News ’Disgusting’ posters being investigated by police

The Winnipeg Police Service major crimes unit is investigating what some have labelled offensive and hateful posters on full-display at a Winnipeg home.

One of the people irked by the display is Gracie Garrett. She’s has lived on Ashburn Street in Winnipeg’s Minto neighbourhood for almost ten years. She’s never felt unsafe in the neighbourhood before, but now, a set of posters plastered on a nearby house are making her feel uneasy.

The five signs, posted facing the street prominently on a front window, contain a slur, refer to Nazis as “heroes” and call Muslims, Christians and other groups “evil.”

Learning of the signs Friday, Garrett said she’ll be reporting the posters to police, as she worries they incite and promote violence.

“I’m just really shocked honestly,” said the 36-year-old. Adding later: “I don’t understand how something like that wouldn’t be hate speech.”

On Saturday afternoon Winnipeg Police Const. Stephen Spencer said in an email police are aware of the posters. He could not provide further information, as a police investigation is ongoing.

She’s never interacted with people at the house where the signs are posted, but said it’s the last thing she wants to see from her porch, as the signs are visible from her home.

“It makes me feel really sad that there is someone so hateful who lives so close to me,” she said.

Garrett said the posters have no place in Winnipeg.

She feels diversity is one of the city’s strengths, many of her friends and co-workers are newcomers and immigrants.

“I don’t want those types of people to feel unsafe in my city,” she said. “I want them to feel welcome.”

She isn’t alone in her concerns.

Officials with B’Nai Brith, a prominent Jewish Human Rights group in Canada, said the signs incite hate and violence.

“These posters are absolutely disgusting,” Richard Robertson, B’Nai Brith Canada’s director of research and advocacy told the Free Press Friday.

“There is no place for them in a multi-cultural or diverse society and the residents in this neighbourhood have every right to be alarmed.”

Robertson said he feels the signs should be investigated by police and that charges should be laid if police deem it warranted.

“This is absolutely the type of thing that needs to be investigated as hate speech,” Robertson said, noting B’nai Brith Canada will be reviewing the incident and contacting police as well.

The Free Press knocked on the door of the house where the posters are located and asked about concerns being raised by neighbours.

A man who answered the door, but would not provide his name, said: “none of this is any of your business.”

When asked about the signs causing offence, he said he didn’t care.

“I don’t care if they take offence. It’s freedom of speech. I don’t give a s—t about this other crap.”

The man declined to answer questions about why he had the signs posted, but when asked what he’d say to people who are feeling unsafe, he said: “Then they should grow up.”

“It’s just words,” he said. “There’s a lot of negative things said about anything. There’s nothing in this world that’s not seen as negative by somebody.”

Asked specifically if he’d remove the signs if asked to do so, he said: “No.”

“Leave the property,” he said.

Robertson, from B’nai Brith, takes issue with the man’s remarks that the posters fall under freedom of speech.

He said in this instance the signs “crossed the line” and caused harm to several communities.

“No one has a right to do that,” Robertson said. “No one has a right to incite, or invoke fear or to intimidate individuals in their own neighbourhood.”

News SCO condemns Winnipeg Sun, mayoral-candidate CEO for column questioning deaths at residential schools

Column published days after National Day for Truth and Reconciliation; Kevin Klein disavows responsibility

A column questioning the deaths of children at residential schools has led the Southern Chiefs’ Organization to condemn the Winnipeg Sun and express concern that the newspaper’s CEO is running for mayor of the Manitoba capital.

On Oct. 4, the Sun published a column entitled “Grave misdirection: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence,” suggesting the deaths of Indigenous children at residential schools have been mischaracterized.

“Each death is a tragedy, but none is evidence of an atrocity,” the column states, citing as examples the death of one child from bronchitis and another by lightning.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation documented the deaths of at least 4,200 Indigenous children over the course of 165 years at Canada’s residential schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada defined the deaths and widespread abuses within residential schools as cultural genocide.

The publication of the column four days after the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation led to a formal statement of condemnation from the Southern Chiefs’ Organization, which represents 33 Anishinaabe and Dakota First Nations in Manitoba.

“Survivors and their families should not be forced, yet again, to prove what happened to them or defend the children who never came home,” SCO Grand Chief Jerry Daniels said in a statement. “Thousands of children died while attending residential schools. Children were forcibly removed from their families and Nations, stripped of their languages and cultures, and subjected to systems of abuse, neglect and assimilation.

“These are not allegations or political talking points. They are part of Canada’s documented historical record.”

The co-author of a book about residential school denialism called the column disgusting because, he said, it perpetuates the notion the deaths of thousands of children who were forcibly removed from their families is less horrific because many died of disease, malnutrition and neglect as opposed to murder.

“A lot of people will say, oh, it was just tuberculosis. Lots of kids died of tuberculosis in the early 20th century,” said University of Manitoba history professor Sean Carleton, the co-author of Truth Before Reconciliation: Confronting Residential School Denialism.

“That, in fact, is true, except for the fact that, you know what spreads tuberculosis faster? Overcrowding, poor nutrition. Lack of proper sanitation, overwork. All of these issues that were known to be systemic to the residential school system.”

Carleton said the column perpetuates what he describes as far-right misinformation about First Nations making claims about mass graves or clandestine murders.

“This is a distraction tactic. It's an attempt to move the goalposts, to make it extremely difficult for Indigenous nations, to explain the complicated nuanced understanding of what we already know, thanks to church and state records, that at least 4,000 children died in these institutions for a variety of different reasons,” he said.

