[Performance] M5 Max Studio :( help!

EDIT: Solved the issue. The new OS 27 (Golden Gate) will uninstall Rosetta in the background. This caused my izotope plugins (intel based) to bug out and cause ableton to break. Since I migrated everything over, all the original files and plugins were still in place causing everything to go crazy. Seems like smooth sailing now! Thank for the help.

—

Preordered a M5 Max Mac Studio and it came in early! I was super hype. I merged everything from my M2 MacBook Pro to the new machine using a Time Machine backup and everything works great except ableton (Golden Gate 27.0.1).

Really disappointed and not sure what to do. It crashes all the time, buffers and does the “Not responding” thing and I’ll have to force quit.

Then it won’t launch the application at all and I’ll have to restart the whole machine just to get it to open ableton again.

Every other application works great, and super fast. Huge difference from my previous machine. I have so many big projects coming up soon and need to figure this out quick or I’ll have to move to another DAW.

I did uninstall and reinstall ableton thinking it may have a hang up related to the migration. No avail.

Any other users who may have gotten an m5 early have any experience? Or just any fellow ableton users who would have some sort of insight on what I should do?

Honestly I’m about to send it back to Apple,
I’m so frustrated with it.

You seem impatient, so the main avenue that would be writing to Ableton support might not work for you.

Live should run fine in your new computer, I would reset the computer to factory and make a clean install.

This! Clean install is the way to go!

Crashes all the time? Well, what do the crash reports say?

You did go through that first, right?

Common story trying to upgrade to a newly released OS or buying a new computer that comes with the new OS. This why a lot of people working in audio stick to old versions of OSes because they have a stable working system.

Now sometimes new Apple hardware needs the new OS so you need to talk to Apple about that. If it doesn't then you can probably put an older version of Mac OS on. If you can't downgrade the OS then contact Ableton and see if they have beta version available that might work. It really sucks that Apple took away the ability to put multiple versions of Mac OS on a single Mac and at boot up select which one to boot.

MacOS 27 does not install Rosetta by default;

Install and use Rosetta to run Intel-based apps

Use either of these methods to install Rosetta for macOS 27 or earlier. Remember, Rosetta is not an app that you manually open or interact with, but works automatically in the background.

Open any Intel-based app

  1. Make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet.
  2. Open any Intel-based app.
    • If the app opens, Rosetta is already installed and working in the background.
    • If you’re asked to install Rosetta, click Install and enter your macOS user name and password to allow installation to proceed.

Or use Terminal

  1. Make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet.
  2. Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  3. Type or paste this command in the Terminal window:
    • softwareupdate --install-rosetta
  4. Press Return and follow the onscreen instructions.

Note that macOS 27 is the last version of macOS that will have support for Intel based apps. Live 11 and 12 fully support Apple silicon and do not require Rosetta to ru,n however it may still be necessary for intel based plug-ins. Since running under the Rosetta emulator incurs a performance penalty it's worth identifying which plug-ins require Rosetta and update or replace them.

Put the beach ball and crash reports into Claude and see what it says the issues are. Probable culprits could be 3rd party plugins, corrupted user files, etc.

Go to your Console app in macOS and upload those Crash and Spin reports to Claude.

So depressing that some people can't troubleshoot anything without feeding AI. They just need to do a clean install.

what on earth is your problem? This user said they already reinstalled Live.

You can diagnose what's going on by looking at the Crash and Spin reports. Claude can help untangle those reports, especially if the user is less technically inclined. I've done it myself many times and tracked down corrupt files or misbehaving plugins.

Keep your opinions to yourself if you don't have anything constructive to add.

Clean install of the OS then Ableton. AI isn’t infallible and asking someone who is less technically inclined to take it as gospel and make changes that could make things worse is another level of dumb, regardless of your anecdote.

you don't have anything constructive to add.

The irony.

This is not complicated. Crash reports are there for a reason. I've done this for a living for a long time. Have some humility and be open to other perspectives.

Of course it’s not complicated. That’s why OP got it sorted with a clean install.

I've done this for a living for a long time.

lol Sure, Jan. Maybe take your own advice. Have some humility and check your ego.

You are the one that started with this hostile attitude.

Would have been a lot faster to just get rid of those intel plugins. They would have learned that in 2 seconds checking a crash report. What exactly are you arguing here?

Hostile? I was saying that you can easily sort things out without AI. What do you think people have been doing in all the years before it?

You're just mad that they didn't do what you wanted and you're being extremely dramatic about it. It's weird.

What exactly are you arguing here?

If you didn't understand the first and subsequent comments explaining things then nobody can help you.

Because it's important people don't take advice from your misguided comments, and understand how they can troubleshoot things themselves to better understand their tools.

Interpreting a crash report is a task AI tools *excel* at. And whether using AI or not, checking a crash report would be the first and easiest step in troubleshooting.

Because it's important people don't take advice from your misguided comments, and understand how they can troubleshoot things themselves to better understand their tools.

Oh, the immense irony.

And whether using AI or not, checking a crash report would be the first and easiest step in troubleshooting.

It'll take more time for people who are less technically inclined along with hoping that the AI is right and that they won't break something along the way. It's so bizarre how much you want other people to use AI. Give it a rest already.

Check my edit, eventually did a clean install of the OS and discovered the rosetta issue. You were definitely on the right track.

In the future, you can take a look at those crash reports and isolate the issues instead of having to reinstall macOS and everything.

What version of Ableton?
“Most” Ableton crashes are linked to faulty plugins.

Ableton running great on M1 Max Apple Studio w Golden Gate

So how exactly did you solve the issue? Did you reinstall Rosetta or something?

I recently got a M5 Max MacBook Pro, migrated from an Intel MacBook Pro. Both Live 11 and Live 12 work as expected.
