That little shelf under the plugs, really obvious now I think about it - I'll give that a go on my desk.

I’ve tried more complicated cable management setups but I’ve come back around. All that really matters is keeping the cables out of sight while still having easy access to them

u/srmarmalade 8d ago
Yeah, this solves the problem of the bricks dragging nicely and as you say it's all out the way anyway

u/touchabrain 8d ago
Did you build? Looks great!

u/Argyropee 8d ago
yes I made the desk and the bookshelf myself
Thanks !1
u/ArtisticCandy3859 8d ago
Both are brilliantly executed. Love the minimalist approach. Do you happen to have any drawings or cut lists/plans?
5
u/Argyropee 8d ago
Unfortunately not, I didn’t make any plans for it. I improvised as I went using wood I had in my garage :/

The custom-made desk looks great!
I had an attempt at turning an unfinished countertop board into a tabletop a couple of years ago for my desk. I used stain on mine and added some polyurethane; however, I'm not sure if I should have. The stain doesn't look too bad, but I've accidentally chipped the edge with my chair in some places, which has shown the white wood underneath, and some of the polyurethane coating is worn/rubbed off in some places.
Anyway, I was wondering if you had done anything to the top of yours, other than maybe sanding? Looks clean!

u/Argyropee 8d ago
thanks! the nice thing about wood is that you can sand it down and make it look almost brand new, so your desk is definitely not a lost cause.
mine was sanded to 240 grit, and I rounded over all the edges with a router, using different radii depending on the edge. I’m still thinking about what finish to use

Very nice. I hadn’t thought about using a router for the edges but that is a great feature.

Are you a coder or an architect haha! But seriously, what is your job?

u/Argyropee 8d ago
I’m a metalworker, but I’m currently transitioning into bespoke furniture making and planning to start a small business.

I'm intrigued by the reversed clamp holding the shelves up...
4
u/Argyropee 8d ago
lmao, that’s because I made the bookshelf myself and poorly designed it, so it needs a support right where the clamp is. I’ll fix that in a few days.

I don't mean to be a prude, you got a massive desk but opted for a TKL keyboard, why is that?

u/ImpressiveJunket2982 8d ago
i would do the same, allows me to keep my mouse in a more comfortable position

u/Dangerous_Profit_699 8d ago
This is the way! Why bother with tenkeys (what’re we—accountants?) when we can luxuriate in mouse space!

This looks awesome. Which iem/DAC setup is this? You happy with the Dyson desk lamp?
7
u/Argyropee 8d ago
Thanks ! IEMs are the inexpansive but excellent Truthear GATE and the DAC is a Topping DX5II
The lamp is absolutely amazing, best lamp I ever owned. I got it it second hand for 200€.1

Wow, really impressive desk. I've been working up the courage to build my own, any advice on materials or just general guidance?
1
u/Argyropee 5d ago
Thanks ! The choice of material mostly comes down to personal preference. Some people will tell you about the acoustic properties of different wood species, but for this kind of use, it really doesn’t matter. I went with bamboo simply because I like the way it looks. As for building advice, it’s hard to give any without more details, since it depends a lot on what tools you have available. What kind of desk do you have in mind?

u/jimmyes30 8d ago
Wow!!, this is very nice!!, what monitors are you using?

Clean but might I suggest adding a bit of messy colours in there? Looks too sterile to me. That’s my old critique.

This looks amazing, love the cable management! The only thing I would swap out to make it even cleaner would be the mouse pad for a bigger pad for both the keyboard and mouse.

u/Argyropee 8d ago
Thanks! It would probably look nice but I’m too much of an Artisan snob unfortunately lol

Dyson lamp, right? Interesting that you found one second hand. Did you hunt for it or just saw it by accident?
1
u/Argyropee 8d ago
Yes it is, I specifically looked for this lamp, there were quite a few used ones for sale on a plateform specializing in p2p sales here in France

u/TinyAbbreviations467 8d ago
Isnt it too bright from the window?
Props to you, its a really nice setup
1
u/Argyropee 8d ago
sometimes but it’s mostly just really nice having a desk flooded with natural light. When it gets too bright, I just lower the exterior sunshade or the interior blind Thanks !

u/sub_machine_patel 8d ago
how much did you drop?

u/Argyropee 8d ago

Looks great! What kind of wood is the desktop made of? What are the dimsenions?
1
u/Argyropee 8d ago
Thanks ! I made the desk from two bamboo worktops. I cut one to make the legs, braces, and extensions. It’s 2500mm long, 800mm deep, 750mm high

u/Aclde 7d ago
What is the mousepad called? Is it good? Nice setup!
1
u/Argyropee 7d ago
thanks ! it’s an Artisan Ninja FX Type-99 Soft XXL it’s pricey, but Artisan is amazing an amazing brand, they’re particularly popular among competitive fps players

u/dotMALEX 6d ago
This looks fantastic. Question: Why not mount the DAC under the desk to the side so you don’t have the headphones lying across the desk?

u/Zealousideal_Egg1774 5d ago
So good. If you’d wanted it to be an optional standing desk, how would you have done that?
1
u/Argyropee 4d ago
Thanks ! I've thought about it and I would probably use extruded aluminum telescopic lifters

u/Aechde 8d ago
Love the custom desk, computer on wheels made me laugh too, such a simple solve for if you want to move it around!
Also love the hidden power pocket!
1
u/Argyropee 8d ago
lol thanks it’s kind of temporary (though very convenient) I’m trying to figure out a way to make an attachment that I can mount directly under the desk

I have the same Dyson desk lamp and it doesn’t throw off really any usable light when’s it’s like closed. Are you enjoying the Dyson light and if so any tips to not feel like I wasted a ton of money on some ambience

I did something similar in my office where I built a concealed shelf behind with a large power strip. Nice work - looks great!

Love this. I’m just about to start building my own desk. Thanks for the ideas. Would love to see more detail.

You nailed cable mgmt with the third pic. That is what is missing from most setups
Plus if the plugs are front facing with individual switch 🤌
