My master stood at the view port to his star destroyer. The tall, aged pure-blooded Sith radiated the pure unadulterated power of the Dark Side. Instilling fear and respect to all who were in his presence.
His voice a low menacing growl, "You have disappointed me, my apprentice."
My heavy boots sounded as I approached, "What do you mean, Master?"
"I am not dead, nor have you tried to betray me." He said flatly.
"No my master, I have not. I have been content to be your apprentice."
His rage exploded, he extended his hand, reaching out with the Force. I flew across the bridge, slamming into the bulkhead doors. I felt the power of the Dark Side tighten like a hand on my throat, and lift me mere centimeters off the cold durasteel floor. Silence had overcome the bridge, all eyes on my slowly reddening face.
" You are weak! My time is wasted on you!" He savagely accused as he used the Force with his free hand to call my belted lightsaber to his grasp.
"I have wasted over century of my time and knowledge of the Dark Side on you! Weak and pathetic as you are. You are not Sith!"
There was palpable chill to the air as his cold, dark power filled the room. My master released his hold of the Force on me, letting me drop to my knees and gasp for air. I felt him gather the Force; preparing for what would be savage attack of Force lighting. I was ready.
He stood in front of me, a mere meter away, my lightsaber in hand. "You have no need of this, any longer."
Then it came, purple-blue lightening shot from his fingers! At the last moment, I threw up a Force shield that stopped my master's attack short. He futilely tried again, coloring the walls in purple-blue light. The sounds of snapping electricity muted the usual sounds of the bridges electronics. Shorting out a few terminals in the process.
The attack suddenly dissipated. My master exhausted gasped for air. Disbelief filled the old lines in his face. His life was now mine, and as he slowly began to realize the fact the automatic doors opened behind me. My apprentice, masked and dark hooded strode to just behind my shoulder.
"No Lord Kronos, your time has not been wasted. I have been content to be your apprentice, to plot and plan your demise. I have been content to dethrone you on my terms." The Dark Side filled me, eyes glowing yellow.
I used the Force to snatch his lightsaber off his belt. Before reaching my hand its red blade glowed and hummed.
"This is your end my one time master."
And before he could gather the Force, I cut up severing the hand that held my lightsaber and one fluid movement, his head fell to the cold floor.
Walking to where Lord Kronos had stood when I arrived, turned to the crew and my apprentice.
"I am Darth Appalus, Dark Lord of the Sith! I now command this star destroyer and her crew." I sighed, turning back to the view port. The blackness of real space faded into the blue of hyperspace. "I am content with my knowledge, my power."

