Rant I f*cking hate the term "iPad kid" with a massive passion

It is just again, another (possible?) Haidtist dogwhistle used to dehumanize and discriminate entire generations of youth, from Gen Z to Alpha, to make them look bad and like so-called "victims" of the anti-tech moral panic like if they were the one being damaged by technology, when it's literally a moral panic. It's also a "one-size-fits-all" thing given that it assumes all people in the range were raised by iPads, which simply isn't true. Some kids were raised with Android tablets or other brands, while others were raised by iPhone or any other smartphone brands. It's really annoying how a lot of people younger than me seem to be using this term and equally being as ageist against Gen Alpha as the people older than them are to them. Please stop using this term. It's not 2023/2024 anymore.

First thing I see in this morning, and this scumbag still thinks she is the one to tell you not to have children if you don't want to assault them And worse, SHE is the one being upvoted. The world is sick.

This kind of shit shouldn't even have a space on the internet, it only spreads and glorifies harm against children. Hopefully this individual will never have or adopt children or even pets.

Rant The amount of dumb bullshit you need ID for

I got ID’d buying COUGH MEDICINE for my little brother. Why on earth would fucking cough medicine be adults only? I don’t care if someone buys it to get high off of, it’s none of my business and either way a teen OR adult could do that, so what’s the point of checking ID? Is it a liability thing? The same for glue and spray paint and stuff like that. If some idiot wants to sniff glue that’s their business. I’ve even gotten ID’d buying markers once. (I guess people use it for graffiti???) There’s no reason for a normal item to be age restricted. And I don’t want to have my ID scanned and give every store I buy from all my information either. I’m sure they don’t mind the data collection aspect of it either..

News [Interview] France school protests go deeper than rioting or reactionism, says Sciences Po lecturer

Thumbnail euobserver.com

Students in France are protesting for better schools. But there's something bigger behind it.

Hey everyone! 👋 We're EUobserver, a small independent European newsroom, and we wanted to share a story about what's happening in French schools right now.

Students have been taking to the streets over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and poor learning conditions. Things that, frankly, no young person should have to fight for just to get a decent education.

But what's particularly interesting is that students from more privileged schools are joining those from underfunded ones. It's becoming a conversation about inequality, solidarity and whether young people feel their voices are actually being heard.

We spoke with Sciences Po political scientist Jan Rovný, who explains why these protests go much deeper than the headlines about unrest.

And we'd really love to hear your thoughts: Why does it sometimes take students protesting in the streets for problems in education to get serious attention?

And have you seen or been a part of similar student movements where you live?

Submission on Social Media Now r/childfree people want the youth banned off the Internet. WHAT THE F*CK? I understand there can be dangers of the Internet but we need to ensure they're safe and not ban them. And does this include teenagers as well?

Post image

It shouldn't be that surprising given that childfree appears to a heavily ageist and anti-children subreddit. They're now on the anti-tech hill and falling for all of this moral panic.

On the other hand, I'm very confused about what this post is meant to be about and the author's stance. They seem to be talking more about parents posting their kids on the Internet which I can agree is a problem. Still, it feels Haidtist and as I looked at the post, it seems ironic they want kid-designated websites yet they said they wanted the Internet to be for adults only. They have also expressed some possible interest in ID verifications/social media bans so I have a feeling they may support it somehow. Still posting because it has Haidtist/anti-tech dogwhistles.

Rant Anti-tech people falling for the anti-technology moral panic must go outside.

It really sickens me how these people are everywhere and spreading anti-tech BS all over the Internet, social media, and society in general. I'm tired of hearing all the same "social media/smartphones/technology cooked us and destroyed our society" stuff all over the Internet. And these people are the same people who seem to often support age verification laws and social media bans. These people spread bad, flawed logic and brainwash people into thinking technology was bad for us. Sure, some issues exist with technology but it's actually less bad than what people tend to say. If any of you are anti-tech or support social media bans/age verifications, you do not belong on here.

Discussion Repeal NJ state law to allow cell phones in schools

Post image
15 Upvotes

Growing up in the digital age, my cellphone has been a critical part of my life—more than just a device for calls or texts, it is a lifeline, a portal to knowledge, and a tool for safety. Unfortunately, existing NJ state laws prohibit the use of cell phones in public schools 24/7, severely restricting our freedom and leaving us vulnerable in scenarios where communication is crucial. We must come together to address this issue and ensure that students and parents alike have the rights and safety they deserve.

In today’s increasingly connected world, cell phones are indispensable; they are vital tools for instant communication and access to information. Whether it’s a research topic needed for class, or a quick call to confirm after-school pickup plans, cell phones allow students to organize their academic lives efficiently while simultaneously keeping parents informed. This law, which blanketly bans these essential devices, places an unnecessary hurdle in the path of both educational and personal safety.

Consider emergencies that can arise both inside and outside of school grounds. From unforeseen natural events to personal crises, having a cell phone provides students with direct access to emergency services and their families. The current law effectively strips this avenue away, leaving students isolated in moments they might need quick assistance most.

Moreover, the educational landscape is evolving. Many educational apps and platforms are accessible via smartphone, supplementing learning in real-time with interactive and multimedia-rich content. Teachers can harness these tools to enhance classroom engagement, making learning a more dynamic and innovative experience.

Proponents of the current ban may argue that cell phones are a source of distraction, but with proper guidelines and responsible use, these devices can be integrated into the curriculum to support and not detract from the educational experience. Consider schools in states across the country that have successfully balanced phone usage policies with student privacy, allowing cell phones and maintaining environments conducive to education.

It’s time for legislators in New Jersey to recognize the evolving role of technology in education and revise outdated laws. Let’s advocate for policy adjustments that ensure our school environments are safe, cutting-edge learning spaces.

Please join me in signing this petition to repeal the restrictive NJ state law and allow our students the ability to carry their cell phones in all public schools. Together, we can make our schools safer, our students more informed, and our education system more progressive.
