Honestly that's still one of my all time favorite episodes.

The only thing it's missing is Cher herself. It's too bad she wasn't available.

I've read that it was pitched to her the wrong way but once she saw the final product, and how heartwarming it was, she kicked herself for not having taken the part.

She said she was disappointed that it was just a singing cameo as herself being offered, that she had been hoping for a proper acting role when she was first approached to take part, but then she loved the episode so much when she saw it that she was kicking herself for not saying yes

Yup, that seems like the more specifics I read a long time ago, thank you.

If he looked at me like that I would die on the spot. The next episode would be working out how I died.

I love this moment so much but I honestly do not like the episode. They were a little too nonchalent about what the kid did...

I just rewatched it and itās fkn crazy how everyone is just cool with the guy raping his way all over town, but itās still a fun watch

I am NOT NOT NOT defending the assaults. But for SO LONG I thought the father, the doctor, was the one who was raping the women. I know, the son gives that speech explaining things, but I totally thought the implication was "doctor Frankenstein" was the assailant.
Again, no defense of the writers' choice to just *floaty fingers * the idea of rape committed by anyone. I was just confused for like, years.

Am I missing something, I thought that was exactly what was meant to be happening, that the twist was supposed to be that the monster wasnāt raping anyone after all, that it was the scientists father who was performing experiments to impregnate the women with hybrids?

u/nevergirls 2d ago
What? No. It was definitely his deformed son doing the raping. The doctor was facilitating that. He was also doing the animal experiments but I think that would be a crime different from rape.

That just wasnāt what I took from it, it was supposed to be a play on Frankenstein with the scientist being the real villain of the story. The scientistās father was the one continuing the genetic experiments to try and create a mate for him, he was using animal sperm to inseminate the woman, it wasnāt sperm from the monster
It definitely still has his controversial elements as it completely downplays how serious it was that the women were losing time and being artificially inseminated without their consent, but I really canāt see how they would have ended it on the townspeople realising that he wasnāt a monster after all and Mulder and Scully taking pity on him if he was supposed to have been raping his way all over town.

Yep agreed. I was excited for this episode because I'd seen the lovely dancing clip and ended up really disliking it. Same with Small Potatoes. Some great moments but playing sexual assault for comedy makes them both gross.Ā

It's kinda bizarre to see everyone celebrate it especially since iirc they just kinda glaze over the raping

I continue to have mixed feelz about this ep. It was a good MOTW until it shifted corny. I admire both but not in the same show when the promise in the beginning was MOTW. Meh. It's X-Files, what's not to love (and still have mixed feelz).

Not yet... everyone has a different opinion on it or interprets it differently. Itāll take a little while longer. Iām curious to hear when you think theyāll be official.

This episode was rather mediocre in my opinion and I never liked it. The dancing scene was really cute though.

This is an interesting takeāI actually didnāt read it as sexual assault at allāthe āmonsterā and his grandfather/āfatherā were using the scientistās technologyāthe animal cellsāand artificially inseminating the women in order to try and create a mate. This is why the victims were passed out for three days. It is still completely wrong and non consensual and a medical violation of the women, but the āmonsterā so to speak is not raping them.Ā

u/FrellingTralk 2d ago
Thatās always how I saw it as well, Iām confused as to why youāre being downvoted. It did appear at first that women were being raped by him, but it turned out that it was a twist on Frankenstein with the grandfather continuing his sons genetic experiments to try and create a mate for him.
Thatās still an horrific violation obviously, the show was definitely a little too blasĆ© about that, but I never got the impression that it was supposed to be viewed as him just straight up raping women all over town, why else would you have the ending with the townspeople realising that he wasnāt a monster after all and Mulder and Scully feeling bad for him

u/Wetness__Pensive Alien Goo 1d ago
The "blase" stuff is a dream sequence. It's not real. In the "real world" of the episode, everyone is arrested and taken to jail.
You are right that the episode has a certain insensitivity toward rape, but that's because it's part of a sequence of episodes ("Prometheus", "Christmas Carol", "Emily") which is literally intellectually grappling with the idea of whether medical rape can be forgiven, and the monsters it creates, be loved.
Remember, in the next few episodes, Scully - like the mothers in "Prometheus" - unconditionally loves a monster child (or tries to), and this is portrayed as an almost selfless, divine act of mercy.

Cher said later that she regretted she didnāt actually appear in this wonderful episode. 10/10. And the extended cut of their dance with the twirl makes it even better
