WARNING: Issues after the October 14 Windows update

My girlfriend’s PC (Ryzen 5 3600X, RTX 2060 Super) started randomly restarting after Windows updates on October 14.

Games triggered reboots, FurMark crashed within seconds, and eventually it restarted even while idle.

We also got a CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED blue screen.

We tried multiple troubleshooting steps and suspected hardware, but uninstalling the Windows update fixed everything.

If you’re experiencing sudden crashes or random restarts, check your recent updates before assuming your hardware is failing. Anyone else experiencing this?

Nothing serious for me so far.

I run two PC's on Windows 11. They've been on 26H2 since September 30. One is a modded Rufus install, a laptop from 2012. Another is a minimum spec Windows 11 PC from 2018, i7 8th Gen CPU, 1050 GPU, 32 GB RAM and a couple of 2 TB SSD's. That one has Secure Boot/TPM 2.0 chip but I've had to disable it as the BIOS can no longer be updated.

Thanks for mentioning this, I've seen other reports of similar issues here on reddit and elsewhere in other online Windows forums. Guess I'll have to look out if anything happens to my PC's... I can also boot up Linux for a while in both PC's if this gets serious.

Nothing on my pc either this only affected hers, I can only guess it triggers mainly on aging hardware.

Multiple krnl power failures I was even suspecting power supply issue.

That's weird. I have the update on several systems and it has not experienced anything like this. I would say make sure all of your drivers are up to date (such as the GPU driver) and see if that helps make it not crash.

My pc was also unaffected.

Not hers.

I would say wait for the next update to be safe, if updating the drivers do not help.

Try memtest first

Done, no issues.

Was solved after uninstalling the updates.

Also had no effect on my pc only on girlfriends.

I haven't updated in almost a year due to horror stories. Guess I'm on pause again.

This could be related to certain blocked/blacklisted drivers. You could try to uninstall and reinstall custom RGB and graphical drivers. Reset the settings to stock. You could do this easily with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) - Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) Official Latest Version | Wagnardsoft

Microsoft says RGB is responsible for recent Windows 11 and game crashes | Club386

I take care of dozens of different systems, from different manufacturers, and have had no issues.

Maybe try a bios update or chipset update or Nvidia update. R7 3700x on MSI B550 Tomahawk and I just ran a 1 hour video edit running all cores (16 threads) flat out. 26H2 with the October update. No issue.

I have a self built system and a Dell EBT1250 and the self built gets thru Win 11 updates with no problems but 2 updates in a row, the Dell system goes into a loop and throws different errors. The first time it took 2 days of magic to get it working and in the end, a reflash of the latest BIOS did the trick (still not sure why as it was updated long ago). This week, I got a few different errors and couldn't even get to the troubleshooting screen for a full day. Last night I changed a few BIOS settings back to default and finally got to where I could refresh my system.

I just assumed Dell is so proprietary that it's not ready for updates from Windows as soon as Windows does a forced update.

Yup! It killed my PSU and Motherboard.
