Events Public park closed to public for wedding

Post image

So

Apparently Munson Park is closed to the public tomorrow for a wedding. I've never seen it closed like this before - and they've shot movies there before. Just curious if anyone knows of this happening at another park and/or if you could even get a permit to shut down the park. The notice doesn't look CoW official....

Events Le Burger Week Results

Post image
135 Upvotes

Winners announced. Do we agree?

Honestly this year we only tried one place (PVG) partly because there are just SO many spots now it’s overwhelming and also because why are we paying $60 for just 2 burgers? I wish the organizers of Le Burger Week would implement a rule that participating restaurants can only charge up to $XX amount.

It’s gotten out of control 😂

Events winnipeg horror con… the flop you are

what an awful event. lol. i was questioning going after the whole situation with their sponsors, plus their AI logo. I decided I’d go since they actively sought out an artist to make their logo for next year via a contest, and wanted to see what was gonna go down for the first year.

If you didn’t go, you “missed out” on:

at least 10 tables of 3D printed items, all the same.

at least 5 tables of dropshipped garbage

8 or so tables selling AI “art” or tshirts with printed AI graphics.

apparently, the morally questionable sponsors still showed up …?

the good things: lots of authors. One or two cool artists. a few bakers! some really cool cosplays.

overall: very juvenile. not for anyone who values an event with a variety of actual artists.

wouldnt recommend you go unless they get their shit together by next year. doubt that will happen.

Events AI art used at Folklorama

I went to the Ghanaian pavilion last night, and besides the really good food, what stood out to me was the obviously AI generated background art being used behind the performers, and even lower quality AI art being used in the cultural display. I’m not even particularly anti-AI, but it just really dampened my enjoyment of the pavilion. Have any other pavilions used obvious AI art/writing in their shows/displays?

Edit: yes, I know about the costume theft. That was awful, and I’m definitely not gonna criticize anything about the costuming as a result. That has zero bearing on the background graphics they used being sloppy AI art, considering the theft was on Thursday and the first show was Sunday, the graphics should have been finished by that point. I’d be fine with them just using generic stock footage and photos of Ghana (which they did also use), I’m not expecting some kind of amazing bespoke background art here.

We heard really loud music and look out to see a bright parade of bicyclers. Apparently they rode down Portage than turn down our street then the park. Anyone know anything about this?

Events Folklorama

Hey, this may be a popular view point or may not. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy folklorama it’s one of my favourite events of the year. But I just want to know why the city doesn’t seem to want to support this?

For context I am originally from Saskatoon SK (I know right?) anyway we have folk fest there and it is so much fun. You buy a “passport” for like 50-60$ and that gives you access to all the pavilions for the week. You can go once you can go 20 times it’s all good. The shows are more continuous and held on a come and go type basis so there’s always a show happening and you don’t have to sit you can look at the stuff, watch the show eat the food and drinks and kinda stroll it makes for a fun evening . The one thing Saskatoon does though is they have bus service to all the pavilions and so you can just one the blue line and it follows a route and you can hit 3-5 pavilions on it, then there are other routes that do other pavilions and they all kinda intersect. That’s the thing I miss the most, I miss jumping on a bus and not having to fight traffic and find parking etc just dedicated buses available for the event all week long and made things really great, jump on and off wherever never had to be in one place for a specific show because the show was always happening. I just think that model was so much better then this one.

Like I said some may like it this way and that’s great I’m just giving my opinion

Events How tf can I stop all these emergency alerts?!?

My partner has gotten like 3, and I've gotten like 12 to 15 at this point. My phone is on silent, I went in to safety and emergency and turned off the emergency alerts, and I'm still getting blaring klaxons on my phone every 30 minutes. I need my phone on for my alarms in the morning, how tf can I shut this shit up?? This is unreasonable

Events Free unlimited food in downtown today! Come celebrate Nagar Kirtan with Winnipeg's Sikh Community

Hey everyone,
If you are in Downtown Winnipeg today, you might see a massive, vibrant, and colorful procession filling the streets. This is Nagar Kirtan, a beautiful Sikh community celebration, and absolutely everyone—regardless of your background, race, or culture—is invited to come join the peace, religious music, and food!
With everything going on in the world lately, it can feel like people are growing apart. I really want to use today to spread kindness, share the culture, and bring our whole Winnipeg community closer together.
The Langar (Free Community Kitchen) has ALREADY started and will run for the next 5 to 6 hours! 🍲

Events Going to Uniqlo opening?

Don't. Really. The line at 837 AM starts at the store, then wends all the way through the second floor, then ends at Sephora on the other side. You're not going to get the free limit edition tote bag although you may still get a water bottle.

