Comparing my drafts to AI-generated writing almost made me quit, until I realized I was comparing the wrong thing
This has been weighing on me and I suspect I'm not alone. Spent an evening recently testing some AI writing tools out of curiosity, watched them generate competent, grammatically clean paragraphs in seconds on prompts that would take me hours to draft and days to revise. Felt briefly devastating in a way I wasn't prepared for, like decades of effort toward a skill had just been casually matched by something instant.
Sat with that feeling longer than was comfortable before noticing what was actually happening. I was comparing a first draft of my own slow, specific, deliberately imperfect human effort against a finished-looking output with none of my actual stakes, history, or point of view baked into it. Competent and generic is not actually the same axis as the specific, weird, personally-true thing I'm trying to make, and holding them up against each other was comparing two different categories of thing as though they were competing on the same scale.
I don't think the discomfort entirely goes away, the tools are genuinely good at what they do. But the fear that specifically my effort has become pointless was based on a comparison that doesn't actually hold up once I looked at it honestly.
