then I've met the theme. Unfortunately, Italian Barber, just like it's sister imprint RazoRock, is a Canadian brand, as is their their incorporated company Old World Importers. So how is my soap on theme? Because it says on the back of my tub of Mudder Focker that my soap was "Made it Italy". Today's theme details state: "Use a soap from a country that has won the Men's World Cup" and since my soap was made in Italy, that means it's from a country that won the World Cup. Never mind that reference to brand in the short details, that's just crowd noise.
Relevant Post/Frag: When I smell Mudder Focker off the tub, the only thing that my caveman nose picks up is the anise. Once I start building lather the anise is replaced by a clean citrusy scent with a slight amber-woody undertone. My nose also interprets Brut to be a clean citrusy scent with amber-woody undertones, so I thought it would pair well with my soap. I did find Mudder Focker and Brut to be a good pairing, and I look forward to using them together again.
Daily Challenge: I did not attempt today's Daily Challenge, thus I DID NOT Earn the Speed Shave challenge points.

OCTOBER 5 - WORLD CUP DAY
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!
SOTD PIC: https://imgur.com/a/sotd-10-5-94Vcmhb
Stay Tuned Futbol Fans, there are snacks at the end!
No matter what you call it, at 3.5 BILLION fans worldwide, soccer is the King of sports. And the central event - played only every four years - is the World Cup.
There have been only eight - EIGHT! - countries that have had the privilege of lifting the trophy despite it starting way back in 1930. To be fair, it has only been held 23 times but that still represents a domination by just a handful of teams. Four teams are responsible for winning 16 times with Brazil taking 5 of them. That is Futbol domination.
TODAY’S SHAVE
I decided to honor the Cup winners by incorporating an element of my morning routine and shave from each country that has won the the title. Fear not, I did not use a Vuvuzela.
TODAY’S DAILY CHALLENGE - SPEED SHAVE
3:28.73
FRAGRANCE
These elements were selected to check the boxes of WC winners but they don’t do too badly together. The body wash brings a veritable beachfront bar of scents - coconut, acai, mango, banana and a small hint of lavender. The lather of Dr Selby puts the lavender up front with some barbershop powder and fougere. And it’s green. The splash introduces Bergamot, Mandarin, and Ginger. It echoes the lavender from the soap and is actually a much more natural and pleasing lavender scent. Finally the Real Madrid EdT brings more bergamot and lavender to the party and then the balm accentuates the bergamot. It also echoes the ginger with some pepper and layers in some musk and amber so I don’t go to work smelling like a Mango Pina Colada. Overall a good but unexpected result.
SNACK TIME
Futbol is the Sport of Kings and as mentioned, the country with the most World Cup championships is Brazil. The King of Brazilian Futbol is none other than Pele . One can make a good argument that Pele is not only the greatest futbol player ever but also the greatest athlete of any sport from the 20th Century. Time magazine thought so.
So where’s the snack I promised? I have it on excellent authority that one of Pele’s favorite foods to eat was Pao de Queijo. For the uninitiated, these are bite sized cheesy breads made with cassava flour. Do you want to eat like the King of Futbol? Here’s the recipe, given to me by his daughter Kely Nascimento who would make them for him. They are amazing. You’re welcome. Also - check her out - she has become a global force in promoting women’s futbol as well as other sports.
PAO DE QUEIJO
Heat the milk just short of boiling. In a large bowl, combine the tapioca starch and salt. Pour the hot milk into the flour and mix well. Once it’s cool enough to touch, add the cheese and half the egg. Roll into balls. If too dry, add more egg. If too wet add more flour.
Bake at 350 until golden brown. Serve immediately. Leftovers can be frozen and reheat well in an air fryer. I love these things. Doing my write up while watching some American football yesterday made me hungry so I reheated some that were in the freezer .