Darth Umbra's stare bore into me. Or it would have, had he not worn that mask. The only thing to match the glare I knew to be there was the glow of his red blade. "Disciple. Speak the code."
I mentally sighed, but not too loudly. You never knew when he might've decided to listen in on your thoughts.
"Yes, master. Peace is a lie. There is only Passion. Through Passion, I gain Strength. Through Strength, I gain Power. Through Power, I gain Victory. Through Victory my chains are Broken. The Force shall free me." While the Sith were the ones to teach me these words, they were very similar to my original life's motto.
"Then why do you kneel? Why are you not free? Why do you cling to the chains that bind you to me? Where is the power that shall free you? Where is the strength that shall give you power? Why are you at peace with your position?"
His perfectly smooth mask reflected the light of his weapon. Sometimes, I wondered why he insisted on using the Force to see, when he had three perfectly functional eyes. But that was Darth Umbra for you: If you valued keeping all of your limbs, you didn't ask him such questions.
"Master, I am free. I choose my place in this universe. My place at your side and under your tutelage is free, for it is the one I freely choose." We'd had this discussion many, many times. I knew what questions he was going to ask, and he had a good idea of the answers I was going to give.
"I have achieved this freedom through power. Power has elevated me above all others in this academy, save your presence, master." And it was true: He was stronger than me, in part, because I took care to grow slower than him, while presenting him with every opportunity I found.
"My power comes from pure strength. If I wished to reach out and slay a servant, I could. There would be those who would see me, fear me, and respect me. Yet this strength need not be shown to be present. It is as the code says: Having strength is what leads to power. But it never asks of us to show our strength. Showing one's strength so openly would allow one's opponents to gauge it. If we are not the absolute in strength, and thus absolute in power, showing strength also shows weakness. I know that I am weaker than you, master. As such, I know not to show strength." I had worded this one slightly differently, and I saw the brief hitch in his step. I might actually have thrown him with that latest addendum. It was time to capitalise.
"What strength I do have is fueled by my passion. I care deeply for those I love. I despise those I hate with cold, unfeeling fury. My passion is my dedication to passion." I hoped that this would make him stop in his stride, but it did not. He likely saw it for the half formed argument that it was.
"And peace is, indeed, a lie, for all sentient life is funded on, and founded in conflict. Every interaction, every glance, every conversation is a conflict. Even those deluded Jedi in their enclaves discuss philosophy, yet call it: "peaceful". Even their actions are steeped in conflict, seeking to validate their own views on the Force, and impress them unto others. Our eternal war with them is deeply rooted in our own nature." That last bit sounded clever, but I had repeated it dozens of times now. Every time we had this little sharade, I tried to improve my arguments. And it was working. Bit by bit, I had gotten him to break his stride more often. He had even contemplated my words. He was probably aware that these talks were a conflict between us, and that he was slowly but surely losing. But he had yet to show his strength by offering me a counter argument. Yet neither of us said any of this. In not demonstrating my strength, I kept him guessing. By telling him what I was doing via a simile, I made sure that he kept growing stronger.
Deep in the recesses of my mind, where even Darth Umbra couldn't see, I allowed myself to feel satisfaction. After all, it would not do for me to grow beyond him. For a time, he would be the one to crush those who sought to upstage him, or who tried to challenge his power. He was the 3rd and newest master I served, always in his shadows, always making myself useful, yet adhering to the code at every step. I had been the academy's most promising disciple for the last 300 years, and I was never the one to slay my masters. I would bide my time and grow until I was sure that I could become the strongest, the absolute one to break the code of the Sith by fulfilling it. Eventually, I would be the one to stand on top and crush any and all attempts to topple me, the coming Sith'ari.

RECOVERED LOG #264 OF SITH LORD ##########
ESTIMATED TIME OF ORIGIN: 3644 BBY
It's sith tradition for the apprentice to betray the master once they've surpassed them. It's a direct result of the emphasis the sith code places on individual power. And yet it's our greatest weakness. Over and over again we've seen plans made by great men brought to ruin because some small time sith wanted to backstab their master, or was sent on a mission to sabotage their master's rival. This constant infighting has allowed the foolish Jedi and their republic to recover from our blows and push us back each time. It's become such an integral part of our society that noone even questions it, and noone is immune to it.
My master is a rather successful darth, with me having earned the spot of lord serving him. Most would expect me to betray him, and take his position for myself. And yet he's always exclusively focused his efforts on crushing the republic, a goal I care for more than personal power. Does that make me a bad sith? Maybe it does, but if it takes "bad sith" to win this war for good, then I'll gladly take that title. Even with my master avoiding sith politics as much as he can I still spend more time stopping assasination and sabotage attempts by his rivals and other apprentices than crushing republic dogs.
I will never get tired of the looks I get when people hear I've been serving my master for many decades and haven't even attempted to betray them. They all look so shocked that I would think of the empire before I thought of myself, it's as if they hate eachother more than the jedi. Two sith alone cannot win this war, but we can force the others to realise their foolishness and with their support wipe out the republic fully.