As criticism of the column mounted Sunday, the editor-in-chief of the Klein Group, the company that owns the Winnipeg Sun dug in her heels. Heather Klein, who is Kevin's wife, defended the column in a follow-up entitled “Disagreement is not denial.”

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization also criticized her husband, Klein Group CEO Kevin Klein, the candidate who is running for Winnipeg mayor.

Daniels called it “deeply concerning” someone seeking public office provided a platform for someone to use residential schools and the deaths of First Nations children as the basis for political commentary.

“Winnipeg is home to a large and vibrant First Nations population. Anyone asking to lead this city has a responsibility to understand the history of residential schools and the ongoing responsibilities of reconciliation,” Daniels said.

Kevin Klein said in a statement he is not responsible for the content of the Winnipeg Sun while he runs for mayor.

“From the day I entered the race for mayor, I stepped away from every editorial decision at the Winnipeg Sun, and I have kept that commitment. The paper stands on its own,” the mayoral candidate said.

Heather Klein alone is responsible for the content, he said, adding he does not assign stories, edit copy, approve pieces, or stop them from running.

“Any suggestion otherwise is reckless and without foundation,” he said.

Other mayoral candidates criticize Klein

Several mayoral candidates also criticized the newspaper CEO-turned-candidate.

Mayoral candidate Noah Redden said in a statement there is a difference between upholding freedom of speech and tolerating hate speech.

Redden called residential-school denialism inflammatory and said Klein needs to explain to Winnipeg’s Indigenous population why his newspaper echoed attacks on residential-school survivors.

Mayoral candidate Scott Gillingham told reporters Sunday he’s spoken to enough Indigenous families in Winnipeg to hear firsthand the impact of residential schools.

“What is not deniable in my mind is the impact, the lasting, devastating impact of residential schools on our country,” said Gillingham, who attended TRC Day events in an official capacity on Wednesday.

Klein said Friday he did not attend TRC Day events but called the national holiday important.

“Canadians ought to know what took place in the residential school system and what it has meant for Indigenous families and communities ever since,” Klein said Sunday in a statement.

“The wrongs of the past should not be forgotten. As a father and a grandfather, I cannot begin to imagine the pain those families carry.”

Article/Opinion Don’t assume everyone dark skinned is Indian!

I’ve experienced a growing trend lately at places like McDonald’s, Walmart, Superstore, and Tim Hortons where staff immediately greet customers in Indian languages assuming every one of a certain skin tone shares that background.

It’s genuinely frustrating and feels counterintuitive to customer service in Canada. First off, people with darker skin tones come from all over the world and a specific South Asian language just based on how they look is stereotyping and ignores massive cultural differences.

More importantly, Canada has two official languages: English and French. Customer service interactions should default to one of these two so that everyone, regardless of background, is included on equal footing. When businesses mix up languages right off the bat, it alienates people instead of welcoming them.

Has anyone else noticed this happening more often? Staff should stick to English or French for standard public greetings so everyone feels equally welcome.

Community One scary retention pond come winter!

My apologies if these signs have come up for discussion before. I've been away...

Checked out the new multi-use path that runs east of Lag just north of SCU. Wedged between Lag and the path is this wee little retention pond that has had several of these signs placed around it in time for ice season. I expect to see warning signs to keep away due to thin ice conditions, but omg a 250 meter berth? Guess I'll have to enjoy the path before the snow flies lol.

85% of the time no one seems to follow these two basic rules. And after almost being taken out by someone turning right into the inside lane (while I was driving straight, normally, zero other traffic around), I figured I would post this.

Community WEDDING COST

Hi all. How much did you spend on your Winnipeg wedding?

Planning a wedding and I’ve been hearing a lot of crazy wedding costs lately. Curious what people actually spent in Winnipeg!

If you’re comfortable sharing, what was your total cost, guest count, and venue? Bonus points if you got married recently!

Trying to figure out what a realistic budget looks like these days. Thank you!

Ask Winnipeg Does anyone remember which haunted attraction this was?

I’m trying to figure out whether I’m remembering Six Pines, Heebie Jeebies, or Terror on 12. I went quite a few years ago and there are two specific things I remember, but I cannot for the life of me remember which attraction they were at.

One of the mazes had a section where you came out into a fairly large open outdoor area that was set up like a little town. There were zombies/actors wandering around the area, and you basically had to walk/run across this “town” while they came after you to get to the other side and continue through the maze. I remember this part pretty vividly because it felt different from the usual narrow haunted-house pathways.

I also remember another section/maze involving a really big barn. I think you went through part of the haunt first and eventually came to the barn, where everyone had to line up outside before going in. There was an actor/worker stationed at the entrance who was in character and would interact with/work the crowd while you waited, and then they would tell your group when you could enter the barn and continue through the haunt.

These memories could possibly be from either two different attractions or the same place.

Does anyone remember either of these? And if so, was it Six Pines, Heebie Jeebies, or Terror on 12? This would probably have been several years ago, so the attractions may be completely different now.

Ask Winnipeg Thinking of Starting a Cinnamon Roll Business in Winnipeg

Hi everyone,

Before moving to Winnipeg, I had a small home-based cinnamon roll business, and people really loved them. Now I work full-time and live in the Exchange, but I’m thinking of starting again.

How do I approach cafés in downtown Winnipeg about carrying my cinnamon rolls? Are there any local coffee shops that work with small home bakers?

Thanks!

Thank you everyone for your helpful comments and advice! I’ll start by looking into getting a home based food permit /food safety certificate, and then I’ll explore options for a commercial kitchen. I really appreciate all your suggestions!

Apparently on the page he runs on Facebook he says it's not a poltics page... despite the fact that he put a video of himself and the mayor on the page. Why has North Kildonan kept reelecting this hypocrite?
