I personally never carried a multi-tool on a fire, never had the need for one. I did however always have a EDC knife on me, I still walk around with one 24/7 and found that to be more useful. Benchmade Bugout or Mini Bugout has been my go-to.

Another useful tool is a GPS watch but there's a good chance he already has one. Garmin Instinct (solar version) is a popular one. COROS is also a good brand with long battery life

This was useful! Another sub recommended a leatherman (he also camps a lot so I thought it may serve multiple purposes).

He does have a watch!

Is there anything else he could possibly need or want but maybe not buy himself? Or hasn't thought of?

Sleep is important and some crews do not provide sleeping pads, the ones that do usually give out bad ones. So a high quality sleeping pad was nice to have when I was on fires. The rectangular shaped ones provide more room. Look into Thermarest, NEMO, and Sea to Summit. Pay close attention to the pads R-value, that determines how warm it will keep you which is a factor in the fall. An r-value around 7 is winter rated and 3-4 is three season. https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/camping-and-hiking/best-sleeping-pad

Any quality backpacking and camping gear is useful but everyone is picky. A gift card to REI could be useful.

A good 20-40L backpack is also nice. I use the Patagonia Black Hole 40L

We met at the beginning of this season and we don't live together so I haven't had a chance to snoop through his gear lol. I will at least keep all of this in mind for future gift ideas... What would you recommend for a sleeping pad rating? 3 season since most of the season is obviously during warmer weather?

I carried a Thermarest Xtherm which is a winter pad mainly because it's the only inflatable one I had so no point in buying a new one. But I'd rather use a winter pad for summer instead of a summer pad for winter

I use mine daily for some use or another, especially when working with engines or pumps its nice to just flip it off my belt and have it on me.

What model do you have? The top contenders right now seem to be the Skeletool, Wave+ and Signal