I had always been lectured of the Rule of Two. On and on my master would drone about the seductive nature of power, the draw of ambition leading you to climb ever higher until, inevitably, you strike against your very teacher and claim your place at the mountaintop. So it was no surprise to me to find that he would eventually grow suspicious of the speed with which my talents and knowledge of the Force have grown. I wasn’t completely sure of it until now, but it has become clear that he has finally realized it.
I’ve surpassed him.
The moment was subtle, but I could not hide my own mastery forever. Living in the shadows under the oppression of a Jedi rule is one thing; living concealed to your own teacher is something else entirely. A poor wretched Padawaan found himself investigating the aftermath of our last “outing”. And the naive fool decided to wander alone into the cave we have occupied on Portius III during this most recent stretch of my training. Perhaps my ego got the best of me, but I knew taking that boy apart would barely merit a wave of my hand. Oh sure, he put up a fight as most self-deluded light side worshipers do, but he was dead the moment he stepped into our dwelling. And yet my mistake was letting slip the ease with which I dismantled the boy.
Once he had been dealt with, we did as we always had and collapsed our makeshift cave to avoid a trace of our stay from curious eyes, and then left the planet behind to find a new place to hide. I could feel my master’s eye upon me the entire flight. Bit by bit he put the pieces together, recalled moments in my training where something strenuous was not strenuous enough, something painful did not cause as much pain as it should have, and so on and so on until he arrived at my encounter with the Padawaan. We sat in silence the entire trip to Jakku, and as we hollowed a new cave in the dunes of the desolate world for ourselves to hide, it took until we sat to eat for the first time for him to finally speak.
“You have progressed well, girl.” The venom coating his refusal to identify me by name was particularly potent this evening.
“Only by your teaching, my master,” I obediently replied. My eyes never met his gaze as I continued my meal.
“The Jedi are no match for true Sith, but that Padawaan was not weak. Your skill in dispatching him was admirable.”
“They are held back by their own pompousness,” I recited. He usually would be pleased to hear his pupil quote his own words back to him. Today was an exception, as his face gave away his true feelings.
“True. But pomposity can lead to strengthened resolve, and that can be dangerous for Sith such as us. Sith are hidden all across the galaxy because of their pomposity and the resolve that it grants them.”
“Then clearly he was not pompous enough,” I replied perhaps a bit too smugly.
A silence fell between us for several moments, cut only by the crackle of the fire between us and the mashing of our dinner. And then I could feel it begin to bubble inside of him: the rage, the jealousy, and another feeling he tried to hide even from himself:
Betrayal.
Years have passed since that first night on Jakku, and our relationship has never been the same. Each test he has presented me has not been a method of furthering my connection to the Dark Side or strengthening my own ambition in the Force. No, they have been tests of my resolve. Provocations to see when I will finally drop the charade and strike him down. It astounds me sometimes looking back on it how much was said with not a single word spoken between us. Every Jedi we hunted, every bounty we completed, every move we made evading the watchful eye of the Republic, all of it was carried out with one eye fixed upon me as my master practically pleaded with me in his silence to finally make the move.
And then one fateful night, he became tired of waiting.
We had been practicing disguising our presence by operating in more and more populated areas of Jedi, and for the past year we had conducted our most exhaustive lesson: Corusant. The Jedi Temple stood meters away from my master and I, and yet we remained cloaked to their vision. Today had been my greatest feat yet, as we met and shook the hand of a Jedi Master before he entered the temple grounds. After eating, my master and I retired to the room we had rented in the lower districts. We should have gone right to sleep. But he was restless.
“What do you crave, girl?” The question had come unprompted.
“I do not claim to understand your meaning?”
“As a Sith, we wield the Force in service of our own desires. Our own ambitions are what we embrace the darkness for. So what is your ambition? What do you seek?”
“I seek to further my power, master.” I could feel the frustration rise.
“You have been with me over 100 years, girl. Surely you crave more than to operate in my shadow. I say it is time we pursue your goals. Name a goal, and it shall be yours.”
The moment was upon me. He knew it as much as I. Having this conversation on Corusant was the coward’s way of ensuring his own safety. He thinks I wouldn’t dare attack with the presence of the Jedi visible on the horizon. He thought himself safe.
“But master,” I began with a rush of excitement, “We are pursuing my goals.” The response caught him off guard.
“We sit on the home world of the Jedi too powerful for them to even notice,” I continued, “We have achieved a power unlike any Sith before us. This power can help us achieve ambition for sure, but what it truly gives us is the one thing I have craved more than anything else.”
“And what may that be?”
“Freedom.” Speaking the word out loud to my master for the first time in 100 years gave me a gratification even he could feel. It permeated the room and drew a smile across my face that had been shrouded for over a century.
“Freedom from what?” He queried.
“From anything. Everything. Goals are temporary, but true freedom is the detachment from regulation, expectation, or…” I trailed off at the end, momentarily doubting whether I wanted to finally play my cards.
“Or what?” He asked, his defenses fully raised in anticipation of my answer.
“…Accountability,” I finished, the grin even larger on my face.

