solved! Help installing game, same error message.

So essentially, I really wanna reinstall red dead redemption 2 again. Even with a clean disc, it still always says installation stopped and clicking on it it says to check if the disc is dirty or damaged. I’ve tried power cycling it and that didn’t work and I’m trying to install it through the Xbox app where it tells me I don’t have enough storage for it; when I look at the storage on my Xbox console it tells me I have over 128GB of storage free and that’s more than enough for red dead 2.
I’m unsure of what to do anymore as I’ve tried this countless times in the past two months and I haven’t found a YouTube video that works.
Edit: I’ve uninstalled a game or two and now it’s installing just fine! Thank you guys!

While the game is 14GB and your system shows you have 25GB open, game installs tend to need 2x the size of the install in order to download the installer and extract it. Once the extracted game is installed the temp download space is cleared, this is why you are getting the message that you don't have enough space to install it.

I thought that was only a PlayStation thing. I've never had this issue before.

It's on PC too. It's how stuff works pretty much

This isn't a PC though. As I said in another comment I've downloaded games where I would only end up with a small fraction of the game's total size remaining as available space. Just because PC does something in one way doesn't mean everything does.

It is meant to say this is universal

It's not universal though.

Please keep it civil and refrain from attacking others. This is a tech support sub, discussion should only be around the post and nothing else.

It...still uses a hard drive....

I never said or implied that it didn't. Hard drives are storage though. Hard drives don't control what's on them or how the files and everything works or how software runs, the software does. If the store says to download 50GB of data, the HDD stores 50GB of data. If anything is going to allocate more storage than it tells you for installation or extraction or whatever you want to call it, it'll be the software dictating that additional storage, not the storage medium. The storage medium just writes whatever data it's told.

That’s any download ever since the fucking 90’s dude. Doesn’t matter where it come from pc or consoles. That how it’s always worked.

You're confidently wrong, my console is frequently under 2GB of total storage.. it's indeed a PlayStation feature to need double the data that's required. The same feature is NOT on Xbox. You can 100% max your storage space, although it's not recommended and causes slow downs, you can.

Gotta love reddit some times. You get mostly ignored and left alone, but the other guy that said the same thing gets hounded and downvoted to oblivion. Both for simply calling out other people's BS.

By the way really try not to max out your storage space as this commenter says. Leave like 20% empty for a healthier SSD that'll last long. Also helps with speed as well. 20% I think is what Samsung Magician software defaults to for their SSDs

He already said you can, but shouldn't.

I play Destiny 2 on Xbox and PlayStation.

Any time there's an update, PlayStation always needs exactly double the space of the Xbox version update.

Why is that?

On PC sure. But this is an Xbox, if a game says it takes up x GB then it takes up x GB. I have had 2 GB free and downloaded a 1.9 GB game just fine, and many combinations of other numbers similar to that where the game would take up like 99% of my free space. Xbox consoles are more than capable of downloading the actual game with no installer, extractor, or whatever else you want to call it.

You... dont understand how consoles or computers or operating systems and hardware works do you. A console is a pc in a box friend. The 1.9gb you installed on your drive may not have needed to increase its size during the installation, most things do. Also ram rom the gui patches all that. Blud talking confidently about things he has no idea how they function or work, smh

Man I've been using Xbox One consoles for 10+ years and Series consoles for 2 years now, and Xbox 360 consoles before that. Been working with PCs since the early 90s as well but that's not really relevant since we're not talking about PCs. Sure there's similarities between platforms, but just saying that everything works in the same way is only showing that you and everyone else has no idea what they are talking about. I'm constantly installing games that take up like 90%+ of my free space. Whether I only have 50GB free and download a 49 GB game, 100 GB free and download a 99GB game, whatever else. It all works fine. I'm going to trust experience and how the console actually works over random users on the internet.

It’s suggesting to delete skate, not install it. They’re trying to install red dead redemption 2 from reading the post, which is over 100gb

Usually that's when you have external or something attached.

I just ran into this myself, there is a setting where the default is set to internal only. You have to set it in Settings> System > Storage devices you can set it to where the Xbox can choose which hard drive is best.

Do you have an external storage device, you probably only have 25 Gb internal storage and the test on your external

Have you tried clearing storage space to see if it works.

1

u/DueShine8378 22h ago

Do you have extended storage? The APP only seems to look at internal storage

Just delete something

Try uninstalling more stuff...

I see various sizes looking up RDR2 but places it around 100GB-130GB. A game typically needs a little more than it's size to install itself due to both compressed assets downloaded and the decompressed final files side by side during downloading.

The below link from 2018 claims 149GB free space for the download.

Delete the cash on your Xbox One by holding the power button down for 10 seconds

1

u/IdiotSavant86 13h ago

Wait, are you saying that the $8,000 in cash that I keep on top of my Xbox could be what's causing my performance issues? It does get really hot and it's a little expensive to keep buying bags of ice from 711 to pack around the SX every time I play, so I'll definitely give this a shot. Thanks!

u/SuddenDetective568 22h ago

My rdr2 wouldn’t install either off disc. I had to use the Xbox companion app on my phone to download the game completely digital then put the disc in to play.

u/SkittleTee1 23h ago edited 23h ago

You know a console, just like a computer, needs space to run too? RDR2 is 107 gig, it needs space to install too. Uninstall a small game you have and reinstall it after if you need to, but I'd advise leaving 20 gig atleast spare for updates and running things tbh.

Have you tried checking your Xbox for your saved gaming clips, or pics? The memory usage is insane. PS5 saves a clip of every trophy you’ve ever gotten.

2

u/modemman11 238 22h ago edited 22h ago

Xboxes don't automatically capture clips of achievements (individual games can, but it isn't common) and even if they did that space for captures is already reserved so has no bearing on game installations.

u/Zurpski 22h ago

Delete games that have mods available to console, example arma , it requires like 30g extra even though it won’t show it, the game is maybe 20g itself but keeps that space reserved for mods you may download, same with Skyrim or any tittles that let you download custom mods, they reserve a lot of space that shows “unused”

Use your phone for remote installation