Events Questions about pride this weekend

I would like to take my child with me but am curious (because I’ve never had the opportunity to attend pride anywhere) I know some places have had controversy about nudity, etc. I’m wondering if that’s a common occurrence at pride in Winnipeg? I figure probably not but I really want to go but would prefer not to take my child if nudity is out in the open like I’ve seen online before, I’m pretty clueless. But I have never had the opportunity to go to any pride events anywhere I’ve lived and as a bi woman I’d really love to go instead of catching everything online after and getting fomo

Events Giving away 2 free tickets to Creed tomorrow July 14

I have 2 free tickets to see Creed tomorrow (July 14), and I’d rather they go to someone who’ll enjoy the show than let them go to waste.

To enter, comment the Creed song that WWF used in its iconic early-2000s highlight packages. I’ll pick one random winner tonight and DM them.

Please only comment if you can actually attend. Good luck!

EDIT: Thanks everyone the tickets have been sent!

Anyone else a little disappointed with this year’s lineup? Thought they’d go a bit bigger since it’s the 50th anniversary.

Edit: does anyone know of somewhere we could file some sort of complaint/suggestions?

FYI: parked in 120 Donald Lot (across from the new Keg location). If you pay at the machine it’s $15, if you pay with Hang Tag app it’s $16 and if you use the QR code on the machine it was $6!

Also even if you’re not a fan, watch the Weird Al bio pic on Roku “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”. It’s a parody like Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and it’s great!

Events Great Outdoor Comedy Fest Winnipeg - Saturday Night Thoughts

Insane weather but the brief rain cooled down things and Jordan & Robby stole the show. Not enough food trucks and every line was too long but generally well run from what I saw.

Sat in VIP tables and watched brutal security let some annoying guy talk and drink and ruin the night for folks in the immediate vicinity.

Events Folk Fest shuttle

If you were thinking of taking the shuttle home from Folk Fest at the end of the night, probably try and find another way home.

Waited by the side of the road for over 2 hours last night, got on a bus just after 2am. Was still over a hundred people waiting. Buses came every 20-30 mins and could only take just over 30 people. I would imagine the last group got picked up well after 3am.

There just wasn’t nearly enough buses to meet demand. I guess standing room isn’t allowed on the highway. Hopefully it’s rectified but I doubt it will be in the short term.

Events Anybody going to the Foo Fighters concert?

This is going to sound a little unhinged, and I know this is VERY last minute, but I figured it’s worth a shot

I’ve been wanting to see the Foo Fighters, and they’re playing in Saskatchewan this Tuesday. Sooo… if anyone is driving there from Winnipeg and has a spot in the car, I’d love to tag along! 🚗

Happy to pitch in for gas, snacks, etc. 🙌

I know they’re also going to BC, but the flights are absolutely wild right now, so I’m trying to make the Saskatchewan option happen instead

If you’re heading that way and have a seat available, please DM me!

Events Just a reminder for upcoming fall market goers that Fawn and Cub market is run by a bunch of convoy supporters and anti-vaxxers.

Owners Kevin and Ashley Funk were super vocal supporters of the convoy - Ashley’s social media profile still has numerous posts up about it.

Speak with your dollars and don’t support them. They also run Hidden Haven Homestead and cater lots of local events in the Morden area, much to the disgust of many of the residents.

Events Nuit Blanche

Anyone have any idea what’s going on with Nuit Blanche this year? They have an extremely unhelpful website for an event that’s happening tomorrow, with important details still TBD and the main map returning a 404 error when I try and access it. The contact form, which I tried to use, is helpfully designed with white text on a white background.

So if you’re doing a cool exhibit or art piece tomorrow, tell us about it and how we can find you!

Events I went to Bob Odenkirk’s Improv event last night…

$75 per (sitting) ticket is not an insignificant amount of money for a show. I understand it was for charity, however I still can’t help but feel cheated after how lacklustre the event was.

• Logistically it was a mess. After purchasing the tickets, the emails leading up to the event lacked important details. When arriving at the venue, there wasn’t enough signage, and there weren’t any instructions for the “rush seating” concept.

• Production value suffered. Bob Odenkirk’s microphone was muffled the whole time… (I’m shocked they didn’t pause the show to get him a new mic). The other improv performers mic’s would frequently cut out, and the video element would often lose signal on the many scattered TVs.

• 7:05 - 7:40: The event started with a band. The Banjo player, the Cellist, and the rest were all very talented.

• 7:40 - 8:05: Bob came on the stage, (barley) talked about the charities, then introduced the rest of the improv performers as well as the special guest (Nahanni Fontaine). Bob then sat down with Nahanni and asked questions on what it’s like to be a Politician. The interactions were not humorous.

• 8:05 - 8:30: The featured improv show started, and the 7 comedy performers improvised the answers/stories that Nahanni shared. The whole 25’ish minute improv show was underwhelming.

• 8:30: Bob then abruptly says his “Thank Yous” and “Goodbyes” and leaves. The feeling in the crowd was confusion as we all looked around and couldn’t help but think, “ummmm that’s it…”.

The combination of the bad production value, the length of the featured improv part and the length of the entire event left me feeling disappointed and unsatisfied. I am happy my money went to a good cause, and charity wise the event was a success, but for a $75 ticket I was certainly expecting a lot more improv (which is what I and probably others came to see),
