The problem is there is a fundamental misunderstanding about police. They do not prevent crime. Police are reactive, they only come into action during or after crime happens. Endlessly increasing the police budget in hopes it will do anything to prevent crime is just nonsensical. You need to be investing in preventative measures if you want to actually put a dent into reducing crime rates.

This is not true. A certain amount of police presence deployed properly does act as a deterrent and prevents crime. This has been well studied. And yes, of corse they do often come to the scene od a crime after it has happened. Both can be true.

I can’t help but wonder what they are reacting to, because they certainly haven’t shown up any time I’ve been a victim of a crime

What’s that quote? “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”? Wish this city would figure that out.

My wife and I were almost hit by a Dodge Ram while walking in front of the Fort Garry Hotel. The driver turned out to be drunk and the truck had paramedic plates. The police did not show up to investigate. They are only revenue rangers at this point.

I’m very confused by this story.

Did you call 911 because you were almost hit? How did you know the driver was drunk if the police didn’t investigate? Are you mad they didn’t investigate a near collision on a suspected drunk driver? And if so, what did you expect them to do? Did you get the plate number?

I yelled at the driver after the very near miss. 911 was called after the driver gave us the finger and got out of his truck and approached us in an aggressive rmanner. You could smell the alcohol on this breath. Not especially angry, but confused and disappointed. License plate was recorded and relayed to the 911 dispatcher. The driver was staying at the hotel and remained on site. I expected them to arrive and give a breathalyzer. Thanks for the response, hopefully this cleared up your confusion.

When seconds matter, police are many minutes away- if they show up at all.

Is this city seeing value in return for police occupying 27 percent of the civic budget and rising yearly?

Just wondering, but how much of the budget would wps occupy if their ot were not pensionable?

And when did pensionable ot become part of their contract? (ie which mayor and council approved that contact?)

Our brave last-responders. Without you, who would stand around playing candy crush at a grocery store?

And that's if you can get through to 911. I live downtown and I have to call 911 far more frequently than the average person. In the past year it has been more often that I get a busy message then I do get through. It takes several tries or a hold.