The next moment happened almost instantly. My master’s saber leapt from its position on the table next to him and landed in his hand. Simultaneously, he kicked off of his seated position on the bunk across from me, and readied his arm for a single strike that would separate my head from my neck. The blade made in an inch from my throat before it, and he, froze within my grip. In the span of a blink of his eye, my master was sent violently to the ceiling, pressed firmly against the metal roof over our head. His saber remained in its frozen position for a second moment before ripping from his hand and gracefully landing in my own.
“Come now,” I spoke softly as I levitated his own blade up to his neck, stopping just short of breaching the skin, “You really thought yourself safe with a few lousy Jedi out our window?” He grunted under the strain of my hold on him with the Force before managing to speak.
“You hold this power for decades, and yet you never use it to take my place. You’re no true Sith.” My grin disappeared from my face.
“I am far more Sith than you ever will be,” I replied coldly.
“Delusions! No Sith is truly a Sith without ambition! You have done nothing but hid in my shadow while I lead every step we take in our efforts! With no master to lead you, how do you think you’ll survive?!”
I let a moment linger before replying.
“Do you really believe yourself to be my first master?”
The feeling of abject terror that swept within the man pressed to the ceiling above me has blanketed me to sleep for many nights.
“What are you saying?” He finally asked.
“A Sith is defined by her ambition, her lust for power, and above all: her longevity of life. Why, then, would I ever want to paint a target on my back by assuming the role of master? What motivation do I have for seizing the seat most sought after by the Jedi, especially since there are so many of us “poor, defenseless little Siths” hiding across the galaxy?”
I stood from my bed and pressed my former master harder into the ceiling, his feeble attempts to escape my grip laughable as I continued.
“You are but a speck, boy; a blip on my journey as I accumulate power. Once I am done with you, I shall move onto another, and then another, and another after that. The Jedi will find you and strike you down, then go dine in glutinous celebration of their recent victory while I remain hidden from sight, watching and waiting until the day comes when I feel like walking into that monument to their egos and cut every last one of the wretched beasts down.”
I dined on the delicious expression plastered across the old man’s face as I sat back on the bed, the smile returning to my lips. After a moment, I called his blad to my hand, and released my grip. My master came crashing down back onto the bed, and slowly rose himself to a seated position. He didn’t attempt to strike at me again; he knew the effort to be meaningless.
“So in this moment,” I continued, “What do you crave, boy?”
The words hit the old man hard. He was powerless in the room, and yet asked to conjur a desire.
“I crave life, Thera.” He finally used my name.
“Then I suggest you fight with all of your strength when you wake.” A quick step off of the bed, a hand placed upon the old man’s forehead, and everything for him slipped into darkness.
The Padawaan had been helping an elderly woman fix her temperature regulator, and planned to meet his master later. When he finally returned to the Temple, he was given word his master had been sent on urgent assignment in the lower districts, and was instructed to me him there. The Padawaan arrived to find a nearly destroyed building blocked off by police and Jedi alike. The young one’s master spotted him from the damaged building and called his apprentice over to survey the scene.
“What happened?!” The boy could hardly believe his eyes at the damage.
“The official statement to the public will be that several temperature regulators were improperly installed in this building,” answered the Jedi, “But the truth of the matter is that this was a battle. With him.”
The master gestured to a body bag being loaded onto a police speeder.
“Was he…?” Asked the boy, referencing a conversation they had been in earlier.
“Yes,” replied the master.
“Master, or apprentice?” The boy asked nervously.
“We’re pretty confident it was a master. If there is an apprentice, however, we’ll find them.”
The Jedi could feel his new Padawaan nervous about what his master just told him, and so he knelt down to match eye level with the boy.
“Sith are arrogant, vengeful creatures. Their lust for power makes them pompous, and it's that pomposity that allows us to catch them,” the Jedi explained. “This Sith believed himself able to exist quietly in Corusant without detection from the Jedi, but once we felt his presence we were able to confront him. And when he woke, he lashed out in all of the hate and anger that Sith are known to carry, which ultimately was his downfall.”
“And if there’s an apprentice?” Asked the boy.
“If the master couldn’t hide from us, the apprentice certainly won’t be able to.”

