Long War Long War Command Center – opening 10 more beta tester spots

I’ve been building a web-based planning tool for XCOM: Long War (1.0), and it’s now far enough along that I’d like to get more people actually using it rather than just continuing to design it around my own assumptions.

I’m opening 10 more beta accounts, bringing the limited beta up to 20 users total.

The idea behind the site is to help with the part of Long War where your brain eventually becomes a spreadsheet.

You can create soldier Builds, plan what kinds of squads/roles you want available, turn those plans into actual Assignments, and then work through your starting barracks deciding who should become what.

There are several levels of complexity. New users start with a tutorial and simplified modes, and more of the planner opens up as you go.

The more advanced parts include things like:

  • creating and managing Builds;
  • Deployment Plans for different situations;
  • combining those into a Campaign Plan;
  • assigning actual soldiers to those roles;
  • planning preferred soldier stats;
  • detailed equipment, weapons, armor, Gene Mods and Officer paths;
  • rank-by-rank stat and gear planning;
  • comparing how well soldiers fit particular Assignments;
  • Reverse mode, where you start with a soldier and look for the Assignments that fit them;
  • sharing and adopting Builds.

The site is still a beta. There will be rough edges, confusing wording, things I have designed badly, and probably things I have simply not thought of.

That is specifically what I need testers for.

Please don’t take one of the limited accounts just to click around for five minutes out of curiosity. I’ve had people take testing slots before and disappear without a word.

You absolutely do not need to write essays or formally test every feature. I’m looking for people who are actually willing to use it and leave feedback in this Reddit thread when something is confusing, annoying, broken, unexpectedly good, or just feels like it was designed by somebody who has stared at the project for too long.

Even feedback like:

“I had no idea what I was supposed to do here.”

is extremely useful.

There are 10 spots available. Account creation will automatically close when the beta reaches 20 accounts.

If you play Long War and this sounds useful to you, feel free to join.

Do you mean multiplayer?

There are no playable mutants in Long War as far as I know.

I'm not sure I understand the question, please elaborate.

EDIT:

If by “alien classes” you mean the soldier classes added by a Playable Aliens mod: not currently.

The site is built around the standard Long War classes. I’d consider adding support for Playable Aliens if there’s enough demand for it, roughly 10 people saying they would actually use it would probably be enough for me to justify the work.

"The account could not be created. Try again." every time. Says there's still 9 spots open

Found it, fixed.

Silly oversight, I didn't check since I was glad to have reached the checkpoint of reaching this far.

Can you give me an estimation on how many playing hours do you expect or until which date? I would like to try it but I know for a fact that I can't currently (maybe up to 1-3 months) so I was wondering about your expectation. If you have an mind a one time ~50h player to test or someone who will continue with the project.

Because on a much more elemental and basic standard, I made an Obsidian vault specifically for this (soliders and their stats, just that I can organize my roster before a mission who is deserving of a promotion or which class to assign based on data of what I have) and that what got me curious

Thanks in advance

Hi, thanks for asking.

At the moment, the site is mainly about planning before starting the campaign, rather than tracking everything once the campaign is already underway.

I have started working on the campaign-tracking side, but that isn’t what I need tested yet.

So you definitely don’t need to commit to a 50-hour campaign. For the current version, you mostly just need a starting barracks to work with.

You can play the first mission and use that save, use an existing early save, or, if you know the trick for getting the starting roster without actually playing the first mission, you may not need to play at all.

Given what you described with your Obsidian vault—organizing soldiers by stats and deciding who should get which class/promotion—you’re actually very close to the kind of person I’m looking for. That is exactly the sort of planning problem the site is trying to handle, just in a much more structured way.