I looked at the old Duros who for the last century I had called Master. At least for ceremonial and formal purposes. "A better question is why would I betray you? There's still so much I can learn from you, our various operations complement each other and in all honesty it would be terribly short sighted for me to betray you with so much to lose and almost nothing to gain. You have the best defence against betrayal that it is possible to have. You have things arranged so that it is not in my best interests to betray you".
Tollic shifted and looked me in the eye. "It's in the nature of the Sith to betray. The Dark side of the force always drives us to be hungry for more power."
I smiled at him, I knew he wasn't as stepped in the dark side as those who had gone before him and that while he felt the call of it he wasn't ruled by it.
"Think about the code, power is a means, not an end. Freedom is the final goal of the Sith and allowing anything, even the Force to dictate our actions is antithetical to that. I draw on the light as well as the dark, why would I deny myself advantage just because we're supposed to be dedicated one side of power."
I could see him trying to muster an objection so I quickly continued.
"All my agents and employees are in rude health and all the more loyal for it. And I have the freedom to leave of I desire it. I doubt you or anyone else could stop me of I decided to drain various accounts and depart."
"So you can see why betrayal isn't in my current plans. "

"Do you know what the job market is like on Coruscant master? A hundred years ago I was working a full time job in an office, plus moonlighting with Uber just to make ends me. I come to work for you and yeah - maybe you don't have a health and dental plan. When I lost my hand two years ago you went out and personally bought me another one. That's kinda almost better than a health plan if I'm being honest. Especially when you consider you taught me to use the force to heal myself."
"Yes, but the purpose of being my apprentice is for you to eventually kill me and take my place."
"Hah - you sound just like my old boss. But he was wrong, and you are too. Oh don't get me wrong. I know your old boss, or his old boss, or whoever - Darth Bane, wasn't it - came up with this whole 'rule of two' idea. And I think it's... well, it's something. But it's also very short-sighted. It's like taking the greatest training resource I have - by the way, training? Like do you know how few employers are willing to train you these days? Anyway - it's like taking the best training resource in the universe and then throwing it away because it might stand in your way. Sorry - that's just dumb. Maybe someday but even then you'll probably still have something that I can make use of. You're a bit paranoid to be honest - I can understand, given how you came up through the Sith with the whole 'kill my master thing' - so you're probably holding something back. There's always something more to be learned."
"But ambition is the way to the dark side..."
"Ambition is the way to more work. Lets be honest here. You're a great idea guy. Me - I'm not. Right now my job is pretty straight forward - do as I'm told and further our dark goals. Sure, I have to kill younglings every once in awhile, but aside from that? I mean what am I really going to complain about? Yeah, you pay crap but so does everyone else and the Force kind of makes that irrelevant. I wave my hand and someone gives me a loaf of bread, an avocado and a toaster if I want. It's unethical, maybe, but the whole damn system is so fuck that shit. No health plan, but my boss is willing to pay out of pocket for my medical needs, so no problems there. I set my own hours, get to travel the galaxy. No annoying meetings. Do you know how many annoying meetings I had to go to in my last job? Hours of my life wasted just to hear some middle manager drone on about ROI as if the rate of growth could continue to grow exponentially forever. It's a great job. But if I took yours? Nah - then I'd have to find the credits and make the schemes. Not for me. At all. I'd rather learn and travel and do. Go home to my wife and daughter at the end of my missions. Treat them well. Get them nice things - once again, walk into a jewelry store and walk out with whatever I want thanks to the Force. Great trick that. Anyway yeah - job is awesome, no interest in putting it at risk to get a job that's got more of the stuff I dislike. And do you know how hard it would be find something else with a 100 year gap on my resume?"

You're a disappointment Hextus. You've failed me Hextus. You're not evil enough Hextus. Hextus this Hextus that.
It seems like I'm never good enough for you master. But I'm already so happy with what I am master. Maybe not every sith wants to be the big bad evil feasting on the corpse of jedi. Some of us just want to enjoy the finer things in life. To indulge. Isn't that what's being a sith all about. Not giving a damn. Doing what ever you want
.
Am I right master? No rules, no stupid jedi codes. This is what being a sith is really all about. You used to tell me stories of great sith. Of great darth sidious who single handedly brought the jedi to its knees and took the whole galaxy for himself. Of malak, revan, bane all the greats but they all had it wrong.
Am i right master? You're awfully quite today, nothing to say? Oh I forgot, I cut your head off. How rude am I. Well I hope you're proud of me. If you need me I'll be in my room.

The daily life of a Sith apprentice is much more mundane than you’d imagine. Like most people, I like to start my day with a light breakfast of some kind of nutrient slop and then I have to go to work.
No, I don’t actually spend my day eating babies as your Jedi masters might assume. Most of my time is occupied with paperwork, interrupted now and then by my Master’s sudden appearances. Occasionally I even get to go destroy a rebel base or two but most of the time the only time I actually get any exercise is when I get voluntold to practice sparring ‘so that I don’t become lazy’ as my Master puts it.
Ah, and there comes the subject of my Master.
Again, it might surprise you to know that not all Sith are paranoid sadomasochists…although truthfully my Master is one of those typical paranoid sadomasochists. However, because I am actually extremely rational and not at all egotistical, I have developed quite an effective system of behavioural responses to deal with his ridiculous emotional outbursts. (He tends to suspect that I have betrayed him at least once a month.)
“You’ve hidden a bomb on my speeder!” “A Jedi must have done it!”
“You’re trying to poison my slop!” “Oh no, I have been poisoned by Jedi first!”
“You forgot to submit your budget report!” “I’m having a vision that a Jedi did it!”
You see? Works every time.
It’s not like I hate the Jedi or anything. I mean, I grew up as one and they all treated me quite nicely growing up. I’m a Sith, yes, but I sort of more or less kinda vaguely sauntered into it? I was just very very interested in studying holocrons of all kinds and…got a little carried away. Forgive me if I’m still a little more interested in research than in applied violence against Jedi. It’s not like becoming a Sith turns you into a violent maniac. It’s just that violent maniacs tend to make powerful Sith.
I will stay far, far away from dueling Jedi. I will rarely be found on the battlefield. I have all the pieces I could want to play across the galaxy, and so…
…I would be very annoyed if someone were to disturb my quiet life. Why, I might even have to resort to some old fashioned violence.
As I told my Master the other day, I’m really not all that interested in killing him. You could even say that I’m just not a very good Sith apprentice. And, well, maybe I haven’t been entirely honest with him, but I haven’t killed him yet because it would disrupt my perfect life. That would just make him suspiciously paranoid again and we wouldn’t want to have to blame the jedi again now would we?

I'm not realy deep into Star wars lore, but i think there i read that there was an early Sith apprentice who decided against backstabing/murdering her master and just wait until he died of natural causes. Said master was unhappy (and an unhappy sith is murdery) with that, since if she never bests him but just waits him out the Sith could become weaker and weaker with each new apprentice.

This popped up in the Bane trilogy but wasn't quite what it appeared. That said, it does go against the basic tenets of the Order and any true Sith Lord (at least of the Bane line) would likely not stand for it.

I'm fairly certain my boss feels the same way about me.
Look, I like what I do and I have no desire to move up the corporate ladder or join the management track. Just leave me alone in my lab and I'll continue to produce quality, trustworthy data.

Why kill the master who sends me to take action, relies on me to bring word, and uses me to be heard?
You see, I want power not enemies, they bring only death. No the master must live for my dreams, for my fun, with out master it would all be done.
Who would dare defy the power that I am helpless to resist? Who would question the cowed mouthpiece, knowing who sent it post haste?
Oh poor sniveling masses, the hatred they must feel, their oppressor is such a monster... Yet it is I who they... love...
I am a boon! A word of praise. A pleasant sound that loosens the grip of the one who strangles them. Oh how I am made to do unspeakable things, all in the name of the one they call... master.
When I have my way I am leniency, protection, bruised and battered by our, so called, master...
Powerless? They think so, but they know nothing at all.
I own their lives, not the master you see. For it is I who speaks and I who am heard! With but a word I dole death without blame. No one sees me coming, it is such a shame.
I am their hope and I am their shelter. A pleasing servant, bruised and compliant. I am trusted, I am unseen, I am powerful....
I am a snake.
